Video of North Carolina pastor's plan to 'get rid of' gays goes viral

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Video of a North Carolina pastor preaching that gays and lesbians should be rounded up inside an electric fence is going viral on the Internet, two weeks after North Carolina passed a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage and President Barack Obama voiced personal support for legalizing such marriages.

"I figured a way out, a way to get rid of all the lesbians and queers, but I couldn't get it past the Congress," Pastor Charles L. Worley can be seen telling his Providence Road Baptist Church congregation in the video, which had more than 250,000 YouTube views by Tuesday.

"Build a great big, large fence - 50 or a 100 miles long - and put all the lesbians in there,” Worley went on to say in his May 13 sermon at his Maiden, North Carolina, church. “Fly over and drop some food. Do the same thing with the queers and the homosexuals, and have that fence electrified so they can't get out. Feed them. And you know in a few years, they'll die out. You know why? They can't reproduce."

My Take: The Bible condemns a lot, but here's why we focus on homosexuality

The video had initially been posted on Providence Road’s website but was recently taken down, according to CNN affiliate WBTV-TV in Charlotte.

The phone line at Worley’s church was busy on Monday night and on Tuesday, as was Worley’s home number on Tuesday.

The church’s website was down Tuesday morning, but it had described the house of worship as fundamentalist, meaning it represents a Baptist tradition that's more conservative than the Southern Baptists.

My Take: The Christian case for gay marriage

Worley’s sermon was posted on YouTube by a group called Catawba Valley Citizens Against Hate, which is organizing a protest at the Providence Road Baptist Church on Sunday.

Addressing his congregation last Sunday, Worley referred to his earlier controversial sermon.

"I talked a little bit, I believe it was last Sunday, on the homosexual lifestyle, and there was a whole lot of people who didn't like what I said," Worley told his congregation Sunday, according to WBTV. "I want to read it out of the Bible, and then we'll go from there."

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

“Listen, all of the Sodomites, the lesbians, and all of the ... what's that word? Gays - I didn't wanna say 'queers' - that say we don't love you, I love you more than you love yourself,” Worley said, according to WBTV. “I'm praying for you to be saved."

Worley’s initial sermon was partly framed as a response to Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage, which he made in a TV interview a day after North Carolina voters passed a state constitutional amendment banning legal recognition of such marriages and other types of gay unions.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, was working Tuesday to gather criticism of Worley’s comments from other North Carolina pastors.

“I am angry and sick at heart over Pastor Worley's comments,” said the Rev. Dennis Teall-Fleming, pastor at Open Hearts Gathering in Gastonia, North Carolina, in a statement distributed by GLAAD.

“Nothing he says has anything to do with the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Teall-Fleming, who leads a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregation. “I call on all Christian and Baptist organizations that have any connection with him to condemn his comments as strongly as I do, including Providence Road Baptist Church of Maiden.”

haha gotta love religious people. They preach love....as long as it's hetero love.

Gargle, don't confuse religious people with fundamentalists. There are many decent religious folks out there in every faith, but very few decent fundamentalists under any faith!

So, by proposing what he did with the concentration camp and all, by saying that after they all die off the world would be rid of them, I believe he is admitting that orientation is biologically determined, not a lifestyle choice as many of this ilk try to say. So...if it's their biology, as I believe he pretty much said, then God made them that way.

And his comments that "they would all die off, because they can't reproduce". Last time I checked, heteros make baby gay people... not gay people make baby gay people. His sermon makes zero sense!

Ah yes, preach about placing the oppressed in Concentration Camps and letting them die. First the gays, then maybe the Muslims? Maybe the Asians next.... hatred masked as "religeous preaching" has been going on for centuries. This is why we murder one another...

    Sin
Do you all realize that the greatest of all sins is to deny God? To vehemently deny His existence? To speak the way you all do about Him? I am so sad that out of the 3600 posts here, there is nothing but the same hate this pastor preached. Our society is dead and doomed.

    May 22, 2012 at 8:46 pm |
    • AtheistSteve

Sin doesn't exist. Neither does your God. Your entire premise is based on falsehood. Why should any rational person believe anything you or others like you say?

      May 22, 2012 at 8:49 pm |
    • Edwardo

Why would a god be offended by someone not believing they exist? Why would not believing something be such a horrible crime? There are lots of things I believe or don't believe.

      May 22, 2012 at 8:52 pm |
    • Sin

What you just said is sin. Please don't believe me! You must read the word of God! I am not God and only repeat what the Bible says.

    • Epica

Prove it then. If your god exists prove it and not with crackpot theories and old books. I want scientific fact. Put up or shut up. If you can't prove it, it doesn't exist until proven otherwise. Apply some scientific theory to the issue.

The Bible is no different that a volume of Dr. Suess tales. It's a collection of fiction. I have read it.

      May 22, 2012 at 9:01 pm |
    • Edwardo

@Epica – the difference between him and us is... if he proved god existed, we would believe it. If we proved god doesn't exist, he would still think he does.

      May 22, 2012 at 9:02 pm |
    • Sin

You want me to prove it? Who am I? I will pray for God to prove it to you. I can tell you that the proof is all around you. The accounts in the Bible are proven by many with way more brain power than me. Google it if you want answers they are so numerous. But one thing you also miss is that we walk by faith. Faith in something we cannot touch or see or feel. God wants us to live by faith.

      May 22, 2012 at 9:02 pm |
    • Pete

Epic, you'll get all the proof you need after the last moment of your life. But then it will be too late...what a shame! But at least you will have lived your earthly life convinced of how smart you are, so maybe you can hang your hat on that.

      May 22, 2012 at 9:03 pm |
    • Epica

Aww thanks guys! You are the best. I just gotta wonder...what are you going to do when you go for the big sleep. You know...when you lay down for the last time and nothing happens. Use your logic. I know it is scary believe me I wish there was an after life it would be some small comfort but unfortunately it just doesn't make any sense. What makes more sense is that one day you will just put your head down and go to sleep forever. Nothing after that, no more thinking, no more feeling. Just gone. If you can prove me wrong I would love it believe me but I know you can't.

      May 22, 2012 at 9:06 pm |
    • Sin

      Epica,

I see no reason to argue your point. God is real. When I lay my head down for the last time, I will have everlasting communion with Jesus. Whose communion will you have? Oh right, just dirt...I get it. I hope you change your mind Before you take that last breath because I want to communion with you in heaven and we can all worship our Father forever. How glorious!

      May 22, 2012 at 9:12 pm |
    • Epica

Religion was created to explain the unknown that is death. Humans fear the unknown and they needed to create a way to deal with it. It is still around because people can't and don't want to deal with it. Just start thinking about dying and no longer thinking. In a moment you go from thinking and feeling to just gone. You will never think again and never be again. It makes sense people want an answer to what happens afterward. Unfortunately the answer is nothing, we just blink in and out of the cosmos. I hope for you, your god is real if it brings you comfort.

      @Sin

You said, "Do you all realize that the greatest of all sins is to deny God?"
Earth to Sin: Wake the fuck up. Your imaginary friend doesn't exist anywhere outside of your own feeble mind. He/she/it isn't any more likely to exist than the Tooth fairy.

You said, "I am so sad that out of the 3600 posts here, there is nothing but the same hate this pastor preached."
No hate for your non-existing god. I don't know a single atheist that hates any god. It's kinda hard to hate something that doesn't exist, you know.

In thousands of years this god of yours hasn't provided a single shred of credible evidence of it's existence, yet it will torment those that don't believe in it for eternity. People that use their intelligence and skepticism and have honest doubts, will be condemned to spend eternity in hell.

Even if there is a creature like your god, he/she/it is one of the worst monsters ever to roam the universe. Your god isn't good by any stretch of the imagination. It is the vilest creature imaginable. That creature is so vile that it puts all earthly monsters to shame. Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot and all murderous dictators are made to look like sissies compared to that monster. Anyone that worships it should have his/her head examined.

You said, "Our society is dead and doomed."
No it isn't. As long as we can get people educated, they'll eventually let go of those silly beliefs. Once they do, we can make some progress.

Unfortunately most Christians are like this ignorant, hate-filled, lunatic pastor, so most of the world is not Christian.

I think by God allowing gay people to exist, he is not testing the gay people. He is testing the rest of us whether we will treat them with love and compassion. There is nothing wrong with trying to teach our beliefs with long-suffering and humility, with meekness and unfeigned love. But the first attempt to force or coerce someone and God's spirit automatically withdraws from the situation.

    May 22, 2012 at 8:42 pm |
    • Edwardo

God is testing you? Why would an all-knowing being need to test something? The only reason why you would test something, is to find out an answer. Doesn't he already know everything?

      May 22, 2012 at 8:45 pm |

Yes, He already knows. But WE have to find out something about ourselves.

So god made "vile gays", to test your superiority to them? He wants to see how you'll react to their "vileness", and if you're real nice, you'll go to heaven. Of course, the "vile gays" will parish because... well, they're inferior, and you're superior.

      May 22, 2012 at 8:54 pm |
    • Snow

why test? coz he's bored! can you imagine how much work he has? He worked for like six days 14.7 billion years ago (oops, or 6000 yrs ago).. and then sits back sipping colada for ever and ever..

besides, can you imagine the inefficiency of those 6 days work? a universe that is millions of light years in diameter, but with one puny little rock that can support life .. made in his own image!!.. wow!

    • Surviving the World

Protected how? He's allowed to say it, no one stopped him and as far as we all know he hasn't been arrested, or any other legal action has been taken against him. So how has his speech not been protected? Because people are calling him out on his hate and using their own freedom of speech to condemn his? We're at perfect liberty to say whatever we want about this guy.

      May 22, 2012 at 8:41 pm |

Okay, on the one hand, God's love is unconditional. On the other hand, He has laid down the law on some things (not everything goes–no free for all). So what does a parent do who loves their child unconditionally, yet sees their child doing something that is so self-destructive? Intervene? Or let it go and watch them hurt themselves? When I was four years old, my mom told me not to touch the red-hot burners on her stove. Why? Because she was hate-mongering and wanted to deny me my freedom? Or could it have been because she loved me and knew better what was best for me?

    May 22, 2012 at 8:29 pm |
    • Jebadiah

The problem arises when you or anyone else pretends to speak for God or know the mind of God. When God stops making gay people, perhaps he'll give you the right to hate them. But then their will be no point right?

      May 22, 2012 at 8:32 pm |

I would would be much more scared to be this pastor than I am being a gay man. Preaching "god's word" can be a dangerous thing. . .especially if you're as dumb as this pastor is. Hiring several body guards would be the smart thing for him to do. The angry mob that is planning on meeting in front of this pastor's church this coming Sunday might not be as peaceful as they are hoping.

Actually – the bible says this about marriage:
      Check out this bible verse:

An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord's affairs—how he can please the Lord. But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can please his wife— and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord's affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how she can please her husband. I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord.
