Church videos with harsh words for gays go viral online

By Richard Allen Greene and Dan Gilgoff, CNN

First it was a Christian pastor in North Carolina who told his congregation on Mother's Day that the way "to get rid of all the lesbians and queers" was to put them behind an electric fence and wait for them to die out.

That video went viral, fetching more than a million views on YouTube.

On Sunday, Pastor Curtis Knapp of Kansas preached that the government should kill homosexuals, in another videotaped sermon that drew lots of online attention.

"They won't, but they should," Knapp said, according to a recording of his sermon posted online.

Since that sermon, another church video with harsh words for gays has caught fire online. This one shows a young boy singing an anti-gay song while the congregation cheers him on in what appears to be a church in Indiana.

"I know the Bible’s right, somebody’s wrong,” the boy sings near the pulpit of a church. “Ain't no homos gonna make it to heaven."

As the boy repeats the line “Ain't no homos gonna make it to heaven," congregants from the pews rise and cheer.

The video, which was anonymously posted online and has received more than 300,000 views on YouTube, appears to show a service at the Apostolic Truth Tabernacle Church in Greensburg, Indiana.

Calls to the church this week went to voicemail, with an automatic message saying the mailbox is full. But a message posted on the church’s website on Wednesday appears to address the controversy, offering no apology for the video.

“The Pastor and members of Apostolic Truth Tabernacle do not condone, teach, or practice hate of any person for any reason. We believe and hope that every person can find true Bible salvation and the mercy and grace of God in their lives,” the statement says.

“We are a strong advocate of the family unit according to the teachings and precepts found in the Holy Bible,” said the statement, which did not explicitly refer to the video or mention homosexuality. “We believe the Holy Bible is the Divinely-inspired Word of God and we will continue to uphold and preach that which is found in scripture.”

The viral videos have drawn criticism from gay and lesbian groups and their allies.

Charles Worley’s sermon at Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden, North Carolina, sparked a protest that drew more than 1,500 people last weekend.

In Kansas, Knapp's voicemail at the New Hope Baptist Church in Seneca was filled with messages saying "things you don't want your kids to hear," he told CNN affiliate KTKA.

An official with the Kansas-Nebraska Convention of Southern Baptists issued a statement to CNN on Thursday saying that Knapp’s church had left the Southern Baptist fold in 2010.

“Obviously, he has taken a radical and unbiblical stand in regards to homosexuality,” said Tim Boyd, communications director for the convention.

“We look at homosexuals as we look at all sinners,” his statement said. “God loves them. Christ died for them. The Gospel calls them to repentance and salvation. Therefore, we as Christ-followers should hate the sin and love the sinner.”

But Knapp is not backing away from his comments.

"We punish pedophilia. We punish incest. We punish polygamy and various things. It's only homosexuality that is lifted out as an exemption," he said.

He cited the Biblical verse Leviticus 20:13: "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act. They shall surely be put to death."

But he said gay people had nothing to worry about from the government or from him.

"I don't believe I should lay a finger against them," said Knapp, of New Hope Baptist Church in Seneca, Kansas. "My hope is for their salvation, not for their death."

Preaching against homosexuality the same day, another pastor appeared to wrestle with how conservative Christians should respond to proposals that people should literally mete out biblical punishments.

"What about this guy down in North Carolina said build a big prison, a big fence and put them all in there and let them die out?" Dennis Leatherman asked in a sermon at the Mountain Lake Independent Baptist Church in Maryland.

"Listen, I don't know that fellow. As far as I can tell, he seems like a decent guy, but he is dead wrong on that. That is not the scriptural response," Leatherman said in his sermon "Homosexuality & the Bible," according to a cached version of the transcript posted online.

The audio of the sermon does not appear on his church's website.

In the sermon, he floats the idea of killing homosexuals, whom he refers to as sodomites, then backs away from it.

"There is a danger of reacting in the flesh, of responding not in a scriptural, spiritual way, but in a fleshly way. Kill them all. Right? I will be very honest with you. My flesh kind of likes that idea," Leatherman said.

"But it grieves the Holy Spirit. It violates Scripture. It is wrong," he added immediately.

The Southern Baptist Convention distanced itself from Worley's remarks.

The nation's largest Baptist group said Providence Road Baptist in Maiden is not affiliated with its 16 million-member denomination and condemned the comments.

But the influential head of the giant movement's seminary does argue that homosexuality "is the most pressing moral question of our times."

In a comment piece for the Belief Blog in the wake of Worley's sermon, R. Albert Mohler Jr. dismissed critics who say conservative Christians focus on homosexuality while ignoring other things the Bible prohibits.

He contends that laws about keeping kosher, for example, do not apply to Christians, while commandments about homosexuality do.

"When it comes to homosexuality, the Bible's teaching is consistent, pervasive, uniform and set within a larger context of law and Gospel," he wrote.

"Christians who are seriously committed to the authority of the Bible have no choice but to affirm all that the Bible teaches, including its condemnation of homosexuality," he said.

A member of Worley's 300-member church defended him in an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper.

"Of course he would never want that to be done," Stacey Pritchard said of the proposal to put homosexuals behind a fence and leave them there to die out. "But I agree with what the sermon was and what it was about."

CNN Belief Blog co-editor Eric Marrapodi contributed to this report.

Leave Gays alone. They will slowly die out since they can't reproduce. Only those who cooperate with the nature will survive and continue their kindred.

The percentage of gay people relative to the general population has remained constant for ages. Unless str8 people stop procreating altogether, it will remain so for ages to come. You don't read much, do you ?

What's interesting is that this man is truly living by the bible. He's saying we should do what the bible says. He's a true believer.
Luckily not all christians are true believers, imagine how the world would really be if all christians literally followed the bible. People would be stoned in the streets.Luckily most christians are just delusional psychopaths afraid to face the true nature of reality.

  4. Kindness

    Kindness
    For you.
A thought to consider without an ego response

Accept Jesus christ as your lord and saviour. You never know how soon is too late. Transcend the worldly illusion of enslavement.
    The world denounces truth....

Accepting Jesus Christ (for me) resulted in something like seeng a new colour. You will see it .....but will not be able to clearly explain it to anyone else..... Its meant to be that way to transend any selfism within you.

Also... much the world arranges "surrounding dark matter into something to be debated" in such a way that protects/inflates the ego.

The key is be present and transcend our own desire to physically see evidence. We don't know anyways by defending our own perception of dark matter.

Currently.... most of us are constructing our own path that suits our sin lifestyle. Were all sinners. Knowing that we are is often an issue. But both christians and non are sinners.

We don't like to Let go and let god. We want control to some degree. This is what Jesus asks us to do. "Follow me".
It's the hardest thing to do... but is done by letting the truth of scripture lead you (redemptive revelation)... as I said .

Try reading corinthians and see if it makes sense to you. Try it without a pre conceived notion of it being a fairy tale.
    See the truth...
do we do what it says in todays society... is it relevant... so many have not recently read and only hinge their philosophy on what they have heard from som other person...which may have been full of arogance pride or vanity..

Look closely at the economy ponzi, look at how society idolizes Lust , greed , envy, sloth, pride of life, desire for knowledge, desire for power, desire for revencge, gluttony with food etc .

    Trancsend the temporal world.

Just think if you can find any truth you can take with you ....in any of these things. When you die your riches go to someone who will spend away your life..... You will be forgotten.... history will repeat iteslf.... the greatest minds knowledge fade or are eventually plagerzed..... your good deeds will be forgotten and only give you a fleeting temporary reward . your learned teachings are forgotten or mutated..... your gold is transfered back to the rullers that rule you through deception. Your grave will grow over . This is truth .

Trancsend your egoism and free yourself from this dominion of satan. Understand you are a sinner and part of the collective problem of this worldly matrix... Repent.... Repent means knowing (to change) The Holy spirit (within) will convict you beyond what you think you can do by yourself. Grace is given to those who renounce the world. That are" in" the world but not "of " the world.

Evidence follows faith. Faith does not follow evidence..... Faith above reason in Jesus Christ.

Faith comes by Reading or Hearing the word of god from the bible . Ask Jesus in faith for dicernment and start reading the new testament... You will be shocked when you lay down your preconceived notions and ....see and hear truth ... see how christ sets an example ... feel the truth....

    Read Ecclesiastes. Read corinthians.

You cant trancend your own egoism by adapting a world philosophy to suit your needs. Seek the truth in Christ.

Sell all your cleverness and purchase true bewilderment. You don't get what you want ....you get what you are in christ.

I promise this has been the truth for me. In Jesus christ .

Think of what you really have to lose. ...your ego?

Break the Matrix of illusion that holds your senses captive.

once you do . you too will have the wisdom of God that comes only through the Holy Spirit. Saved By grace through Faith. Just like seeing a new colour.... can't explain it to a transient caught in the matrix of worldly deception.
You will also see how the world suppresses this information and distorts it

You're all smart people . I tell the truth. Its hard to think out of the box when earthly thinking is the box.
I'ts a personal free experience you can do it free anytime . Don't wait till you are about to die.. START PUTTING YOUR TREASURES WHERE THEY REALLY MATTER >
Its awsome and It's just between you and Jesus

    my testimony

    Romans 10:9

"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."

Religion is the problem. Solution, remove all government funding of these hate groups. Tax the church! Let's see how many of these horrid organizations can survive after being taxed for their hate. Make it one of those taxes like on cigarettes. A luxury tax. Wanna smoke? Pay a tax to pay for cancer. Wanna attend church? Pay a tax to pay for all the murder and mayhem that it causes. Should be a very steep tax in my opinion.

I agree with you! They can promote hate all over the places, they should be responsible for a lot of hate crimes out there. The government have to pay a lot of money on the prison and jail system guess who are there? all those people that have committed hate crimes too. Therefore, the promoters should pay taxes too.

Somewhere in all this there's no mercy, no grace, and no forgivness. What a shame, when Jesus came to die for ALL our sins. If we as Christians can not extend the same as our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, then we are of the worst of sinners. because we know the free gift of salvation. We have forgotten who saved us, out of our sinful mess. Sin is Sin, but God!!! forgive us of our sins, loves us. We were created in His image, to walk in His ways, to show His love, and His mercy!! God So loved the world that He would send His only begotten Son, not to condemn it, but to save it.

Today's pastors have the spirit of the anti-christ, they do not hear the voice of the Chief Shepherd. Luke 9:51-16 "And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem. And when his disciples James and John saw [this], they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save. And they went to another village" This false teachers are wicked men. The words of the wicked to lie in wait for blood: but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.

"Knapp is not backing away from his comments. 'We punish pedophilia. We punish incest. We punish polygamy and various things. It's only [gay relations] that is lifted out as an exemption,' he said."

Well, not entirely. The Bible also prescribes punishment for extramarital relations, too, and we don't punish that - not even adultery. But Knapp is right that Christians should be consistent: The only justified intimacy is that which occurs between 1-man, 1-woman marriage. ALL other intimacy should be outlawed and punished. That's the biblical standard.

We, TRUE believers have lesser tendencies to commit murders and other unpardonable sins than atheists because, we believe that aside from it is logically, morally and lawfully wrong to harm our fellow beings, we also believe that they are abominable in the sight of God. In other words, we believe that in everything we do, we are answerable NOT ONLY by ourselves but ALSO to God. If our rationale fails, we still have faith in God that will enlighten, streghten and lead us back to our senses. Hence, we will never do things that would harm others even if we are in the brink to do so and being motivated by any circu.stances and even if we are in the position and capacity to do it likewise the cability to get away with it.

On the other hand, atheists rely ONLY on their own understanding and think that they are answerable ONLY by themselves. Then, what if it (understanding) would fail? What if they are getting push by an unfortunate circu.mstance and are in the position to do so and have the capability to get away with it?

And to be honest, we TRUELY religious people are cherry-pickers of bible because we only follow whatever good things and examples written on it that would strenghten us and improve our lives both in spiritual and temporal aspects. We ultimately disregard the opposites.

Apparently, atheists also cherry-pick bible verses, the difference is, they follow the other way around. And that made them (atheists) what they are now.

To conclude. Nobody commits atrocities in the name of religion but there's a lot of people that HIDE behind religion and USE the name of religion to justify their atrocities...and they are...the TRUE-BLUE & COOL BLOODDED...ATHEISTS.

Hmmm, a Pew study shows that about 12% of the population identifies as atheist or agnostic. In prison the percentage is about 0.2% atheist, and the rest are, well religious.

Yes some people who commit crimes are atheist, crimes are committed by people from all demographics, period. So while some crimes may be committed by atheists the demographics of the prison population show that the rate of committing a crime is much higher among the religious.

      @mykids,

While we are on the subject, did you know that the person who it can be said had the biggest impact on defeating Hitler's Germany was gay. That person was Alan Turing who was the genius behind deciphering the German enigma codes. With that knowledge the allies were able to know most of the military moves of the German military in advance.

This same Alan Turing was the driving force in the development of the computer.

So this one person who was the driving force in defeating Hitler and the driving force in the development of the modern computer was gay.

How was Alan Turing rewarded for all this? He was hounded and persecuted. He was sentenced to chemical cästration for being, what now, for being gay. He was hounded to the point of committing suicide.

And you have the nerve to talk of cold hearted atheists. It wasn't cold hearted atheists who hounded Turing to suicide, it was your precious believers.

The goal of this rebellion was "social reform" by replacing Confucianism, Buddhism, and Chinese folk religion with Christianity! resulting in 20 to 30 million military and civilian deaths.

While we're on the subject of filthy, vile people, let's consider a few words of wisdom from the late William S. Burroughs.

Words of advice for young people:
"If you ever do business with a religious s.o.b., GET IT IN WRITING!
His word isn't worth sh1t, not with the Good Lord telling him how to f_ck you on the deal."

In my own life experience, the slimiest, most deceitful and hurtful people have been self-proclaimed "good Christians".

I'm not saying they're all bad. I know plenty that are good, decent folks and I say bless them. Just beware of the most pious.

It would appear that s-exual orientation is biological in nature, determined by a complex interplay of ge-netic factors and the early ut-erine environment. Se-xual orientation is therefore not a choice.[60] "

    2. "Garcia-Falgueras and Swaab state in the abstract of their 2010 study, "The fe-tal brain develops during the intraut-erine period in the male direction through a direct action of tes-tosterone on the developing nerve cells, or in the female direction through the absence of this hor-mone surge. In this way, our gender identi-ty (the conviction of belonging to the male or female gender) and s-exual orientation are programmed or organized into our brain structures when we are still in the womb. There is no indication that social environment after birth has an effect on gender ident–ity or s-exual orientation."[8

    3. See also the Philadelphia Inquirer review “Gay Gene, Deconstructed”, 12/12/2011. Said review addresses the following “How do genes associated with ho-mose-xuality avoid being weeded out by Darwinian evolution?”

Of course, those gays who belong to Abrahamic religions supposedly abide by the rules of no adu-ltery or for-nication allowed.

And because of basic biology differences said monogamous ventures should always be called same-se-x unions not same-se-x marriages.

From below, on top, backwards, forwards, from this side of the Moon and from the other side too, ga-y s-exual activity is still mutual mas-turbation caused by one or more complex s-exual differences. Some differences are visually obvious in for example the complex maleness of DeGeneres, Billy Jean King and Rosie O'Donnell.

As noted, there are basic biological differences in gay unions vs. heterose-xual marriage. Government benefits are the same in both but making the distinction is important for census data and for social responses with respect to potential issues with disease, divorce and family interactions.

@Reality: I see this "born gay" thing all the time in the media.

It's a fact that some people have obesity issues starting from infancy. I remember my biology textbook categorized them as 'endomorph'. It's probably genetic i remember reading. Should they be encouraged to stay obese, even though it's scientifically proven that they have a higher-than-average risk of obesity-related diseases?

Would it be more caring for the US to encourage the ga ys to abstain from g ay s ex?

Whoever is praying for the tornados in the bible belt, please stop!

People must be praying for them because prayer changes things, right. If people were praying to stop tornados, their prayers are not working and we all know that can't be right, right.

Prayer doesn’t not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!

What T.Keller is doing by saying h-uality is not the best way for human se-xu-ality, he is watering down the severity of what it is, which is perversion of God's creation........
We all know that greed and selfishness is in every human heart, but to alter God's natural order and design for human race, it's no other then MOCKERY of it. Yes, h-se-xuality is not an unpardonable sin, and it is not unforgiveable sin, because the only unforgivable sin is REJECTING GOD'S Son of whom the Holy Spirit testifies. ... but be sure of that: No person ever, who keeps living in this lifestyle, and does not repent by acknowledging it is WRONG and ceasing to practice it, can ever be Christian and be pertaker of God's kingdom. God demands us to forsake our own ways, and acknowledge Him as Lord. Those who think they can continue in sin and be a Christian, and who think that is tolerant of perversionof His design for people which He made in His own image, they are lying to themselves! The same goes for those who, even though they don't do such things, but justify them.... Because God counts them to be partakers of sins of those whom they defend, loving rather the praise of men, then telling them the truth. To love someone means to tell them the truth, not to lie to them!

Nowhere in your bible does your god condemn the saved loving respectful relationship of a gay couple as we know and understand it today. The experts have proven that was written in the past about gays were done by bias and prejudice people, that includes the writers of the bible. What your bible condemns is male prostitution, idolatry, worshiping a pagan god using sex and rape. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the American School Counselor Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the National Association of SocialWorkers, together representing more than 480,000 mental health professionals, have all taken the position that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and thus is not something that needs to or can be “cured."
