Pope Benedict signals trip to United States in 2015

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Pope Benedict XVI signaled on Sunday that he planned to visit the United States in 2015, announcing a major Roman Catholic Church meeting in Philadelphia, which is now hosting a high-profile church sex abuse trial.

Benedict, whose sole trip to the U.S. as pope came in 2008, announced that Philadelphia would be the site of 2015’s Catholic World Meeting of Families.

"I send my warm greetings to (Philadelphia) Archbishop Charles Chaput," the pope said, "and to the Catholics of that great city, and look forward to meeting them there along with numerous families from all around the world.”

But the church seemed to stop short of guaranteeing the 85-year-old’s pope attendance at the Philadelphia meeting.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia, for instance, did not mention the pope’s attendance in its announcement of the World Meeting of Families, saying instead that it is “customarily attended by the Holy Father.”

On Friday, a Philadelphia jury began deliberating in the landmark trial of Monsignor William Lynn, the highest-ranking cleric to be charged with endangering children by allegedly helping cover up sexual abuse, a case that has made national headlines.

The church's World Meeting of Families happens every three years. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia says the meetings are intended to “strengthen and defend the sacred bonds of marriage and family across the globe.”

If I believed in miracles, I'd pray to allah or whoever that the church and all its members would be gone before 2015.

All you have to do is pray to the True God which the Pope is not following. Truly, I say to you, the Pope is against Jesus and God. With the prefix "anti" meaning against, we know what that means.

The Teachings our Father(God) taught through Jesus was Repentance which is reiterated through the Gospels and John the Baptist who prepared the way for Jesus. Jesus said "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me". So the definition of sin was made very clear by Jesus before church leaders corrupted it. A sin is a deviation from the The Way (Repentance), The Truth, and The Life. By factual definition, error, mistakes, and deceptions are deviations from The Truth. Therefore, repentance means turn to a pattern of behavior of correcting your sins which, truly, are deviations from The Way, The Truth, and The Life . A Catholic dogma states that the Pope is Infallible and uses deceptive semantics with the word impeccability stating that sin and error (a deviation from truth) are different. This Papal Infallibility is not true which makes it a deviation from The Truth, a deviation from Jesus, and a deviation from our Father (God). It also is a major obstacle for the Pope to practice what Jesus taught which is repentance. It becomes very difficult to correct your deviations from The Way, The Truth, and The Life when you think that you are infallible and protected from erorr or mistakes.

You cannot argue that this is based on opinion. My words here are factual.

Oh dear god, like he'll still be alive! If, by some twisted miracle, the old nazi-pedophile is still alive, I hope it is the first papal visit where demonstrators outnumber sheep, I mean believers.

In other Vatican news, Pope Benedict XVI also announced a visit to Disneyland in 2136, a tour of Antarctica in 428 BC, and a pilgrimage to the teapot orbitting Uranus for a conference with Zeus and Grouncho, with a light snack of Cheetos and Tang served. Rumors of the Pope's Alzheimers are staunchly denied.

2015? The cardinals are already maneuvering for his slot in the corporation because he is so old. I doubt we will see Pope Ratty in 2015. But we'll still have the abuse scandal.

The bible does not prohibit child abuse at all, fred. Did you just fall off of a turnip truck?

      June 4, 2012 at 6:20 pm |
    • fred

Perhaps so, what verse did you have in mind?

      June 4, 2012 at 6:24 pm |
    • Brandon W.

You want me to point out a verse that does not exist? The closest the bible comes to speaking against child abuse is Jesus telling how bad it would be to cause a child to "stumble" yet that verse can be interpreted to mean that child abuse is okay as "stumbling" in that context is spiritual and has nothing to do with physical or mental abuse.

Perhaps you should come up with a verse that prohibits child abuse or you could list all the others that tell you how to murder your children if they misbehave....whatever floats your boat, fred.

Recognizing the flaws, follies and frauds in the foundations of Islam, Judaism and Christianity, the "bowers", kneelers" and "pew peasants" are converging these religions into some simple rules of life. No pope, koran, bible, clerics, nuns, monks, imams, evangelicals, ayatollahs, rabbis, professors of religion or priests needed or desired.

Ditto for houses of "worthless worship" aka mosques, churches, basilicas, cathedrals, temples and synagogues.

The only man that was ever close to God was Jesus. The pope is a fraud. He gets paid millions for...nothing? Doesn't the bible say the love of money is the root of all evil?

Not all priests etc are bad but honestly..Catholism makes no sense

    • Jesus Christ

The source of your Jesus story and your entire morality base is from Catholicism. Which planet are you from? No Catholicism and you would not be worshiping any Jesus. The Jesus non-sense would have dies with the Jews.

No Catholocism and people like you would probably be praying to a rock... "Dear our holy father Rock, sitting on the right hand of Snoopy... Please grant me three wishes... and continue to bless me." Or in a few years "Holy father Captain Kirk, please bless Scotty so that he can beam me up when i die..."

When Pope JP II came to my city for World Youth Day, it was a party!
All the bars, clubs, drug dens and brothels were full of young Catholics.
At the time, I lived near the club district and lost count of how many of them asked me where to find cocaine and/or massage parlours.
