Video of North Carolina pastor's plan to 'get rid of' gays goes viral

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Video of a North Carolina pastor preaching that gays and lesbians should be rounded up inside an electric fence is going viral on the Internet, two weeks after North Carolina passed a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage and President Barack Obama voiced personal support for legalizing such marriages.

"I figured a way out, a way to get rid of all the lesbians and queers, but I couldn't get it past the Congress," Pastor Charles L. Worley can be seen telling his Providence Road Baptist Church congregation in the video, which had more than 250,000 YouTube views by Tuesday.

"Build a great big, large fence - 50 or a 100 miles long - and put all the lesbians in there,” Worley went on to say in his May 13 sermon at his Maiden, North Carolina, church. “Fly over and drop some food. Do the same thing with the queers and the homosexuals, and have that fence electrified so they can't get out. Feed them. And you know in a few years, they'll die out. You know why? They can't reproduce."

My Take: The Bible condemns a lot, but here's why we focus on homosexuality

The video had initially been posted on Providence Road’s website but was recently taken down, according to CNN affiliate WBTV-TV in Charlotte.

The phone line at Worley’s church was busy on Monday night and on Tuesday, as was Worley’s home number on Tuesday.

The church’s website was down Tuesday morning, but it had described the house of worship as fundamentalist, meaning it represents a Baptist tradition that's more conservative than the Southern Baptists.

My Take: The Christian case for gay marriage

Worley’s sermon was posted on YouTube by a group called Catawba Valley Citizens Against Hate, which is organizing a protest at the Providence Road Baptist Church on Sunday.

Addressing his congregation last Sunday, Worley referred to his earlier controversial sermon.

"I talked a little bit, I believe it was last Sunday, on the homosexual lifestyle, and there was a whole lot of people who didn't like what I said," Worley told his congregation Sunday, according to WBTV. "I want to read it out of the Bible, and then we'll go from there."

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

“Listen, all of the Sodomites, the lesbians, and all of the ... what's that word? Gays - I didn't wanna say 'queers' - that say we don't love you, I love you more than you love yourself,” Worley said, according to WBTV. “I'm praying for you to be saved."

Worley’s initial sermon was partly framed as a response to Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage, which he made in a TV interview a day after North Carolina voters passed a state constitutional amendment banning legal recognition of such marriages and other types of gay unions.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, was working Tuesday to gather criticism of Worley’s comments from other North Carolina pastors.

“I am angry and sick at heart over Pastor Worley's comments,” said the Rev. Dennis Teall-Fleming, pastor at Open Hearts Gathering in Gastonia, North Carolina, in a statement distributed by GLAAD.

“Nothing he says has anything to do with the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Teall-Fleming, who leads a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregation. “I call on all Christian and Baptist organizations that have any connection with him to condemn his comments as strongly as I do, including Providence Road Baptist Church of Maiden.”

Let's imagine for a second how many gay children might be in that congregation growing up hearing that kind of nonsense with no idea that mainstream medicine, science and psychology say the exact opposite. GOD BE WITH THEM. THE REAL GOD.

That's what concerns me the most patrick. this congregation has children who are either being raised to be violent bigots or are gay themselves and live in fear and self hatred. terrible.

@Peppy – How is that a barrell roll?

    • Wow

Patrick, I think it means you are a sane person with an enlightened point of view that he agrees with, at least judging by where he has said that to people here. Then again, I could be dead wrong.

      "Yes, Wow, barrel roll!"

INTERPRETATION: I don't know what a barrell roll is and I don't even know how it would apply here. I just like saying it.

Patrick, if you continue on this path of doubting the power of the barrel roll, I will have to revoke your status. Now get out there and barrel roll people like freethinker again!

You KNOW this guy is in the closet. He wants all the gays locked up in one place so he knows where he can go for a quickie. Sick individual. He should leave people alone and work on himself

This guy is not the problem at all. There are a ton of hate mongering mentally ill people in the country. His followers, anyone who gives him a voice, anyone who didn't walk out of his 'sermon' are the problem.

Leviticus 25:44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

Exodus 21:20 “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property.

Genesis 19:33 That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and slept with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.

34 The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Last night I slept with my father. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.” 35 So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.

36 So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.

Deuteronomy 22:28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and r@pes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

Genesis 19:8 Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”

1 Timothy 2:11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.

1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people.

34 Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.

Matthew 19: (Jesus Speaking) 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for $e xu al immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

1 Corinthians 7:10 To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. 11 But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.

Numbers 31: (Moses Speaking) 15 “Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them. 16 “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the LORD in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the LORD’s people. 17 Now ki11 all the boys. And ki11 every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

2 Kings 6:27 The king replied, “If the LORD does not help you, where can I get help for you? From the threshing floor? From the winepress?” 28 Then he asked her, “What’s the matter?”

She answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give up your son so we may eat him today, and tomorrow we’ll eat my son.’ 29 So we cooked my son and ate him. The next day I said to her, ‘Give up your son so we may eat him,’ but she had hidden him.”

FORGIVE ME CHRISTIANS IF I'VE TAKEN SOMETHING OUT OF CONTEXT. PLEASE EXPLAIN THE CORRECT CONTEXT AND HOPEFULLY, IF THE HOLY SPIRIT GUIDES YOUR EXPLANATION, YOU WILL DRAW SOME SOULS TOWARDS CHRIST. (THIS SHOULD CLEAR OUT THE FORUM)

      @John

You said, "The LORD knows all and sees all, even the very thoughts you have."
While you are free to believe in fairy tales and imaginary babysitters that read your mind, rational people will dismiss that nonsense for what it is.

In the US there is something called "freedom of religion". That means that you are free to believe and worship as you wish, no matter how infantile those beliefs may be, but also that everyone else is free to do the same. That means that your beliefs mean jack-shit for anyone else.

You are free to live your life according to your ancient fables and myths. You are not free to expect anyone else to do the same.

You said, "Even when the moderator stops someone from posting the Truth, Love, and Word of God because he/she does not like the message."
If you got your message from your bible, it is highly unlikely to be the truth. All you have is speculation. To believe that discrimination against a disliked minority is "what your god wants", is moronic at best. If you think your god wants to to actively make the lives of your fellow man miserable, you are worshiping a monster.

You said, "You are not stopping my words but His."
Pretty incompetent god you've got there, don't you think? If they were his words and he wanted them published, don't you thing an all-powerful being could figure out to circumvent the filters on this site?

You said, "May the LORD open your eyes!"
It wasn't your vile god that did it, but my eyes and mind are open.

You said, "I pray for you!"
And I'm sure that rational people will continue to think for you.

@bren222 – Sorry, but an addiction isn't the same as someone's $e xual orientation being a certain way for their entire life. And it hardly classifies as an addiction. @John

You said, "Freedom of religion and speech. Great things aren't they when ALLOWED to express them."
You are free to show the world how much of a bigot you are. I'm free to show how inane your beliefs are. It is when you try to restrict other people from doing what they want based on your religion, is when you cross the line.

Your religion is no argument to stop anyone else from doing anything. Unless someone voluntarily subscribes to a particular religion, that religion has nothing to say. Your religion doesn't even have any say over whether someone who doesn't subscribe to it can commit murder (we have laws to cover that, but your religion should stay out of it).

If your religion helps its followers to obey secular law, that might be considered a benefit, but your religion is in no way a replacement for secular law, nor does it supersede it.

Your religion can place additional restrictions on you, but it doesn't place them on the general population. It also can't give you freedoms that are not available to the general population.

You said, "I just added you to my prayer list because I love you not because I hate you like you express towards me."
I'll let you know if I can tell the difference. Don't hold your breath, though.

Just for the record, I don't hate you, I merely hate your sins (does that sound familiar?).

Totally Wrong. We've had the ability to accurately and affordably test people's $e xu ality in a lab setting since the 1950s. And in all that time, not one person has ever been able to show that their $e xua lity changed during the course of their lifetime. Not from gay to straight, not from straight to gay, not even from gay to bi$ exu al. Not through theraputic means and not through religious means. Also, there have been tons of studies done on ho mo$ exua lity – if it was a choice there would be precursors to that choice leading someone to want to be attracted to the same gender or leading them to actually having attraction for the same gender – yet not one study has ever found any precursor or cause.

Math isn't your strong suit, it is.
9 of 22 citations are written BEFORE the year 2000.
There's around 25 years of scientific studies listed there.
And while I realize the likelihood of you ever having read a scientific paper is slim to nil, I hope you realize that such studies strive to be free of bias.
Facts are sterile, neither vulgar nor sublime. The data speak for itself.

Now we come to the part of the program where you respond with citations that support your position – that gays choose to be gay, and you respond with citations that refute this data. It's okay. There is choice involved when one realizes they are gay, and that choice is whether to fight or embrace their true selves. It is quite a journey I can tell you. I struggled many years. Matt 19: (Jesus Speaking) 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for $e xu al immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

1 Corinth 7:10 To the mar ried I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. 11 But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.

Why aren't you trying to ban divorce and remarriage??? Know what a hyp ocrite is? Read Romans 2.

    • TPN51

Patrick, you have been here as long as I and have read blogs from Christians that infuriate us and make us laugh. But the crux of the problem and I hope you share my view is that Christians repeat what they hear in church or Sunday school as they make all those notes in the margins. They never research any further then that. This why they like to quote versus. I bet most of them don't even know the definition of a parable, or any other word used repeatedly in the Bible. They believe what there taught like a caged, trained animal would do no more.

      May 23, 2012 at 9:44 am |
    • mandarax

I agree TPN51. It kills me when they say things like "many scientists doubt evolution" or "archaeologists have proved the bible." They have obviously never met a biologist or an archaeologist, they are just parroting the false assertions given to them on their church website.

      May 23, 2012 at 9:37 am |

4 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[a] by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[b]”
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[c]”
7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[d]” At which time the Lord our God did a barrel roll and confused the devil. When Jesus had seen that the devil was no longer in pursuit, he performed a second, more graceful barrel roll which returned him to Jerusalem.

    • Rational Libertarian

Yes there are other ways of looking at it. He's probably just a man who's mind has been warped by religious fanaticism since a young age. He was probably brought up in a fundamentalist Christian household, and has known nothing but the hateful side of religion his whole life. Doesn't make him evil.

      May 23, 2012 at 9:34 am |
    • Mike

Patrick: I understand what you wrote. But he is simply evil.
He's committed the greatest sin, and obviously is not sorry for it.
He's running people away from God. That is what Satan did in the very beginning of the Bible.
But of course, this "preacher" probably has bothered to read that part.

mariska, people aren't gay because they come from gay parents. Whether or not you removed all the gays from a population, new gay people would be continue to born in the original population because it is (clearly) a natural variant in human sexuality.
