Video of North Carolina pastor's plan to 'get rid of' gays goes viral

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Video of a North Carolina pastor preaching that gays and lesbians should be rounded up inside an electric fence is going viral on the Internet, two weeks after North Carolina passed a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage and President Barack Obama voiced personal support for legalizing such marriages.

"I figured a way out, a way to get rid of all the lesbians and queers, but I couldn't get it past the Congress," Pastor Charles L. Worley can be seen telling his Providence Road Baptist Church congregation in the video, which had more than 250,000 YouTube views by Tuesday.

"Build a great big, large fence - 50 or a 100 miles long - and put all the lesbians in there,” Worley went on to say in his May 13 sermon at his Maiden, North Carolina, church. “Fly over and drop some food. Do the same thing with the queers and the homosexuals, and have that fence electrified so they can't get out. Feed them. And you know in a few years, they'll die out. You know why? They can't reproduce."

My Take: The Bible condemns a lot, but here's why we focus on homosexuality

The video had initially been posted on Providence Road’s website but was recently taken down, according to CNN affiliate WBTV-TV in Charlotte.

The phone line at Worley’s church was busy on Monday night and on Tuesday, as was Worley’s home number on Tuesday.

The church’s website was down Tuesday morning, but it had described the house of worship as fundamentalist, meaning it represents a Baptist tradition that's more conservative than the Southern Baptists.

My Take: The Christian case for gay marriage

Worley’s sermon was posted on YouTube by a group called Catawba Valley Citizens Against Hate, which is organizing a protest at the Providence Road Baptist Church on Sunday.

Addressing his congregation last Sunday, Worley referred to his earlier controversial sermon.

"I talked a little bit, I believe it was last Sunday, on the homosexual lifestyle, and there was a whole lot of people who didn't like what I said," Worley told his congregation Sunday, according to WBTV. "I want to read it out of the Bible, and then we'll go from there."

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

“Listen, all of the Sodomites, the lesbians, and all of the ... what's that word? Gays - I didn't wanna say 'queers' - that say we don't love you, I love you more than you love yourself,” Worley said, according to WBTV. “I'm praying for you to be saved."

Worley’s initial sermon was partly framed as a response to Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage, which he made in a TV interview a day after North Carolina voters passed a state constitutional amendment banning legal recognition of such marriages and other types of gay unions.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, was working Tuesday to gather criticism of Worley’s comments from other North Carolina pastors.

“I am angry and sick at heart over Pastor Worley's comments,” said the Rev. Dennis Teall-Fleming, pastor at Open Hearts Gathering in Gastonia, North Carolina, in a statement distributed by GLAAD.

“Nothing he says has anything to do with the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Teall-Fleming, who leads a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregation. “I call on all Christian and Baptist organizations that have any connection with him to condemn his comments as strongly as I do, including Providence Road Baptist Church of Maiden.”

We won't die off, straight parents will still produce gay children.
Do I have to pay taxes when I'm in this fence?
I'm sure people would be braking in instead of breaking out...

I live in this town, Maiden, a rural town of about 3,000. One of my family members is gay. Living here, I fear for his safety. I think we are seeing another local Hitler in the making. Pastor Worley, you are an evil and dangerous man and you don't belong teaching the Bible. You sound more like the KKK than a man of God. SHAME ON YOU. And shame on all of you who sat there saying AMEN to such hateful talk. I think it's time to move.

"1. You honestly believe, despite everything we have been taught....that the World began about 6,000 years ago with one man, one woman and a magic talking snake."

    ~No. You got that wrong.

"2. You think that,...the Second Coming is imminent.

~No...you got that incorrect as well.

"3. You accept the “leap of faith” as a valid basis for believing in god in the absence of evidence,"

~No..in that you mean scientific evidence but ignoring personal experience. Oddly enough the whole "leap of faith" aspect happens in much of our human existence but I have my doubts you would condemn the use of it always.

"4. You consider simple thoughts like lust and mast.urbation a sin, but have no issue with the disgusting, degenerate way your Bible treats women and $ex and, even today, admire people like Michele Bachmann who consider women second class citizens to men."

~Lol....no. I do not care for Bachmann and I know a lot of Christians that do not. As for your opinion on the $ex and how women are treated...that is a pretty va_gue and unrefined comment. Sorry but it is.

"5. You likely deny global warming for no other reason than it makes you uncomfortable and hold science..."

~At least you used "likely" with this instead of foolishly implying an absolute. I've known many Christians that really respects and trust science. Heck, much of our knowledge and science came from those within the church throughout time.

"6. You will regularly be ripped off and cheated by charismatic “preachers” who are obviously crooks to everybody but you."

    ~Lol...another false absolute.

"7. You spout off about the importance of charity and generosity as Biblical principles, but likely support movements like the tea party that promote the evisceration of social policies."

~Just a personal political rant that has no basis in reality. There are Christians that give to charity and are very generous that don't have anything to do with the Tea Party. It may seem odd but not all Christians are regulated to the United States and therefor would have absolutely nothing to do with a minor political ent_ity as the Tea Party.

"8. You fail to see that, given your personality, the only reason you are not a fundamentalist Jew, Hindu or Muslim is an accident of where you were born. Had you been born in Iran, you would be one of those bearded half-wits that burns American flags."

~Total guesswork without true evidence. Ignores the fact that people from different backgrounds and cultures can change their religious preferences. If this was untrue, then how could any new religion recruit new followers to begin with? Wouldn't they be stuck and trapped in the mindset of their parents?

"9. You will defend the Bible, an Iron Age collection of Middle Eastern mythology, despite it being indisputably wrong and literally infested with outdated morality, contradictions and barbaric cruelty."

~Defend it how? Pretty va_gue. At least you got the time frame down this time with the Iron Age, though I still do not see how being in the 21st century makes a peron's moral outlooks superior to one from the Iron Age.

"10. You believe that anybody who does not accept your silly faith will burn in hell."

~No...I believe that God will decide no matter what I believe.

@DPGW- Exactly how does it defend the faith by defending this guy?

You are not a Christian (I guess) and are a jerk. Does that mean every non-Christian is a jerk? Of course not. So just because this guy is a Christian and saying something silly doesn't mean that all Christians have to agree.

@DPGW- "But see, here's my problem. This guy IS a leader of your church and belief system. If you do't believe in him, then who do you believe in?"

I believe in God. I do the work...the reading, the study. I search out MY faith and do not require this guy or any pastor, preacher or priest to tell me how I should believe.

Based on my experience, I simply don't remember meeting someone that deemed themselves to be a good religious person; that didn't also use that religion to discriminate and poor verbal hate on others.

If you have no empathy, forgiveness or love for your fellow citizens then you have no religion.

If your experience differs from mine and you know many people that are both religious and truly behave like Jesus would, then God Bless you. You are the lucky.

I do know many GOOD Christians – they believe that taking care of those less fortunate, loving others and serving as examples of love and acceptance is their job as Christians. However, because of these beliefs, they are not the ones screaming "look at me, I'm Christian".

Why do people care so much what this guy says? Every single person critisizing him on this board at one time has said something they should not have said and may regret, he just happened to be filmed. Also, I find it funny that so many people hate someone because of what they perceive to be hate.

Perceived hate? How is it only perceived hate and not actual hate? How about we let free people actually be free to do what they please. Whether it is being gay, or being baptist, or any other possible way we can segregate people. Let's stop categorizing people, because that's the only thing that continues to cause problems. We are all humans, let's just leave it at that.

"Every single person critisizing him on this board at one time has said something they should not have said and may regret, he just happened to be filmed"

And just how many of us who have said things we regret do it on a platform in front of a crowd of people who we were attempting to influence?

The BIG difference is that the rest of us don't exhort our "followers" to hatred in the name of our God. This man holds a position of "authority" over the people in his congregation. It's one thing for the rest of us to rant, it's quite another for a man, claiming authority from God, to spout his hatred from the pulpit.

Hahahaha 'perceived of'? What did you not read, the part about gathering them up and putting them behind electrified fences til they died? Was Hitler and his Nazi regime 'misunderstood'? Because that is what this guy is, Hitler.

No one will like your comment because it condemns them as well. This is entirely in line with the teaching of Christ. This preacher is way out of line. And you know what? We all are. Every. Single. One. Of. Us. No one is without sin (1 John). If we break one law we break them all (James). Man cannot save himself, only God can (Mark 10:27).

What this guy said was hateful, ignorant, AND awful. His theology is wacky. But no one is without sin. I'm not defending him, but we need to recognize our own sin (Luke 6:42).

It matters because of the venue where he is speaking. It is in a church- the place people are supposed to share God's love, learn about how to care for others, and develop the Christian belief......Which is NOT what he is saying. It is shameful, not how God or Christ feels, and embarrasses me as one who grew up in NC and loves my home state. I do believe he speaks only for himself and it is where and to whom that makes this so bad.

Worley has no power on his own...he only has the power he has been given by his "followers." As venemous as he is, he isn't likely to ever change...the focus should be on his followers. How can they sit there while he's spewing his hatred and ignorance? Is there no limit to their willingness to support him? I'd like to attend one of his sermons just so that I could walk out...maybe others would wake up and follow.

I wonder of the members of the "church" are the members of his family. I say the people in that area should all join the "church" AND BECOME THE MAJORITY AND VOTE THE NUT OUT

Do you speak for all atheists? Do you speak for anyone but yourself? Why should I have to defend every so called "Christian"?

      Fail.

Why do you seem to believe that every crackpot preacher that espouses hate represents peace loving Christians. This says something about your own intolerance, igorance and need to control. I don't desire that at all. You got to really laugh at the ones who post with the all inclusive "You". Grow up invisible media blogger bot.

This guy is a terrible spokesperson! As a Christian, we need to love EVERYONE, no matter who they are. Don't cut others down, call them sinners, say they're headed to hell, or judge them. That's hypocritical. God is the Judge! Instead of pushing people away, love them like our Savior does!
