Mixed reactions around church whose pastor’s anti-gay rant went viral

By Ismael Estrada, CNN

Maiden, North Carolina (CNN) – Just about everyone here is talking about the local pastor who made national headlines this week after a video that features him telling congregants how to “get rid of” gays went viral.

Neighbors of the Providence Road Baptist Church – where a sign advertises “old time religion” - say Pastor Charles Worley is known for being over the top, with one neighbor describing him as “fire and brimstone” whose views are out of sync with much of the surrounding community.

"I figured a way out, a way to get rid of all the lesbians and queers, but I couldn't get it past the Congress,” Worley told his church on May 13, in a video that has been seen half a million times on YouTube.

“Build a great big, large fence  50 or 100 miles long  and put all the lesbians in there,” Worley said. “Fly over and drop some food. Do the same thing with the queers and the homosexuals, and have that fence electrified so they can't get out. Feed them. And you know in a few years, they'll die out. You know why? They can't reproduce."

My Take: The Christian case for gay marriage

Some church members, who declined to give their names, defended their pastor, saying his words had been taken out of context. "He said he would feed them!" some church members told CNN, referring to the Worley’s idea for rounding up gays.

Worley “takes a real firm stand on the Bible and what it says about different things,” said church member Joe Heffner. “Whether I like it or not or whether anybody else likes it."

Another church member, who declined to give his name, said that “Being gay and lesbian or homosexual is wrong according to the Bible… it’s Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve."

My Take: The Bible condemns a lot, but here's why we focus on homosexuality

"We love the people, hate the sin, OK? Point blank,” he continued. “You need to lay off my pastor."

The pastor's sermon also attacked President Obama, with Worley saying that "I ain’t going to vote for a baby killer and a homosexual lover."

On Wednesday, the group Americans United for Separation of Church and State filed a complaint with the IRS alleging that Worley violated the rules of his church's tax-exempt status by engaging in political speech against a candidate.

“Pastor Worley’s vicious and mean-spirited assault on gays and lesbians is bad enough,” said the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United. “His pulpit command that people not vote for President Obama is a violation of federal tax law. I urge the IRS to act swiftly to investigate this matter.”

Video of the sermon had initially been posted on Providence Road’s website but was recently taken down, according to CNN affiliate WBTV-TV in Charlotte. The phone line at Worley’s church has been busy since Monday night, and Worley’s home number has been busy since Tuesday.

The church’s website has also been down, but it had described the house of worship as fundamentalist, meaning it represents a Baptist tradition that's more conservative than the Southern Baptists.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

Worley’s sermon was posted on YouTube by a group called Catawba Valley Citizens Against Hate, which is organizing a protest at the Providence Road Baptist Church on Sunday.

Addressing his congregation last Sunday, Worley referred to his earlier controversial sermon.

"I talked a little bit, I believe it was last Sunday, on the homosexual lifestyle, and there was a whole lot of people who didn't like what I said," Worley told his congregation Sunday, according to WBTV. "I want to read it out of the Bible, and then we'll go from there."

“Listen, all of the Sodomites, the lesbians, and all of the ... what's that word? Gays  I didn't wanna say 'queers'  that say we don't love you, I love you more than you love yourself,” Worley said, according to WBTV. “I'm praying for you to be saved."

Worley’s initial sermon was partly framed as a response to Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage, which he made in a TV interview a day after North Carolina voters passed a state constitutional amendment banning legal recognition of such marriages and other types of gay unions.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, was working Tuesday to gather criticism of Worley’s comments from other North Carolina pastors.

“I am angry and sick at heart over Pastor Worley's comments,” said the Rev. Dennis Teall-Fleming, pastor at Open Hearts Gathering in Gastonia, North Carolina, in a statement distributed by GLAAD.

“Nothing he says has anything to do with the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Teall-Fleming, who leads a Disciples of Christ congregation. “I call on all Christian and Baptist organizations that have any connection with him to condemn his comments as strongly as I do, including Providence Road Baptist Church of Maiden.”

  2. A Serpent's Thought

I support no person who would outrightly want to herd people for their sensual ills. We are said to love each other despite another's differences and views! God loves the person and not the person's ill-will! In God do we all live out our life and in livelihoods do we avail ourselves the pleasures sought!

2 Corinthians 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in [them]; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean [thing]; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

The love of a man for a woman and her love for her man is one of the most treasured understandings in God's revealing eyes! I do not hate you yet I do sorrow for your vanities sakes! I do though beseech you sodomizers to reconsider your own actions and how God views sodomy as being vile and wicked actions! Even the "heteralists" do sometimes commit the actions of sodomy! The five heads of S.e.x.u.a.l.i.s.m with the "heteralist" head being the most prominent and the (4) LGBT heads being the least heightened do hold the five crowns of s.e.x.i.s.m!

The fruits of all Life is in their sensualisms pleasantries giving rise to many ills of socialisms' diseased constructs!

Did you know the original meaning of the word sodomy was any se.xual act that didn't result in procreation.

This pastor couldn't be more wrong in saying what he said. Him saying we should put gays in a electric fenced in area is cruel he is basically another Hitler, and if he really believed in the bible he would of read that one sin is no different from another, and you should not judge your neighbor. Everyone sins every day no matter how religious you are and the bible also says if you ask for forgiveness that all sins will be forgiven, meaning no matter what sin you commit it will be forgiven, it doesn’t matter if it is as small as cursing or being gay. Another issue I have with all this is that even if someone is gay what affect does that have on your own personal life, it has nothing to do with you, just because you don't believe in it or don't accept it doesn’t mean you can treat gay people wrongly (that's a sin also) they're not animals they are human beings.

    May 23, 2012 at 10:12 pm |

Samantha, you are on the right track toward freeing yourself from the chains that seem to be hurting you. You are actually "holding" the chains that are hurting you, so first: Let go of the chains. Let go of this bitter, bitter concept that everyone sins all the time, every single day. This is not valid. You have been taught that your human nature is evil, that you must atone, repent grovel, apologize for your existence. Nothing could be further from Truth. You are beautiful, as I am beautiful, and we find ourselves in this remarkably beautiful paradise called earth, a blue marble floating in a vast universe. We are not obliged to "figure it out" or "know every detail through making up stories about it. let it be a great mystery, and enjoy the wonder. Whoever taught you to despise Life and yearn for something after death has abused your mind. Let go of the chains that are holding you down, that you yourself are clinging to. Keep your fellow man in mind. Do good works, but never, ever, ever live your life from a sense of guilt. Guilt and worry are a misuse of imagination. Use your imagination and trust the results. That will be your Truth.

The Pastor has lost his mind. But, the only thing I do agree with in this report is. God loves everyone and God is love! The act is a sin in which gay people take part in. Bible: Levotocis:18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination!

Then why don't you stone them to death if you follow the bible so well. But wait I thought that the Old testament wasn't supposed to apply after jesus' "sacrifice" (issues with that as well).

Why do people, such as this pastor, believe that they need to hate on God's behalf? It would seem that if God did indeed hate gays, he could take care of them all by himself. What kind of a God has his people do his dirty work for him? Perhaps that is why the bible advises people not to judge others, because an all-powerful God doesn't need our help in that area. Christ advised his followers to, first, love God, and second, to love your neighbor. Their is nothing in those words that says to spread hate, unless you are like this pastor and believe that spreading hate is love. I wonder if this pastor, and others, love their God in the same way that they love their neighbors.

  9. sugar

Anything in the bible that preaches any sort of hate was put there by man as a political statement from the era. Romans didn't like Spartans so the they demonized that lifestyle. As for Sodom? Re-read it and look carefully. The sin is not the sodomy, it's the ill treatment of guests in general. The act of sodomizing someone became synonymous with acting evilly towards another.

It's the bible, for crying out loud. Why would God tell you to hate on his behalf? If HE wants to hate that's HIS business but WE were put here to LOVE.

    May 23, 2012 at 9:01 pm |
    • onlymyopinion

Thank you Sugar!!!! I SO AGREE WITH YOU! Why WOULD God ask us to hate on his behalf??? I don't know about HIS God, but MY God makes NO mistakes and is an all good and loving God! My God is shaking his head in disgust at that preacher and anyone who backs his ideas!

You said, "Anything in the bible that preaches any sort of hate was put there by man as a political statement from the era."
Everything in the bible was put there by man.

You said, "It's the bible, for crying out loud. Why would God tell you to hate on his behalf?"
Maybe because your god is a vile monster? Your god is depicted as the biggest mass-murderer in the universe. He's said to have wiped out the entire world population, save a few, multiple times. He's said to have created a torture chamber in which he tortures the majority of his creation, for eternity.

No matter how you slice it, christianity is pretty nasty at the core. Some people just decide to gloss over the horrid parts and apply a thin layer of veneer.

      May 23, 2012 at 9:32 pm |
    • Colin

Hey onlymyopinion, think for a moment on what LinCA is saying and see if your view holds up.

Approximately one hundred and ten thousand million (110,000,000,000) people have lived on Earth. Given all those who have, over the centuries, rejected the Christian god, or who have otherwise committed mortal sins, there must be literally thousands of millions of people burning for all eternity in the cosmic oven of hell set up by your all-loving god. Some must have been burning for thousands of years by now.

About 100,000 people die every day. There must be a constant stream of thousands of forlorn souls every day into the one way pit of hell your all-merciful god set up and maintains.

But, far, far worse than sheer overwhelming numbers is the extent of the punishment. There is no way out, no parole, no time off for good behavior. You don’t just burn, you burn for all eternity. Billions of people and thousands of daily new arrivals burning for all eternity!

No criminal justice system in the history of the Human race, even those established by the most despotic of tyrants, comes close to matching the unfathomable barbarity of your “infinitely benevolent” god. I don’t have to kill, I don’t have to steal, hell I don’t even have to litter. All I have to do is have an reasonable, honest and rational disbelieve in the Christian god and it will impose a penalty on me an infinite times worse than the death penalty.

Hitler murdered six million Jews in his concentration camps, but compared to your god, Hitler was a bleeding-hearted wimp. A goose-stepping girlie-man. Your all-caring god not only burns billions more than Hitler, Pol Pot and all other dictators and tyrants added up, he keeps doing so to them for all eternity! I would not wish a bad sunburn on a person simply because they have a different religion to me, let alone fry them for ever.

It is also odd that your all-loving god is also all-knowing and knows which souls will go to hell before they do. He even knows it before they are born, and yet he still creates them. He is worse than a psychopathic teenager than breeds litter after litter of kittens so he can slowly roast them in ovens.

Now, you have three choices. Point out what I got wrong; accept what LinCA says about your God beinga mega-bas.tard, or open your mind to the fact that only humans would come up with such an absurd scenario and accept that there are no gods or devils.

Yep! Jesus was gay. It's in the Bible...

The Gospel of John makes references to the disciple whom Jesus loved (John 13:23, 19:26, 21:7, 20), a phrase which does not occur in the Synoptic Gospels. In the text, this "beloved" disciple is present at the crucifixion of Jesus, with Jesus' mother, Mary.

the interesting thing about you 'Tom' is that you only come on here and critique people's grammar and not their thought ... this isn't even my first language ... so what are you going to do with that, make fun?

You come here, you risk your ego. Too bad if it injures your little ego, tommy.

There are zillions of other sites; if this one bothers you, go elsewhere.

In my opinion, I think anyone who butchers the English language like this preacher has, needs to be put in a cage. But hey... It's okay. We'll drop him food!!! But, it will prevent all of us who absolutely despise listening to people who can't speak the language (the way it was meant to be spoken) from having to tolerate ignorance and stupidity!! He said he's "again it"or "agin it"???? He also says "I tell ya right now..I was disappointed "bad" and "I tell ya "right deer"??? Give me a break...lock him in a cage already!!!

I'm convinced that there is a definite correlation to education level and how religious one is!

There is no doubt, QS. Just read mema's posts.

So those in our community who speak...how do I put it gently...ebonics...they belong in a cage too?

      May 23, 2012 at 7:25 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

No, they belong in a 4th grade classroom with a teacher who doesn't deal with sh!t from 4th graders.

ah, the left's infamous snobbery at its finest ... thank-you for the laugh

"Thank you" isn't hyphenated in this case, you stupid azz.

The content of his sermon is absolutely appalling...but the way in which he delivered it made me puke in my mouth! How can a man who has been chosen to speak Gods word on a sacred alter be so stupid AND inarticulate???

      May 23, 2012 at 7:37 pm |
    • mema

I must have really touched a nerve tom tom....my work is done here. What is truely amazing is how one can have a higher education and yet have no common sense at all. Evolution...where is that proof?! The amount of fossils that would be out there to prove that 'theory' would be astronomical. Even if one considers just those needed for proof of mans evolution. Then there are all those pesky other species one must consider. Humm....

you're too funny ... so is being an elitist snob a membership requirement for the left?

yes, we are quite the evolved and enlightened society ... as abuse number are on the rise, the gap between the have and the have nots grows, the decline of the nuclear family continues ... but no, you sit in your ivory, insulated tower and continue to make ignorant judgments

      May 23, 2012 at 7:42 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

mema, it's "truly". When you've mastered those pesky two-syllable words, let me know. I might not laugh so hard at your attempts to explain evolution.

      Really, honey, go knit something.

And...I agree with you tom tom 100%. However, I think it starts at home. When my children say "good" when they should say "well" I correct them. Once when I was a child..I told my dad "I don't got no lunch money." and he said..2 negatives make a positive...therefore..you DO SO have lunch money and kissed me on the forehead and left for work without giving me lunch money!!! He explained why later..but I went with no lunch that day! However, I never used 2 negatives in a sentence again! It starts at home and should be continued in school.

The dipturd sez "my work is done here".

How disappointing that you are satisfied with an inferior product. That's what is wrong with our educational system: we don't want anyone to 'fail" even if they are, indeed, failing. Like the dipturd.

yeah, too bad there aren't many home nowdays ... i have nothing against education – as long as it doesn't become a tool for bullying ... right, tom? you are no different from that jock who probably terrorized you when you were younger ... you just have found your own forum where you believe you can bully ... btw, doesn' really work for you

      May 23, 2012 at 7:48 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

"There aren't many home nowdays (sic). "Many" what, tom?

"That jock"? What "jock"? I wasn't ever bullied by a "jock". I'm sure that's a mighty disappointment for ya, honey. Do tell me how I'm "bullying" anyone, tom. And then explain why you imagine that your imaginary concept of my "bullying doesn't really work" for me.

      May 23, 2012 at 7:52 pm |
    • tom

i've seen enough of your posts to recognize your attempts at intellctual bullying – for real ... you must see that or in a deep state of denial

i know people like you – who feel like they really have nothing in life, but a forum like this to mock others ... i do feel bad for you because as we all have learned – bullies are truly insecure people

wow ... you are delusional ... you whipped me at what exactly – name calling, grammar? ok, you hold onto those things if you makes you feel better about your life

Sometimes, Tom, Tom, I think you're a tad too harsh, but a lot of times it sure is refreshing to see some direct honesty leveled as moronic christards like this one.. kudos!

'mom' .... seems like the first thing you dropped – when you stopped walking with God was your kindness and compassion

    • QS

All right you two....don't make me come back there! LOL!

There is simply no denying the fact that this "pastor" is a d-bag, and that the people defending him are equally disturbed for agreeing with him. Regardless of whatever religious beliefs one holds to, anybody who can genuinely condone what this barely-person is saying to do with gay people is not right in the head.

      May 23, 2012 at 8:23 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

What are you babbling about now, tom, you idiot? "mom"? I was replying to momo. The auto-correct on the computer must be a new-fangled gadget for ya, Goober.

Look, you can whine all you want, tom, but you won't get it until you figure out that your idea of god isn't the only valid one and that you aren't the only kind of Christian on earth.

You're a pale imitation of the courageous, self-effa cing, humble Christian I know. You are just a little shy of the real thing.

      May 23, 2012 at 8:29 pm |
    • tom

qs ... look back at your first comment ... i would agree that not many should endorse what this 'pastor' said; however, you then made the leap from him to people of faith [oh yeah, based of what study?] ... you do know that obama claims to be a person of faith, right?

Aww, projecting again, are you, tom?

I welcome debate, and I am not at all as you imagine.. Respect is mutual, and as for me, I NEVER advocate a believer changing his mind because of my arguments.. Test me on compassion, kindness, and respect.. Whatever you show me, I'll show you.. Fair?
