Business site raises eyebrows by asking 'Why Do Some People Hate Jews?'

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - The Business Insider, a popular business-focused news website, posted a curious headline on its site: “Why Do Some People Hate Jews?”

Tuesday's headline and accompanying blog post, from Business Insider CEO and Editor-in-Chief Henry Blodget, wound up turning a lot of heads. The avalanche of response and criticism prompted Blodget - a high-profile former Wall Street analyst - to revise his headline and offer explanations/defenses of his post throughout the day.

“Along with many other sites, this site is occasionally visited by people whose mission in life appears to be to express hatred of Jews,” Blodget wrote in his original post. “And hatred of Jews has obviously been an ongoing theme worldwide for centuries.

“What is the source of this animosity? Why does it perpetuate itself? Where did this prejudice come from?”

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

The query drew plenty of tongue wagging from many corners of the Internet. “That’s right, there sure is nowhere better to suss out the reasoning behind one of the greatest attempted genocides of our modern times than in an Internet comments section,” Mediaite jested in a post that seethed disapproval.

“Is this how websites get traffic now?” Mediaite writer Jon Bershad continued. “Should Mediaite’s next slideshow be 'Top 10 Stereotypes About Black People'?"

Later Tuesday, Blodget updated his piece with a new headline, “What Are the Sources of Anti-Semitism?” explaining the initial headline “made a lot of people angry ...  (s)o I changed it.”

Blodget also subbed out the original photo, which he characterized as featuring a pair of “jovial Orthodox Jews,” with a picture of Jewish actress Natalie Portman. He wrote that some readers found the original photo “needlessly provocative.”

By day’s end, Blodget offered his seventh update, saying that he wish he’d never published the piece. “Whatever interesting responses came from the post, I now regret writing it,” Blodget wrote. "I am very sorry to anyone I offended. I sincerely apologize.”

I hate Jews and hope Iran gets the bomb. I mean, wouldn't that solve the problem – in a "Final Solution" kinda way? It certainly would help. C'mon.

What a hypocrite u are, if u hate jews, why not just bomb Israel and leave Iran Alone. With your statement you actually hate all descendants of Abraham (children of Ismael & Jacob)

If by final solution you mean that your racism really wouldn't matter anymore because you and the rest of humanity would be dead or plunged into a nightmarish future , then you are right. Just imagine a world where a couple of hundred nuclear warheads have laden the atmosphere with radiation and stripped the world of oil. It is a high price to pay for devilish hatred.

@magnus, Didn't the tribal god YHWH put an angel with a flaming sword to guard the Garden of Eden? (Genesis describes a late Iron Age given that the discovery of FIRE and stone implements are NOT mentioned...)

Easy to explain. Some people hate those who are wealthier or more powerful than them. A predominant number of powerful rich seem to be Jewish and therefore the hatred.

Agreed, it boils down to jeaoulsy.

      May 30, 2012 at 4:19 pm |
    • Paul

That is just the most recent excuse. The main reason is that Jews figure prominently in Christian and Islamic texts, and hatred of Jews was/is promoted by those clergy. I don't see Buddhists or Hindus haten' on Jews.

      May 30, 2012 at 4:29 pm |
    • Marc

Agreed Paul, the jeaolusy originated from the clergy and passed on to the masses in speech after speech.

@Marc: Actually no. The Jews came around in the late Iron Age as their Torah describes such an era. But then they are given to flight of fancy.

    May 30, 2012 at 4:15 pm |
    • magnus

how can that be? wasnt adam and eve the first jews? that was about 4500 years ago, putting it in the early bronze age not the late iron age.

      May 30, 2012 at 4:20 pm |
    • Jacques Strappe, World Famous French Ball Juggler

Lets just settle it right here. The origin of the Jewish faith as noted in the Torah is full of crap. The Exodus never happened and Genesis (first three chapters especiallly) were written well after Moses died. The Jews were a tribe of people who shared gods with the Canaanites. Yahweh was one of many gods that they worshipped. It wasn't until after they were enslaved by the Babylonians that the people all started to worship Yahweh exclusively. If you read the Torah with the idea in your mind that the gods worshipped by Abraham and Moses were two different gods, it actually makes a lot more sense. It explains the complete differences in personality.

    • Double Standards Suck

I never grew up hating jews, but have developed a hatred for how their "faith" is held on a pristine pedestal in our society, such that if you criticize it in any way, shape, or fashion, you're labeled an antisemite. Meanwhile, my faith of Christianity is badmouthed freely and openly on a daily basis in my place of work, community, society, media, etc.

People walk around with their yamakas, practice all their sacred traditions, etc. but if I were to do the same thing, I'd be looked upon like a crazy extremist. Orthodox jews are just as conservative (if not more) than the most conservative Christians, yet once again, they get a free pass.

For me, it has nothing to do with money or jealousy, but a complete and utter hypocrisy that our society has when it comes to Judaism (as well as Muslim, Hindu, and any other non-Christian spiritual sect), yet it's okay to bash Christians left and right. You want me to be accepting of your beliefs, but tell me mine are wrong. Well, my friends, with that way of thinking, you're creating and perpetuating more resentment from others. So pat yourself on the back, because you are partially responsible for it.

      May 30, 2012 at 4:56 pm |
  10. magnus

Most eras will eventually evolve to correct our mental mistakes. most people today would not complain about jews at all, just like most people today would never complain that slavery no longer exists. its a state of mind, an evolution. the problem with jews is not jews, but israel. there is a resentment that israel is the source of tension in the world today. as i said, no one in their right mind agrees with the holocaust and it was an opportunity for the world to unite, but then came the existence of israel and we are back to square one.

    May 30, 2012 at 4:12 pm |
    • sbp

And why the problem with Israel vis-a-vis the Palestinians. The ball is in their court. The answer to two questions tells you all you need to know about who is most responsible for the dim chance of peace:

      1. If Israel were given a TRUE, sincere, guarantee that the Arabs would stop trying to completely eliminate Israel, would they be OK with a Palestinian state? Answer: Yes.

      2. If the Palestinians were given a Palestinian State, would they TRULY, and SINCERELY give up their stated objective of destroying Israel entirely? Answer: obviously No.

What would any sane government do in this situation? Appeasement?

The Jew has been around from time immemorial and is immortal. Their 'Chosen' mission, to guide the world to recognize and realize G-d's existence (not to convert) without the use of force.
Their job is incomplete as of yet and has cost them alot of blood throughout the centuries but they will prevail, one day.

People who claim themselves as "The Chosen People" whether they be Jews, Mormons, Baptists, Muslims, Jehovah's Witnesses, and so on and so on, always have problems getting along with their neighbors. They've polarized themselves against their neighbors and trouble follows . . .

    May 30, 2012 at 4:05 pm |
    • Jacques Strappe, World Famous French Ball Juggler

It is so true. I used to be a Jehovah's Witness growing up and in the cars leaving the neighborhoods they'd be talking about which houses they would be taking after God killed all the non-JW's at Armageddon. If you honestly believe you have the true faith and the true religion then it changes the way you look at other people. It gives you so much of a superiority complex.

    • Michael Murphy

The Jewish People didn't say they were the chosen People, God said it. He also called Jerusalem the apple of His Eye, so dont hate the Jewish people for something they had nothing to do with. Oh Ya one more thing God also said He will hate those that hate Jews and Love those that Love Jews, its your choice

      May 30, 2012 at 4:15 pm |
    • magnus

that is so convenient. god chose us to be the highest order people on the planet, and he also said that if you dont love us you will die. blah blah blah. sorry, but we all have limits to this garbage of yours

      May 30, 2012 at 4:16 pm |
    • Jacques Strappe, World Famous French Ball Juggler

But Michael, God went ahead and put the Jews as a people into an unapproved standing in his eyes. That is according to the New Testament.

Of course the Jews would say they were God's people. The Babylonians also said that they were the chosen people of the gods. Same with the Greeks, Romans, etc. Hell, even people in the US say that about America. Doesn't make it true or God real.

I suppose some people resent the fact that anyone who disagrees with anything Israel says or does is branded an anti-Semite. Anyone in DC who doesn't kowtow to AIPAC's agenda can kiss their career goodbye.

Take for example a FOX News story: But investigators within the DEA, INS and FBI have all told Fox News that to pursue ... or even suggest Israeli spying through Comverse is considered career suicide.

I have met few of the Jewish religion that didn't announce that they are Jewish. When I know anyone of a Christian based religion it is never mentioned. In fact you have to know someone either very well or a very long time before you divulged their religion. People of the Jewish faith mention it, in the first five minutes, and repeat it as often as they can. Just sayin.

Move to the bible belt. You will be told the religion, church, and whether their children attend religious schools within 5 minutes of meeting many people; and then asked to provide the same knowledge. Your children will be told their going to hell at the age of four by other four year olds because they don't go to church. Organized religion is organized brainwashing.

Since people are talking about Jews, that they have given so much to the world. I should mention one thing here. The bases of all the modren science, physic and math was laid by Muslims, Al-Gebra, Windmill, find of blood circulation, and more. So the questions is why people hate muslims so much? it because recently they have committed acts of violience just like Jews have done it past and still doing (Killing Jesus, being a trator in world war One by not supporting the country they were living in. List can go on and on.

You spew rubbish. Muslims have given the world death and mayhem since its founding, som 1400 years ago. Converting countries by the sword. Today they bring to the world yet again death and mayhem. They bring misery to their own people. Look around you, putzkop, and see what's going on in the arabic countries. Wake up and smell the coffee.

clearly you are a muslim or arab and your beleif is to assimilate or exit from existence jesus himself or any one claiming to be of similar character so you are rhetorical in your statements. Every one knows that for a peoples population of .01% of the world to be awarded 27% of the nobel prize in science and math clearly isnt an accident and i am obviously not mentioning islam muslim or Arabs but i am jews.

You have got to be kidding! When the towers came down on 9 11 I don't recall seeing anyone in Israel, or any Jews, dancing in the streets or cheering. When you compare the Muslim, who regularly spawn hate, to anyone else in the world today who base their beliefs on peace, you show your bias and ignorance.

    • APatriot

So I guess you never heard about the Mossad van full of Jews dressed like Arabs who were videotaping 9/11 as it happened, then? Not only had they set up their cameras BEFORE the attacks, but they WERE DANCING on the roof of their van as the buildings were hit. The SAME VAN that was later traced by the FBI to a Jewish owned moving company that everyone now knows was a front for Mossad (our very best "friends" in the world).
But you still want to distract everyone and stay focused on Muslims as the enemies of America, right?

Before there were the Ten Commandments there were the 42 Negative Affirmations to Ma'at (The Egyptian Book of the Dead).
Before there was Noah there was Gilgamesh.
Before there was the Tower of Babel there was the Sumerian story of Enmerkar and the Lord of Aratta.
Before there was Job there was Sinuhe the Egyptian.
Before there was Moses there were Hammurabi and Sargon of Akkad.
Before there was Mary there were Cybele, Gaia, Rhea, all the Earth Mothers, etc...
Before there was Jesus of Nazareth there were Osiris, Attis, Bacchus, Dionysus, etc...
And the list goes on. It may have worked centuries ago but isn't it time now to put an end to the Bible as a god's revelation?

Know why I hate jews? because any time you mention anything about them that isn't 100%, they and everyone else will badger and bully someone until they 'change' their opinion to better suit them.

You can badger me all you want about it, but that's why I don't like jews, and your badgering won't get me to change that opinion. Every race on earth has been victimized by some other at some point in history. That part of history is over. Get over it, or it's going to happen again once people finally get tired of hearing about the last time it happened.

I understand what you are trying to say, but basically your opinion is, "I don't like them because when they disagree with me they say something"?

You part about history, the reason why we won't forget is the Holocaust is just one event in a long line of mass murder or jewish people but its only been recent that people have actually cared. Once people forget, it happens again. I would much rather you be annoyed by my constant reminder about it than forget and watch another atrocity take place.

I'd like to state, I'm not trying to change your opinion as much as I just want to make sure you can articulate it better and help me understand.

      May 30, 2012 at 3:59 pm |
    • sfsocla@gmail.com

So should we all just "get over " 9/11"? When atrocities happen, such as the holocost, slavery, wiping out the original inhabitants of the Americas, we should never require anyone affected to just "get over it". It is a part our history. It should always be remembered and discussed so that we do not forget the pain those horrible acts caused entire segments of humanity.

Yes there have been horrible things done to many peoples throughout history but that doesn't make one group hurt any more or less than another. Then again anyone who just "hates" another entire group of people probably isn't worth trying to hold an intelligent conversation with anyway.

So is this Jew Badgering Problem seems to be severely affecting your life. Is it a daily occurrence. Do the 'Jews" knock on your door or call your home while you're trying to eat supper, or when you are going to sleep at night? Do they wake you in the morning with the constant badgering.

What about when you are watching football on Sundays, or go out to dinner, do these Jews harass you their as well? Are there Jews Hiding in your closets and in the attack of your home?

I think you need some serious psychological help. Just make sure that the Phsycologists isn't one of those Jews.

Doesn't affect me, I have no public opinions that anyone would really care to write a news story about. But if you are in the news media, you don't have freedom of speech, you either say what they want you to say, or they go off the deep end and hound you until you do. It's not even called racism with them, they get a special word, 'anti semitism', like racism against them is worse than any other kind of racism, yet it's ok for them to continue to be racist, because that's the culture.

      @t3chsupport,
"yet it's ok for them to continue to be racist, because that's the culture."
Who said racism is okay for them?
