My Take: What the Bible really says about homosexuality

Editor's note: Daniel A. Helminiak, who was ordained a priest in Rome, is a theologian, psychotherapist and author of “What the Bible Really Says about homosexuality" and books on contemporary spirituality. He is a professor of psychology at the University of West Georgia.

By Daniel A. Helminiak, Special to CNN

President Barack Obama’s support of same-sex marriage, like blood in the water, has conservative sharks circling for a kill. In a nation that touts separation of religion and government, religious-based arguments command this battle. Lurking beneath anti-gay forays, you inevitably find religion and, above all, the Bible.

We now face religious jingoism, the imposition of personal beliefs on the whole pluralistic society. Worse still, these beliefs are irrational, just a fiction of blind conviction. Nowhere does the Bible actually oppose homosexuality.

In the past 60 years, we have learned more about sex, by far, than in preceding millennia. Is it likely that an ancient people, who thought the male was the basic biological model and the world flat, understood homosexuality as we do today? Could they have even addressed the questions about homosexuality that we grapple with today? Of course not.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

Hard evidence supports this commonsensical expectation. Taken on its own terms, read in the original languages, placed back into its historical context, the Bible is ho-hum on homosexuality, unless – as with heterosexuality – injustice and abuse are involved.

That, in fact, was the case among the Sodomites (Genesis 19), whose experience is frequently cited by modern anti-gay critics. The Sodomites wanted to rape the visitors whom Lot, the one just man in the city, welcomed in hospitality for the night.

The Bible itself is lucid on the sin of Sodom: pride, lack of concern for the poor and needy (Ezekiel 16:48-49); hatred of strangers and cruelty to guests (Wisdom 19:13); arrogance (Sirach/Ecclesiaticus 16:8); evildoing, injustice, oppression of the widow and orphan (Isaiah 1:17); adultery (in those days, the use of another man’s property), and lying (Jeremiah 23:12).

But nowhere are same-sex acts named as the sin of Sodom. That intended gang rape only expressed the greater sin, condemned in the Bible from cover to cover: hatred, injustice, cruelty, lack of concern for others. Hence, Jesus says “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 19:19; Mark 12:31); and “By this will they know you are my disciples” (John 13:35).

How inverted these values have become! In the name of Jesus, evangelicals and Catholic bishops make sex the Christian litmus test and are willing to sacrifice the social safety net in return.

The longest biblical passage on male-male sex is Romans 1:26-27: "Their women exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural, and in the same way also the men, giving up natural intercourse with women, were consumed with passion for one another."

The Greek term para physin has been translated unnatural; it should read atypical or unusual. In the technical sense, yes, the Stoic philosophers did use para physin to mean unnatural, but this term also had a widespread popular meaning. It is this latter meaning that informs Paul's writing. It carries no ethical condemnation.

Compare the passage on male-male sex to Romans 11:24. There, Paul applies the term para physin to God. God grafted the Gentiles into the Jewish people, a wild branch into a cultivated vine. Not your standard practice! An unusual thing to do — atypical, nothing more. The anti-gay "unnatural" hullabaloo rests on a mistranslation.

Besides, Paul used two other words to describe male-male sex: dishonorable (1:24, 26) and unseemly (1:27). But for Paul, neither carried ethical weight. In 2 Corinthians 6:8 and 11:21, Paul says that even he was held in dishonor — for preaching Christ. Clearly, these words merely indicate social disrepute, not truly unethical behavior.

In this passage Paul is referring to the ancient Jewish Law: Leviticus 18:22, the “abomination” of a man’s lying with another man. Paul sees male-male sex as an impurity, a taboo, uncleanness — in other words, “abomination.” Introducing this discussion in 1:24, he says so outright: "God gave them up … to impurity."

But Jesus taught lucidly that Jewish requirements for purity — varied cultural traditions — do not matter before God. What matters is purity of heart.

“It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles,” reads Matthew 15. “What comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this is what defiles. For out of the heart come evil intentions, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile.”

Or again, Jesus taught, “Everyone who looks at a women with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:28). Jesus rejected the purity requirements of the Jewish Law.

In calling it unclean, Paul was not condemning male-male sex. He had terms to express condemnation. Before and after his section on sex, he used truly condemnatory terms: godless, evil, wicked or unjust, not to be done. But he never used ethical terms around that issue of sex.

As for marriage, again, the Bible is more liberal than we hear today. The Jewish patriarchs had many wives and concubines. David and Jonathan, Ruth and Naomi, and Daniel and the palace master were probably lovers.

The Bible’s Song of Songs is a paean to romantic love with no mention of children or a married couple. Jesus never mentioned same-sex behaviors, although he did heal the “servant” — pais, a Greek term for male lover — of the Roman Centurion.

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

Paul discouraged marriage because he believed the world would soon end. Still, he encouraged people with sexual needs to marry, and he never linked sex and procreation.

Were God-given reason to prevail, rather than knee-jerk religion, we would not be having a heated debate over gay marriage. “Liberty and justice for all,” marvel at the diversity of creation, welcome for one another: these, alas, are true biblical values.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Daniel A. Helminiak.

Even if ho.mos.e.x.uality is a sin, according to 1 Corinthians 6:18 it is only a sin against the people committing the act. Stop worrying about their sins and stop trying to get the government to enforce religious laws. The U.S. is not in the middle east.

Helminiak is a classic revisionist who uses his moral, cultural, and historical relativism as a hermeneutical key for interpreting the Bible. I have read his book on the subject and beyond what I've already described, he argues ad hominem. He ignores the obvious and argues the ridiculous with the greatest of ease. He goes to extenuated extremes to justify his own sinful lifestyle. He is in for a rude awakening someday.

Sooo the Old Testament was pretty much done away with??? Then why must we pray for forgiveness to have out SINS cleanse. What are sins? Transgressions of the law... You must see where I'm getting at. The law isn't void, we still have an obligation as Christians to try to be good in God's eyes and uphold his most holy commandments. The only difference is we are redeemed from our sins (when we plead with God) because Jesus died on the cross for us whereas the Jews had to burn an offering to receive atonement for their sins. Do you think if I went out and killed 1000 babies that God would be fine and say "Oh well... My laws are ridiculous.... Especially the one about not killing people." I think I've made my point to my brethren in Christ quite clear. You can choose not to believe me or you can actually open up that dusty old bible on your shel and study it!

"16 Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up." Hosea 13:16

As long as the babies were the children of your God's enemies then I guess it's okay...at least according to your bible.

You want the children not to be killed or what? The main thing is they also did not want their children killed. He was not doing it to make them happy but that doesn't mean He was happy. I do not feel happy killing a man who wants me dead or is prepared to kill my children. It stops them.

  8. Believer

In the beginning God created Adam, He saw that he was lonely and caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam and took one of his ribs and created Evevto be his helpmate, wife and mother of his children. Notice, the Bible says He created a man and a woman. The Old Testament was the chronicals of the Jewish people, God gave them Laws to live by and they violated everyone of them. Hebwas testing their faithfulness to Him. The New Teatament is completely different, we no longer live by the Law, we live by grace. because God sent His only son to die on the cross for our sins. Yes, you must have faith to believe and this can NOT be explained Scientically. No scientist has been able to disprove any word of the Bible. God loves every one, He loved us first, but He gave us freewill to choose to love Him in return. He will never force Himself on anyone. Innthe O.T.God did not approve of thenJewish people's behavior, He was ashamed of some of their acts. If thiss sounds familiar, it's because we behave in the same ways. Yes, God is Love, but He is also a jealous and vengeful God. Most of the instances under the Law, never happened, it was mostly a warning to the people. God was not pleased with their actions, just as we parents are not always proud of things our own children do. I punished mine for bad behavior. And, sadly our nation which was founde on religious freedom has suffered many atrocities , like 9-11 , slavery, act. I do not hate gays or Lesbians, it is till a free country and one can choose how they want to live. I would never force my faith on anyone, that's the Holy Spirits duty, not mine. Heaven and hell are real places, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord until He calls us Home. We are just strangers passing through this life and eternity is forever, I pray that each and everyone of you will come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christt, Our LORD and Savior. We only get one chance here on earth and I hope you make the right decisions. All it takes. Is to have the faith of a little child, they know their parents are there for them and the Heavenly Father is there for us. It is your choice to believe or not to believe. I pray that some of you will think on these things and make the right decision!

In the beginning man created god. And from then on it was used to control. You don't need religion to have good morals. Cast away the farce that is god and religion.

If Eve was crafted from Adam's rib, she was his genetic twin. If she was made a woman, she must have been transsexual.

Your god created the first LGBT couple, and the first same sex marriage.

And the ancient Greeks believed that the first woman, Pandora, released all of the woes upon the world through her disobedience, and that Prometheus stole fire from Zeus and gave it to we mortals. All the world's myth systems have similar stories. In the Hebrew case. this myth teaches why women shouldn't be trusted with decision-making, and why the Sabbath has significance, amongst other things. Taking these stories literally is like taking Jesus parables as factual tales instead of teaching tools, you end up stripping them of their actual meaning.

Why do you believe that, Believer? Were you raised in it and just conformed? Have you ever seen any true miracles or indisputable evidence of the existence of your specific god (interpretations of coincidences and gut feelings are NOT even close to evidence)? Do you have a reason to believe that your books is right and all the others are wrong?

Why do you believe that? Is it really just because enough people told it to you, and once you accepted, your imagination did the rest?

If you actually have proof, I would love to read it. Seriously. But no more of that gibberish you posted above. Evidence.

The man who wrote the article is a reprobate. He knows the Word of God , yet he perverts it.
It would have been better for him if he was never born.
There is a warning to characters like him...Scriptures in 2Peter an Jude describe them.

They call themselves experts and teachers, but deny the Word of God and the Holy Spirit of God, who testifies to the Truth. They are reprobates.
When their day of Appointment comes, they will face the fearful judgment of holy God. ..
    .
But most of those who go this far, have gone too far, and crossed God's line. They have rejected the testimony of the Spirit of God , committing unpardonable sin. For them is no sacrifice left!

Unless, of course, he's correct and you all have been following the false interpretation. You might say that it wasn't your fault. You were only following what you were told to believe, right? But witness all the good people who followed their conscience and, like slavery, just knew what the right spirit of scripture truly was all along. In that light it's hard to see you all as anything other than people who chose to persecute because you personally didn't like the people in question, and most would consider that a real sin.

      @Berk
What do YOU know WHY do I believe?!
People like you who deny and silence the voice of their consciences on which God imprinted the knowledge of Himself and ability to discern right from wrong, are DEAD while they're still alive.
How can you know anything concerning God, His Word, and what is Truth, since you've rejected the witness of the Spirit fo God who is the Spirit of Truth?
That's why to you every religion is the same and you can't discern the Truth. But God said that's the very thing that happens to those who, by love of Self and pride in their hearts, reject the truth .
He gives them the spirit of stupor so that they can't see where they're going and the enemy of their souls takes advantage of them, leading them deeper and deeper into darkness.

And just how dare you compare the injustice and oppression of slavery that man imposed on another man, with the issues "gays" are fighting for, to have definition of god- ordained insti/tution of marriage degraded and desecrated? For you and others, who try to put those in same category, this is even in itself an abomination....

Listen friend! There is nothing in this world you or anyone else can do to disguise the issue of "gays" and make it on the same level as other human rights issues!.... Because this issue is about acceptance of something which we all KNOW that is wrong and unnatural, even as the nature itself shows, and it is against purpose and intent of God for humankind.
Even the godless barbarians of ages past knew and understood this and didn't go so far into deprivation as the generation of godless barbarians of today who in imaginations of their darkened minds think that they have surpassed their need for any moral standard, because by rejecting God who gave them life, they've become gods to themselves.
Seeing this is already the evidence of fulfilled prophecy of the Scriptures for the days we're living in.

I thank God that He wont' allow it go on and on, lest there be nothing left on this earth but godless barbarism which earth has never seen, surpassing any other, even from the beginning of time.

You and others like you, can delude yourself in imagination of your own minds, thinking that you can interpret the Scriptures any which way you fancy, but if you reject the Spirit of Truth who is the Holy spirit of God and His testimony, you're lost and in satan's grip! And he will spin the web of lies around you so tight, that the only thing left for you is to live your life in deluding yourself in his lies, till you cross over to eternity and then face the Truth you rejected....unless you take heed to warning of the Spirit of God while you still have time, and seek Him out in humility of your heart not being motivated by your own Self, andf the fallen nature that's driving you, which we all have...
You know the Way, just like this man who wrote the article.... That's why it will be better for those who never knew nor were exposed to the Word fo God , then for you who knew, but rejected!!!

      """""""""""""""
      @YR
Speaking THE TRUTH is NOT judging.
But to those who have not the love of truth in their hearts, it is a great offence and a thorn in their side!

    Ho-mose-xuality in the 21st century:

    ONLY FOR THE NEWCOMERS–-–>>>>

"Abrahamics" believe that their god created all of us and of course that includes the g-ay members of the human race. Also, those who have studied ho-mo-se-xuality have determined that there is no choice involved therefore ga-ys are ga-y because god made them that way.

    To wit:

o The Royal College of Psy-chiatrists stated in 2007:

“ Despite almost a century of psy-choanalytic and psy-chological speculation, there is no substantive evidence to support the suggestion that the nature of parenting or early childhood experiences play any role in the formation of a person’s fundamental heteros-exual or hom-ose-xual orientation. It would appear that s-exual orientation is biological in nature, determined by a complex interplay of ge-netic factors and the early ut-erine environment. Se-xual orientation is therefore not a choice.[60] "

"Garcia-Falgueras and Swaab state in the abstract of their 2010 study, "The fe-tal brain develops during the intraut-erine period in the male direction through a direct action of tes-tosterone on the developing nerve cells, or in the female direction through the absence of this hor-mone surge. In this way, our gender identi-ty (the conviction of belonging to the male or female gender) and s-exual orientation are programmed or organized into our brain structures when we are still in the womb. There is no indication that social environment after birth has an effect on gender ident–ity or s-exual orientation."[8

See also the Philadelphia Inquirer review “Gay Gene, Deconstructed”, 12/12/2011. Said review addresses the following “How do genes associated with ho-mose-xuality avoid being weeded out by Darwinian evolution?”

Of course, those gays who belong to Abrahamic religions supposedly abide by the rules of no adu-ltery or for-nication allowed.

And because of basic biology differences said monogamous ventures should always be called same-se-x unions not same-se-x marriages.

From below, on top, backwards, forwards, from this side of the Moon and from the other side too, ga-y s-exual activity is still mutual mas-turbation caused by one or more complex s-exual differences. Some differences are visually obvious in for example the complex maleness of DeGeneres, Billy Jean King and Rosie O'Donnell.

This is a beautiful article. I'm an agnostic and even I don't believe the bible is as hateful as many make it seem. Well done

    May 16, 2012 at 8:21 pm |
    • Bootyfunk

Andy, you have not read the bible. the bible supports slavery. the bible says to kill g.ays, non-virgin brides, disobedient children and anyone working on the weekend. most people that haven't read the bible have no idea what it says. they only know the party cherry picked for review on sundays at church. study after study shows that atheists have more knowledge of the bible than the christians that claim to lead their life by it.

      Leviticus 20:13
      King James Version (KJV)
13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

still think the bible is all about warm fuzzy feelings?

william, you obviously haven't read the bible either. i quoted the passage saying to kill g.ays above, but you still say it's not in the bible? LOL. you are a mindless sheep. did you bother to look up anything i said? nothing i said is a lie.

also, i'm very happy. i have a lovely fiance and i live on maui. i surf every other day and love my life. dropping the christian fairy tale is one of the most liberating experiences a person can have.

throw out your insults, i'll throw some back. but answer my charge - read the bible from cover to cover as i have and tell me it doesn't say those horrible things. and there's lots more evil and disgust in that book than what i have mentioned.

    • Bob

Bootyfunk is entirely correct that the bible has a lot of nasty stuff in it, mostly in the form of demands purportedly by god for humans to do some pretty evil stuff. For example:

      Numbers 31:17-18
17 Now kiII all the boys. And kiII every woman who has slept with a man,
18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

Deuteronomy 13:6 – “If your brother, your mother’s son or your son or daughter, or the wife you cherish, or your friend who is as your own soul entice you secretly, saying, let us go and serve other gods … you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death”

Note that the bible is also very clear that you should sacrifice and burn an animal today because the smell makes sicko Christian sky fairy happy. No, you don't get to use the parts for food. You burn them, a complete waste of the poor animal.

Yes, the bible really says that, everyone. Yes, it's in Leviticus, look it up. Yes, Jesus is claimed in the bible to have said that the OT commands still apply. No exceptions. But even if you think the OT was god's mistaken first go around, you have to ask why a perfect, loving enti-ty would ever put such horrid instructions in there. If you think rationally at all, that is.

And then, if you disagree with my interpretation, ask yourself how it is that your "god" couldn't come up with a better way to communicate than a book that is so readily subject to so many interpretations and to being taken "out of context", and has so many mistakes in it. Pretty pathetic god that you've made for yourself.

So get out your sacrificial knife or your nasty sky creature will torture you eternally. Or just take a closer look at your foolish supersti-tions, understand that they are just silly, and toss them into the dustbin with all the rest of the gods that man has created.

Bfunk- what good does it do for an atheist to know more about the bible? In fact if in case what they know turns out to be true, as in maybe their is a God, then their accountabilty will be so high that there will be very little chance for any forgiveness! You see God judges those who do not know of him with a different set of standards as they are unknowingly sinning. There are many things in the bible like slavery, but you obviously know nothing about the bible youself as you would understand what that slavery actually envolved. So yes one may know scripture, even all by heart,

      May 16, 2012 at 11:51 pm |
    • mema

...but do they have an understanding of scripture. Most likely not! This is because the bible teaches that if ones heart is set against it, no insight will be given. So read till your hearts content.

Not only are there tons of religeons that can't agree on anything, each one has many sub sets who pick and choose what the get to "believe" in and use it to benefit themselves, while completely ignoring other parts. Ok, I admit that I need someone to explain this to me.. What is Daniel talking about when he says, "In the name of Jesus, evangelicals and Catholic bishops make s-e-x the Christian litmus test and are willing to sacrifice the social safety net in return."?

What does he mean about sacrificing the social safety net?

    May 16, 2012 at 7:35 pm |

He means that christians will vote for people who want to abolish social programs just because they're against gay marriage. Frankly, I don't see how anyone who says they follow the word of christ can oppose welfare, medicare, or any other form of state aid.

There's a lot of one line dismissals of the author's conclusions, and all they have an argument that runs along the lines of "He doesn't agree with me, and I KNOW I'm right, so he MUST be wrong. No need to examine his case then."

I haven't read all of the posts, but do you recall any of the critics making a qualified attempt to challenge the Greek word usage, or any other part of the author's scholarly findings? I'm guessing no, but someone may have tried at least. That would be interesting to read.

Much of the Gospels plays out kinda like a Tv movie does! You have to watch it from beginning to end if one is going to find it enlightening! Still, many people just get to see it only after they do their dirty work which leaves them with a bad taste in their mouth. People like you who see the Bible as being contradictory saw only bits and gragments and not the whole show!
