Evangelical leader Tony Perkins knocks Rand Paul's 'gay' remark

By Becky Perlow, CNN

Washington (CNN) - You may disagree with it, but you shouldn’t make fun of it.

That’s what conservative Family Research Council president Tony Perkins told CBS’s "Face the Nation" on Sunday about U.S. Sen. Rand Paul’s arguably derogatory use of the term “gay.”

“The president, you know, recently weighed in on marriage,” Paul, a Kentucky Republican, remarked to the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition, a conservative group, on Friday. “And, you know, he said that his views were evolving on marriage. And call me cynical, but I wasn’t sure that his views on marriage could get any gayer.”

The audience burst into a laughter that echoed all the way to the Sunday talk show tables, where opposing sides weighed in, from gay rights activist and singer Clay Aiken to Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus.

But Perkins’criticism of Paul’s comments was noteworthy because Perkins is one of the nation’s best-known opponents of same-sex marriage and of gay rights more broadly.

Condemning Paul’s remarks on Sunday, Perkins said the debate over homosexuality and same-sex marriage is not “a laughing matter.”

“I don’t think this is something we should joke about,” Perkins said on "Face the Nation." “We are talking about individuals who feel very strongly one way or the other, and I think we should be civil, respectful, allowing all sides to have the debate.”

While Perkins’ comments caught many by surprise, Aaron McQuade, director of news and field media for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, said he doesn’t believe Perkins was defending the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

“I think he was saying that he takes this issue so seriously that it’s not okay to make light of it, even if you also oppose it the way he does,” McQuade said in a phone interview.

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

“This is not a man who represents the 40-whatever percent of the country that does not support marriage equality,” McQuade said. “This is a man who represents a tiny, tiny, fraction of Americans who believes, as he does, that gay people have an emptiness within them. That they are abnormal.”

The Family Research Council did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday.

McQuade also said it was hard to tell what Paul meant by using the word “gayer.” “If that same comment was made by someone with a more pro-LGBT history, it likely would not be taken negatively,” he said.

On CNN’s "State of the Union" on Sunday, Perkins told chief political correspondent Candy Crowley that opposition to same-sex marriage shouldn’t be the “central point” of presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney’s campaign. But Perkins also admitted frustration with Capitol Hill Republicans who are portraying the issue as a political distraction.

“Defending the family, the cornerstone of civilization, is not a distraction,” he said, while stressing that the economy and jobs are also key issues in this election. “It should be a priority, and it should be a part of what Mitt Romney talks about.”

Feeling of disgust toward gays is normal, natural, innate, and instinctive. It's a normal evolutionary reaction. That's why it's the same regardless of nation, religion, athiesm, race, culture or location. It's a universal human feeling, and it won't change.

"Feeling of disgust toward gays is normal, natural, innate, and instinctive."

That is a complete lie only a prejudice bigot makes up this type of ridiculous excuse for their own poor mind set. There are hundreds of thousands of experts that have proven that being gay isn't a choice, it's not a mental illness and it can't be voluntarily change. Which is why now so many are fighting for this groups civil rights. Now continuing to choose to spread and fuel the hatred towards this minority group is a choice and a bigoted one at that.

God't greatest gift to humanity is the ability to choose.

When it comes how to live, and what you like, everything is a choice.

Some choices are right and some are wrong.

Perkins lies through his teeth when he says that he wants to "defend the family." His organization's very purpose for existence is not to defend families, but to attack those families that don't meet their criteria of what a family should be. If you have a gay son or daughter, they want you to either disown them or send them off to be brainwashed (usually against their will) at one of their aversion therapy (read: psychological torture) centers.

Marriage is not a religiou right, it is a civil right. It is only recognized based on a legal agreement, not based on a religious ceremony. Therefore, every citizen should have the right to marry another consenting citizen, irrespective of what one religion has to say on the matter. This is a matter of State, not of Church.

    May 14, 2012 at 5:13 pm |
    • UtahProf

I don't want to start an argument with you but, you are wrong – marriage was originally a contract between two families and had nothing to do with either religion OR state. Religions and governments took control over it for obvious reasons – control and money.

UtahProf, a religious ceremony does not a legal marriage make, no matter the history of marriage. It's a civil issue. The religious crap is only icing on the cake for people who still ignorantly cling to myths.

There have been many, many gay people who have made positive contributions to all areas of society over past millenia – including the church.

Our country is falling on its face. We are not the leader of the free world any longer. The rest of the world is watching while a group of idiots in the House caused us to lose our credit rating score so they could make a point on a stupid budget. Now we are trying to deny fellow citizens the right to marry whomever they please. Benjamin Franklin said something like: "we've given you a republic, if you can keep it." I guess we can't. Smells so good! Coprophilia (from Greek ??p???, kópros—ex rement and f???a, filía—liking, fondness), also called scatophilia or scat (Greek: s?at?, skatá-s hi t),[1] is the paraphilia involving exual pleasure from fe ces.[2][3] In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-IV-TR), it is classified under 302.9 Paraphilia Not Otherwise Specified and has no diagnostic criteria other than a general statement about paraphilias that says "the diagnosis is made if the behavior, exual urges, or fantasies cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning". Furthermore, the DSM-IV-TR notes, "Fantasies, behaviors, or objects are paraphilic only when they lead to clinically significant distress or impairment (e.g. are obligatory, result in exual dysfunction, require participation of nonconsenting individuals, lead to legal complications, interfere with social relationships)".

How many more gay people does God have to create before closed-minded so-called 'religious' bigots will accept them? I'm not for 'forcing' any particular religion to accept gay marriage, but in a country where life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are considered inalienable rights, the 'state' should not be discriminatory.
