We don't teach hate, says church where anti-homosexual song filmedBy Ismael Estrada, CNN Greensburg, Indiana (CNN) - About 20 protesters gathered on Sunday outside the Apostolic Truth Tabernacle here to voice opposition to a viral online video that was taped in the church and shows a young child singing song with lyrics that offer a harsh message for homosexuals. The video, which surfaced on YouTube last week, shows a child in front of the congregation, singing "I know that God is right, and somebody's wrong... ain't no homo going to make it to heaven." The congregation erupts in applause at those lines, which the unidentified boy repeats as the pastor looks on. At another point in the video a voice is heard shouting,"That’s my boy." CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories In the first Sunday service since the video surfaced, congregants arrived to the church as protesters jeered them over the video. A church leader, who would not give his name, told CNN that journalists were not allowed inside the church and declined to offer anyone from church leadership to comment on the video. The leader said that he needed to be cautious about letting outsiders into the church because it had received threats over the video and asked CNN to leave the premises. Church videos with harsh words for gays go viral online The local sheriff's office said the church had not reported any verifiable threats. No one answered the door at the home of Jeff Sangl, the church's pastor. The video of the singing boy was the latest in a string of viral anti-gay videos that have surfaced from independent churches. Those videos have been resoundingly condemned by religious leaders, even by conservatives who believe homosexual sex is a sin. The Apostolic Truth Tabernacle posted a statement on its website that says in part: "The Pastor and members of Apostolic Truth Tabernacle do not condone, teach, or practice hate of any person for any reason.” The pastor's son, Josh Sangl, told CNN his father was away on vacation and that there was much more to the video than we were being told, though he wouldn’t elaborate. The majority of the church members wouldn’t comment about the controversy or respond to questions about the parents of the young boy. Under the system of peer-review, a researcher submits findings to a journal for publication. Along with a review by editors, the article is sent to several specialists in the field.

David: It is one thing to argue that the rules of the Old Testament don't apply to current Christianity - they don't, because Jesus over-turned them in creating the New Covenant (something that Christians seem to only remember when people point out the absurdity of the OT, but forget when they want to use passages from the OT to condemn someone). However, it is the same God in the OT, whether or not his actions were pre-Christianity. Are you trying to argue that God was an terrible guy in the OT, but he matured and changed in the New Testament? That certainly doesn't seem consistent with an all-knowing or all-powerful God. Yes,God's laws changed with the arrival of Jesus, but that doesn't change erase the fact that he spent much of the OT committing horrible atrocities. Jesus died to erase our sins, not God's.

So the church says it doesn't preach/teach hate. Well, actually; yes it does preach/teach hate. It goes something like this; "Believe like we believe and act like we do and you go to heaven. Deviate in any way and you will go to h ell." That's it. Just a bunch of haters, hating in the name of the bible and God.
Actually they don't say that. That's what you hear when you hear the message of Jesus though because shooting the messenger relieves you of the responsibility of heeding the message. That message is that Jesus saves us and therefore we're going to heaven. You can too and that choice is yours and yours alone. I, for one, won't condemn you if you don't want to come along for the ride. If I invite you to a dinner, why would I be mad or be down on you because you say no? It's an invite, that's all. Good for you if you come along as you might have a good time, but ultimately the choice is yours. I agree that some people may send that message a little strongly but that has nothing to do with the message. It has to do with human weakness though and most Christians...at least the ones I know..are very much aware of their faults and weaknesses. Nothing wrong with telling someone they are coming on a little strong, either. But that's no reason to close your mind to the message itself. There's a truth there you're blocking out because you don't like the messenger.

If it makes you feel better to believe in christianity, go for it. that is a bad excuse the religious use not to have to deal with an argument present. you assume because someone posts a quote that their is no well-thought out intent behind it. bad assumption. studies show that atheists have read more of the bible than the christians that supposedly lead their life by it. in other words, atheists generally have considered both sides.
True but unfortunately people tend to throw on random bible quotes without really explaining the whole thing or why in fact they support it or feel it is relevant. If you post a quote and there is thought behind it and some added words of why, well great! If you just post something in the middle of a conversation and leave it at that, well that is fine and dandy but unless you interpret the meaning as to how it relates, it is like me posting specs about cars. Nice but no real point to it.
you should turn that critical eye on the religious, too. how many religious quotes do you think get posted when it's obvious the poster hasn't read the bible, certainly hasn't read it with a religious, historical and skeptical study guides. and you can't expect a giant post explaining every bible phrase. that's a little over the top. and some phrases from the bible stand on their own.

As I've mentioned on other boards, I don't need a sky boogie man, the big book of scary fairy tales and myths, and threats of eternal damnation to tell me that killing, lying, cheating, stealing etc. are wrong. I may not be perfect, but I know right from wrong without religion and its hypocritical "loving god".
And yes, I've studied the bible. Probably more than most ministers and definitely more than any priest I've ever met. I spent 50 years as a believer. Of course, someone will probably tell me I never really believed. That's usually the typical response. As if you even know me.
