Video of North Carolina pastor's plan to 'get rid of' gays goes viral

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Video of a North Carolina pastor preaching that gays and lesbians should be rounded up inside an electric fence is going viral on the Internet, two weeks after North Carolina passed a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage and President Barack Obama voiced personal support for legalizing such marriages.

"I figured a way out, a way to get rid of all the lesbians and queers, but I couldn't get it past the Congress," Pastor Charles L. Worley can be seen telling his Providence Road Baptist Church congregation in the video, which had more than 250,000 YouTube views by Tuesday.

"Build a great big, large fence - 50 or a 100 miles long - and put all the lesbians in there,” Worley went on to say in his May 13 sermon at his Maiden, North Carolina, church. “Fly over and drop some food. Do the same thing with the queers and the homosexuals, and have that fence electrified so they can't get out. Feed them. And you know in a few years, they'll die out. You know why? They can't reproduce."

My Take: The Bible condemns a lot, but here's why we focus on homosexuality

The video had initially been posted on Providence Road’s website but was recently taken down, according to CNN affiliate WBTV-TV in Charlotte.

The phone line at Worley’s church was busy on Monday night and on Tuesday, as was Worley’s home number on Tuesday.

The church’s website was down Tuesday morning, but it had described the house of worship as fundamentalist, meaning it represents a Baptist tradition that's more conservative than the Southern Baptists.

My Take: The Christian case for gay marriage

Worley’s sermon was posted on YouTube by a group called Catawba Valley Citizens Against Hate, which is organizing a protest at the Providence Road Baptist Church on Sunday.

Addressing his congregation last Sunday, Worley referred to his earlier controversial sermon.

"I talked a little bit, I believe it was last Sunday, on the homosexual lifestyle, and there was a whole lot of people who didn't like what I said," Worley told his congregation Sunday, according to WBTV. "I want to read it out of the Bible, and then we'll go from there."

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

“Listen, all of the Sodomites, the lesbians, and all of the ... what's that word? Gays - I didn't wanna say 'queers' - that say we don't love you, I love you more than you love yourself,” Worley said, according to WBTV. “I'm praying for you to be saved."

Worley’s initial sermon was partly framed as a response to Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage, which he made in a TV interview a day after North Carolina voters passed a state constitutional amendment banning legal recognition of such marriages and other types of gay unions.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, was working Tuesday to gather criticism of Worley’s comments from other North Carolina pastors.

“I am angry and sick at heart over Pastor Worley's comments,” said the Rev. Dennis Teall-Fleming, pastor at Open Hearts Gathering in Gastonia, North Carolina, in a statement distributed by GLAAD.

“Nothing he says has anything to do with the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Teall-Fleming, who leads a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregation. “I call on all Christian and Baptist organizations that have any connection with him to condemn his comments as strongly as I do, including Providence Road Baptist Church of Maiden.”

" ...and there was a whole lot of people who didn't like what I said..."

The fact that this guy can't speak English properly tells you a lot about how ignorant he is.

All of the people who go to that church speak the same way. They interviewed some of them today and showed it on CNN earlier. They all support this cult leader and the rest of the town people say that this church is known for being very hateful and intolerant to an extreme.

I do agree. This is no "charity". Time to bring these churches to modern-times.

I don't know what all the fuss is. The Bible prescribes the death penalty for sodomy, both in the Old Testament (Leviticus 20:13) and the New Testament (Romans 1:32).

      Ben,

Leviticus also says (Lev. 20:9) "If there is anyone who curses his father or his mother, he shall surely be put to death”.

So what was your point, if any?

      May 22, 2012 at 10:38 pm |
    • Dolores

Bible also says you can take disobedient children to the city gates and stone them, but we don't hold to that anymore. Better go back and reread the Romans passage, because you are taking it out of context.

      May 22, 2012 at 10:41 pm |
    • Casey

      Ben – You quoted Leviticus as condemning h o m o s e x u a l i t y because the Scripture says, "Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind; it is an abomination." As a gay man, I do not have s e x with women, I have s e x with men. Thus, I do not lie with mankind as with womankind. This Scripture was not intended to condemn h o m o s e x u a l i t y.

By the way, Leviticus also forbids wearing clothes made of two fabrics and says we should stone children who disrespect their parents. You had better check your closet and supply of stones.

    • Ben

Let's examine Romans 1:32. They which commit such things are WORTHY OF DEATH, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. The ones who do it and the ones who have pleasure in them that do it. Doesn't sound like God loves everyone to me.

      May 22, 2012 at 10:46 pm |

What a bunch of ridiculous arguments – you are actually saying that because God righteously requires the death penalty for children who curse their parents, therefore sodomy is OK? Yikes. Why don't you make the same ridiculous argument for murder? Or bestiality?

      Ben,

Speaking of being ridiculous, are you actually going to claim that people should follow Leviticus because EVERYTHING in there is true and YOU believe it?

      Get serious.

      May 22, 2012 at 10:49 pm |
    • Dorothy

Oh my Ben, you poor thing, you really don't get it do you? People are explaining to you that your are misinterpreting scripture and explaining that if you do not study scripture and just take things at their superficial face value you are probably going to draw an erroneous conclusion. It is called "fundamentalism".......and was actually one of the early heresies of the Church which has unfortunately reared its ugly head again as a misinformed, misdirected religion. This poor pastor is prime evidence of the unfortunate result of this type of heresy.

      May 22, 2012 at 10:51 pm |
    • DeeCee1000

Dorothy, "early" heresies? I guess that explains the countless people who were killed during the 600yr Inquistions. . .this type of thinking by church leaders has been around for hundreds of years. Anyone who said anything contrary to what the bible or church leaders said was considered an "enemy" of "god" and tortured then killed.

      May 22, 2012 at 10:57 pm |
    • Dorothy

Believe it or not DeeCee, it was actually a heresy that predated the inquisition. It was actually during a time when the christians were on the receiving end of the persecutions. That having been said, you are correct that the church itself has fallen into this same heresy many times throughout history.......including in the present day (case in point....this preacher).

What the religious right fight for in court: (1) Protection of their pastors for illicit se x ual conduct (2) Protecting church assets from lawsuits and taxes (3) Control over women's reproductive rights.

What gays fight for in court: (1) Marriage – to live in legally recognized monogamous relationships (2) Family – to raise their children in nurturing, loving homes as a couple. (3) Service to country in the Military.

Seems pretty obvious which one of these "agendas" God would smile upon.

having been raised in the christian faith, this isn't it. I was taught that God and Jesus loved all people, no exceptions. His love is unconditional. I am truly sorry that someone like this, can use Christianity to further their own agenda. It's also why I am a huge believer in the separation of church and state. If I truly thought god was like this, I would become an atheist.

Apparently god, who IS Jesus, sent himself to die in precisely that way... so the jews were doing the work of god. Shouldn't they be celebrated for killing Jesus, since it was god's plan to begin with?
