Video of North Carolina pastor's plan to 'get rid of' gays goes viral

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Video of a North Carolina pastor preaching that gays and lesbians should be rounded up inside an electric fence is going viral on the Internet, two weeks after North Carolina passed a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage and President Barack Obama voiced personal support for legalizing such marriages.

"I figured a way out, a way to get rid of all the lesbians and queers, but I couldn't get it past the Congress," Pastor Charles L. Worley can be seen telling his Providence Road Baptist Church congregation in the video, which had more than 250,000 YouTube views by Tuesday.

"Build a great big, large fence - 50 or a 100 miles long - and put all the lesbians in there,” Worley went on to say in his May 13 sermon at his Maiden, North Carolina, church. “Fly over and drop some food. Do the same thing with the queers and the homosexuals, and have that fence electrified so they can't get out. Feed them. And you know in a few years, they'll die out. You know why? They can't reproduce."

My Take: The Bible condemns a lot, but here's why we focus on homosexuality

The video had initially been posted on Providence Road’s website but was recently taken down, according to CNN affiliate WBTV-TV in Charlotte.

The phone line at Worley’s church was busy on Monday night and on Tuesday, as was Worley’s home number on Tuesday.

The church’s website was down Tuesday morning, but it had described the house of worship as fundamentalist, meaning it represents a Baptist tradition that's more conservative than the Southern Baptists.

My Take: The Christian case for gay marriage

Worley’s sermon was posted on YouTube by a group called Catawba Valley Citizens Against Hate, which is organizing a protest at the Providence Road Baptist Church on Sunday.

Addressing his congregation last Sunday, Worley referred to his earlier controversial sermon.

"I talked a little bit, I believe it was last Sunday, on the homosexual lifestyle, and there was a whole lot of people who didn't like what I said," Worley told his congregation Sunday, according to WBTV. "I want to read it out of the Bible, and then we'll go from there."

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

“Listen, all of the Sodomites, the lesbians, and all of the ... what's that word? Gays - I didn't wanna say 'queers' - that say we don't love you, I love you more than you love yourself,” Worley said, according to WBTV. “I'm praying for you to be saved."

Worley’s initial sermon was partly framed as a response to Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage, which he made in a TV interview a day after North Carolina voters passed a state constitutional amendment banning legal recognition of such marriages and other types of gay unions.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, was working Tuesday to gather criticism of Worley’s comments from other North Carolina pastors.

“I am angry and sick at heart over Pastor Worley's comments,” said the Rev. Dennis Teall-Fleming, pastor at Open Hearts Gathering in Gastonia, North Carolina, in a statement distributed by GLAAD.

“Nothing he says has anything to do with the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Teall-Fleming, who leads a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregation. “I call on all Christian and Baptist organizations that have any connection with him to condemn his comments as strongly as I do, including Providence Road Baptist Church of Maiden.”

To all the liberals and progressives reading this: you know that sick feeling you got in the pit of your stomach while watching this video? The dumfoundedness that a person could actually believe such things, and think that such a "solution" might work?

Well, that's the EXACT same feeling I get when I read yet another article saying that solar and wind power will solve our energy needs, or that a single-payer system will reduce healthcare costs.

Not saying they're morally equivalent, no, no - just intellectually equivalent.

WELL, THE SUN IS LITERALLY ONE MILLION TIMES THE SIZE OF OUR PLANET. I DON'T SEE HOW SOLAR ENERGY ISN'T A FEASIBLE OPTION. JESUS IS DEAD. SO SOLAR ENERGY IS ACTUALLY A PRETTY SWEET IDEA. TECHNICALLY, IT'S FREE ENERGY, ONCE THE SOLAR PANELS ARE PAID FOR WHICH IS LIKE BUYING ANOTHER CAR.

I DIDN'T GET A SICK FEELING WHEN I WATCH THE VIDEO HERE THOUGH. I THINK IT'S KIND OF FUNNY, BECAUSE JUST LIKE JESUS, THAT GUY IS GOING TO DIE SOME DAY AND WON'T BE GOING ANYWHERE BECAUSE NEITHER HEAVEN OR HELL EXIST. AMEN.

Hmm. So, are you saying this nutcase preacher man shouldn't consider tying the electric fence to solar panels or wind turbines? I suppose he would want to most efficient and reliable form of energy since he's paying for all this out of the church offering plate. Solar and wind might be out of his budget as a start up and the enormous fence, alone, will cost millions to fabricate and maintain. If the fence ever lost it's juice, some of the prisoners would escape and well, that wouldn't bode well for the preacher man now, would it? I'd strongly suggest he consider the security of utilizing traditional, solar and wind to keep that fence electrified should one of the sources fail. So, with your limited understanding of solar and wind power, he may not want you on his prisoner camp's energy strategy team. Just sayin'

The United States of North America is now facing hard times and social upheavels! Miss America's statue stands as a monolithic emblem of which many people a short time ago were immigrating to her land did then all view before coming to landfall. No more are immigrants coming by only boats! Some take to the air to immigrate while others migrate upon the roads either from the south or the north! Miss America was once marvelled by newcomers but nowadays only but a handful pay her visits! Her monolithic stature of a statue weighs heavily upon the proud folks who still take their children to awe and marvel upons her immensity! Few people know Miss Ameriica's history! I am in doubt if she is even nowadays taught about her stateliness in any "public" school system let alone the colleges or universities!

Designed by Frédéric Bartholdi and dedicated on October 28, 1886. The statue, a gift to the United States from the people of France, is of a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, who bears a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet. The statue has become an icon of freedom and of the United States.

does anyone seriously believe religion will be around in another 500 years or even a 1,000 years from now? i truly doubt it. as humans learn more intricate sciences and venture out into space, religion will become a mythology taught to children as "when the world was full of hate" or as a course on "how to start wars"

Humans are as much beings of Science as they are spiritual beings. In time, humans will understand both are one in the same. This is not to say humans will worship Science as a Deity but rather, the understanding of the relationship between all things will be far clearer than the perspective humans have now that Science and Spirituality are two separate things.

      May 23, 2012 at 7:21 am |
    • Primewonk

@ Possum – Science and spirituality ARE different things. One deals with the supernatural, and one deals with the natural. Science doesn't deal with the supernatural. Because once you posit the supernatural is real, then "goddidit" and "poof, then another miracle occurs" become valid answers. These answers are not falsifiable. Thus science ignores them.

I refuse to answer hatred with hatred – or let anger rule my heart. The best thing I can do is continue to love – love my partner of almost 11 years, love my neighbors and try to be good to them, love my family and friends, and love this pastor, and those in North Carolina – and all states and countries – who see suppressing our rights as some kind of "victory" to celebrate. You do not have victory over me and my family. We choose love. We will model that love to you over and over again. And, like water that finds a path through the hardest rock – it may take time, but we will some day have equal rights in this country. I hope that day finds you with an open heart, full of love and kindness, and free from hatred, fear, and anger.

Put all the Christian bigots who feel this way in North Carolina and Tennessee and build an electric fence around the states so they can't get out. Put something in the water so they can't reproduce and teach their children to be ignorant. And let them die off and be banned to hell for judging others... against God's rules.

Religion, teaching and promoting hate, contempt or others, self-righteous anger and acting on it (OK by God) ignorance and that if you have religion you have rights but others who don't subscribe and submit to your religious authority, well then, it's ok to walk all over them, discipline them in the name of God, take away their rights and judge them.

Exactly how is religion different than say, the Taliban, I mean - the religious leaders over there think they have the right to impose their religion on everyone, demand everyone submit to their religious authority and keep all the rights and power for themselves and force others to embrace their religious philosophy or suffer the consequences.

I don't think he could be convicted in court, though what he said is completely hateful. He has a 1st amendment right to say what he said, no matter how much we dislike it. If we take away his right to say as he pleases today, it could form a very nasty slippery slope. It's better to just ignore this stuff and live our lives.

I'd suggest the good preacher read The Bible. Matthew 15 clearly states (and I quote) "It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles. What comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this is what defiles. For out of the heart come evil intentions, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile."

Oh yeah, and Jesus said something to the effect of "Love one another." And he said it multiple times. Not just once. That has to mean something.

Personally, I do not desire to either Gay Bash, nor Lesbian Bash those who have chosen this lifestyle. And yes, it is a chosen lifestyle, for those gay doctors/scientists who are attempted to try to discover a gay gene, and make God out to be a liar, they have found no such gene!. I know of people who have chosen this lifestyle, and when I ask them point blank if they know its wrong, they always say Yes. I am not their judge, I pray for them. But, as well, for those high profile personalities who keep insisting they don't have a hidden agenda, then my question is, why do they keep trying to get into the schools and warp the minds of our children with their perversions?!. Yes, it is your lifestyle, but if you choose to keep putting it in my face, then I must continually draw a line in the sand.. As for me and my house "We will serve the Lord"... Despite what this president says, he has shown he will turn his back on God for the sake of an election.. Okay, he's a sell out but his actions will cost this country and the people as well. God will not be mocked!.... Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed for these perversions. Many churches have allowed these perversions to enter their churches by marrying these people.. God will not be Mocked.. and Yes the bible talks about those churches that merely please itching ears. (God is not in those churches anymore).. God will not be Mocked. And Judgement begins the churches, and its people!.
