Business site raises eyebrows by asking 'Why Do Some People Hate Jews?'

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - The Business Insider, a popular business-focused news website, posted a curious headline on its site: “Why Do Some People Hate Jews?”

Tuesday's headline and accompanying blog post, from Business Insider CEO and Editor-in-Chief Henry Blodget, wound up turning a lot of heads. The avalanche of response and criticism prompted Blodget - a high-profile former Wall Street analyst - to revise his headline and offer explanations/defenses of his post throughout the day.

“Along with many other sites, this site is occasionally visited by people whose mission in life appears to be to express hatred of Jews,” Blodget wrote in his original post. “And hatred of Jews has obviously been an ongoing theme worldwide for centuries.

“What is the source of this animosity? Why does it perpetuate itself? Where did this prejudice come from?”

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

The query drew plenty of tongue wagging from many corners of the Internet. “That’s right, there sure is nowhere better to suss out the reasoning behind one of the greatest attempted genocides of our modern times than in an Internet comments section,” Mediaite jested in a post that seethed disapproval.

“Is this how websites get traffic now?” Mediaite writer Jon Bershad continued. “Should Mediaite’s next slideshow be 'Top 10 Stereotypes About Black People'?"

Later Tuesday, Blodget updated his piece with a new headline, “What Are the Sources of Anti-Semitism?” explaining the initial headline “made a lot of people angry ...  (s)o I changed it.”

Blodget also subbed out the original photo, which he characterized as featuring a pair of “jovial Orthodox Jews,” with a picture of Jewish actress Natalie Portman. He wrote that some readers found the original photo “needlessly provocative.”

By day’s end, Blodget offered his seventh update, saying that he wish he’d never published the piece. “Whatever interesting responses came from the post, I now regret writing it,” Blodget wrote. "I am very sorry to anyone I offended. I sincerely apologize.”

Every "Jew" who thinks they are "chosen people" or a separate race are by definition racist.
Many orthodox and ultra-orthodox are openly racist, especially in Israel.

There are many racist "Jews" who think they are members of an elite "race" despite all scientific knowledge to the contrary.

Since you were too stupid to think of this yourself, why don't you go fcuk yourself.

Anon, being "Chosen" isn't about genetics. It's suppose to be about spirituality. Yes, some Jews do not behave like the chosen people of God. But unless it directly effects you..get over it.

    • DCTA

You know – none of the Jews I know think of themselves as an 'elite race". We understand that the idea of being the "chosen people" is that we are/were chosen for a very difficult, dangerous task of bring the idea of monotheism to the world. so chosen for a task – perhaps an honor, but not chosen to be lifted up above anyone else.

Sorry so many people are so misinformed.

We don't think we're better than anyone else. Are there racist Jews? Of course. Are there racists Asians? f course. Are there racist Christian? Yes. Are there racist black people? You bet there are. But none of these groups is any more racist thatn the other(s).

Calm yourself little Anon. I am sorry if I mistraken your screwed up thinking for another type of screwed up thinking.
The vast majority of Jewish people are NOT racist.

    • Anon

I was talking to DCTA, who is obviously some sort of pompous dlck.

And my original post was a reply to "kaos" who asked me for proof of any racist "jews" existing, so both of you should not have bothered replying with fcuked up replies that pretended I said something else than what I said.

I will say it again: ANY fcuking person on this planet that thinks they are genetically superior or "chosen by god" as a "race", or who think they are part of a SEPARATE race than the rest of humanity are DE FACTO RACISTS.

And you can visit ANY "Jewish" newspaper website and see blatant racism scattered all over the damn place!
Even the word "Jew" is racist. There is just no such thing as a "Jew", no such thing as a "pure" and "separate" race from the rest of humanity, and no god AT ALL in the FIRST FCUKING PLACE!

Again..calm yourself Anon. Jews are not racist.
Heck...I've been to Israel and can tell you from experience that the state of Israel does not promote racism. Kind of hard to be called racist when arabs are full citizens of the nation, groups like the Druze are given special treamtment for their non-jewish beliefs and when you have arabs in their form of parliment.

I think a little history is useful here. In medieval Europe handling money was considered beneath any participation by Christian Knights. During the Crusades the Christian Monarchy compelled the Jewish people with connections in the middle east to negotiate the transfer of money to support the military efforts and to handle any Ransom demands put on captured Knights. The Jew developed a system that allowed them to do this and ended up in control of a very powerful control over the movement of money. When the Monarchies, especially the French, got into trouble financially they took the easy way out and simply killed off the Jews they owed money to. The whole idea of Jews as the evil bankers got it's start here.

No it didn't, Christs' disgust with money changers working for the Romans to profit off their own people is where it started. Remember, he flipped the tables and chastised them?

      May 30, 2012 at 4:56 pm |
    • DCTA

This is actually for killcourtney. Jesus was a Jew who was preaching at Jews to be more "Jewish" and less "Roman". Thus "Render unto Caesar...". Even then, and still now, we are not supposed to carry money into the sanctuary. he was angry at Jews for breaking their own laws and not only carrying money, but trading money. Jews in that ancient time were still sacrificing animals and one had to have a "pure" animal to do that and you would need to procure that animal from the Temple Priests – they broke the law twice: those animals should only have been sold outside the Temple precincts and secondly, they should not have allowed what was basically a money exchange to exist within the Temple. The problem on the second count is that most people in the area at the time only had access to Roman coinage, but the biblical rules for paying for your "pure" animal only outlined a "price" in what would have been "Hebrew" money. So the people were forced to "exchange".

Here's what's really funny – after t he death of Jesus (not right away but about 100 years) Peter and Paul moved his "church" to be more Roman and Greek. Jesus would not have liked that – his entire mission was to make Jews act more like Jews.

How does respecting privacy make someone liberal? A religion that gets all up in everyone's business, but then seems to get upset at the idea of a big government getting all up in their business seems a little hypocritical.

Maybe the words of Israeli rabbi Yosef have something to do with the less than positive view of Jews:

“Goyim were born only to serve us. Without that, they have no place in the world – only to serve the People of Israel,”
“Why are gentiles needed? They will work, they will plow, they will reap. We will sit like an effendi and eat.

“In Israel, death has no dominion over them... With gentiles, it will be like any person – they need to die, but [God] will give them longevity. Why? Imagine that one’s donkey would die, they’d lose their money.

This is his servant... That’s why he gets a long life, to work well for this Jew,”

That is why gentiles were created,”

Racism is one of the most ignorant and inexplicable conditions plaguing the human race, and the oldest and most absurd forms of racism is antisemitism. One of the things I have noticed about all forms of racism is that it's proponents always think they are being reasonable and that their position is dependable, which proves that they are self deceived. Those who hate Jews usually try to claim they don't hate Jews but only hate Israel. But when you get underneath their flimsy and useless argument you discover that the reason they hate Israel is because it is populated with Jews.

      @shagpal- nope

      May 30, 2012 at 5:02 pm |

The modern concept of race was invented to provide a social hierarchy, giving power to northern Europeans. This concept replaced the preceeding doctrine of the catholic church granting supremacy over "discovered" non-Christian peoples. Once those people began to convert, the concept of race was imposed to justify the status quo.

Logical answer to the question. The Ancient Hebrews were actually Black. If u don't think the Ancient Hebrews were Black, how could've the Pharaoh's Daughter raised Moses as her own child without the Egyptians knowing he was a Hebrew. The answer is logical, the Egyptians & the Hebrews were the same complexion Black. They were different people but they looked just like the neighbors, the Sudanese & the Ethopians (BLACK). All Scholars know the ancient Egyptians were Black People, how about when Moses placed his hand in the burning Bush and the bible states "his hand turned white" aLso Moses married the Queen of Ethopia and therefore was their ruler for about 10 yrs. Jews are hated around the world because scholars know their origin is from the Black Race. Jews spread from Africa & Middle East to Europe, now you can't tell a Jew from a White Man and because of the European Conquest by Alexander The Great, The Greeks, The Romans, French, Italians, English and German Armies into Egypt is the reason why many people only see light or white looking Egyptians

Jews have been hated, hounded and chased since we wrote the Bible. Look at any peoples hunted and you will see our avarice, neurosis and dysfunction as par for the course. Look only to the word scapegoat to see the roll Jews play when things go bad in any nation. We get your hatred, we get your jealousy but in the end, hatred of Jews or any group is human self-hatred. We are the worst in you and the best in you. We are simply human and were here first. Get over it or do not but we can't wait for you to wise us. Gotta run.

There are a plethora of reasons. Jealousy and envy are two good ones. In days gone by up to today coveting thy neighbors goods was a good one. To hate Jews is to hate Christ. He was betrayed with a kiss and the greeting hail Rabbi. His father on earth was a Jewish carpenter. His mother was Jewish. To hate Jews is to hate the holy family. Yet even in his own religion there was discrimination against non Jews. That gave us the parable of the good samaritan. If you sheltered JEWS in Poland or any country ruled by the Nazis you were treated like the Jews. It was better not to get involved. It was none of your business. Stay out of it. We do the same today in Cambodia, Rawanda and Obamas Soviet Protected Syria. THE BEST RULE IN LIFE IS THE AMERICAN RULE. EVEN THOUGH SOMETIMES WE FAIL TO FOLLOW OUR BEST EXAMPLE. THE STRONG MUST PROTECT THE WEAK. ESPECIALLY THE UNBORN. OR TO QUOTE THE KING OF THE JEWS. LOVE THE NEIGHBOR AS THYSELF.

I wonder if he wonders why Israel is an apartheid nation that is ethnically cleansing the native population from Biblical Israel. Maybe he's confusing disagreement with Israeli policies with anti-Semitism, which is what the regime backers use to silence critics.

You realize thats effectively the same as accusing the current US federal government of genocide against native american's. I'm not saying that everyone or every background acted in the most honorable and benevelant fashion they could have one hundred years or one thousand years ago. That doesn't mean those events should be the basis of any modern political agreement.

Second of all, there's no "cleansing" going on in Israel. Don't believe me? Ask an Arab Israeli (different from a Palestinian), you might also learn that the situation on the ground isn't nearly as black and white.

      May 30, 2012 at 4:39 pm |
    • CosmicC

Sorry BD, but I was just there last summer. It was my first time back in over 30 years. Back then I would have agreed with you. Although there were two different systems, Arab Israelis were "developing" at the same rate or faster than Jewish Israelis. That is not what I saw last summer. There is fear and division in ways that did not used to exist.
I believe that Israel should and must exist, but I cannot support the policies of the Israeli government that enforce separate standards of living for Arab Israelis, much less the continual deprivation of civil rights andconfiscation of Palestinian lands in Judea and Samaria (aka the West Bank).
