Source: Obama campaign hires faith outreach director

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

Washington (CNN) - Just as it confronts fallout with some religious communities over President Barack Obama’s newly expressed support for same-sex marriage, the Obama re-election campaign is hiring a religious outreach director, an activist close to the campaign said Monday.

Michael Wear, who currently serves as executive assistant to the executive director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, will join the Obama campaign in Chicago as Faith Vote Director, according to James Salt, a Catholic activist who is close to the Obama campaign and White House.

A White House source confirmed Wear’s departure on Monday but could not say whether he is joining the Obama campaign. The campaign did not respond to a request for comment on Monday. Wear’s hiring was first reported Monday by the Religion News Service.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

"Michael has served the president extremely well and he will be a great asset to the campaign," said Salt, the organizing director for Catholics United, a progressive group.

Sources close the White House say the timing was not dictated by the controversy over Obama’s support for same-sex marriage. After Obama announced his support for legalized same-sex marriage, he hosted a conference call with 13 pastors on Wednesday to talk about his views.

Wear, who was raised a Catholic but now attends a nondenominational, evangelical-style church in Washington, has spearheaded White House outreach to evangelicals and has focused on policy issues like adoption throughout Obama’s first term

Joshua DuBois, the executive director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, directed religious outreach for the Obama campaign in 2008. Before that, it was unusual for Democratic presidential campaigns to hire faith outreach staffers.

In the aftermath of the 2004 election, when George W. Bush won re-election with the help of many so-called values voters and when religion-related issues like same-sex marriage figured into race, Democrats began stepping up outreach to religious voters.

Last year, the Democratic National Committee hired a minister, the Rev. Derrick Harkins, to lead its faith outreach efforts.

The establishment clause is the First Amendment provision that prohibits the federal and state governments from establishing an official religion, or from favoring or disfavoring one view of religion over another. Yet a tax exempt religious organization headed by Franklin Graham was allowed to use his tax exempt money to effect the outcome of a vote on NC Amendment one by entering a political foray and running TV ads favoring its passage.

The left has planned parenthood that does the same thing. Telling a religious organization they can't advertise for an amendment that they feel is part of their foundation is unAmerican.

This is funny...a Faith Outreach Director? In the past this position wasn't needed because Americans knew what a president's beliefs were. Not anymore. Obama's policies are so contrary to the Christianity of the Bible that it will take a Director to explain his new faith to the American people.

Sorry I want a modern president. Not a president from a party whose views are more in line with Puritanical values from Salem, Massachusetts. I want the Republicans to lose badly, hopefully reform themselves, and rearrange their misplaced values to compete with the Democrats next election because they really need to get their act together. The country is better off with two strong parties but I think the Republicans have become shortsighted and have failed to live up to their once great reputation as forward thinkers.

      Obama 2012.

You really need to stop typing in these places and do some serious research before making such statements. G. Bush did something in 2001 read it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_House_Office_of_Faith-Based_and_Neighborhood_Partnerships

I want a president who protects life, all life.
I want a president who protects liberty, including religious liberty.
I want a president who protects marriage and the family unit, because our society will crumble without it.
I want a president who will take a stand on morality, not twist it and mold into some new definition of morality.
I want a president who protects this nation with a strong military.
I want a president who stands up for America and doesn't apologize for us around the globe.
I want a president who takes fiscal responsibility.

@Lizard...Obama's new director of Faith is completely different from the partnership Bush created. Obama's man is to be an apologist, smoothing things over with Democrats who are shaken by Obama's recent announcement. Bush's department was organized to provide faith-based organizations with social services. The two are completely different.

      – marriage according to who's definition, yours?

I want a president who protects this nation with a strong military.
      – this country's military is BY FAR the largest and strongest on earth. We absolutely don't need to continue to spend the excessive amounts we do, in order to keep making it larger. We can destroy the entire world 20 times over, what's wrong with only 10?

I want a president who stands up for America and doesn't apologize for us around the globe.
      – what about when we do horrendous and stupid things, what's wrong with apologizing for your mistakes?

But Holly you cannot legislate morality, but protect everyone's religious liberty at the same time. You would have to have everyone disagree on what is moral or immoral if you were to do that.

I love how you flip-flop meanings...Could Bush do any wrong in your eyes? Probably not. Do you really have to have a president force a belief on everyone so you can live your life? Does it not feel good that freedom is really freedom for everyone and not what religious people want by controlling everyone to their beliefs?

So why aren't liberals up in arms about separation of church and state? "White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships"? Shouldn't they be out in the streets protesting this blatant use of federal dollars to force religion down the throats of the people?

    May 15, 2012 at 10:44 am |
    • GauisCaesar

You are uneducated about what separation of church and state means. A President having a religious adviser (or 20 of them) is not a violation of the clause. What separation means in that the govt doesn't mandate a religion on its people nor pick a denomination. What you are saying has NOTHING to do with that separation. Left-winged nuts are so sure religion must be a violation of law, but cannot simply research what the clause means. BTW, Bush had some, and virtually every conservative presidential candidate has had some as well.

Wow!!! At this stage?! What has happened during the past 3-1/2 years. Mr. Obama and his moronic/unpatriotic cronies must be getting really desperate. In essence, they have come to acknowledge that the American populace WILL NOT be fooled as easily as we were fooled the first time.

America, the White House is not available for sale to the highest bidder.

With Mr. Obama and my fellow Democrats at the helm, hypocrisy knows no bounds!

I think you mean that the American people will not be fooled again like we were under Bush's reign of terror (which, at times, resembled clown college except with horrible repercussions).

    • Blah blah the wheel's off your trailer

What has happened in the past 3-1/2 years? Well, the Obama administration has aggressively tackled the garbage they inherited from the republicans you support! The Obama administration has been sucessful is stabilizing our economy and saving millions of jobs in state, local and federal government! They have succeeded in saving the BIg Three and in creating over five millions new jobs despite the deliberate obstructionist measures by the un-American communist teapublican party! The illegitimate Iraq war that have taken over a million Iraqi and American lives and raised havoc on our economy, addiding an additional 3 plus trillion dollars to our deficit has come to an end and the abandoned and forgotten Afghan war is rapidly winding down. An additional 30 million Americans now have access to affordable healthcare and financial reform on Wall Street is now law of the land that serves to safeguard against another republican style economic meltdown! Public enemy # 1 OBL and many of his friends are dead and America is alot safer that it was under the failed and misguided leadership of GWB and the GOP! And in the past 3-1/2 years America's image around the world has been restored! All this accomplished despite the Jim Crow white sheet wearing cross burning white supremacist obstructionists in congress!

Faith for Obama is lying, cheating, breaking promises, cancelling the World Day of prayer, promoting Abortion, Gay Marriages.Even Muslims don't believe as Obama does. Certainly Christians don't. He thinks he is god, but he isn't. He should have focused attention on reducing the debt. He promised to do that even if he had to go line by line. All he has done is Increase the debt and promote corruption. The Fall of Obama gives the country reason to Hope again. It cannot happen, too, soon. Goodbye and good riddance to a narcissistic egomaniac who only sought to promote himself and belittle the USA.

    May 15, 2012 at 10:28 am |
    • JM

Wow. What the heck are you talking about?

Bush started a war in a country that didn't attack us resulting in the death of thousands; under his watch, the economy tanked; he lied to us (WMDs, etc.); he misrepresented us to the world and made us appear idiotic/ridiculous (freedom fries?).

And, yet, I imagine that you think he was wonderful and w/o fault?

Obama is trying to represent the American people.

Jesus didn't come and try to overthrow governments w/his teachings. He preached to small groups of people and told them to go into the world as a light in the darkness. He was most critical of the self-righteous religious hypocrites who thought that they were so much more holy than anyone else and that they 'deserved' God's grace (while others didn't).

      --
9 To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’
14 “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
      --

No wonder people don't want anything to do with Christianity when they believe that people who "hate" them are a reflection of Christ's teaching. Christ's teaching? Forgiveness, love, mercy, grace, good news.

The fall of Obama gives us hope for what? Another 9/11, another illegitimate Iraqi war? More dead American soldiers? Another inflated national debt? Another Afghan war? Another economic crisis? Trailing the industrial world in every facet of life? Having the rest of the world laugh at us for having a supreme court appointed so-called president with a 3rd grade education? Why don't you go jump off a f-ing bridge? Moron!

The original post was not about Bush and what he did or didn't do. So please address what Obama did or didn't do. He's addressing specific issues that he thinks Obama is guilty of. It's not about Bush, it's about Obama.Calling Bush a lousy president does not inherently make Obama a good one. In the end, every president needs to be able to stand on his own accomplishments. The record is that Obama has driven the debt up enormously. He is supporting the things he is accused of – it's public record. Defend or attack Obama's actions not Bushes.

It is a little too late to try and get cozy with the religious voters. Most Christians don't believe him when he says he is a Christian. He will not lose all of his black vote, for sure, but it will be very difficult for him to win anyone in the center or independent. This isn't 2008...people do see what he's done with the phrase "hope and change" and the line of being neo-political.

      No,

Do you realize that the god you worship was a killing machine or are you just blind to his actions in the OT? What he did in the OT doesn't warrant respecting any such being, who does inmoral acts towards those that he made. What kind of creature is he? And who are YOU for worshipping someone like that? Would you kill your own child if he told you to???
Where are you going to draw the line for what's morally right and what's wrong? I just don't understand religious people who can seem to be blind to his action and yet talk about how wonderful he is. That's just flat out crazy.

Is this latest Whitehouse move some kind of joke?

Saving the taxpayers the need for this new bureaucrat and some money by putting the kibosh on all religions in less than 500 words:

    ONLY FOR THE NEWCOMERS

    • There was probably no Abraham i.e. the foundations of Judaism, Christianity and Islam are non-existent.

    • There was probably no Moses i.e the pillars of Judaism, Christianity and Islam have no strength of purpose.

    prob•a•bly
Adverb: Almost certainly; as far as one knows or can tell.

    • There was no Gabriel i.e. Islam fails as a religion. Christianity partially fails.

    • There was no Easter i.e. Christianity completely fails as a religion.

    • There was no Moroni i.e. Mormonism is nothing more than a business cult.

    • Sacred/revered cows, monkey gods, castes, reincarnations and therefore Hinduism fails as a religion.

    • Fat Buddhas here, skinny Buddhas there, reincarnated Buddhas everywhere makes for a no on Buddhism.

Added details available upon written request.

A quick search will put the kibosh on any other groups calling themselves a religion.

    e.g. Taoism

"The origins of Taoism are unclear. Traditionally, Lao-tzu who lived in the sixth century is regarded as its founder. Its early philosophic foundations and its later beliefs and rituals are two completely different ways of life. Today (1982) Taoism claims 31,286,000 followers.

Legend says that Lao-tzu was immaculately conceived by a shooting star; carried in his mother's womb for eighty-two years; and born a full grown wise old man. "

Obama has no faith. Otherwise he wouldn't have sunk to the Naxis low of George Soros and sent a plane pulling a bashing banner of the GOP to Liberty College where Romney was giving a commencement speech to a religious based college. He is the lowest of the low as the plane buzzed overhead trying to drown out Romney's comments. If it's dirty war he wants then GOP get with the program you don't owe this hoe handling bum any courteous.

@1st sgt. That is nonsense and you know it. Do you really believe that Obama hired a plane to fly over Romney's event? How foolish could a person be. From what I read from the teabagging wingnuts Obama has control of heaven and earth. He is single handedly attacking the world to destroy everything. What a powerfull guy he must be. Even if everything you all say is true, wouldn't you rather a powerful man like this be on your side? m0r0n.

Isn't it amazing that, in the 21st Century, having probed the outer reaches of the Universe, broken the genetic code and understood sub-atomic particles, we humans elect the most powerful man in the World based on his pandering to a group of simpletons who form their view of the Universe on 2,000 year old Palestinian mythology.

    May 14, 2012 at 9:47 pm |
    • PerceivedReality

      Colin,
We haven't probed the universe, we have observed it, and really don't understand it. We still do not understand the physics of gravity, the graviton is a theory. DNA has been deciphered to a degree but we cannot make it, and I believe are opening a Pandora's box. Scientists do not understand sub-atomic particles in more than a cursory level. Where one scientist perceives particle, another will perceive wave. Jesus is not a myth, he is alive.

      Gospel of Thomas:

28 Jesus said, "I took my stand in the midst of the world, and in flesh I appeared to them. I found them all drunk, and I did not find any of them thirsty. My soul ached for the children of humanity, because they are blind in their hearts and do not see, for they came into the world empty, and they also seek to depart from the world empty.

But meanwhile they are drunk. When they shake off their wine, then they will change their ways."

29 Jesus said, "If the flesh came into being because of spirit, that is a marvel, but if spirit came into being because of the body, that is a marvel of marvels.

Yet I marvel at how this great wealth has come to dwell in this poverty."

These verses make me think of the Atheist's world view, all they can sense is the universe/world/material. I believe vers 29 is speaking of the creation of the universe. I too marvel at all this material wealth out of the absolute poverty before the singularity of the big bang theory.

    • Reality

Since we are thu-mping the bible:

JC's family and friends had it right 2000 years ago ( Mark 3: 21 "And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.")

Said passage is one of the few judged to be authentic by most contemporary NT scholars. e.g. See Professor Ludemann's conclusion in his book, Jesus After 2000 Years, p. 24 and p. 694.

Actually, Jesus was a bit "touched". After all he thought he spoke to Satan, thought he changed water into wine, thought he raised Lazarus from the dead etc. In today's world, said Jesus would be declared legally insane.

Or did P, M, M, L and J simply make him into a first century magic-man via their epistles and gospels of semi-fiction? Many contemporary NT experts after thorough analyses of all the scriptures go with the latter magic-man conclusion with J's gospel being mostly fiction.

Obviously, today's followers of Paul et al's "magic-man" are also a bit on the odd side believing in all the Christian mumbo jumbo about bodies resurrecting, and exorcisms, and miracles, and "magic-man atonement, and infallible, old, European/Utah white men, and 24/7 body/blood sacrifices followed by consumption of said sacrifices. Yummy!!!!

So why do we really care what a first century CE, illiterate, long-dead, preacher/magic man would do or say?

perceived reality.. your Jesus could have, just for fun, drawn a world map showing the places that were unknown to civilization at the time... Australia, Antarctica, North America , China, with JCs connections i sure he could have drawn a world map and explained to humanity the place they lived in? but no, only the world known at the time to the men who wrote the bible was mentioned ,,

PerceivedReality,,,. an aircraft stays in the air because of ..(A) Prayer. . (B) an understanding of Bernoulli principles and practical applications of it for wing design?. There is no such thing as an atheists world view,, we all believe in different things except one., I would say that most atheists however have much more exciting view of the world than a simple god did it scenario.. think about this,, you are as old as the universe, most of the atoms in your body were forged in the heart of long dead stars, and may have been in many other objects and beings before becoming you. You are a child of the universe for real.. learn some real exciting facts and enjoy life.. don't dwell on on death. opps there's my world view ozzing ..out sorry ...

      May 15, 2012 at 1:21 am |
    • PerceivedReality

      Tom,
I am not suprised I lost you at "Graviton" If I had mentioned "A-n-a-l prolapse, I am sure you would have been up to speed.

Reality, Since when is philosophy considered fiction?

evolvedDNA, Most American Indian tribes where visited by a "Pale Prophet" Some American Indian tribes knew "The Great Spirit" as "Yo ho wah" sounds an awful lot like "Yahoveh" coincidence?

Also, the people of the the first century may have known more about geography than we think, ever heard of The Las Lunas Decalogue?

As far as being made of recycled material, and the fact that our lifeforms couldn't function without the elements that were made from supernova, only increases the inprobability of our fromation.

You think we came from nothing, live for nothing and will eventually be utterly nothing, for nothing, what a waste of everything!

Na, I will stick with Jesus, what have I got to lose?

PerceivedReality...There are all sorts of stones and mysteries regarding the ancients that are still being deciphered... it is no more proof of a god ..look at Stonehenge.. many ideas of what it represents and even to day we are not completely sure how the stones were moved or mounted. Your Decaloque is some what suspect... Even the pyramids are still open to investigation as to construction. Tribes being visited by spirits... many ancient religions used hallucinogenic drugs to enhance the experience, and some still do...I am not surprised that they saw spirits...As I had asked JC could have told the world about the planet but he did not...the writers did not know. You need to learn a little more regarding the formation of the planet..all the materials were here to allow Abiogenesis, and then evolution. We admit that what sparked abiogenesis is still open to debate, and if you like you can claim god did it.. but other religions may not agree with you. As far as coming from nothing.. god must have done the same..I am not living for nothing, .I am enjoying life, with out wasting the short time we have trying to please a god of whom there is absolutely no proof , or reasons to do do. You think that there is an afterlife just for "mankind"... that is truly the ultimate ego drive..
