Video of North Carolina pastor's plan to 'get rid of' gays goes viral

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Video of a North Carolina pastor preaching that gays and lesbians should be rounded up inside an electric fence is going viral on the Internet, two weeks after North Carolina passed a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage and President Barack Obama voiced personal support for legalizing such marriages.

"I figured a way out, a way to get rid of all the lesbians and queers, but I couldn't get it past the Congress," Pastor Charles L. Worley can be seen telling his Providence Road Baptist Church congregation in the video, which had more than 250,000 YouTube views by Tuesday.

"Build a great big, large fence - 50 or a 100 miles long - and put all the lesbians in there,” Worley went on to say in his May 13 sermon at his Maiden, North Carolina, church. “Fly over and drop some food. Do the same thing with the queers and the homosexuals, and have that fence electrified so they can't get out. Feed them. And you know in a few years, they'll die out. You know why? They can't reproduce."

My Take: The Bible condemns a lot, but here's why we focus on homosexuality

The video had initially been posted on Providence Road’s website but was recently taken down, according to CNN affiliate WBTV-TV in Charlotte.

The phone line at Worley’s church was busy on Monday night and on Tuesday, as was Worley’s home number on Tuesday.

The church’s website was down Tuesday morning, but it had described the house of worship as fundamentalist, meaning it represents a Baptist tradition that's more conservative than the Southern Baptists.

My Take: The Christian case for gay marriage

Worley’s sermon was posted on YouTube by a group called Catawba Valley Citizens Against Hate, which is organizing a protest at the Providence Road Baptist Church on Sunday.

Addressing his congregation last Sunday, Worley referred to his earlier controversial sermon.

"I talked a little bit, I believe it was last Sunday, on the homosexual lifestyle, and there was a whole lot of people who didn't like what I said," Worley told his congregation Sunday, according to WBTV. "I want to read it out of the Bible, and then we'll go from there."

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

“Listen, all of the Sodomites, the lesbians, and all of the ... what's that word? Gays - I didn't wanna say 'queers' - that say we don't love you, I love you more than you love yourself,” Worley said, according to WBTV. “I'm praying for you to be saved."

Worley’s initial sermon was partly framed as a response to Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage, which he made in a TV interview a day after North Carolina voters passed a state constitutional amendment banning legal recognition of such marriages and other types of gay unions.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, was working Tuesday to gather criticism of Worley’s comments from other North Carolina pastors.

“I am angry and sick at heart over Pastor Worley's comments,” said the Rev. Dennis Teall-Fleming, pastor at Open Hearts Gathering in Gastonia, North Carolina, in a statement distributed by GLAAD.

“Nothing he says has anything to do with the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Teall-Fleming, who leads a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregation. “I call on all Christian and Baptist organizations that have any connection with him to condemn his comments as strongly as I do, including Providence Road Baptist Church of Maiden.”

Ah, how refreshing it is to see the understanding love and tolerance of Jesus being put forth as a witness to his teachings before a congregation of true believers in Christ.

Crap, I hate it when I do that. I just posted in the wrong thread, again.

Imprisoning gays is not a "new idea" as the pastor thinks... maybe he is not aware of our History, the dark passages of it, that is. Hitler tried to do it. These fenced areas were called CONCENTRATION CAMPS!!!! Neo Nazis are not free to speak out their hatred towards human beings, why should a priest be? This is criminal. He is fomenting violence that will lead to unhappiness, wounded people and even deaths... HOW FAR CAN HE BE FROM "THE LORD'S MESSAGE" of loving thy neighbor?????People like him should be kept from expressing their ideas, they are dangerous and might end up hurting a lot of people! SHAME ON HIM AND ON THOSE WHO THINK LIKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with your sentiment, but we should BE very careful of much we restrict speech. Right now it requires a pretty significant burden to indict someone on their speech and it should be that way. We have other ways of protecting our society from such hate-mongerers. Education and application of law to protect our citizens is the answer.

And yes neo-Nazis are quite free to speak their simple-minded hatred. Not in Germany or France perhaps, but here it is protected. Frankly, they are just self-identifying as people to avoid.

Freedom of speech protects them as well as everyone else.

"The response speech you don't like is more speech, not more laws." – someone said this, i think

When I was a young man I remember seeing a mother with her two young sons on a sidewalk creating a ruckus. When I approached I saw the two boys frantically circling a preying mantis. The boys were frightened as was there mother, they have never seen anything like it before. After screaming and circling the insect one of the boys plopped his foot down on top of the insect, squishing and killing it. Seeing that it was dead, both the mother and the other boy followed in suit and continued to stomp on the insect.
    Ignorance has no boundaries.

@ old town: sorry had to post all the lyrics to "imagine". it's such a great song with a great message.

    Imagine there's no heaven
    It's easy if you try
    No hell below us
    Above us only sky
    Imagine all the people
    Living for today...

    Imagine there's no countries
    It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion too
    Imagine all the people
    Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

    Imagine no possessions
    I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
    A brotherhood of man
    Imagine all the people
    Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

john lennon can imagine all he wanted. an d beings the human soul lives forever. I believe he has it figured out by now. sitting in hell looking up at Glory. and knowing he has no longer a chance for salvation. after denying Christ as his savior. imagin that !

      You have evidence of this?

      May 23, 2012 at 12:39 pm |
    • Wow

      @ Robert

I would hate to live your life, scared all the time that the ultimate Orwellian big brother is there, just waiting to catch at something for which he can then place me in a really bad place. Not just for a long time, not even a really long time, but for all of eternity. One lifetime to either get it right or get it wrong. To boot, he's not even going to reveal himself in a way that let's me know exactly what the rules are? Whatever, you can have your scary religion.

Frankly, I would rather spend eternity in hell with Lennon than even a minute in the presence of filth like the pastor in NC.

@Robert: I have only one question, without using the buybull...where is the evidence that John is looking up at god from this place called hell? How do you even know hell exists or heaven for that matter or your god?

@WASP: Thank you...one of the best songs ever written.

      Agreed. Excellent song.

Only one issue, though: hunger is not an arbitrary human construct, and can't be done away with so easily.

Its really hard to believe that this many Christians and others think that the place described in the bible means a literal eternal place of torment. The depictions most place of hell and the Devil come from a depiction of hell by Danté. The accurate translation of the word hades is common grave. The word Hell is no where in the original text. Mans common grave is where one goes, death itself pays sins wages. Dont believe me?! Do a little reasearch into the original texts and there accurate translation. Sadly the concept of Hell was adopted to put fear in Christians by some denominations. Its a horrible falasy for several reasons, it demands obediance to God not out of pure love but partly from fear and it paints God as a cruel sadistic ruler. Both of which are not accurate! The translated word Gehenna is eternal cutting off, meaning no rememberance. Hense a persons grave is called a "memorial" (kept in ones memory) tomb. No, there is no place of firey torment. There is a scripture that talks of a pagan people who pass their children in the fire, this made God angry as he states it is something that has "never even come to my mind". Yes this act of burning one never even crossed Gods mind or heart. In Revelation it states that both hades(grave) and gehenna( grave but for those not remembered) would themselves be cast into the lake of fire( meaning complete destruction as fire does this). So how if translated Hell can Hell be thrown into Hell! Give it thought, see for yourself. Stop! being misslead.

Robert, are you a God of Death? You seem to be privy to information the living do not have. And that right there, is what gives the faithful a bad stigma at times. Speaking without actually knowing. It's all specualtion, and best guesses.

I think it is all fiction, however:
"And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom." Luke 16:23
"Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire." Rev 20:15
"... They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire." Jude 1:7

I thought that it was a Federal crime to preform hate speeches....why isn't this guy in jail! "In law, hate speech is any speech, gesture or conduct, writing, or display which is forbidden because it may incite violence or prejudicial action against or by a protected individual or group, or because it disparages or intimidates a protected individual or group."

    May 23, 2012 at 12:07 pm |
    • MarkinFL

Ummm. You are seriously mistaken. There is no law against hate speech. The only speech that is restricted involves libel and inciting to violence(very directly).
The first amendment protects all of us. On the other hand the 1st amendment has nothing top do with public opinion.

13 If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing.

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.?

that sure is magnaminous of you to equate gay people with killers, liars and robbers. I think gay people would prefer that you hate them than love them to death. I have always detested the expression 'love the sinner, but hate the sin' as nothing more than a proposed shield (at least that is what the christian hopes) from the charge of discrimination.

  11. Blessings

In the name of God! Fanatics all around us. Well intentioned but wrong, just wrong. It's great being a fundamentalist because you don't have to think for your self. And, Jesus wants us to think for ourselves by considering the principles he taught us to live by. That's why he used parables. It's a lot harder than being a fundamentalist where there is no gray–only black or white. Christianity is not that simple, nor that easy. Following Christ is hard. We need to work at it. Bless you pastor. Listen to the Holy Spirit because you are wrong on this one.

Why is that the media focuses on the EXTREMES and not the views of the majority of us? I am a christian, and certainly lean to the right, but I dont preach hate, nor does anyone involved in my church. This guy doent deserve the air time he is getting. This anti christian, anti-gay, and anti eveything else rhetoric is WAY out of hand. I find it humorous that you would say the original Christian faith is not Christian. What it must be to live in your perfect little world of hatred and bigotry. A true follower of Christianity knows that he is not to judge others, but rather love them no matter what. From the example of Jesus I will turn the other cheek to your comment. Out of love for you I will suggest that you educate yourself and stop living a life of judgement and hatred toward those unlike yourself. You will find a fulfillment in loving thy neighbor that you could never experience with your current frame of mind. I will pray that the true light of Christ enters you and allows you to see what it is to truly be Christian. Peace

I may be way off the mark here but how is this different from Hitler's fascism? Adolf was also preaching that all others who did not fit into his idea of "perfect human" should be penned up as a lesser species. Said pens were called concentration camps, I imagine he also found some religious justification for his actions. So i ask again, how is this different? In fact, why should our response to the good old pastor's "ideas" be any different than our militarist response to Hitler's?

"The two largest groups containing prisoners in the camps, both numbering in the millions, were the Polish Jews and the Soviet prisoners of war (POWs) held without trial or judicial process. Large numbers of Roma (or Gypsies), ethnic Poles, political prisoners, ho.mos.exuals, people with disabilities"

So not only is it not different, it's exactly the same.
