Video of North Carolina pastor's plan to 'get rid of' gays goes viral

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Video of a North Carolina pastor preaching that gays and lesbians should be rounded up inside an electric fence is going viral on the Internet, two weeks after North Carolina passed a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage and President Barack Obama voiced personal support for legalizing such marriages.

"I figured a way out, a way to get rid of all the lesbians and queers, but I couldn't get it past the Congress," Pastor Charles L. Worley can be seen telling his Providence Road Baptist Church congregation in the video, which had more than 250,000 YouTube views by Tuesday.

"Build a great big, large fence - 50 or a 100 miles long - and put all the lesbians in there,” Worley went on to say in his May 13 sermon at his Maiden, North Carolina, church. “Fly over and drop some food. Do the same thing with the queers and the homosexuals, and have that fence electrified so they can't get out. Feed them. And you know in a few years, they'll die out. You know why? They can't reproduce."

My Take: The Bible condemns a lot, but here's why we focus on homosexuality

The video had initially been posted on Providence Road’s website but was recently taken down, according to CNN affiliate WBTV-TV in Charlotte.

The phone line at Worley’s church was busy on Monday night and on Tuesday, as was Worley’s home number on Tuesday.

The church’s website was down Tuesday morning, but it had described the house of worship as fundamentalist, meaning it represents a Baptist tradition that's more conservative than the Southern Baptists.

My Take: The Christian case for gay marriage

Worley’s sermon was posted on YouTube by a group called Catawba Valley Citizens Against Hate, which is organizing a protest at the Providence Road Baptist Church on Sunday.

Addressing his congregation last Sunday, Worley referred to his earlier controversial sermon.

"I talked a little bit, I believe it was last Sunday, on the homosexual lifestyle, and there was a whole lot of people who didn't like what I said," Worley told his congregation Sunday, according to WBTV. "I want to read it out of the Bible, and then we'll go from there."

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

“Listen, all of the Sodomites, the lesbians, and all of the ... what's that word? Gays - I didn't wanna say 'queers' - that say we don't love you, I love you more than you love yourself,” Worley said, according to WBTV. “I'm praying for you to be saved."

Worley’s initial sermon was partly framed as a response to Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage, which he made in a TV interview a day after North Carolina voters passed a state constitutional amendment banning legal recognition of such marriages and other types of gay unions.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, was working Tuesday to gather criticism of Worley’s comments from other North Carolina pastors.

“I am angry and sick at heart over Pastor Worley's comments,” said the Rev. Dennis Teall-Fleming, pastor at Open Hearts Gathering in Gastonia, North Carolina, in a statement distributed by GLAAD.

“Nothing he says has anything to do with the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Teall-Fleming, who leads a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregation. “I call on all Christian and Baptist organizations that have any connection with him to condemn his comments as strongly as I do, including Providence Road Baptist Church of Maiden.”

    Worley,

You should be condemned and arrested for preaching genocide. You call yourself a pastor? Shame on you!

    • Rational Libertarian

No, he shouldn't be arrested. Free speech must be vehemently defended.

    • Patrick

Actually I do agree with RationalLIbertarian on this one, UNLESS, the Pastor portrays his instruction as somehow more worthy than professional instruction from a Doctor or Psychologist. Then I think he should be held accountable in the same way a doctor or psychologist can be held accountable for malpractice.

Rational Libertarian, if hate speech is protected and vehemently defended do you defend Charles Manson? He never killed anyone, just talked about it & others did the killing. Should he be free to sermonize about it?

      May 23, 2012 at 9:28 am |
    • Rational Libertarian

I'm pretty sure he had some direct involvement in the killings but if not, then yes, he should be free to do whatever racist hippy stuff he wants to do.

      May 23, 2012 at 9:31 am |
    • Lilith

Rational, being "pretty sure" does not make it right. He was found guilty but not of actually killing anyone, so you need to start defending him and get him out of prison. I understand and agree with your main point, but there are limits to freedoms. The weaker minds in our society can easily be called to action by an "authority" speaking like this. People in positions of authority need to take responsibility for their authority status.

This îdiot pastor has a right to say whatever hatefully things he wants. He does not have a right to incite his minions to commit violence. If he exhorts his psychotic minions to go and kill gay folks, then he could be brought up on hate crime laws.

Btw, what is up with North Carolina these days? Haters who somehow believe they are Christian-surely an indication of a serious mental health issue.

Probably the same thing that anti-Christian haters have been up to for the past decade. Hypocrisy stinks, ya know?

What an arrogant, close-minded, rude human being!!! I feel sorry for the people in this man's congregation because this P O S is the FURTHEST thing from a Christian. God doesn't care who you love. He only cares that you treat ALL people with respect and dignity. How would he like it if I said we should gather up all the disgusting people in the world like this guy and put them in a crematorium? This way, no more hateful, sick, offensive, and highly disturbing comments will be made about people that contribute more to society than this man ever will. I think he should focus a little more on spreading the word of God instead of bashing God's children. O and Pastor, what is "aginit??" Pretty sure last time I looked in the dictionary, "again" and "it" are two separate words.

"How would he like it if I said we should gather up all the disgusting people in the world like this guy and put them in a crematorium?"

Why must you lie to make your point? Is it because you really have no just rational for you position. The guy didn't advocate killing them as you insinuate. He merely suggested that they be separated which is prudent when you think about it. They are a canncer to us and our children.

If he hates gays then, maybe, just maybe he is gay and has self hatred issues. Studies have shown that people who hate gays that much, are really gay themselves and hate themselves for not coming out. Talk to a therapist pastor Worsley!!! It's just so obvious or he is just plain EVIL!! Get a life!!!

    May 23, 2012 at 9:14 am |

Agreed, the world is already too small a place to be worrying about who's gay and who's not. We just need to learn to coexist and if need be leave each other alone. Cause the last time someone said something close to that, it didn't turn out too well.

Whether it's throwing people behind a fence or passing laws to control what people do, if you support taking action to force people to comply with your beliefs, you're a far cry from the mandate of Jesus Christ to "turn the other cheek".

    May 23, 2012 at 9:12 am |
    • notanymore

Wanna quit with the eisegesis? Turn the other cheek is in regard to offenses against ones own person and not matters of morality and sin. Otherwise the Christian could not fulfill the command to be salt and light to a lost and dying world.

      May 23, 2012 at 9:17 am |
    • Bill the Cat

Turn the other cheek was Jesus' words on someone else striking you across the face to shame you. It has nothing to do with pointing out sin.

      May 23, 2012 at 9:19 am |
    • Patrick

Someone slapping you has nothing to do with morality? Really?

      May 23, 2012 at 9:22 am |
    • Bill the Cat

Really! In the culture of the Bible, it was the one who lost the battle of words who would resort to violence. Turning the other cheek was a way to show them that they had lost the debate.

      May 23, 2012 at 9:25 am |
    • mandarax

Bill the Cat, as is typical for religious opinions, you're just making that up. Jesus never explained it that way, you are just deciding what you want it to mean.

Leviticus 25:44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

Exodus 21:20 “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property.

Genesis 19:33 That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and slept with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.

34 The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Last night I slept with my father. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.” 35 So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.

36 So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.

Deuteronomy 22:28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and r@pes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

Genesis 19:8 Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”

1 Timothy 2:11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.

1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people.

34 Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.

Matthew 19: (Jesus Speaking) 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for $e xu al immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

1 Corinthians 7:10 To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. 11 But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.

Numbers 31: (Moses Speaking) 15 “Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them. 16 “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the LORD in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the LORD’s people. 17 Now ki11 all the boys. And ki11 every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

2 Kings 6:27 The king replied, “If the LORD does not help you, where can I get help for you? From the threshing floor? From the winepress?” 28 Then he asked her, “What’s the matter?”

She answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give up your son so we may eat him today, and tomorrow we’ll eat my son.’ 29 So we cooked my son and ate him. The next day I said to her, ‘Give up your son so we may eat him,’ but she had hidden him.”

FORGIVE ME CHRISTIANS IF I'VE TAKEN SOMETHING OUT OF CONTEXT. PLEASE EXPLAIN THE CORRECT CONTEXT AND HOPEFULLY, IF THE HOLY SPIRIT GUIDES YOUR EXPLANATION, YOU WILL DRAW SOME SOULS TOWARDS CHRIST. (THIS SHOULD CLEAR OUT THE FORUM)

It is to bad the gltb people do not focus on how out of control and corrupt the government is instead of focusing their attention on someone who is "RIGHT" you people are not special, you have the same rights everyone else has. But they expect more because they have a problem and want special rights and you want acceptance into the main stream population when in fact it is them that are ill and need sever help. The youth of this country are being programmed into accepting these sick people as well as being programmed to have no free thinking, comply, conform, do not question authority no individualism there are no looser's. Keep up the good work Pastor you have more support than you know! There still is freedom of speech and it is 'OK' to dislike, question "ALL" authority, never ever trust the police they are not your friend, and the government is the axis of "EVIL" it has become a tyranny !!!!

Why do people who purposefully choose to ignorant about science come onto message boards and demonstrate that ignorance for all to see?

I couldn't help but notice that none of you super-geniuses bothered to either post a citation to peer-reviewed science showing gays choose to be gay, or refuted a single solitary one of the citations I posted.

Why is that? Why, after tens of thousands of requests has a single solitary one of you môrons had the balls to post a single solitary citation that supports your contention?

This is exactly the mentality that the GOP/Tea Party is promoting and now they are using religion to promote their ideology of hate and derision. So sad!

Please cite any proof you have of the GOP planning to put LGBT people into concentration camps.

Rational Libertarian....you totally missed what I was saying. No where did I mention putting gays and lesbians behind fences as in the article. If you had actually read what I said instead of what you wanted to see and respond to, you would have seen the words mentality and ideology. I was speaking about the closed minded repressive culture and the GOP/Tea Party is clinging to and trying to spread. Now, they are using religion to spread this same ideology. Any sane person who knows anything about religion or humanity would not follow such thinking.
