With Holocaust book in Farsi, Iranian-American author plugs a historical hole

By Kim Segal, CNN

(CNN) - When he first became interested in learning about the Holocaust in the 1990s, Dr. Ari Babaknia had trouble finding any literature on the subject written in his native tongue, Farsi.

The California-based physician wanted answers to basic questions: Where was the rest of the world as millions were exterminated? And when did the world learn what was happening?

“There’s plenty of books in English on this, and the Farsi-speaking people, I thought - they’re not aware of this,” Babaknia says. “It’s something they should know about.”

So Babaknia, who came to the United States from Iran in 1974, decided to write the book himself, taking time off from his day job as a fertility specialist.

After 15 years of research, four volumes - “Man’s Inhumanity to Man," “America’s Response to the Holocaust,” “The World’s Response to the Holocaust” and “End of the Holocaust and Liberation of the Nazi Camps and the Genocides of the Last 100 Years” - are available for purchase online.

The volumes are self-published through a family foundation, but they're getting serious attention in the Jewish world. The Simon Wiesenthal Center and the David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies in Washington are hosting book launch events for Babaknia.

As a Jew growing up in Iran, where Farsi is the official language, Babaknia and his classmates were taught little about the Holocaust. “We knew that 6 million people died,” Babaknia, 65, remembers. “Anything beyond that we really did not know. I knew only one name: Hitler.”

Knowledge of the Holocaust in Iran today is still limited. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is perhaps the international figure most closely associated with Holocaust denial.

Ahmadinejad is also one of Israel's most outspoken critics. Months after taking office in October 2005, he participated in a lengthy protest called "World Without Zionism,” and the Jewish state is deeply worried about his country's nuclear ambitions.

Deborah Lipstadt, professor for Holocaust studies at Emory University, says she welcomes the publication of Babaknia's books.

“I think a history book in Farsi could be very important,” says Lipstadt, who maintains Emory’s Holocaust Denier on Trial website.

“The problem is in Iran there are very few counter histories,” she says, "counter to the denial that Ahmadinejad puts out that a young person, a student, can go to and look up what do historians say as oppose to what politicians claim.”

More than 110 million people around the world speak the Persian language of Farsi.

Babaknia originally came to the United States to study medicine at John Hopkins University and had no ambition to write books. But he saw a need.

“I took it as a responsibility for myself,” he says. “You have to have resources, you have to have passion, you have to have knowledge in English and Farsi so it wasn’t an easy task, but it was a task that needed to be done.”

Unable to type in Farsi, Babaknia wrote his books out in longhand. He says the need for the collection was reaffirmed when a friend’s son from Iran came to visit him in the United States. The young physician saw Babaknia’s 400-plus research books in his library and asked, “Dr. B, what is Holocaust?

"Is it a medical term?" the visitor asked. "What is it? I haven’t heard of the word.”

Now, Babaknia has some books to give him written in his visitor's native tongue.

The Zionists sacrificed millions of their own people to justify the creation of Israel, and are now doing to the people of the world what they blamed the Nazis for.

Simon Wiesenthal looks like an arab to me anyway. There are about 9 different semetic peoples. Some of you people that are gullible to believe anything they put in front of you. Might want to consider this is nothing but a little cache for you. Also that anti semite dosen't mean anti-Hebrew. I am a Semite even the Syrians are semites for petes sake. I am not a Hebrew. You need to learn a little more before you take things for given. The bomb the camps and the miraculous re-entry into Jerusalem is a little to one fell swoop for my taste. From what I can see there are a lot more than Hebrews in Jerusalem. Once again do a little research before you make yourself look stupid.

Antisemitism DOES NOT mean "hatred of Semites". It means "hatred of Jews". You can discover this interesting fact by checking the meaning of this word in any dictionary. At the same opportunity you can check the meaning of words "Antigua", "antipasto" and "antidote". Amazingly, these words, DO NOT mean hatred of GUA, hatred of pasta and hatred of dote respectively.

You can plug this pal. This is such garbage. Iran is pumping oil in the desert right next to the Americans and the Russians and the Nato wolfpak. The war ought to last about 1 day in my estimation. Cause God ends them quick especially for Israel. Who has miricle 6 and 7 day wars. Hes also a lender in Israel now as Israel has 17 banks and countless lending for homes condos cc boat loans etc with rates worse than ours in many cases. What a farcie.

In my comment below I compared the issue of Muslim superalienation of Western Countries with the superalienation of Germany by Jews before the Third Reich. It is clear that the both issues are not completely comparable, but somewhat distinct.

Nevertheless, I am convinced the solution of the problem had been and would be "God's love in Christ". I don't mean a love, which brushes everything under the carpet, but a love, which is connected with righteousness. For us as Christian it is clear that all religions like Islam, Catholicism, LDS, Watchtowersociety, etc. lead to bigotry and make the human being worse, instead of better. Yet, when Jesus encountered the woman of Samaria (John 4), he treaded her kindly, although she was not ready to give him some water, because of her Samaritanian bigotry. Jesus offered Water of Eternal Life, although she was not ready to give him ordinary water. Jesus was indeed grace and truth and practiced, what he preached.

I said I would welcome Muslims in Germany (not too much), but that does not mean that I would invite them to rule us (the Germans), and that does not mean that I accept Islam as a legitimate religion. On the contrary, although I love my Muslim neighbours, I am convinced that Muhammad was a false prophet and maybe the worst heretic of all history. It could really happen, if I encounter an Imam in Munich that he gets a rollocking off me that he will never forget, and I tell him that Jesus is God's Son or God himself (it is clear that I would never behead an Imam or hurt him, never; I merely fight using words).

For centuries Islam and Catholicism were the most dangerous enemies of the (free) mankind, but I guess that ceases gradually and the Antichrist or the Wicked will get revealed. Hitler was merely a forerunner of the Antichrist, but the real Antichrist will be much more cunning and evil than Hitler.

"I am convinced that Muhammad was a false prophet and maybe the worst heretic of all history"

Muhammad or Paul, who was the worst heretic?
that is the question that should occupy the minds of all people who believe in the semetic religions

      PAUL
      – introduced the idea of God being three-in-one (judaism does not have this, nor did jesus preach this in the synoptic gospels)
      – abolished the laws of judaism, rendering all good deeds irrelevant to ones salvation (again jesus did not preach this in the synoptic gospels)

      MUHAMMAD
      – the monotheism of Islam is closer to the concept of god in judaism and as practiced by jesus in the synoptic gospels
      – shariah is similar to the laws of judaism, good deeds are necessary for salvation

~Prayer doesn’t not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!

The question is ,why did Hitler have so much hate towards Jews or any those non Jews that he exterminated by such Holocaust...?? I wonder whether in future life some one as Hitler appears in America or Europe and decide that such Holocaust should be made to exterminate Muslims and those non Muslims from their countries...? Although there are few signs are coming up about such growing possibilities...!!

      B.
How are you sure there weren't Muslims in Germany then and were roasted with Jews?
Another thing how can you be sure that in future only Muslims will be roasted and not other minorities with them?
Finally why you considered Jews were roasted as chicken while you used the term of roasted as Pigs for Muslims..? Could it be because you are Jew...or have some hatred towards Muslims?
In both causes you accused the white men as being a failure and are accusing to it other nations...so are you saying here you are not white?
How can you be sure only Muslims will be roasted by the so called fascists and not blacks or Asians after all fascists are discriminating all non whites say all the colored nations whether Muslims or non Muslims...!!?

The reason why Muslims will be targeted is because (like the jews):

      – they have some superiority complex that they are "chosen by God"
      – they think they are morally superior to the americans
      – they live in "ghettos" and do not mix with the general americans
      – they marry within their own ghettos
      – they try to copy the americans (like parrots) wear the same clothes, speak the same language
      – but it when it comes to their daughters, they say NO, don't touch or look
      – blacks or latinos have no MORAL SUPERIORITY COMPLEX, they don't think God has chosen them to be superior in morals to the rest of America, nor do blacks and latinos go around bombing americans in the name of God.

Jews of Europe = Exact Copy of Muslims of America
I hope that answers your question

Muneef... The Jews of Europe did not call, plan or try to eliminate other nations or to force their religion on others. The Jews were (and still are) hated because they are different and because they manage to succeed more than the rest of the populace everywhere they are allowed to live. Getting rid of the Jews did not and will not make the Jew-haters any more successful. To the contrary, without the Jewish intelligence, initiative and creativity the countries that forced Jews out are listed pretty low.

Who said I am against Jews don't forget that many Jews left Yemen for the promised land (Israel)... I know how successful they are in crafts and money..beside I know they like to live the way Muslims like to live but I do not see it as a reason to hate all for their way of life or the way they want to bring up their children or protect their daughters... As B here hated them for...!?

    • Thinker23

Muneef... They say that the pants burn on a liar for a reason. I've NEVER said that YOU PERSONALLY hated Jews. Further, if you believe that the Jews of Yemen suddenly left their homes where they've lived for centuries for the "promised country" you should have no troubles to explain how come the Arabs of Gaza DO NOT LEAVE despite the 21 Arab countries in the neighborhood.

Further, there were Muslims in Europe prior and during WWII. Muslims of Albania and former Yugoslavia joined the German Wermacht and even formed Muslim SS Division that were proudly inspected by the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem when he visited his friend and mentor Adolf Hitler. The Nazis did not have any problems with Muslims in North Africa as well where the Arabs cooperated with the German forces during WWII.

Jews of Aden and north Yemen were tempted by the Jews of Israel to immigrate by hook or crook beside that after 1948 area was becoming difficult for them..
As to Muslims as you say joined Germany just remember that the whole area was ruled by the Ottoman empire and during then the Ottoman empire was in good terms with Germany so the whole area had no choice but to be what the Ottoman wanted them to do..

Hitler was blessed by Catholics, meanwhile at the other side other Catholics were blessing the weapons and going to war against catholic hitler... Catholics vs Catholics. And we do not forget the horrendous killings and tortures people had to go through the time of the "holy inquisition"!

    May 26, 2012 at 3:32 pm |

      @Brampt

Hitler was neither a Catholic (although he was baptized Catholic) nor a Protestant, but a Neopagan. Hitler turned apostate from Catholicism in his younger days.

Hitler was a very cunning criminal and he knew that many Germans were religious (Catholic or Evangelic). In public speeches he pretended to be a Christian being concerned for God's matters. Yet, he only wanted to entrap the Germans for his own purposes.

The stab-in-the-back legend plays an important role. It was made-up by the German military, in order to exuse the defeat of WW1. The German military needed a pompous orator of that lie and found him in Hitler. He should pronounce the bad legend of the stab in the back and motivate the Germans for a second war (WW2). If the German military had not pomoted Hitler at first, he had never seized rule in Germany. Hitler was a soldier all through. The German military had saved him, who had no perspective in civilian life. Hitler was ready to tell every lie for his "saviours" (the generals Ludendorff and Hindenburg). Finally he even pretended to be a Christian.

      May 26, 2012 at 4:20 pm |
    • Genghis Khan

hitler was secular perhaps. broadly speaking, people are atheists, secular or religious nuts (like Rainer here). a secular person is someone who makes a distinction between their private life and public life (politics, economics, law etc). such a person does not apply their religious beliefs in public life. often balancing the "sins" committed in public life with extra religiosity in private.

if hitler did not attend the church or was not known to be religious in private, then he can no longer be considered even secular, he would then become non-religious (in the judeo-christian sense).

the fact that he used religion in public speech would simply be down to politics. perhaps he ruled over a pre-dominantly catholic germany and thus had to pay lip service to his const ituents' religion as any astute politician would. perfect example is saddam hussein, who no one in their right mind would call islamic, yet when the american army was standing outside his borders post 9/11, there he was on tv all of a sudden praying to god!

  11. Rainer Braendlein

I am a German. In my young days I watched a lot of West German TV. At least at that time, when the German media still were under US control (they are still?), we got nearly no information about the Holocaust, neither by ARD or ZDF or BR, etc.. The place in Germany, where I grew up is nearby the former borderline to the former DDR (GDR) and hence we could receive DDR television. They informed much more about the Holocaust than the Western Televison of the BRD (FRG).

I still could vomit, when I remember the hipes of naked, dead bodies of gased Jews, which they shoved around on the KZ (concentration camp) campus with big bulldozers (extremly disgusting).

It is also interesting that Dachau (one of the leading German KZ's) is nearly a suburb of famous Munich. It would not be very wrong, if somebody would say "KZ Munich". I live in Munich West and can go to Dachau by bicycle in half a hour. This leads to the suspi-cion that at least the establishment of Munich knew everything about the intentions of the Fuehrer, how he wanted to handle the Jews.

I don't know, how Hitler could infect the whole German establishment with his virus of hatred against the Jews. At least he was a gifted, pompous orator with a big puss (mouth, gob). The issue of anti- Semitism in Germany is certainly multilayered. One of certainly several reasons for Hitler's hatred against the Jews was the impact of Richard Wagner's anti-Jewish operas on him (it is a shame for us in Germany that we still venerate Richard Wagner, which was a mental forerunner of Hitler).

Furthermore we (the Germans) have an idiotic kind of behaviour, which denies the truth about the human nature. At the moment we accept that Germany gets overcrowded by Muslim Turks and Arabs (the industry needs them as human robots) and as soon as somebody criticises that, he gets labeled as a Muslim hater. But there is a discrepancy, whether I am against superalienation or whether I hate a race or certain adherents of a belief. I myself love the Muslims, because I am a Protestant. The true Christian love is independent from the faith of the neighbour. Yet, nevertheless, I critisice the superalienation. It is no joke that sometimes I only meet Muslims during a day in the midst of Bavaria/Germany. Don't I have a right to meet Germans in Germany?

Muslims are welcome in Germany (at least I welcome them), but not too many!

Maybe during the time before the Third Reich the German leaders did not consider that a man wants to meet people of his own race chiefly in his home country. It is just reality that some nationalities cannot live together without tensions. This reality should not be denied or ignored. As a Christian I love my Muslim neighbours, but yet I am aware of the different cultures, which cannot be united and which are opposite.

Germany is so ill. On the one hand at the countryside there are still plenty of people, which are religious, but in the cities they are totally godless. I guess the whole administration is godless and was yet godless before the Third Reich. These godless people ignore the tensions between religions and races and thus finally have to harvest the bad consequences.

I could imagine that a pompous orator like Hitler, which promotes hatred against Turks and Arabs, could be successful again in Germany today. Yet, guilty are also our socalled democratic (godless) rulers, which ignore matters of fact and thus promote the rise of a new dictator. The human nature is not able to unbiased love. Unbiased love is a divine gift, which we don't possess by natural birth.

How to handle the whole thing?

Firstly, we should realize that God loves all people independent from belief and nationality and race. We should do the same. We should ask God for Love or to give us Love, which is a person: Jesus or the Holy Spirit.

Secondly, we should acknowledge that there are natural tensions between certain beliefs, races and nationalities, which can become dangerous, if there is superalienation. Regretably the most people of the Western World are merely nominal Christians and thus will scarcely overcome their natural hatred, which a Christian can overcome by the Holy Spirit.

Get born by Water and Spirit (sacramental baptism) or remember your infant baptism and receive God's love.

No jobs here. Go talk to China where they keep their workers in state-run dorms in the Apple plants so they can wake them up at 2 in the morning to produce a few million new I-pads. Chop-Chop! No fingerprints on those screens, state workers! Unite to achieve! Yes, We Can !!

"....and not get into sharing with you your social programs.."
      Sharing? Interesting choice of word.

"... .specially if you granted to them your nationality...??"
Wait ! Stop ! Oh, shlt, No!

"... if you did not need them as work force you would not have opened your boarders to them..."
We don't need them as a 'work force.' The idiot liberal democrats need them as a 'voter force.' Ever hear the parable of the scorpion who asked a frog to cross the river while he sat on the frog's back?

"Beside that you having got them a cheap labours to make your work force..."
Can Muslims pick lettuce? Would they? They'll have to fight with the existing Latino migrant labor workers who come up from Mexico when they're needed. Uh-oh. There's a big bruhaha in the making. All over produce. How about chickens...can Muslims carve up chickens, or would they insist that the cluckers all be halal? For that matter, is lettuce halal?

" ... due to you pushing more national men into your Armies to give you opportunities to invade other people's countries...?!!"
Invade? I thought that we were fighting Taliban insurgents, building schools, water plants and hospitals. Now Obama wants to 'negotiate' with the Taliban and Karsai wants to put them in the government. Strangely, the indigenous folks over there aren't happy until the schools, water plants and hospitals that we infidels built are blown up. Want to talk about middle eastern natural resources? Most of your countries have plenty. Oil, iron ore, lithium, uranium...the list goes on. But instead of mining it, you all either fight over it or simply give it away to poachers in neighboring countries and then blame the big, bad USA.

Out, damned infidel invaders so we can fight among ourselves without your corrupt interference !

Muneef, you're still full of the same tunnel-visioned, Islamic-biased propagandist bullshlt you've blathered on about for at least the last two years on these blogs. Your country is a mess – have your people finished blowing each other up yet? You have Shiite Muslim rebels in the north, a separatist movement in the south, and good old al-Qaeda militants mixed in for flavor. How on earth was Hadi elected as president unopposed? Maybe he was the only one who wanted the job. How many more assassination attempts will they make on him? Yemen is a shining example of the great strides that your people can make when your left to your own devices. Iran wants a 'device' too – boy that's going to get them far....

Meanwhile we'll all just sit back and wait to see how 'graceful' the Brotherhood is if they think they won't win in Egypt over that damned Mubarek patsy despite what the democratic 'majority' might want. It's amazing you people haven't completely killed off each other yet. I guess that's the reason for the incessant reproduction. Gotta replenish for battle.

      Regards,
      BG

Hi there..you know I am no match to you since your language is better than me and can easily express your self while I find that very hard to do..
I do not know where to start or end but just remember that we are humans and have feelings and rights before being Muslims... Remember it is not fair to be victimized when the doors were opened for you to immigrate and start a new life..
Remember that if those had found peace and prosperity in their own home lands they would not have immigrated to lands where they are discriminated for their color and for their belief...
Remember who brought up , adopted and financed those in Afghanistan to fight the communist tide...because that who did that is the one who spoiled the country to become as it is today...
You mentioned Yemen, yes I agree that our life is a mess here and you should be happy for not living here facing fears of going out or road traveling between cities beside hunger for many children and continous electrical break down's in such very hot and humid areas...we have no power over that as there are many international super powers interference in a war over our lands using our own population to fight their war for them in an aim to control the lands natural resources or as a strategic location, I guess if you are intelligent enough as I became to realize of you, you would know who I mean by those powers if you took the kingdom of Bahrain as an example... You have mentioned some thing about Egyipt where I find my self in no place to judge or comment about but I do understand that wether it is them or us we do not favour any Religious Party to rule our countries since we realize the dangers of that to us and other countries...we are against wars and look forward to peace within our lands and the world so we would not be forced to immigrate where we will be humiliated... We pray to our president that GOD give him strength and faithful men to be able to clean our country from this mess in order we can go on living peacefully again...but just want you to realize that what ever is happening is political issues disguised under religious mask through which they managed to fool some youth to join them thinking it is pure religious and for GOD sake...where never GOD said of it in any of his holy books... They are pure crimes to Humenity... So long friend I do not know what brought me back although I decided to give it up but as I seems I missed to come back for the people I became to know here but as it seems I shouldn't have since seems things have changed and became more bitter since it is the first time you write like this addressing me...any way thanks and bye.

I don't care how much research is done, there are perhaps many reasons why Hitler hated the Jewish people, I don't think we will never learn the whole truth, but one thing is for sure: Hitler's hate for the Jewish people may be blamed on religion, but it was not inspired by God.

Two facts to consider: first, there were (and still are) millions of Jew-haters all over the world. Hitler was not the only one. Second, the vast majority of Jews murdered by the Nazis for being Jewish were NOT RELIGIOUS.

    JEWISH HOLOCAUST
what happens when people become Godless

    – cold heartedly build ovens
    – and start roasting people they think are inferior as if they are cooking chickens

    >>> Watch Out When Godless People Join Together <<<
nothing positive ever comes forth as a result

      Hitler was a Catholic.
Nazi Germany was Catholic and Lutheran Brotherhood.
      Nazis killed atheists.
The Holocaust was a program for the Vatican.
The Vatican has murdered Jews for centuries.
Hitler was glad to kill the "Jesus-killers", to kill in the name of God.

Go stick your head in the oven.

      – Catholics hated jews?
      – But did not roast jews in ovens for centuries

      – With the arrival of atheism in the nineteenth century
      – Catholics turned Godless people
      – turned their hatred of jews into a GHASTLY HORRIBLE jew-roasting factory-like operation

      – Godlessness = turning petty hatreds and feuds into mass murder and world wars

Atheism has been around as long as religions have been around. Even Epicurus questioned the existence of "gods", and that was 300 years BEFORE your cult-mas'ter jesus was born.

Hitler (and the vast majority of his followers) wer Christians. The Nazis managed to reduce the number of Jews in Europe by 70%. iranians are Muslims. The number of Jews in Iran dropped by 85% since the Islamic Revolution. The Arabs (also overwhelmingly Muslim) succeed ir reducing the number of Jews in the Arab counties by 99%.

Hitler and the vast majority of his followers were atheists. Some like Himmler played with ancient Nordic gods but the true national socialist was atheistic.

Thank You for Proving My Point!!!!
      NOTICE PEOPLE HOW ATHEISTS THINK!!
its just numbers to them. The method has no meaning to them. Cold, inhumane, and bloodless > The Nazis managed to reduce the number of Jews in Europe by 70% <> The number of Jews in Iran dropped by 85% since the Islamic Revolution. <<

just a small difference. the Godless nazis did so by roasting the jews in large custom built ovens. the Godly Iranians did the same by letting the jews live. But to the average Atheist, what's the difference, right?? We Godly people can just shake our collective heads at the cold hard logic!

Your exact level of knowledge on Jesus is equal to your exact level of knowledge on religion. Please identify your exact knowledge on various types of abuse and respect within this blog.

Abuse should be easy as it is more than prevalent on this blog by all parties. Respect will be harder as it is noticeably absent most of the time.

Osama... The Nazis did not necessarily want to KILL all Jews. They wanted to GET RID of them. Only when it became clear that the Jews of Europe had nowhere to go systematic extermination of Jews began. If the Jews in the Arab states did not have Israel and the US to go to they would all be killed... and don't forget that it was the Prophet himself who ordered Muslims to KILL EVERY JEW. Was the Prophet AN ATHEIST, in your opinion?

I would really like some concrete information as to what happened during the Holocaust. I have heard that 6 million Jewish people were massacared, I have heard less than that but still a substantial number, and I have heard nowhere near that amount were massacared.

I have heard soap and lamp shades were made from human skin and have heard that is false as well.

I have seen people try to unearth more data about the subject, but when they find something that conflicts with historical beliefs they are shunned. Where can I go to find unaltered history on the subject?

"Why does it have to come down to a war between people of different beliefs?"
Probably because the 'holy books' of the christians, jews, and muslims say that everybody (but themselves) is worthless unholy scum ..........

The decision of someone elses' worth is measured by the person making the decision. The measurement is not a simple one and depends a lot on what the person deems worthy. The books you mention do not make the decision for the person. The person has an ability to determine what influences him or her and what doesn't.

  16. At death atheists believe

How do atheists know what is right and what is wrong? If if their "right" ended up to be wrong? They can't support their views on log so most cling to the band wagon and attack usually just Christians.

Every faith tries to explain the world around us, how it came into existence and how it is maintained. Traditional religions declare that the world was created by someone having the power and knowledge to do it. Atheism declares that the world came into existence all by itself from nothing. It isup to each and every one of us to decide which versions looks more plausible.

      @VoR

My reason for loving humanity as whole has nothing to do with reason or logic and everything to do with compassion and the people found within it.

Why does it have to come down to a war between people of different beliefs? There are many things that cause war.
