We don't teach hate, says church where anti-homosexual song filmed

By Ismael Estrada, CNN

Greensburg, Indiana (CNN) - About 20 protesters gathered on Sunday outside the Apostolic Truth Tabernacle here to voice opposition to a viral online video that was taped in the church and shows a young child singing song with lyrics that offer a harsh message for homosexuals.

The video, which surfaced on YouTube last week, shows a child in front of the congregation, singing "I know that God is right, and somebody's wrong... ain't no homo going to make it to heaven."

The congregation erupts in applause at those lines, which the unidentified boy repeats as the pastor looks on.

At another point in the video a voice is heard shouting,"That’s my boy."

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

In the first Sunday service since the video surfaced, congregants arrived to the church as protesters jeered them over the video.

A church leader, who would not give his name, told CNN that journalists were not allowed inside the church and declined to offer anyone from church leadership to comment on the video.

The leader said that he needed to be cautious about letting outsiders into the church because it had received threats over the video and asked CNN to leave the premises.

Church videos with harsh words for gays go viral online

The local sheriff's office said the church had not reported any verifiable threats.

No one answered the door at the home of Jeff Sangl, the church's pastor.

The video of the singing boy was the latest in a string of viral anti-gay videos that have surfaced from independent churches.  Those videos have been resoundingly condemned by religious leaders, even by conservatives who believe homosexual sex is a sin.

The Apostolic Truth Tabernacle posted a statement on its website that says in part: "The Pastor and members of Apostolic Truth Tabernacle do not condone, teach, or practice hate of any person for any reason.”

The pastor's son, Josh Sangl, told CNN his father was away on vacation and that there was much more to the video than we were being told, though he wouldn’t elaborate.

The majority of the church members wouldn’t comment about the controversy or respond to questions about the parents of the young boy.

"I think it's blown out of proportion, you know," said Robert Kirby, who is not a church member but was attending Sunday's church service in support of his daughter, who teaches Sunday School there. "They love everybody.

"They don't love sin though," he said. "It's all in the Bible."

The sad thing is the kid probably didn't even understand what he was singing about, all he knows is he was praised for singing it. That praise will reinforce the ideas as he comes to understand what it is the words mean, and in turn he will develop hate for those the words denigrate.

That child is young enough that you cannot guarantee he will do anything in particular. He might come to understand the fallacies of his parents and the religion he sings about. But this child abuse must stop.

You nailed it. This hypocritical church and its congregation are anti-Christian in the sense that they do not follow Christ's teaching.

It's nice to see that The Apostolic Truth Tabernacle members say that they do not condone, teach, or practice hate. But they have apparently forgotten that the video that shows them condoning, teaching and practicing hate is still out there, showing what liars they are. What an embarrassment they are to real Christians everywhere.

There is no such thing as a "real" christian or "true" christian because there is no god, no "christ", and there is nothing you can do to change that fact.
Anyone can claim to be something they are not, just as anyone can claim to believe in something that is not true.

We can argue about religion and blah blah blah all day. Fact is, there are good Christians out there, bad Atheists, bad Christians, good Atheists, etc. What's depressing is that this is a kid saying these words, and being encouraged to do so. These issues only go away as future generations learn to accept others, and this kid is being held back from doing that by bigotry he's learning from elders. It's not like this kid was born hating others, he learned it. It's not so much religion, as probably his parents using religion as there excuse to teach their twisted views.

"Why do we care what these religious fanatic think."

Because they are trying to block gays from having their civil right to marry. These rights include:

      Tax Benefits
-–Filing joint income tax returns with the IRS and state taxing authorities.
-–Creating a "family partnership" under federal tax laws, which allows you to divide business income among family members.

      Estate Planning Benefits
-–Inheriting a share of your spouse's estate.
-–Receiving an exemption from both estate taxes and gift taxes for all property you give or leave to your spouse.
-–Creating life estate trusts that are restricted to married couples, including QTIP trusts, QDOT trusts, and marital deduction trusts.
-–Obtaining priority if a conservator needs to be appointed for your spouse – that is, someone to make financial and/or medical decisions on your spouse's behalf.

      Government Benefits
-–Receiving Social Security, Medicare, and disability benefits for spouses.
-–Receiving veterans' and military benefits for spouses, such as those for education, medical care, or special loans.
      -–Receiving public as-sistance benefits.
      -–Employment Benefits
-–Obtaining insurance benefits through a spouse's employer.
-–Taking family leave to care for your spouse during an illness.
-–Receiving wages, workers' compensation, and retirement plan benefits for a deceased spouse.
-–Taking bereavement leave if your spouse or one of your spouse's close relatives dies.

      Medical Benefits
-–Visiting your spouse in a hospital intensive care unit or during restricted visiting hours in other parts of a medical facility.
-–Making medical decisions for your spouse if he or she becomes incapacitated and unable to express wishes for treatment.

      Death Benefits
-–Consenting to after-death examinations and procedures.
-–Making burial or other final arrangements.

      Family Benefits
-–Filing for stepparent or joint adoption.
-–Applying for joint foster care rights.
-–Receiving equitable division of property if you divorce.
-–Receiving spousal or child support, child custody, and visitation if you divorce.

      Housing Benefits
-–Living in neighborhoods zoned for "families only."
-–Automatically renewing leases signed by your spouse.

      Consumer Benefits
-–Receiving family rates for health, homeowners', auto, and other types of insurance.
-–Receiving tuition discounts and permission to use school facilities.
-–Other consumer discounts and incentives offered only to married couples or families.
      -–Other Legal Benefits and Protections
-–Suing a third person for wrongful death of your spouse and loss of consortium (loss of intimacy).
-–Suing a third person for offenses that interfere with the success of your marriage, such as alienation of affection and criminal conversation (these laws are available in only a few states).
-–Claiming the marital communications privilege, which means a court can't force you to disclose the contents of confidential communications between you and your spouse during your marriage.
-–Receiving crime victims' recovery benefits if your spouse is the victim of a crime.
-–Obtaining immigration and residency benefits for noncitizen spouse.
-–Visiting rights in jails and other places where visitors are restricted to immediate family.

    1. Christ never said anything about hom ose xuality and only called the worship of money an @bomination. This is what he had to say to a gay man he met: Truly I tell you, you have greater faith then anyone in the whole of Israel… Mathew 8:10 & John 14:12
    2. The old testament written in Hebrew also never used a Hebrew word equivalent to hom ose xuality. The closest is a word meaning “Illegal Se x ual Act” which can mean anything from adu1tery to in cest but not exclusively hom ose xuality.
    3. The new testament is written mostly in Greek with some Aramaic. Again no Greek or Aramaic word for hom ose xuality is ever used. The closets is the Greek word for “softness” often used to describe effeminate men, men who will not fight in battle (Conscientious Objectors), men who are subservient to others, i.e. don’t stand up for their rights, etc. On the positive side it also refers to the way in which you should treat your brother in need, softly.
    4. Christians are not obligated to follow the old testament, but only the new covenant that Christ gave us. Acts.15, Galatians 3;17-25, 4;8-11, 5:18, Corinthians 3:6-13, Hebrew7:11-12
    5. Christ’s new covenant and the new testament are not exactly the same thing, though they both have overlaps. Here is why:
    a. The bible used by most Christians was created by the Council of Nicea about 300 years after the death of Christ. The council was convened by the Roman Emperor Constantine after he converted to Christianity. This Council became very political both in terms of Roman politics and in the politics of the various Christian churches that had arose by this time.
    b. The bottom line is half of Christ’s gospels were excluded from the bible and many books were included that cannot be verified to be written by one of Christ’s disciples. Some of those books were written as much as 200 years after the death of Christ, including the book of Revelation.
    c. The bible may be the word of Constantine and a bunch of politically savvy priests, but it is at best a book of half-truths [lies] about the word of God.
    6. Here is what Christ actually said about eternal life: Mathew 19:17-22 (translated from the original Aramaic directly to English):
And one came near and said to him, “Good teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?” But he said to him, “Why do you call me good? There is none good except God alone. But if you want to enter life, keep the commandments.” He said to him, “Which ones?” But Yeshua(Jesus) said to him, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not testify falsely.” “Honor your father and your mother”, and “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” That young man said to him, “I have kept all these from my childhood; what am I lacking?” Yeshua (Jesus) said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go sell your possessions and give to the poor and you will have treasure in Heaven, and come after me.” But that young man heard this saying and he went away, as it was grievous to him, for he had many possessions.

A new religion should be created that is based entirely on Christs gospels, not the current Bible. I think that would be very interesting and would definitely consider joining such a church.

Bottom line: if your religious leaders teach you to hate and fear and harm those that are different than you, then they are teaching you to serve a god who is evil.

If, however, your religious leaders teach you to love and respect and serve those that are different than you, then they are teaching you to serve a god who is holy.

It is from service that you get to Heaven, not by judging others. God is Love.

  10. Bible just a theory

The BIBLE is filled with HATE, because to obey the Bible, you must 1) KILL ALL THE GAYS Leviticus 20:13 'If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death.*******2) KILL FOUL MOUTHED CHILDREN Leviticus 20:9 "If anyone curses his father or mother, he must be put to death.*******3) KILL ADULTERERS Leviticus 20:10 "If a man commits adultery with another man's wife—with the wife of his neighbor—both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death.*******4) KILL DISOBEDIANT CHILDREN Deut 21:18 "If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. They shall say to the elders, "This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a profligate and a drunkard. Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death." ********5) CUT OFF WOMEN'S HANDS Deut 25:11 "If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity." ********5) SLAVES SHOULD BE OBEDIENT Ephesians 6:5 "Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ." *******6) KILL THE JEWS Matthew 27:25 All the people answered, “His blood (of Jesus) is on us and on our children!” ******AND WOMEN SHOULD KEEP THEIR MOUTHS SHUT 1 Corinthians 14:35 "If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church." the Bible: the WORST INSTRUCTION BOOK EVER WRITTEN!

Is it wrong to feel enjoyment as I watch these Christian congregations from different parts of the country shoot themselves in the foot? Though an Atheist, I usually am for people believing in whatever it is they want to believe in. But it's instances like this where I feel it should perish, as ignorance and religion truly don't mix.

It's probably their comsumption with the thought of gays having relations (by that I mean doing the 'do') that make people act this way. It's a natural thought process for a straight person to be a little disgusted when thinking of gay relations. Different se xual orientations mean different wiring in the brains, thus an aversion to what you're not wired for (my theory based on assumption). Thing is, human are vastly diverse in many aspects but still the same. Our key to survial lies in learning to work wth different people (my belief), no matter their difference. Higher brain functions will prevail oneday, those that cannot adapt will follow the way of the dodo. The culture of this intolerant behavior will be extinguished by globalization and the communication power of the internet. It's already happening with the newer generations. Hope does shine through the madness of this world...

If you can't get your mind out of someone else's bedroom, that is your problem, not theirs. The Bible calls many things "abomination" that religious people ignore and allows things people today abhor. Everyone picks and chooses the teachings they agree with thereby defining their own religion.

Christ Philosophy can be summed up below and is quite relevant today. BTW Christ NEVER condemned hom ose xau1ity and in fact condoned it:

Mary got pregnant from a man's sperm. Period. There is no "holy spirit" and no god.
The whole bible is pure bs from page one. Anyone brainwashed will not be able to face the truth.

Unless you have attended a service there, you speak from total ignorance.

@ Bill. One need not enter and stay in a filthy room in order to decide that it is filthy. One glance, one whiff, one quick listen to the sounds of the crawling vermin, is enough to make a correct decision. That is, unless sidling up to repulsion is your particular fetish and idea of a really good time.

Bill the cat wrote, " Unless you have attended a service there, you speak from total ignorance."

So is the video a fake?

"The video, which surfaced on YouTube last week, shows a child in front of the congregation, singing "I know that God is right, and somebody's wrong... ain't no hômo going to make it to heaven."

The congregation erupts in applause at those lines, which the unidentified boy repeats as the pastor looks on."

If the church doesn't preach hate, what do you call this?

Not total ignorance, Bill. There's a lot to infer from the audience's reaction to that particular line from the song. (different Mike btw)

Appeal to ridicule is all you got... brainless twit.

Bill, given a choice between an " appeal to ridicule" and your blantant appeal to hate, the former is preferable. Its odd that your nom de plume is a character from a cartoon that routinely ridiculed fundamentalists, or do you just savor the irony?
