We don't teach hate, says church where anti-homosexual song filmed

By Ismael Estrada, CNN

Greensburg, Indiana (CNN) - About 20 protesters gathered on Sunday outside the Apostolic Truth Tabernacle here to voice opposition to a viral online video that was taped in the church and shows a young child singing song with lyrics that offer a harsh message for homosexuals.

The video, which surfaced on YouTube last week, shows a child in front of the congregation, singing "I know that God is right, and somebody's wrong... ain't no homo going to make it to heaven."

The congregation erupts in applause at those lines, which the unidentified boy repeats as the pastor looks on.

At another point in the video a voice is heard shouting,"That’s my boy."

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

In the first Sunday service since the video surfaced, congregants arrived to the church as protesters jeered them over the video.

A church leader, who would not give his name, told CNN that journalists were not allowed inside the church and declined to offer anyone from church leadership to comment on the video.

The leader said that he needed to be cautious about letting outsiders into the church because it had received threats over the video and asked CNN to leave the premises.

Church videos with harsh words for gays go viral online

The local sheriff's office said the church had not reported any verifiable threats.

No one answered the door at the home of Jeff Sangl, the church's pastor.

The video of the singing boy was the latest in a string of viral anti-gay videos that have surfaced from independent churches.  Those videos have been resoundingly condemned by religious leaders, even by conservatives who believe homosexual sex is a sin.

The Apostolic Truth Tabernacle posted a statement on its website that says in part: "The Pastor and members of Apostolic Truth Tabernacle do not condone, teach, or practice hate of any person for any reason.”

The pastor's son, Josh Sangl, told CNN his father was away on vacation and that there was much more to the video than we were being told, though he wouldn’t elaborate.

The majority of the church members wouldn’t comment about the controversy or respond to questions about the parents of the young boy.

"I think it's blown out of proportion, you know," said Robert Kirby, who is not a church member but was attending Sunday's church service in support of his daughter, who teaches Sunday School there. "They love everybody.

"They don't love sin though," he said. "It's all in the Bible."

I don't agree with their actions but is branding them as hate mongers any different as them damning gays as sinners. Whatever happened to freedom speech based on an individuals beliefs. Neither one on each side of the fence has the right to silence another because the other expresses what they believe.

We have a right to call them hate-mongers, just like they have a right to speak hate

Have they been "silenced"? Did anyone board up the church windows? Arrest the kid? His dad? The pastor? No? Then how is their 'freedom of speech' being abrogated? People have every right to protest outside that church and lambaste its members here on this blog.

Plant hate and hate will grow. If they teach their kids to hate people they should not be surprised when they get a negative reaction.

What's ironic is that no where in the New Testament does Jesus say anything about being kept out of heaven because you are gay. However he is very clear that being rich will keep you out of heaven. See Matthew 19:24 "Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” Funny how the "religious right" doesn't quote that line very often.

too bad no one ever told you heaven and the "kingdom" did not havre the same meaning. Someone told you that, and you were too dumb to look into it.

Isn't it possible that there is a little "inbreeding" going on in this town? Sure sounds like it, especially when these folks are actually interviewed. Plus the kid sounds a little off as well.

    An old joke –

Why was the Catholic church worried about Michael Jackson?
Because if he molested any more young boys they would have to give him his own parish....

We have the same crap going on in Northeast Indiana. The "Christians" routinely ridicule and harass anyone who is not like them. It's crazy. Some Christian Missionary groups will ridicule Catholics. Their premise is that they really aren't "saved" so they aren't real Christians. Ignorance and stupidity plays a big part in this. They are so far from what "Jesus would do" that it is nuts. Hatred rules. I am not Christian and neither are my kids so they know first hand what these "Christians" can do to non Christians – it is sickening. The local government and schoolboards overlook it since they are members of the same nutjob churches. It's pervasive.

In some churches in the South it was worse to be a Catholic than to be a Communist.

Those guys aren't really Christians, so don't worry about them. On Judgement day they will be going a whole other direction than the good people.

OK, I would just like to say that the REAL christian faith believes that there is nothing you can do, or not do, that will get you to heaven. The sacrifice of Yeshua on the cross is what gets you to heaven and NOTHING ELSE. Confession, penance, good deeds, etc. – completely useless when it comes to eternal life. That said, I think I've had quite enough of being politically correct. Gay is twisted. that's all there is to it. That's not a religious opinion. It's a human opinion. And it's not filled with hate either. I have gay friends who I love very much. But Gay is twisted and I'm sick of trying to pretend like it isn't. Even gay people know that gay is messed up. They need help and there doesn't seem to be very many people willing to help them. Sad, that.

If being gay is "twisted" as you put it, then why doesn't "Yeshua," as you call Jesus, not mention it ONE time? If it were an issue for Him, would He have not mentioned it? H

If being gay is "twisted" as you put it, then why doesn't "Yeshua," as you call Jesus, not mention it ONE time? If it were an issue for Him, would He have not mentioned it? He does, however, tell people not to judge one another (Matthew 7:1).

I agree completely with the guy that doesn't hate gays, but thinks it is twisted. There is no gay gene, it's more likely psychological/hormonal, and should be treated. It's becomae a political football with the democrats pushing bogus science to try and gain another 3 percent of the population. Screw up the family screw up the values and more people will be dependent on government and give up their liberty.
