Business site raises eyebrows by asking 'Why Do Some People Hate Jews?'

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - The Business Insider, a popular business-focused news website, posted a curious headline on its site: “Why Do Some People Hate Jews?”

Tuesday's headline and accompanying blog post, from Business Insider CEO and Editor-in-Chief Henry Blodget, wound up turning a lot of heads. The avalanche of response and criticism prompted Blodget - a high-profile former Wall Street analyst - to revise his headline and offer explanations/defenses of his post throughout the day.

“Along with many other sites, this site is occasionally visited by people whose mission in life appears to be to express hatred of Jews,” Blodget wrote in his original post. “And hatred of Jews has obviously been an ongoing theme worldwide for centuries.

“What is the source of this animosity? Why does it perpetuate itself? Where did this prejudice come from?”

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

The query drew plenty of tongue wagging from many corners of the Internet. “That’s right, there sure is nowhere better to suss out the reasoning behind one of the greatest attempted genocides of our modern times than in an Internet comments section,” Mediaite jested in a post that seethed disapproval.

“Is this how websites get traffic now?” Mediaite writer Jon Bershad continued. “Should Mediaite’s next slideshow be 'Top 10 Stereotypes About Black People'?"

Later Tuesday, Blodget updated his piece with a new headline, “What Are the Sources of Anti-Semitism?” explaining the initial headline “made a lot of people angry ...  (s)o I changed it.”

Blodget also subbed out the original photo, which he characterized as featuring a pair of “jovial Orthodox Jews,” with a picture of Jewish actress Natalie Portman. He wrote that some readers found the original photo “needlessly provocative.”

By day’s end, Blodget offered his seventh update, saying that he wish he’d never published the piece. “Whatever interesting responses came from the post, I now regret writing it,” Blodget wrote. "I am very sorry to anyone I offended. I sincerely apologize.”

Jews are disliked by so many because of one thing: twenty centuries of vile Christian propaganda, slander, assault and oppression, led by the Catholic church and the founder of Protestantism, Martin Luther. The Jews' crime? Their insistence on being able to identify their own messiah, and not some fraud imposed upon them by Christians.

Not to judge, but that could and is offensive talk to Christians, if they believe he is the messiah, than who's to judge?

    @Liltman:
    You got this totally wrong!

    1. Orthodox Jews only follow rules set in the Torah (the Old Testimony).
    2. They all live by and abide to all government and local laws.
    3. Large families are also prescribed by Torah and certainly not to replace people killed during the Holocaust.

Such misconceptions as yours brings and fires up the anti-semitism.

    • Darwi

Mikhail, you attempt to whitewash the Orthodox Jews fails because they do indeed refuse to follow secular laws in many instances, like when they abuse their children and wives they terrorize their families so that no one goes to the police.
Being Orthodox, they use rabbinical laws as justification for committing more crimes.
Don't whitewash the criminals in their midst. They are not perfect. They are only human.
Their religion is bs just like all the other religions. Don't bother trying to cover them up as one people. They aren't.

I think the reason why some people hate jews is because they think they are owed something.

Also people are tired of hearing about the holocaust. They are not the only people who have suffered but not everyone celebrates it every year. Enough is enough.

Yeah the Holocaust was no big deal. Moron.
Sure, other groups suffered but nobody suffered like the Jewish people. Just look at Lithuania. Almost the entire Jewish population was wiped out. Poland, so many wiped out and yet you think it isn't a big deal. I guess we should stop talking about WW2 in general then. The Civil War? Who cares? Things like the Holocaust serve as an important reminder of what the power of hate can accomplish. We should never forget.

Anti-Semite. Because to say that people should get over having 6,000,000 of their people murdered a mere 67-73 years ago, where survivors STILL exists, shows an incredible insensitivity, and is HIGHLY suspect. Slavery ended less than 150 years ago, and Americans should STILL be highly sensitive to it, in no small part because in our dislike and oppression for Africans, we created an underclass, and via poverty and crime and disenfranchisment, it's now biting us all in the rear. We should have put every freed slave through intense education and brought 'em up to speed and involved them in the economic process as entrpreneurs, small business owners, and members of the corporate world. Guaranteed, we'd be saving tax dollars now. ANYWAY, Anna, admit it, you're an anti-Semite. Be brave and stand up for what you believe, even if it is completely detached from reality.

      May 30, 2012 at 1:42 pm |
    • Mass Debater

"What group does your description fail to match?"

"scholars maintain that the definition of the Holocaust should also include the Nazis' genocide of millions of people in other groups, including Romani, Soviet prisoners of war, Polish and Soviet civilians, ho.mose.xuals, people with disabilities, Jehovah's Witnesses and other political and religious opponents, which occurred regardless of whether they were of German or non-German ethnic origin. Using this definition, the total number of Holocaust victims is between 11 million and 17 million people."

The Jews I know don't act like they are owed anything. They work their a$$'s off and use their $$ wisely. Example to the rest of us. . .

      May 30, 2012 at 1:47 pm |
    • denman838

Anna, maybe YOU'RE one of those trolls who are tired of hearing about the Holocaust. Most other people are not. Most other people welcome the reminder of man's potential inhumanity to man. The Nazis exterminated between six and eight MILLION Jews. The Jews say "Never Forget", and Jew and non-Jew alike should take that to heart. I can't believe you'd write something so ridiculous. You must be a functioning imbecile.

      May 30, 2012 at 1:55 pm |
    • magnus

perhaps she was trying to say is that an equal number of non-jews died in the holocaust but they are not discussed in history as much. also, the way she presented her argument was flawed, but the fact of the matter is that 5 million non-jews died in the holocaust.

The internet has allowed the bigoted cowards to vent their fear and hatred anonymously. That's all. From time to time, you get a person with some public image, like this blogger, testing the waters to see how acceptable that bigotry is. You only need to look at Rush Limbaugh's success to realize there are an awful lot of bigots in our wonderful country. They hate Jews/Catholics/Mormons/Immigrants/Liberals/etc because all their shortcomings can't be their own fault. Cowards must blame others because they lack the courage to face their own shortcomings. Old story, new venue.

    • Jacques Strappe, World Famous French Ball Juggler

Ummm the blogger was not trying to support anti-semitism. He was only trying to detail where the roots might be found. What is wrong with that?

      May 30, 2012 at 1:37 pm |
    • Juan-Miguel Vega

I'm no fan of Rush in general, but it seems to me that the only people he "hates" are the people who think everybody owes them a living. In Miami, we call them the Ugimme tribe. This is not racial; any ethnic group can belong to the Ugimmes. If there is any group that it's still okay to denigrate, this would be the one.

      May 30, 2012 at 1:42 pm |

Thank you, Alicia. I will sit with you in the non-racist section, if that's okay with you....

I think the main problem with this discussion is that the term "Jews" can refer to their varied culture, their ethnic or family groupings, the Judaic religion, or can even refer in a general way towards the nation of Israel.

So when people start throwing stuff, it gets confusing rather quickly and I think it's a pain to always be asking people to clarify what they actually mean when they say "Jews". It makes for some really silly arguments, too.

Israeli citizens have free universal health care...US citizens do not
Israeli citizens have free secondary education...US citizens do not

Yet through the non-stop efforts of Jewish lobbying, US citizens are required to send billions of tax-payer dollars to Israel (each year forevermore) to subsidize their lifestyle.

    This I resent.

    May 30, 2012 at 1:23 pm |
    • rad

I understand your point – you mean college instead of "secondary education" (high school) but its worth correcting. Here is the wikipedia definition of "secondary education" –
Secondary education is the stage of education following primary education. Except in countries where only primary or basic education is compulsory, secondary education includes the final stage of compulsory education and in many countries it is entirely compulsory. The next stage of education is usually college or university.

      May 30, 2012 at 1:33 pm |
    • Marc

You should resent even more the billions of dollars that go to countrie sthat despise us and our way of life. Here are some, Pakistan, Egypt, Lebanon, Palestine, to name a few. With Israel we have a true ally unlike many other countries that receive our largesse.

      May 30, 2012 at 1:35 pm |
    • UhHuh4356

Of course, if Israel were the only country in the world where we send either 1) direct aid and/or 2) provide a military presence and which had free universal health care and/or free or low cost secondary education, you might actually be making a point about there being something unique in the US/Israeli relationship, as opposed to, the $100s of billions we're sending around the world to hundreds of other countries which provide the same benefits.

I should further state that despite this never ending largesse at the expense of the US tax-payer, Israel (our dear ally) continues to wage aggressive espionage against the US, has re-exported US weapons technology to China and the list goes on.

But come on now, the European Jews ( Ashkenazim) who dominate Judaism today are far too European looking, mixed to almost non-existent original middle eastern/ Israelite blood, perhaps even Khazar ( people of Russian Steppes) converts mixed with Poles, Germans, Hungarians, Lithuanian, Russian etc. etc. in countries they settled in two millennium. Even the Sephardi are closer in bllod to various middle eastern countries eg Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Iran etc. The bottom line is these people are occupying a country invented only a generation or two ago forcibly driving the original people living there for centuries if not ever since the times of Christ. Truly an "Invented People". And yet all they have is this " God Given Right to Claim Israel as their homeland. What injustice. And the problem is the mainstream media, and the west just buys into this travesty, no question asked.

There is no one faith that can claim Israel to itself alone.

This part of the world has traded between the Jewish, the Muslim and Christian faiths for years.

All hold it as being the center of their religion`s and have had a permanent presence there.

The creation of the modern Jewish state was in response to the attempted eradication of these people by Hitler and his allies including the many that assisted with this in the European and Middle Eastern areas.

People have hated Jews for milleinia because they were a convenient minority on whom to blame societies problems. This was exacerbated by two things: (1) they remained a minority because Judaism is not an evangelical faith that tries to convert people, and (2) there is a huge emphasis on education that, when permitted to them, resulted in a fairly sucessful minority that others were jealous of.

Pretty dumb comment, but that's expected. If Jews are an invented people than Christ who was jewish is an invention too, according to your dumb logic.

Was the Hebrew Bible only written a generation or two ago? It is based in Israel, the country you say is only a generation or two old. Ancient Jerusalem is the same place as modern Jerusalem. Yes, the Nation of Israel was forced off the land many centuries ago, but after no nation was willing to offer a haven when the NAZIs came up with the Final Solution, it was deemed necessary by most nations of the world to have a country of refuge, a homeland where no one could exclude the Jews.

      May 30, 2012 at 1:38 pm |
    • sp2011

This is in Response to Marc. True, Christ was a Jew. This is not a reference to original Jews living in what is now Israel over 2 thousand years. The invented people are the Jews who have been coming back in droves with European features and genes from Europe and many other countries, as far away as even India, China and Ethiopia who claim Israel as their natural country or birthright with no connection other than " Their Religion". This fact is totally ignored.

This is such a misunderstood argument. This had as much to do with the Ottoman Empire's fall as the Nazi's. There was never a region called Palestine until Britain took over the region after WWI. Britain's Empire was coming to a close but they desired the territory for economic purposes (Oil was just being discovered here and found to be useful). The hatred toward the Jews was a European thing. The issue of Jews not being evangelical was true. They were very exclusive, and much like any foreign culture in a given country, they took care of their own. They would loan money to their kind without interest, they would take others of their own under their wings as apprentices in their trades. Nothing any other culture would not do... But during a time of economic downturn this was seen as an exclusivist practive, racist in motive, and elitist in nature. The hatred built, and WWII showed that the "locals" did not tolerate this. When the allies won the war, they had nowhere to place the oppressed Jews, and they chose to slowly relocate them to the region of palestine. The locals there were oppressed by the turks, only to be oppressed by the brits then the Jews that moved there. This was nothing new. The US did not want to import millions of poor civilians, despite their educations. There was really no other option. When a bird gets into the lion cage and gets attacked, you remove the bird and place it in a peaceful environment. Anyways, hate all you want this was about world war two.

Historically speaking, they did build their nation in Israel, which includes Jerusalem. The land was, Historically speaking, not claimed by anyone, and they took it... and when the Romans conquered Israel, they kicked them out, and later, the Arabs came in. That's the problem... Jews were kicked out of their homeland, and the Arabs took it over, after WWII, the Europeans, not rightly, demanded the Arabs leave, and give it up to the rightful owners, Jews. What the Allies did was wrong, but what the Arabs say it's their rightful home, than no... it's the Jews built land. IT IS THEIR HOMELAND! No offense...

I only have one issue with your arguement. The bible isn't the only account of the Israelites living in Israel in ancient times. So they are not an invented people. One other comment There needs to be a distinction between Israelis and Jews. Israelis live in the country of Israel they are Jews Christians Muslims and even Aethists. Jews are people who follow Judaism. They could be Israelis Europeans, American or even Arabic.

    • sp2011

You are missing the point. I am not saying that Jews never lived in Israel over thousands of years and that Christ was a Jew etc. But just that having spread out all over the world over two thousand years whether by choice or by force has diluted their blood to such an extent that they resemble people they migrated or were forced to live in for thousand years or two. Take Jews from India, they look Indian. Take Jews from China. They look Chinese. Look at all these European Jews. They were singles out by the Nazis ( sadly and unfortunately I might add) with a star of David to identify and distinguish them from the remainder of the European peoples, Germans included, whom they resembled. It is not rocket science to believe that many ( most) Jews of the present have very little in the way of ancestry to do with the original indigenous Israelite of the Middle East.

I think the Jews are really special. There is something about the water they've been drinking over the past couple thousand years maybe?
Just look at this list. Dirac, Bohr, Einstein, Feynman, Witten, Zuckerberg, Page, Brin.
What I can't stand is Israel using it Washington influence to twist America's arm and make it do its bidding. That's what is maddening.

Did you just group the creator of Facebook with the creator of Relativity or the Atomic model? For real? There must be some other Zukerburg you were talking about right?

Are you sure the situation is not exactly opposite? I have always thought that was United States controlling Israel and rewarding it for supporting US policies in Middle East and sharing intelligence, and air space, and land and Navy bases, and providing logistics, etc, etc...

I think this is a relevant question, b/c I have never had a problem with a Jewish person. I grew up in a Jewish neighborhood, and many Jewish people still live nearby, although my neighborhood has changed after the '68 riots. I have lots of Jewish friends, I never really understood all this animosity...

Anyone who hates ALL Jews is an Ignoranus (Ignorant and an azzhole). There are different segments of the Jewish faith. Ultra-Orthodox, Orthodox, Conservative, Reformed. Most gentiles do not work with, go to school with, or socialize with Ultra-Orthodox and Orthodox Jews. They are an insular people who refuse to be "Westerinzed" and stay away from others (including Conservative and Reformed Jews) They follow ancient and modern rules laid out by Rabbi's who are trying desperately to maintain control of their flock. The men spend their lives studying the Torah at various Yeshivas and Temples. They believe that Jews are superior by their very nature and Gentiles are intrinsically evil (Rabbi Grama, Lakewood, NJ Beth Megrish Godova Yeshiva) They do not believe that civil laws apply to them as long as they are trying to preserve what they perceive as their true religion. They have a large family in an attempt to replace the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust. Conservative and Reformed Jews do not follow the severe rules of the Rabbi's. They practice their religion in various ways that they believe are valid. They usually are self employed as merchants, attorneys, doctors, accountants etc because they would not be hired by American businesses when they immigrated to our country. They were not allowed to attend Ivy League schools. (Yale only allowed 4 Jews per year in the 50's) To make a living, they had to do it on their own. Having gone to school with, worked with and befriended many "regular" Jews I would say that some I liked, some I tolerated, some I disliked just as I did with every other person of whatever race or religion I associated with. I believe that Anti-Semitism primarily stems from the Ultra-Orthodox and Orthodox communities because of their appearance, behavior, insular lifestyle, and abuse of public assistance etc. Those who dislike Jews because they are successful are idiots.

And another thing for all the paranoid nut jobs out there. I know it won't do any good, you being paranoid nut jobs and all, but it makes me feel better. I'm an atheist, but grew up Christian-ish with a tree in Dec and a basket in the Spring. I send Christmas presents to my nieces and nephews, my mom, friends and other family. My wife and kids are Jewish. I can tell you with some degree of certainty: There are NO JEWISH CONSPIRACIES! I know, because she would be at the meetings (she tends to be in the middle of everything). And if Jews are so great with money, why the hell are we always broke? You would think she would let me in on the secret just so we could afford cable, if nothing else. ps- The best part of being married into the Tribe: the food is freakin' awesome (except for ghefilte fish) and there's always a ton of it! If you have all this energy available to be ticked off at an entire religion, why not use it instead for something positive? Wait, forgot I was talking to paranoid nut jobs.

Syd.... Here's what I don't understand... There are no reasons to hate Jews....but you married a Jewish woman and you didn't START to hate Jews? I mean the nagging and kvetching and the "not tonight I have a headache" or "the ceiling needs painting" while you're doing it didn't do it? LOL

It shows that racism is still alive and well. He should have had no shame in posting it.
