My Take: The Bible condemns a lot, but here's why we focus on homosexuality

By R. Albert Mohler Jr., Special to CNN

Are conservative Christians hypocritical and selective when it comes to the Bible’s condemnation of homosexuality? With all that the Bible condemns, why the focus on gay sex and same-sex marriage?

Given the heated nature of our current debates, it’s a question conservative Christians have learned to expect. “Look,” we are told, “the Bible condemns eating shellfish, wearing mixed fabrics and any number of other things. Why do you ignore those things and insist that the Bible must be obeyed when it comes to sex?”

On its face, it’s a fair question. But it can be posed in two very different ways.

First, the question can be asked to suggest that the Bible’s clear condemnation of sexual sins can simply be set aside. The other way of posing the question represents a genuine attempt to understand how the Bible is to be rightly applied to life today.

In truth, those asking the question the first way really don’t want an answer.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

An honest consideration of the Bible reveals that most of the biblical laws people point to in asking this question, such as laws against eating shellfish or wearing mixed fabrics, are part of the holiness code assigned to Israel in the Old Testament. That code was to set Israel, God’s covenant people, apart from all other nations on everything from morality to diet.

As the Book of Acts makes clear, Christians are not obligated to follow this holiness code. This is made clear in Peter’s vision in Acts 10:15. Peter is told, “What God has made clean, do not call common.”

In other words, there is no kosher code for Christians. Christians are not concerned with eating kosher foods and avoiding all others. That part of the law is no longer binding, and Christians can enjoy shrimp and pork with no injury to conscience.

The Bible’s commands on sexual behavior, on the other hand, are continued in the New Testament. When it comes to homosexuality, the Bible’s teaching is consistent, pervasive, uniform and set within a larger context of law and Gospel.

My Take: The Christian case for gay marriage

The Old Testament clearly condemns male homosexuality along with adultery, bestiality, incest and any sex outside the covenant of marriage. The New Testament does not lessen this concern but amplifies it.

The New Testament condemns both male and female homosexual behavior. The Apostle Paul, for example, points specifically to homosexuality as evidence of human sinfulness. His point is not merely that homosexuals are sinners but that all humanity has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

The New Testament condemns a full range of sexual sins, and homosexuality is specified among these sins. In Romans, Paul refers to homosexuality in terms of “dishonorable passions,” “contrary to nature” and “shameless.” As New Testament scholar Robert Gagnon has stated, the Bible’s indictment “encompasses every and any form of homosexual behavior.”

Your Take: Rethinking the Bible on homosexuality?

Some people then ask, “What about slavery and polygamy?” In the first place, the New Testament never commands slavery, and it prizes freedom and human dignity. For this reason, the abolitionist movement was largely led by Christians, armed with Christian conviction.

The Old Testament did allow for polygamy, though it normalizes heterosexual monogamy. In the New Testament, Jesus made clear that marriage was always meant to be one man and one woman.

“Have you not read that He who created them made them male and female?” Jesus asked in Matthew. "Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” For this reason, Christians have opposed polygamy on biblical grounds.

Why are Christians so concerned with homosexuality? In the first place, that question is answered by the simple fact that it is the most pressing moral question of our times. Christians must be concerned about adultery, pornography, injustice, dishonesty and everything the Bible names as sin. But when my phone rings with a call from a reporter these days, the question I am asked is never adultery or pornography. It is about homosexuality.

Christians who are seriously committed to the authority of the Bible have no choice but to affirm all that the Bible teaches, including its condemnation of homosexuality. At the same time, our confidence is that God condemns those things that will bring his human creatures harm and commands those things that will lead to true human happiness and flourishing.

In other words, we understand that the Bible condemns all forms of sin because our Creator knows what is best for us. The Bible names sins specifically so that each of us will recognize our own sinfulness and look to Christ for salvation and the forgiveness of our sins.

Christian love requires that we believe and teach what the Bible teaches and that we do so with both strong conviction and humble hearts. The Church must repent of our failures in both of these tasks, but we must not be silent where the Bible speaks.

Are Christians hypocrites in insisting that homosexual behavior is sin? We, too, are sinners, and hypocrisy and inconsistency are perpetual dangers.

The church failed miserably in the face of the challenge of divorce. This requires an honest admission and strong corrective.

At the same time, this painful failure must remind us that we must not fail to answer rightly when asked what the Bible teaches about homosexuality. Love requires us to tell the truth.

  1. lets think for a moment

It seems peculiar that the most degrading and venomous individuals on this little chit-chat, are the very ones advocating equality and tolerance. Practice what you preach, and don't belittle Christians for attempting to do the same.

Agreed. All I hear is how christians are bigots and hate. You read the post and christians are only quoting bible verses not calling names.

Really? So denying someone their rights under the law isn't degrading? Hypocrite.

It's interesting the comments regarding the Bible as invented, fairy stories, flawed, false, etc. So, what philosophy or moral code do those who make these accusations claim. What and who (other humans) validates their moral code. The Bible condemns everyone. All have sinned and have fallen short. Nobody on earth is perfect or worthy. Understandably, some people have not accepted that precept.

I'm glad that I have Jesus in my life. There are close to 2.1 billion people who give testimony to the salvation and blessings that our Lord sacrificed His life to give us.

You too can have salvation. Here is why and here is how, if you are sincere. There is someone reading this blog who is ready for a change in their life, right now. Don't wait. Jesus is always and right now ready for you to invite Him into your life.

God Is The Creator Of Life

Romans 1:20-21: “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.”God reveals himself to us – His divine nature and personal qualities – through creation. We must acknowledge God as the Creator and sustainer of life.

Why We Need Salvation – The Fact Of Our Sin

Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”We must recognize that we are sinners and that we do not meet God’s perfect standards. Sin is serious in God’s sight and includes thoughts, words and actions. All sin (i.e. hatred and lust) makes us sinners not just the big, obvious sins like murder and adultery (Romans 5:12).

    Man’s Inability

Romans 3:10: “As it is written: There is no one righteous, not even one.”No one can earn right standing with God. We must understand that our good deeds or religion are unacceptable to God because our good works cannot cancel out our sin. For a view of man’s sinful condition, read Romans 3:10-18.

    The Penalty Of Sin

Romans 6:23a: “For the wages of sin is death.”God’s holiness demands a penalty (consequence) for our sin, which is death. Eternal death is separation from God forever in Hell. God is a just God, and He demands punishment for every sin. Justice is getting what we deserve, because of our sin, we deserve death.

    God’s Plan Of Salvation

Romans 5:8: “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”God sent His Son Jesus Christ to pay the penalty for our sin by dying on the cross. God is a God of mercy and He sent Jesus to take our sin upon Himself and the punishment we deserve. Mercy is not getting what we deserve, we deserve death, and Jesus took our place.

    God’s Promise Of Eternal Life

Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”Eternal life is a free gift from God, there is nothing we can do to earn eternal life. Grace is getting what we don’t deserve. Because of God’s amazing grace, He has given us eternal life through Jesus Christ!

    Man’s Responsibility

Romans 10:9-10: “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.”We must believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God Who died for us on the cross, rose from the dead, and is Lord. We must put our trust in Jesus alone to make us right with God. Salvation involves believing in our hearts (inward belief) and an outward confession that Jesus is Lord.

Romans 10:13: “For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”There is no complicated formula to salvation; Jesus paid the price of our sin for us. Our response is to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. If we do, we will be saved from eternal death in Hell to eternal life in Heaven.

    Results Of Salvation

Romans 8:1: “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”By accepting Jesus’ death as a payment for our sins, we will never be condemned for our sins.

Romans 5:1: “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”Peace with God means we have been reconciled to Him through Jesus Christ. We can now have a relationship with the living God because sin no longer separates us from Him.

Are you uncertain that if you were to die today you would go to Heaven? Have you followed the Roman Road to salvation? Will you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior today? You can pray to God right now and claim the promises of His word as your own.

•Admit that you have sinned against God and ask Him for forgiveness.
•Believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God Who died for you on the cross, rose from the dead, and is Lord.

•Call upon Jesus Christ to be your Lord and Savior.
If you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior today, we praise God for your decision! We encourage you to grow in your walk with God by praying to Him, reading the Bible, and joining a Bible believing church. Share with others the Roman Road to salvation, so they too may know of God’s love and amazing grace.

What moral code we claim is irrelevant. Even if everyone who condemned the Bible was a serial killer, that wouldn't change the fact that the Bible is bull****. Your quotes prove nothing. You can scream Biblical verses all you like, it changes nothing. At the end of the day, you still lack a single logical argument for the proposition that the Bible is objectively true. Until you get one, don't expect rational people to take you seriously.

BJ, the Bible is a collection of made up stories that has zero corroboration from any outside source. Most of the Old Testament was put together upon the return from Babylonian captivity to provide stories for the defeated Jews to rally around.
The two stories of creation in Genesis are ridiculous no matter how you look at them; they violate the laws of science at every turn. There is zero archeological support for any of the miraculous stories such as the Flood, the Tower of Babel, any of the Exodus stories, Sodom and Gomorrah, the invasion of Canaan, the sun standing still and so on. It does, however, glorify slaughter, incest and polygamy.
The New Testament was written by unknown people some time after the alleged life of the alleged Jesus, and most of it is the writings of someone identified as Paul. So what we really have is Paulism. Men, by way of committees, put together the Bible as we now see it, deciding what stayed and what went.
Quoting the Bible proves as much as quoting a Harry Potter story or Scientology writings. You believe the Bible because; a. the way you were brought up (like I was), or b. you are gullible enough to believe fantastic, made up fairy tales.
When I was a child, I thought as a child and believed these stories, now that I am a man I put off childish things and use my brain and reason to determine reality and how the world actually works. Knowledge and reason removed the scales of blindness from my eyes and mind and the world has now become a marvelous, wondrous place.

Skip the bible (old and new testament) The fastest way to becoming an atheist? Read the bible, cover to cover, front to back like any other text. This stuff was created by primative desert dwelling humans who had no idea at all with regards to the world, the universe etc. It is sad that some of our species needs to look back at these stories as anything more than what they are and that is just stories. Religion was invented over 1500 years before the human discovery of what we now know to be modern science. There is NO SCIENCE in the bible at all.

Divorce is mentioned many times in the OT and the NT. Your Jesus clearly mentions it in the "gospels". He states that if you divorce and remarry you are committing adultery. Yet you seldom hear this from the pulpit.

Why? Because it might make the sheep uncomfortable. Better to hammer at gay marriage. They won't be upset at that and they'll still come to church with open wallets.

Why are you so afraid to discuss this? Instead you post "divorce is man made". What's your point?

The problem with these churches isn't divorce as much as it is blessing a second marriage in their church.
How can the church claim to put God's blessing on adultery, while they can condemn what those in the secular world do?
Mark 10:11 And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her.
Mark 10:12 And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.

What struck me first about this article is he was discussing ceremonial laws in Leveticus and then tried inferring the Leveticus passage used against gay people wasn't part of it. This could not be further from the truth. It comes directly after God telling us not to sacrifice our children to Molech. He then has the audacity to discuss Romans without admitting its condemning idolatry. At least he gave a real sense of why some people focus on condemning gay people but the point offered was not the one intended.

Christ gave His life for all of us, we are all sinners. No one gets a pass though. Not you, not me, no one. As Christians, we should not condemn and must be willing to lay down our own lives for those we would like to see saved. They are good enough that He laid down His life for the sinner, can we do less, even if only metaphorically? Only by our love will men know we are Christ's and that love calls for our all..... ALL.

Some nails he hits right on the head, others he missed completely. Must have bloody thumbs. Only in a nation ruled by religious laws could these bans stand. Since our nation has a separation between, they are harder to defend. In a strictly secular sense, the state has little overriding interest in such bans on most any type of marraige. As long as all parties are consenting and no abuse is intristic to it, bans are hard to defend in theface of a demand for personal rights. Unforseen consequences may, indeed, follow but are, at this time, not completely quantifiable.
The church, militant in politics, is in a dangerous place. One that could well end in intolerance and persecution of fellow members of its community, as well as those it deems "sinners" and in grave danger of becoming persecuting force rather than one of love toward its fellow man and an inclusive force for good. No one should be persecuted, all should be loved. You may hate the sin, but must be careful and loving toward the one who commits the sin. That can be a difficult road to walk, for some. Many will feel ill will toward us because they do not know Christ, we must not return that ill will, in any way.

I don't understand how people can say, "oh look in Romans it says this so this is what you must believe." A lot of books say a lot of things, why chose Romans over the other hundreds of thousands of books written in history, including around the time of Jesus. I don't base of what I think is right and wrong off of some ancient literature, that makes 0 sense. Base it off of a a understanding of humanity and our ability to feel pain or pleasure, that is at least an honest starting point rather than what ignorant goat herders in the middle east thought thousands of years ago. Physics? You mean biology, don't you? Of course, there isn't much in biology to counter the claims of the author either. So, maybe you did mean physics.

Mabye some thoughts to consider without an ego response

Accept Jesus christ as your lord and saviour. You never know how soon is too late. Transcend the worldly illusion of enslavement.
    The world denounces truth....

Accepting Jesus Christ (for me) resulted in something like seeng a new colour. You will see it .....but will not be able to clearly explain it to anyone else..... Its meant to be that way to transend any selfism within you.

Also... much the world arranges "surrounding dark matter into something to be debated" in such a way that protects/inflates the ego.

The key is be present and transcend our own desire to physically see evidence. We don't know anyways by defending our own perception of dark matter.

Currently.... most of us are constructing our own path that suits our sin lifestyle. Were all sinners. Knowing that we are is often an issue. But both christians and non are sinners.

We don't like to Let go and let god. We want control to some degree. This is what Jesus asks us to do. "Let go and let god".
It's the hardest thing to do... but is done by letting the truth of scripture lead you (redemptive revelation)... as I said .

Try reading corinthians and see if it makes sense to you. Try it without a pre conceived notion of it being a fairy tale.
    See the truth...
do we do what it says in todays society... is it relevant... so many have not recently read and only hinge their philosophy on what they have heard from som other person...which may have been full of arogance pride or vanity..

Look closely at the economy ponzi, look at how society idolizes Lust , greed , envy, sloth, pride of life, desire for knowledge, desire for power, desire for revencge, gluttony with food etc .

    Trancsend the temporal world.

Just think if you can find any truth you can take with you ....in any of these things. When you die your riches go to someone who will spend away your life..... You will be forgotten.... history will repeat iteslf.... the greatest minds knowledge fade or are eventually plagerzed..... your good deeds will be forgotten and only give you a fleeting temporary reward . your learned teachings are forgotten or mutated..... your gold is transfered back to the rullers that rule you through deception. Your grave will grow over . This is truth .

Trancsend your egoism and free yourself from this dominion of satan. Understand you are a sinner and part of the collective problem of this worldly matrix... Repent.... Repent means knowing

Evidence follows faith. Faith does not follow evidence..... Faith above reason in Jesus Christ.

Faith comes by Reading or Hearing the word of god from the bible . Ask Jesus in faith for dicernment and start reading the new testament... You will be shocked when you lay down your preconceived notions and ....see and hear truth ... see how christ sets an example ... feel the truth....

    Read Ecclesiastes. Read corinthians.

You cant trancend your own egoism by adapting a world philosophy to suit your needs. Seek the truth in Christ.

Sell all your cleverness and purchase true bewilderment. You don't get what you want ....you get what you are in christ.

I promise this has been the truth for me. In Jesus christ .

Think of what you really have to lose. ...your ego?

Break the Matrix of illusion that holds your senses captive.

once you do . you too will have the wisdom of God that comes only through the Holy Spirit. Saved By grace through Faith. Just like seeing a new colour.... can't explain it to a transient caught in the matrix of worldly deception.
You will also see how the world suppresses this information and distorts it

Your all smart people . I tell the truth. Its hard to think out of the box when earthly thinking is the box.
I'ts a personal free experience you can do it free anytime . Don't wait till you are about to die.. START PUTTING YOUR TREASURES WHERE THEY REALLY MATTER >
    Its awsome .

CNN has a computer filter system.
Usually you have to have a really dirty mind to figure out what words are bad.
For instance it took me awhile to figure out the book of Ti*tus will keep a post from posting. Gotta put something in the to break up the hidden bad word.
      Same with Doc-u-ment.
Whole bunches of words within words are forbidden.
I usually copy what I am posting before I post. If the post fails I paste it and search again for the supposedly offensive word.
That is why I now spend more time at MSNBC.

Attention R. Albert Mohler Jr – Peter’s vision in Acts 10:15 was not really about clean and unclean foods, but rather should Jews be associating with Gentiles as fellow believers. Please read this in its full context and apply hermeneutics – it was not meant as a literal vision!

    May 22, 2012 at 6:14 pm |
    • Haime52

You nail that one right on the head. People often forget that the vision is only part of the whole story. Never did Peter "kill and eat". At the end he "percieved that he should call no man common or unclean". Never he say say anything about food, that was just an analog to gentiles.

"Thank you, Mr. Mohler. Good article."

How can something be good when it's spreading hatred and bigotry towards this minority group when the experts have shown that being gay is not a choice, it's not a mental illness and it can't be voluntarily changed. Oh...that's right your prejudice too.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the American School Counselor Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the National Association of SocialWorkers, together representing more than 480,000 mental health professionals, have all taken the position that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and thus is not something that needs to or can be “cured."

      May 22, 2012 at 6:18 pm |
    • michael

      In other words...

Me think good article because me hate gay people too. Sugar coating me hate and me bigotry and making me feel as if me not going against every Word of Christ makes me feel good.

      May 22, 2012 at 6:29 pm |
    • I think therefore I am

      Yeah,
Where did you see hatred? Why is it that just because someone disagrees with someone that they say, "You hate me?" He simply stated his position on an issue. If you take a stand against murder, does that mean you "hate" the murderer or the act of murder? If you hate lies, do you hate the liar or just the act of lying?

      May 22, 2012 at 6:31 pm |
    • JOregon

Actually it really wasn't a good article.
While he covered such (alleged) hypocrisies such as eating shell fish, he failed to mention the SBC's REAL Hypocrisy of Claiming they can bless adultery while condemning Home O Sax U ality. (CNN keeps us creative)
The SBC will marry someone in their church that has divorced their spouse.
Mark 10:11 And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her.
Mark 10:12 And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.
There is really nothing good about half truths and hypocrisy.

      May 22, 2012 at 6:31 pm |

When you start comparing murder to being gay then it should clue you in your argument is a complete failure.

@ BET Just because someone is attracted to the same s6x does not mean they have to act on those feelings or thoughts. It is a choice to have s6x or not. A person is born a vir-gin nothing more nothing less!

But by the same token it's psychologically unhealthy to repress your se xual desires

      May 22, 2012 at 5:53 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

Why should someone who's gay be denied the same thing you have? If you were told you could never have s3x with the person you love and are attracted to, would you obey? Particularly if you were told you would have to remain celibate your entire life because you couldn't marry?

NO, you wouldn't. If you say otherwise, you're a liar.

      May 22, 2012 at 5:54 pm |
    • Surthurfurd

Just because we are afraid of those who are different does not mean we have to act on those fears and treat those people as inferior.

    • YeahRight

"Just because someone is attracted to the same s6x does not mean they have to act on those feelings or thoughts."

It's hysterical to read these types of disgusting comments and only proves the anti gay people are clueless about love and having an intimate long term respectful loving relationship. If you looked at your spouse, boyfriend, girlfriend, or fiancé and said that you were just going to stop loving him or her at this exact moment, how successful do you think you would be? To think that is a requirement for gay people when the experts have shown them to be totally normal people is just WRONG!

Heterosexual behavior and homosexual behavior are normal aspects of human sexuality. Both have been documented in many different cultures and historical eras. Despite the persistence of stereotypes that portray lesbian, gay, and bisexual people as disturbed, several decades of research and clinical experience have led all mainstream medical and mental health organizations in this country to conclude that these orientations represent normal forms of human experience.

Well said. Also...Just because a man is attracted to his sister or a child, it doesn't mean he has to act on those feelings.

Tell you what, I will follow the current translation of the bible if everyone else does. No s3x outside of marriage, you can only get married once, women must obey men and slavery must he reinstated. Oh yeah, no crab, lobster, shrimp, pork, bacon, cotton blends, tattoos, women can't wear slacks, men can't shave and any kid who curses their parents must be stoned to death.
