We don't teach hate, says church where anti-homosexual song filmed

By Ismael Estrada, CNN

Greensburg, Indiana (CNN) - About 20 protesters gathered on Sunday outside the Apostolic Truth Tabernacle here to voice opposition to a viral online video that was taped in the church and shows a young child singing song with lyrics that offer a harsh message for homosexuals.

The video, which surfaced on YouTube last week, shows a child in front of the congregation, singing "I know that God is right, and somebody's wrong... ain't no homo going to make it to heaven."

The congregation erupts in applause at those lines, which the unidentified boy repeats as the pastor looks on.

At another point in the video a voice is heard shouting,"That’s my boy."

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

In the first Sunday service since the video surfaced, congregants arrived to the church as protesters jeered them over the video.

A church leader, who would not give his name, told CNN that journalists were not allowed inside the church and declined to offer anyone from church leadership to comment on the video.

The leader said that he needed to be cautious about letting outsiders into the church because it had received threats over the video and asked CNN to leave the premises.

Church videos with harsh words for gays go viral online

The local sheriff's office said the church had not reported any verifiable threats.

No one answered the door at the home of Jeff Sangl, the church's pastor.

The video of the singing boy was the latest in a string of viral anti-gay videos that have surfaced from independent churches.  Those videos have been resoundingly condemned by religious leaders, even by conservatives who believe homosexual sex is a sin.

The Apostolic Truth Tabernacle posted a statement on its website that says in part: "The Pastor and members of Apostolic Truth Tabernacle do not condone, teach, or practice hate of any person for any reason.”

The pastor's son, Josh Sangl, told CNN his father was away on vacation and that there was much more to the video than we were being told, though he wouldn’t elaborate.

The majority of the church members wouldn’t comment about the controversy or respond to questions about the parents of the young boy.

"I think it's blown out of proportion, you know," said Robert Kirby, who is not a church member but was attending Sunday's church service in support of his daughter, who teaches Sunday School there. "They love everybody.

"They don't love sin though," he said. "It's all in the Bible."

    Question to Bootyfunk:
Who was the book of Leviticus originally addressed to?

No but you talked about it like only Christians adhere to that portion of the Bible. Leviticus is part of the Torah as well

Under the system of peer-review, a researcher submits findings to a journal for publication. Along with a review by editors, the article is sent to several specialists in the field.

      June 5, 2012 at 4:25 pm |
    • WOW

These reviewers are not paid for their time, their names are usually not published, and their comments usually remain secret. They are usually not allowed to contact the researchers directly to ask questions, and they do not try to replicate the research.

      June 5, 2012 at 4:26 pm |
    • WOW

But peer review also lacks consistent standards. Procedures vary among the world's 10,000 or so journals. A peer-reviewer often spends about four hours reviewing research that may have taken months or years to complete, but the amount of time spent on a review and the expertise of the reviewer can differ greatly, especially at lesser-known journals.

      @MThomas

If you claim to be Christian why don't you try READING your own holy book for once?
      Leviticus 20:13
If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.
Again... try READING YOUR OWN HOLY BOOK IF YOU CLAIM TO BE OF SAID FAITH! How in the hell are you a Christian and have never actually read the book that tells you HOW TO BE a Christian? Seriously? I understand that you are probably lazy and haven't read a book cover to cover since grade school but perhaps you should maybe TRY to get through your holy book. LEARN, EDUCATE YOURSELF... I know... so difficult for you to actually do something that requires you to THINK FOR YOURSELF... like most Christians... you seem content on being a sheeple rather than being an intelligent and knowledgeable human being.

Heaven Sent is obvioulsly a troll of the worst sort... one who uses God's name to preach hate. (Which by my understanding goes against everything God should stand for). Let's just ignore and not give him/her anymore material to feed the EGO.

    June 4, 2012 at 7:35 pm |
    • Bootyfunk

while i applaud you coming down on hate, i'm wondering how much of the bible you've read.

"Which by my understanding goes against everything God should stand for"

God kills the first born children of egypt to punish the pharoah. babies. God kills babies. there are many many more examples of heinous actions like this in the bible. how do you reconcile these atrocities with the idea of a 'loving' god? serious question.

oh wait a minute, are you christian? my mistake if you are not.

      June 4, 2012 at 7:43 pm |
    • David Myers

Come on bootyfunk, you are being disingenuous. You know Pennylanie, in referring to Christianity, is excluding the old testiment as being pre-Christianity – which it is. Your old testiment crimes and murders in the name of God if not by God, are not relative to true Christians – i.e. those who followed the teachings of Jesus, rather than any church raised in his name. You have raised a straw mad argument that you then precede to demolish. So what. It's got nothing to do with Pennylanie's comments.

    • Doug

David: It is one thing to argue that the rules of the Old Testament don't apply to current Christianity - they don't, because Jesus over-turned them in creating the New Covenant (something that Christians seem to only remember when people point out the absurdity of the OT, but forget when they want to use passages from the OT to condemn someone). However, it is the same God in the OT, whether or not his actions were pre-Christianity. Are you trying to argue that God was an terrible guy in the OT, but he matured and changed in the New Testament? That certainly doesn't seem consistent with an all-knowing or all-powerful God. Yes,God's laws changed with the arrival of Jesus, but that doesn't change erase the fact that he spent much of the OT committing horrible atrocities. Jesus died to erase our sins, not God's.

Deviate in any way and you will go to h ell." That's it. Just a bunch of haters, hating in the name of the bible and God.

    June 4, 2012 at 7:26 pm |
    • Rod C. Venger

Actually they don't say that. That's what you hear when you hear the message of Jesus though because shooting the messenger relieves you of the responsibility of heeding the message. That message is that Jesus saves us and therefore we're going to heaven. You can too and that choice is yours and yours alone. I, for one, won't condemn you if you don't want to come along for the ride. If I invite you to a dinner, why would I be mad or be down on you because you say no? It's an invite, that's all. Good for you if you come along as you might have a good time, but ultimately the choice is yours. I agree that some people may send that message a little strongly but that has nothing to do with the message. It has to do with human weakness though and most Christians...at least the ones I know..are very much aware of their faults and weaknesses. Nothing wrong with telling someone they are coming on a little strong, either. But that's no reason to close your mind to the message itself. There's a truth there you're blocking out because you don't like the messenger.

      June 4, 2012 at 7:42 pm |
    • JWT

It has nothing to do with the messenger and wholly to do with not believing your particular truth.

      June 4, 2012 at 8:00 pm |

      @ Rod

"Shooting the messenger" is just another blah, blah, blah, excuse to justify the hatred that many churches condone. I don't really care what you want to believe. If it makes you feel better to believe in christianity, go for it. But this is hate mongering and dressing it up in pretty words or telling anyone who speaks out against it that they are somehow "mistaken" just makes you part of the problem.

    @HeavenSent:
You remind me of what Jesus said:
‘Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.
‘Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are.

Remember everyone is on level ground before God ie we are all sinners in need of Grace. The difference between those who get it and those who don't is that those who get it know how desperately they need Grace.

Remember the parable of the tax collector and the Pharisee praying? Only one went away forgiven.
Remember Jesus' harshest criticism was for those who claimed to know him. As always God always cleans house first.

      Not screwed, just real.
To walk the walk after Jesus is not something you do in your past time.
You are all in or you are not.
You care about what God cares about- people.
You own up to your weakness that you are messed up and in need of help.

Why do you think outcasts flocked to Jesus?

He called out the religious folks on their mess (i.e. those who claimed to know God)
and never despised people who truly accepted they were in need of help

hard to say, really. jesus said some great things about love, but he supported slavery and at the end days kills children.

      June 4, 2012 at 7:26 pm |
    • Bootyfunk

      @epica

that is a bad excuse the religious use not to have to deal with an argument present. you assume because someone posts a quote that their is no well-thought out intent behind it. bad assumption. studies show that atheists have read more of the bible than the christians that supposedly lead their life by it. in other words, atheists generally have considered both sides.

      June 4, 2012 at 7:29 pm |
    • Epica

True but unfortunately people tend to throw on random bible quotes without really explaining the whole thing or why in fact they support it or feel it is relevant. If you post a quote and there is thought behind it and some added words of why, well great! If you just post something in the middle of a conversation and leave it at that, well that is fine and dandy but unless you interpret the meaning as to how it relates, it is like me posting specs about cars. Nice but no real point to it.

      June 4, 2012 at 7:34 pm |
    • Bootyfunk

you should turn that critical eye on the religious, too. how many religious quotes do you think get posted when it's obvious the poster hasn't read the bible, certainly hasn't read it with a religious, historical and skeptical study guides. and you can't expect a giant post explaining every bible phrase. that's a little over the top. and some phrases from the bible stand on their own.

I don't need to be a christian to lead a moral and good life. Sorry but no one needs the bible to be a moral person. You just need a sense of what is right and what is wrong. Some people need church for it and some people don't. Not everyone needs to fit into your cookie cutter world.

That's only true for you. The people I associate with are atheists, theists, agnostics, and seekers and they don't lie, cheat and steal like those you associate with evidently.

      June 4, 2012 at 7:28 pm |
    • Tr1Xen

Um, I don't think so. There's far too much evidence that man created religion to control others. Too many religious myths have been debunked for me to believe any of that hocus pocus garbage. Still, I don't hate you religious people even if I do find your religion to be more than a little kooky. Realizing one's mortality can be uncomfortable for a lot of people, so they lean on religion to keep themselves from going insane. I can respect that.

      June 4, 2012 at 7:37 pm |
    • MandoZink

As an atheist, you discover you have to answer to yourself for what you do to others. You cannot be unjust and expect to get off the hook by having an omnipotent supreme being to forgive you for the "devil’s" influence. It is YOU who must maintain integrity. That is what most Christians get completely backwards. Atheists can be much more understanding of what they must be as fellow humans

      June 4, 2012 at 7:44 pm |
    • Flappy

Okay if a "good" person lies cheats and steals then in what way is he actually "good"? Is a "good" person a person who agrees with you?

I do not think the word "good" means what you think it means.

      June 4, 2012 at 7:51 pm |
    • Bet

As I've mentioned on other boards, I don't need a sky boogie man, the big book of scary fairy tales and myths, and threats of eternal damnation to tell me that killing, lying, cheating, stealing etc. are wrong. I may not be perfect, but I know right from wrong without religion and its hypocritical "loving god".

And yes, I've studied the bible. Probably more than most ministers and definitely more than any priest I've ever met. I spent 50 years as a believer. Of course, someone will probably tell me I never really believed. That's usually the typical response. As if you even know me.

    "that's my boy!"
Those are the words of an intensely ho.mo.phobic father who desperately and ignorantly feels that his children's actions validate his manliness or machismo.
He is so glad to have taught his child an evil and hateful song and assumes that teaching this song to his kid means that the kid will never be gay – yet it is the child's DNA and not the bigotry he has burned into his child's head that will determine the child's actual orientation.
The whole thing is just sickening and sad. Teach your child to hate, to be a bigot, to be a racist, and you have destroyed a part of that child's innocence for your own overweening pride and selfishness.

That father deserves a millstone around his neck and a boat trip into deep water.

of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are
seared, who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God
created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know

Well HS i have nothing to be ashamed about when it comes to religion. You and I see very differently about it. There is nothing wrong with that either. I am not a christian, never was a christan either. Thus your concepts and books of religion do not apply to me and never will. The you do not accept that is 100% your problem and none of mine since I don;t care what you believe in unless you somehow try to make me believe in it. Like the JWs with your unrellenting message of unacceptance you would not be welcome at my door.

let's be real. they DO condone hate.

like most cowards, they are afraid to say it in public because the public doesn't agree with their archaic views on women and g.ays. so they are closet bigots. it's not that they aren't h.omophobic - they just got caught on video. so now they're saying "we don't hate anyone" and pointing to the halo over their heads. yeah, right.

how many times do you think anyone at this church has stopped someone spouting off about the 'f.ags' and said, "hey, it's not right to bash our g.ay brothers"? i'm guessing about zero times.

Bootyfunk, who do you think you're kidding? You non-believers are the ones that hate Jesus and anyone that love and follows His truth. Christians tell you His truth because you are blinded by your sins and refuse to repent to Jesus for your sinful ways. Instead of thanking. or, appreciating us, you hate us. The only thing left for us to do is to continue to love and follow Jesus as you choose not to love and follow Jesus' truth how to live righteously.

When will you get it through your thick skull, HS? Nobody "hates Jesus". But I don't see many folks here who can even stand you for more than a minute.

When it comes to jesus there is more than 1 truth. And I do not know anyone that hates jesus. In fact most people I know just do not care. The only reason to care is because some misguided groups of people are, many in the name if jesus, doing their best to deny people their civil rights. And civil rights are not a product of religion and somehow people need to see that

"You non-believers are the ones that hate Jesus and anyone that love and follows His truth. Christians tell you His truth because you are blinded by your sins and refuse to repent to Jesus for your sinful ways."

eterosexual behavior and homosexual behavior are normal aspects of human sexuality. Despite the persistence of stereotypes that portray lesbian, gay, and bisexual people as disturbed, several decades of research and clinical experience have led all mainstream medical and mental health organizations in this country to conclude that these orientations represent normal forms of human experience. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the American School Counselor Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the National Association of SocialWorkers, together representing more than 480,000 mental health professionals, have all taken the position that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and thus is not something that needs to or can be “cured."

Being gay is NORMAL which is why they deserve the same civil rights as straights.

While the rest of you are blinded by your sins....I am blinded by my ego. My EGO is greater than reality itself. I AM JESUS HALL MONITOR WARRIOR! In the name of Jesus I cast out demons and lay judgement on all of those around me. Only I know the truth while the rest of you wonder around like zombies and will burn for eternity.

Do you completely ignore 1 Peter 3:15 where it calls all christians to provide reason for the hope you have, but to do so with gentleness and respect? HeavenSent has a weird obsession with "carnal lust" and "lust of the flesh". I'm guessing HeavenSent is a per.vert who goes to church and acts all holy and pious, then goes home and pounds a plastic doll with "made in China" printed on her ass or faps to kiddie pr0n.

Telling people that Jeebus will fry them is its way of feeling better about being such an ass.hoel.

I think HeavenSent is one of those dumb w enc hes who got all fat and found god, only to have her husband run off with a younger girl. I know a couple guys whose wives got fat when they found jesus. Then they started caring more about god than s e x. Both guys dumped them for hot young nym phos. Both ex-wives now sound just like HeavenSent. Always blabbering about sin and lust because their husbands dumped the fatas ses for for hot young non-jesustards.

Sure, they don't condone hate. In their religion applause and cheering are a form of disapproval. The little boy came up with that all on his own, of course none of these fine upstanding Christians taught him those things.

All Christians who aren't lazy and read Jesus' truth (the Bible) know what He wants from us. We're not blinded by carnal lust of the flesh sins. What's your excuse Tommie, Tom? Oh, you'd rather send your gay friends to the eternal flames because you refuse to learn His truth. Makes absolutely no sense for your laziness.

That's why your so lazy to understand that the experts around the world have proven that being gay is NOT a mental illness, it's NOT a choice and it CAN"T be voluntarily changed. Part of reading comprehension 101 is putting the scriptures into historical context to get the real meaning but you're too lazy to do that too. Duh!

Heaven sent, the only reason you are so obsessed about 'lust of the flesh' is because it is clear that you are a lifelong virgin who has never had a person physically interested in you. Sucks to be you because s-x is awesome! Too bad you are going to die a virgin.....

which in English translates to "I'm not getting laid".

HeavenSent is probably that weird 300lb fat lady that lives in the doublewide trailer up the street, smells like cheap perfume and baby powder, gossips about all of the hot girls, and spends all day every Sunday eating church bake sale cookies.

Fat weird bible thumper who never ever gets laid. One day she'll get some di ck and go off the deep end. She will instantly be the town w h o r e.
