Business site raises eyebrows by asking 'Why Do Some People Hate Jews?'

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - The Business Insider, a popular business-focused news website, posted a curious headline on its site: “Why Do Some People Hate Jews?”

Tuesday's headline and accompanying blog post, from Business Insider CEO and Editor-in-Chief Henry Blodget, wound up turning a lot of heads. The avalanche of response and criticism prompted Blodget - a high-profile former Wall Street analyst - to revise his headline and offer explanations/defenses of his post throughout the day.

“Along with many other sites, this site is occasionally visited by people whose mission in life appears to be to express hatred of Jews,” Blodget wrote in his original post. “And hatred of Jews has obviously been an ongoing theme worldwide for centuries.

“What is the source of this animosity? Why does it perpetuate itself? Where did this prejudice come from?”

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

The query drew plenty of tongue wagging from many corners of the Internet. “That’s right, there sure is nowhere better to suss out the reasoning behind one of the greatest attempted genocides of our modern times than in an Internet comments section,” Mediaite jested in a post that seethed disapproval.

“Is this how websites get traffic now?” Mediaite writer Jon Bershad continued. “Should Mediaite’s next slideshow be 'Top 10 Stereotypes About Black People'?"

Later Tuesday, Blodget updated his piece with a new headline, “What Are the Sources of Anti-Semitism?” explaining the initial headline “made a lot of people angry ...  (s)o I changed it.”

Blodget also subbed out the original photo, which he characterized as featuring a pair of “jovial Orthodox Jews,” with a picture of Jewish actress Natalie Portman. He wrote that some readers found the original photo “needlessly provocative.”

By day’s end, Blodget offered his seventh update, saying that he wish he’d never published the piece. “Whatever interesting responses came from the post, I now regret writing it,” Blodget wrote. "I am very sorry to anyone I offended. I sincerely apologize.”

The biggest problem for Jews is not the people that hate them, it's the Muslims. People can be dealt with. People talk, argue and scream and yell. When Muslims are confronted by people there's bloodshed. Look at the news. It's very dangerous being around Muslims. They often times blow up. I have not heard of any Jewish suicide bombers. You may not like Jews but it's not dangerous to be around them. Little Jewish girls don't carry bombs under their clothes and they are not required to be nice to old men. If you hate Jews you are putting yourself in bad company.

If the Jews are so SMART how come we had to wait for the Enlightenment and the 20th century for their FLOURISHING?
A somber perspective: Who gave 5 million Jews squatting in the Israeli ghetto in Palestine among 160+ million people in the surrounding countries, 5 million Jews living in the USA among 300+ million Americans and another 5 million Jews living somewhere in this 7 billion people Earth such a clout? Could you imagine the unmanageable chaos if all the 7 billion people on Earth exerted the same influence and clamor?

So are the Jews dumb or smart? They have managed to be overall successful when they are a small minority of people. This makes them dumb? Please stop eating lead paint chips.

Maybe it's the exclusivity of it. To be honest, I don't know much about them to feel anyway in particular.

      May 30, 2012 at 4:08 pm |
    • Sad but True

      @AverageJoe

Interesting, and because it's exclusive, you don't like being included? I'm not trying to be rude I'm just curious. I know some people hate jews for their arrogance, and others for their exclusivity, all in all, most people operate on false information.

I will ay though, part of Judaism is to be exclusive. To a certain degree, most religions operate the same way. Judaism I guess takes it a step further and wants to make sure it's adherents are very serious about being part of the religion, than say a person who accepts jesus or mohammed to ease their conscious at a certain moment in time.

      May 30, 2012 at 4:13 pm |
    • AverageJoe76

@Sad but True – I figure it's because you cannot be included if you really want to; honestly, I'm ignorant of the process and have no real knowledge of it. I was told you can only be born into it via your mother. I could be wrong. Haven't Google'd it or anything. I don't know where the hate really comes from. Free Masons are probably more secretive, but I don't see much hate against them. I have lots to learn on Earth.

      May 30, 2012 at 4:31 pm |
    • Jen

I love that they are exclusive. I find evangelism the most annoying thing about most religions. I feel the other religions try to convert others because 1) their church is trying to expand their power, and 2) they are insecure about their actual chances of salvation and recruiting more people makes them more secure (ie. All these other people believe it so it must be true). Neither reason is appealing.

      May 30, 2012 at 4:39 pm |
    • Sad but True

      @AverageJoe

It's very possible to convert to judaism and in the conservative and reform you can also be considered jewish on your dads side, however it's tougher than your average conversion, it takes years and you have to really commit to it.

If it weren't for the Jews accepting the Ten Commandments from G-D, there'd be another flood worse than the one during the days of Noah's Ark that would have decimated the globe. No one wanted to accept the word of G-d.
The Edomites asked what's in the Ten Commandments – Thou shall not steal – This isn't for us was the reply. Stealing is our existence. The other nations asked what's in the 10 Commandments – Thou shall not kill. No one except for the Jews accepted the word of G-d Almighty, and thus we are here today, yes still around when mighty once mighty nations like the Romans, Greeks, ancient Egyptians etc. etc. have long ago disappeared. The Jew is immortal.

    • BGko

Didn't God promise in Genesis that a global deluge would never be used again? Biblically, that is the purpose of a rainbow.

      May 30, 2012 at 3:47 pm |
    • ME II

There is no evidence that a global flood ever happened and it likely would have left unmistakable evidence.

      May 30, 2012 at 3:49 pm |
    • FMG

Marc, – originally the 10 commandments had "thou shall not "murder", which is very different from "kill"... mistranslations from the original language abound, which makes for a very different set of commandments as well as the old testament. As for the flood and plagues in the old testament, there have been studies done by credible scientists that have shown some possible reasons for such things. The plagues for example, follow a series of events that to some extent can be shown to be maybe a bit more common over the centuries than you'd think. Single events, like locust or even frogs falling from the sky have happened every so often, including a few instances I recall reading over the past 40 years. Also, people have often taken natural phenomena and made it a supernatural occurrence (in their minds anyway), and others have stretched or simply made up stories to make a point, try to be more impressive to others, and for a host of other reasons. The truth about most things doesn't come from "crowdsourcing" but really chasing down the facts, which can be hard. I'm glad some people try to do that, even if I can't spare the time or money myself.

Racism exists towards every group of people. The brunt of the responsibility rests on those who are the aggressors, however, there exists in every race a group of ignorants that add fuel to the racist fire by either being racists themselves and/or perpetuating stereotypes that add to the racism despite these groups often being a minority within the larger race. As an example, I will use whites (since know one cries when a racist remark is made about white people). Rednecks are a small percentage of whites yet give the rest of us a bad name with their own racism and ignorance. These groups exist within the black community, the Jewish community, the hispanic community, the asian community, etc, etc. While it is not an excuse for racism, and while individuals are responsible for their own beliefs, and while the major responsibility rests on the shoulders of aggressors, a portion of responsibility rests upon these groups that give an image of a bad reputation for the rest of the group. These problems are exacerbated when these groups separate themselves from a largely integrated society, if for no other reason than that they feed misunderstandings and misconceptions, and often because they separate themselves for their own racist beliefs. I suspect this is a contributing factor in anti-semitism as well as in other groups that suffer racism more than others. Most responsibility lays with the aggressors, but often the groups who are crying racism are adding to the problem themselves.

People Hate Jews because they are EZ to pick on. The hater takes every little myth about Jews and ball it up to one big reason why they live in a leaky trailer and can only make minimum wage. Really have you seen any of these so called Aryans. They are not even blue eye nor have blond hair ( unlike myself who is a Jew BTW) I mean I get to hear a lot of crap coming out of these so called master race want-a-bees because they look at me and think that I am one of them. It takes everything I have to keep me from pulling a knife and stabbing the trash in the heart. You know I'm, right the world would be a better place without there neo-nazis and mussies who blame every problem they have because of the Zionist.

  9. Peikovianyi

Most Jews are European. As they assimilated, they lost their religiousity without becoming Christian, because Christians had so often abused them. If Jews are more successful than most people, it's because a secular person has an advantage over a mystic, which would be true of any secular person, of any ethnic background.

    May 30, 2012 at 3:37 pm |
    • magnus

you keep using the word 'mystic' when defining christians. please define. i'm curious

      May 30, 2012 at 3:39 pm |
    • Peikovianyi

Christian medieval theologian Meister Eckhart taught that God doesn't say to do something because it's good, no, it's good because God says to do it. Religious mystics are prime ingredients for a police state and a lack of individuality. Jews have no central religious authority, and haven't had one for hundreds of years. They became modernists, not by choice, but it has its advantages in a modern world.

      May 30, 2012 at 3:45 pm |
    • BGko

All religious beliefs are based in mysticism. Most are allegorical, though religious people generally feel they are literal.

but jews have rabbis and synagogues. that is somewhat centralized. i dont care one way or the other. i was just curious. thank you

      May 30, 2012 at 3:48 pm |
    • Peikovianyi

Jesus was a Rabbi. Rabbis are teachers. Synagogues are assemblies of worshippers. The Jews have not had a priesthood or a temple since the First Century. Therefore the expression two Jews, three opinions. They preserved their religion as an academic exercise, and some theologians have had an influence, but they are not a hierarchical worldwide congregation in the style of the Catholic Church. They believe all people who keep the laws that Noah kept will go to heaven, Jew or not.

Jews are successful people on the whole because they are taught very early how important education is. It is a religion of the Book, hard work, open minds, sharing and succeeding. Most hatred stems from jealousy!

Computers would be at the 1987 standards. World wide economy would be stuck in the 70's era.
Jews are the recepients of far more Nobel prizes and positive contributions to our world, than any other people, especially considering how few they are.
Jews have been around since time immemorial and will continue to stick around for a long while.

If it was easy to convert to Judaism then no one would hate Jews. People could just become one if they wanted to by just saying I am Jewish. Also, if you didn't have to pay to go to Synagogue then more people would go and they would see that the Jews are not torturing people or reciting secret incantations to take over the world. They are just reading from the old testament and it is really boring.

No my logic is if it is easy and free then people would go find out for themselves that Jews are no different than anyone else. But because they put up this wall and make it hard to get to know them and isolate themselves, then people start to make up things about them and resent their aloofness.

The New Testament contains a large amount of Greek philosophy and this gives it more coherence than its religious message would have had. The modern reader accepts it all at face value without understanding this. But Judea was a Greek colony ever since Alexander the Great, then a Roman province, ruled by foreign converts and appeasers. The traditionally devout Jews were split into several denominations by that time. Matthew 24:34 the Christians were trying to convert all of their friends and neighbors because the world was going to end soon. But it hasn't ended yet.

It's due to quantum physics and the universal "Laws of Attraction". For all of their talents and gifts, Jews as a whole have historically been a whining, complaining, and negative bunch. And when you "continually and passionately" focus on what you DON"T want, you attract it to yourself 100% of the time. Focusing on money works, so what not focus on peace instead of war? Why not focus on the great things the world is growing into, and not the idiocy that it is growing out of? Easy fix for those that pay attention.

In most of Europe during the Dark Ages and the Middle Ages, Jews were not allowed to own land. And so they moved into the trades and professions.

It is good that somebody is knocking the Catholic Church down a peg in a time when their hold on absolute power is limited. We all know what happened when they had free reign to do what they wanted and to treat people how they wanted when they were making an offer you couldn't refuse.

I, for one, dislike Israeli politics and what's been done to the Palestinians over the last decade, but I don't dislike Israelis or Jewish Americans for that matter.

Building a walled ghetto to keep in a minority group? Really? Doesn't that remind you of the Warsaw Ghetto just a little? Is it right to oppress others in the same exact way that you were oppressed once?

nobody would create SECURITY GATES if they didn't openly threat kill murder and blow them self up in civilian areas, Germany didn't round up jews in ghettos because they were physically scared of them you moron

      also flipper,

Arabs and Muslims that are Israeli citizens have more rights in Israel as Arabs than in almost all of the middle east.

The answer to two questions tells you all you need to know about who is most responsible for the dim chance of peace:

      1. If Israel were given a TRUE, sincere, guarantee that the Arabs would stop trying to completely eliminate Israel, would they be OK with a Palestinian state? Answer: Yes.

      2. If the Palestinians were given a Palestinian State, would they TRULY, and SINCERELY give up their stated objective of destroying Israel entirely? Answer: obviously No.

What would any sane government do in this situation? Appeasement?

Actually, they did believe at that time that Jews were physically dangerous, traitors, drinking blood, etc. All that crazy stuff the Nazis believed back then.

But thats not the point. Even if theres a few terrorists among the Palestinians, you have no right to stick the entire group all in a walled ghetto, and then proceed to restrict trade and shoot anyone, even little kids, who approach too close to the wall. Thats not right and its not a workable long term solution.

flopflipper – your ghetto analogy is very good. but it will be dismissed by the jews as different so dont bother writing it next time.

Yeah, all Israel did was build the Palestinians and entire infrastructure. Telecommunications, plumbing, electricity, hospitals, transportation, other essential public works.

If Israel gave the Palestinians "their land" today and pulled out all of their resources they happily give them, "Palestine" would crumble inside 6 months.

I don't see Iran or the other Arab nations that seem to hate Israel so much sending over construction foreman, engineers, and communications experts to help build an infrastructure for the Palestinians. Do you?

So, flop, what's your position on my question? Because I can tell you what the Arabs who respond say when I've posited it on other articles: "We shouldn't have to compromise, Israel must be destroyed."

that is because muslims hate their fellow muslims which is why they dont help palenstine. muslims need palenstine to exist to give muslims a brotherhood to focus on a common enemy. other than that, muslims dont care about palenstinians

D – Again the great irony is that the Nazis did the same exact thing in the Warsaw Ghetto. Namely, building some infrastructure, providing some food, etc. Then they proceeded to make propaganda films about what a great life Jews had inside the ghetto.

Sound familiar? Do you see the irony? Is any of this sinking in?

I'm with flopflipper on this one. Stealing land and putting the survivors into a ghetto, while having a theocratic nationalist state and being a bunch of racist bigots is just Nazi all over. You can't escape the parallels. There are too many of them showing Israel is just a Jewish version of Nazi Germany.

i bet you most Jews struggle with your analogy. it is a good analogy and difficult to argue against. however, the jews did not strap bombs on to themselves when they left the ghetto to buy bread. that is the biggest difference is that jews – at least on appearance – want to give Palestine their own land free of walls whereas nazi germany had no such intention.

magnus – Its true. It's a difficult analogy to accept given the political situation. To your second point, I think Israelis are just as divided on this issue as anyone. There are some on the Left who want genuine peace, and some on the Right who would prefer to force Palestinians to emigrate someplace else.

I don't hate Jews, but I certainly hate the frequency with which the term "anti-Semitic" is thrown around. I have no doubt there certainly are anti-Semites out there who have an irrational hatred of Jews and deserve to have the political-social ostracism that entails the denunciation, but the term has been used erroneously interchangeably with anti-Israel, as in, any disagreement with Israel's policies is a result of anti-Semitism. There have even been Jews in East Coast synagogues accused of self-hating anti-Semitism when they disagreed with the policies of Israel.

I think the Jewish community needs to properly re-evaluate what it means to be an anti-Semite so they can reserve the term for those who truly hate Jews and are blinded by bigotry.
