Video of North Carolina pastor's plan to 'get rid of' gays goes viral

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Video of a North Carolina pastor preaching that gays and lesbians should be rounded up inside an electric fence is going viral on the Internet, two weeks after North Carolina passed a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage and President Barack Obama voiced personal support for legalizing such marriages.

"I figured a way out, a way to get rid of all the lesbians and queers, but I couldn't get it past the Congress," Pastor Charles L. Worley can be seen telling his Providence Road Baptist Church congregation in the video, which had more than 250,000 YouTube views by Tuesday.

"Build a great big, large fence - 50 or a 100 miles long - and put all the lesbians in there,” Worley went on to say in his May 13 sermon at his Maiden, North Carolina, church. “Fly over and drop some food. Do the same thing with the queers and the homosexuals, and have that fence electrified so they can't get out. Feed them. And you know in a few years, they'll die out. You know why? They can't reproduce."

My Take: The Bible condemns a lot, but here's why we focus on homosexuality

The video had initially been posted on Providence Road’s website but was recently taken down, according to CNN affiliate WBTV-TV in Charlotte.

The phone line at Worley’s church was busy on Monday night and on Tuesday, as was Worley’s home number on Tuesday.

The church’s website was down Tuesday morning, but it had described the house of worship as fundamentalist, meaning it represents a Baptist tradition that's more conservative than the Southern Baptists.

My Take: The Christian case for gay marriage

Worley’s sermon was posted on YouTube by a group called Catawba Valley Citizens Against Hate, which is organizing a protest at the Providence Road Baptist Church on Sunday.

Addressing his congregation last Sunday, Worley referred to his earlier controversial sermon.

"I talked a little bit, I believe it was last Sunday, on the homosexual lifestyle, and there was a whole lot of people who didn't like what I said," Worley told his congregation Sunday, according to WBTV. "I want to read it out of the Bible, and then we'll go from there."

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

“Listen, all of the Sodomites, the lesbians, and all of the ... what's that word? Gays - I didn't wanna say 'queers' - that say we don't love you, I love you more than you love yourself,” Worley said, according to WBTV. “I'm praying for you to be saved."

Worley’s initial sermon was partly framed as a response to Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage, which he made in a TV interview a day after North Carolina voters passed a state constitutional amendment banning legal recognition of such marriages and other types of gay unions.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, was working Tuesday to gather criticism of Worley’s comments from other North Carolina pastors.

“I am angry and sick at heart over Pastor Worley's comments,” said the Rev. Dennis Teall-Fleming, pastor at Open Hearts Gathering in Gastonia, North Carolina, in a statement distributed by GLAAD.

“Nothing he says has anything to do with the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Teall-Fleming, who leads a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregation. “I call on all Christian and Baptist organizations that have any connection with him to condemn his comments as strongly as I do, including Providence Road Baptist Church of Maiden.”

As I listened to the reporting on AC 360 regarding Pastor Worley’s message I agree that his words and his way of communicating his theological stand were unwise and archaic. He is being true to his convictions but his words and his way does not resonate with all people who adhere and follow the christian faith. I appreciate the fact that you had Rev. Barry Lynn on and his approach was fair.
The concern I have is that I feel Anderson Cooper pursues people and groups who oppose the gay rights movement more often than any other cause in his show. Anderson is a very fair journalist in “Keeping Them Honest” and is excellent in his presentation but this seems to be a soap box for him. As a Canadian I feel that America is missing the boat on what your real issues are. The debt that has been incurred is alarming. Think about the fact that your candidates have spent millions of dollars for the right to run against President Barack Obama. Now for the actual election millions more will be spent by both sides. Why don’t you adjust your political system and streamline it to run like Britain or Canada do. Yes they are Parliamentary systems but when they call an election they spend much less and the election is over within 30 to 60 days of it being called. That is a huge issue in my books, much bigger than a pastor who leads a congregation of a church that seats 1200 people....really. Very few people would have heard his lack of wisdom but you in your zealous desire to keep them honest actually gave him a voice. I often listen and watch talk show host/comedian Bill Maher who consistently offers up highly offensive anecdotes against religious groups, especially Bible believing christians. CNN and AC 360 never call him on the carpet for his numerous diatribes that criticize the christian position on virtually everything. His audience is much larger and he is just one that I am mentioning. Please pursue and highlight your real issues. Freedom is what achieved your greatness....don’t blow it because you disagree.

i argee we are all worrying about this guy when we should be worrying abou jobs and things like that instead of a pastor that just said how he feels and preaching about the bible

CNN has called out Bill Maher on several occasions for statements he's made. The difference is that Bill is a comedian and his opinion on religious matters never discriminates against minority groups. Bill attacks fundiots when they stick their feet in their mouth but leaves moderate Christians alone...heck he often has them on as guests. Does he blaspheme? Certainly but that is expected of one who feels all faith based beliefs are supersti.tious nonsense. Are believers offended by him? Probably but that just reflects the insecurity of those who can't stand having their views challenged or that opposing views should even exist. Do I care what the faithful believe? Not a bit...that is until they try to impose their beliefs on others and especially when those beliefs restrict the rights and privileges of minority groups. Bill isn't preaching at a pulpit telling other people how they should live and behave. He isn't an authority figure and that's a HUGE difference. He's just one guy with an opinion...one I happen to agree with and that's why I find him so funny.

I agree that there is a lot of grocery cart religious individuals in the world. That was my point earlier about divorce. They pick from the religious shelf the items they want to consume and leave the rest behind. Therefore what does it say about that mind set when you have a faith based book like the Bible? It's whole basis is faith. And when these people choose to only believe segments of the book but not others, it degrades their whole position.

      Max,

God gives to His sons and daughters all the word they need and can use to make them feel secure and if anyone thinks it a grocery shopping well, maybe God and Hs Word, the gospel is for His sans and daughters immediate needs to get them thru difficult times! God and God's Son and King of all mankind's souls will never live us even when the famines come and the hurricanes destroy and tornades wreak havoc and lightening strikes! None of these catastrophies are of Godliness nor of the devil! They are this world's true nature and she (earth) is dying ever so slowly and is drunk with the deviltries' shadows!

What makes all of this hypocritical is that the Bible also considers divorcing your spouse a sin (Matthew 19:6: “So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate.”).

Now according to statistics 51.7% of married couples get divorced. I just wanna ask the bible thumpers where is their outrage toward these divorcees. Should they not be stripped of some of their liberties and rights because of failing to abide by Gods word.

Seems to me many of these people who "cite" the bible, pick and choose parts that support their own prejudices and apply when needed.

According to you it doesn't matter what we think, we must go by the word of the Bible. Are you questioning the Lord's words?

And what about people committing adultery? That too is a major sin the eyes of God...Should they not be punished for not following the word of the Lord. Shouldn't they be forced to wear a scarlet red A on their chest for the rest of their life? Why should they still be rewarded the liberties ands freedoms of the righteous?

      Jessica,

If it takes the Bible/religion for you to find self worth, that is certainly better than allowing yourself to be abused. You may find verses in the Bible that support your argument, but you can also find verses that are very negative and abusive towards women. As an atheist, I feel you should be allowed to live safely and fairly in our society regardless of your gender, race, or se xual orientation. The Bible can be used to argue the contrary.

I don't think I said anything insulting to you. If I did, I apologize. That was not my intention. You deserve to be treated fairly. No one deserves to be abused. You, like the Bible, don't think that gays should be respected and treated fairly. I disagree with you.

I think they should charge him with inciting violence because his followers probably got all giddy inside when he talked about hurting and getting rid of gay people. He's considered a "spiritual authority" by his flock, so he bears some responsibility for what he says. What if a political leader or a teacher had said the same thing ? Would that same speech have brought them no consequences ?

    May 23, 2012 at 3:29 am |
  9. MyselfOfCourse

Umm.... His logic here seems a bit misguided. Wouldn't it make more sense to mandate the sterilization of all the straight people who have gay babies? After all, they're the one's who are actually doing all the reproducing here. Of course, to be logically consistent would mean accepting the idea that being gay is an inherited genetic trait, not a lifestyle choice.

    May 23, 2012 at 3:26 am |
    • Oh Heck

If it were inherited, then that would mean the parents are ghey. So, your "logic" is a little off genius.

i think people need to sit down and read the bible it is in there and we all have a right to preach and say what we will but god is the only judgeing person in the usa and i feel that we all need to look at what we have done instead of trying to bring the pastor of this church down and this pastor has the right to preach on what he believes and what it says in the bible i am going to follow what the bible says and in the bible it says that god says that no man and man should be in the bed togather or should no woman or woman be in the bed togather i went into town and my daughter was with me and ask me why these to woman was kissing each other now how are you to tell a child that is 7 that they are wife and wife that would sound weird

Jessica. The Bible is very clearly against divorce as well. How do you explain to your daughter how divorce is legal in this country and is considered in the Bible to be just as big a sin?

      May 23, 2012 at 3:28 am |
    • Mr.Roger's Gayborhood

Not if you explain that "wife" just means someone who is female and married.
How hard would that be to say to your daughter? She would see it makes sense right away!
I'm betting your daughter is going to be smarter than you in terms of understanding simple things.

Jessica: You have the right to believe whatever you want, but please do yourself and your child a favor and further your education and spend a bit of time outside of North Carolina. You obviously didn't go far in school, or perhaps your school just had very low standards. Many people who believe (and communicate) like you do so as a result of never having been outside the area where they were born and raised. You are missing out on an entire world of interesting people, places and viewpoints. Please, don't raise another generation of close-minded, ignorant xenophobes. @jessica

I know some people on here are "walking on glass" here for you because you have been abused and cheated on so they refrain from "hurting" you more....BUT SORRY WAKE UP TO THE REAL WORLD

The points people are trying to make to you are fact. Your "Bible and God" crap doesn't interest some here in this forum, we are NOT going to pick up the Bible again.

The Bible is full of hypocrisy and flaws that do not work in today's society. The people that say they are following what God says PROMOTE hatred and violence to certain people. You forget women are to be QUIET and not talk and be subservient to their husbands according to you bible AND YOU ARE TO NOT DIVORCE unless the wife has committed adultery. For if she did not commit adultery and you divorce, you will force her to commit adultery with the next man she lays with. This is ALL in YOUR BIBLE.

SO....I don't play the victim card and sorry but I'm not a fan of others that do too. I don't know your situation that landed your ex to hit or beat you and cheat with your best friend but It's obvious that your ex didn't like you much and you should get better friends. BUT IF YOU ARE GOING TO FOLLOW THE BIBLE TEACHINGS, YOU PRACTICE THEM ALL. You don't go cherry-pick what works for you. and forget the things that don't. THAT'S CALLED BEING A HYPOCRITE!

The problem the the pastor preaching his sermon (above video) was spitting out HATE. Hate is hate no matter what context it comes from. It does NOT give the right for that man to say what he wants just because there is freedom of speech. He runs an institution that gets Tax exempted and has a responsibly to not promote HATE. Besides it's just tacky. He looks like an idiot.

Gay Marriage or just being Gay in the USA is not the Bible or it's followers business. You wanna know why? The USA is NOT ran by religious law. Do you know what that means? It means that no matter what your silly book says on the matter, it will NOT dictate what will be legal or not.

If that video above didn't disgust you then your getting beat down and cheated on is the least of your worries. You are not even human to me. The perverted priests are the least of my worries if people like you continue to think that placing someones civil rights above the words of a stupid book is right.

AST, I am glad you took 4 quotes from the Bible consisting of one sentence each from 4 different chapters from 2 different books. Try not to take things out of context. Let me give you one sentence. And it carries it's context within itself. "Judge not, lest ye be judged."

      Mark,

Each verse was dealing on what 4 different Kings did to the sodomites! I should have made this clear! Now that this is cleared up, I shall repost it!

1Kings 14:24 And there were also sodomites in the land: [and] they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.

1Kings 15:12 And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made.

1Kings 22:46 And the remnant of the sodomites, which remained in the days of his father Asa, he took out of the land.

2Kings 23:7 And he brake down the houses of the sodomites, that [were] by the house of the LORD, where the women wove hangings for the grove.

      1 Santa: 24:7
And the Book sayeth, You better watch out , You better not cry, Better not pout, I'm telling you why, For it is foretold that Santa Claus is coming to town

      1 Santa: 26:9
Lo, as the Book sayeth, He's making a list, And checking it twice; Gonna find out Who's naughty and nice, For it is foretold that Santa Claus is coming to town

Repent ye sinners, for Santa Claus is coming to town

      2 Santa, 1:17
And the Prophet sayeth, He sees you when you're sleeping, He knows when you're awake, He knows if you've been bad or good, So be good for goodness sake!

      2 Santa: 2:24
Oh ye sinners! You better watch out! You better not cry! Better not pout! I'm telling you why

Repent, repent! for Santa Claus is coming to town. I tell ye, Santa Claus is coming to town!

The days of now times are ever becoming ripe with the dew of man's honey. The generations of the now days have become like sackcloth filthy and stained with the semen of the bigots and tantalizers and mockers and scoffers of the word of Truths! Death will soon become the righteous revealers of being torn apart and as being trammpled assunder below the highest of walled in Truths! The "Majesteriums" of selfish professors being the proclaimed "holy see" will not stand too much longer and they will be plundered by the mobs' amassings! Be though as a peaceful allotments' generation and stand upright in times of trouble and calamities and mayhems! When the time comes when you are found out take heeds to what you say as there will be among lot's "perversionists" many ill deceivers of unrighteousness! They will want to taunt you out and do their will to your body's sakes! Mark well for the time of atrocities will soon be upon the homeland of the free! Be tis a direness calling to those who know and do make ready their escape! Find you safe harborages yet in the meawhile ever stand watch as to the world's moanings will be seen by all!

Thank you for the random meaningless verses from your bible. As we are not a theocracy, your inane drivel is worthless. However, in the spirit of fairness, here are some random verses from the Primewonk bible – I happen to think my random verses make a hell of a lot more sense than yours –

Einstein 16:24 Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.

Gould 1:15-16 Human consciousness arose but a minute before midnight on the geological clock. Yet we mayflies try to bend an ancient world to our purposes, ignorant perhaps of the messages buried in its long history. Let us hope that we are still in the early morning of our April day.

Bohr 2:11 Anyone who is not shocked by quantum theory has not understood it.

Szilard 88:16 I'm all in favor of the democratic principle that one idiot is as good as one genius, but I draw the line when someone takes the next step and concludes that two idiots are better than one genius.

Sagan 22:1 For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reàssuring.

Feynman 110:55 …it doesn't matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn't matter how smart you are - if it doesn't agree with experiment, it's wrong.

Hawking 41:61 A machine that was powerful enough to accelerate particles to the grand unification energy would have to be as big as the Solar System-and would be unlikely to be funded in the present economic climate.

Hippocrates 14:5 Science is the father of knowledge, but opinion breeds ignorance.

Galileo 12:16 It is surely harmful to souls to make it a heresy to believe what is proved

Carlyle 2:2 It is a mathematical fact that the casting of this pebble from my hand alters the centre of gravity of the universe.

Fermi 1:1 The weak nuclear force does not change over time.

Oliver Heaviside 62:3 Shall I refuse my dinner because I do not fully understand the process of digestion?

      C. P. Snow 5:3 Innocence about Science is the worst crime today.

Paul Valéry 3:6 One had to be a Newton to notice that the moon is falling, when everyone sees that it doesn't fall.

A.C. Doyle 14:8 It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories instead of theories to suit facts.

Clark 19:17 Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Roddenberry 68:12 We must question the story logic of having an all-knowing all-powerful God, who creates faulty Humans, and then blames them for his own mistake.s

He has a right to preach what he believes. Just as each poster has a right to say what they think. It isn't his fault it went viral.
