We don't teach hate, says church where anti-homosexual song filmed

By Ismael Estrada, CNN

Greensburg, Indiana (CNN) - About 20 protesters gathered on Sunday outside the Apostolic Truth Tabernacle here to voice opposition to a viral online video that was taped in the church and shows a young child singing song with lyrics that offer a harsh message for homosexuals.

The video, which surfaced on YouTube last week, shows a child in front of the congregation, singing "I know that God is right, and somebody's wrong... ain't no homo going to make it to heaven."

The congregation erupts in applause at those lines, which the unidentified boy repeats as the pastor looks on.

At another point in the video a voice is heard shouting,"That’s my boy."

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

In the first Sunday service since the video surfaced, congregants arrived to the church as protesters jeered them over the video.

A church leader, who would not give his name, told CNN that journalists were not allowed inside the church and declined to offer anyone from church leadership to comment on the video.

The leader said that he needed to be cautious about letting outsiders into the church because it had received threats over the video and asked CNN to leave the premises.

Church videos with harsh words for gays go viral online

The local sheriff's office said the church had not reported any verifiable threats.

No one answered the door at the home of Jeff Sangl, the church's pastor.

The video of the singing boy was the latest in a string of viral anti-gay videos that have surfaced from independent churches.  Those videos have been resoundingly condemned by religious leaders, even by conservatives who believe homosexual sex is a sin.

The Apostolic Truth Tabernacle posted a statement on its website that says in part: "The Pastor and members of Apostolic Truth Tabernacle do not condone, teach, or practice hate of any person for any reason.”

The pastor's son, Josh Sangl, told CNN his father was away on vacation and that there was much more to the video than we were being told, though he wouldn’t elaborate.

The majority of the church members wouldn’t comment about the controversy or respond to questions about the parents of the young boy.

"I think it's blown out of proportion, you know," said Robert Kirby, who is not a church member but was attending Sunday's church service in support of his daughter, who teaches Sunday School there. "They love everybody.

"They don't love sin though," he said. "It's all in the Bible."

I am so happy to be atheist! I'd rather jump off a cliff than become one of these bigoted, rabid, sad morons. And then these are the people who say atheists have no morals... Apparently we have better morals than these pathetic excuses for human beings.

I love this. Conservatives scream about "indoctrination" and then teach hate-speech to a 7-year old. Does anyone honestly think he made this song up? If so, grow up.

I highly doubt that child even comprehended what he was saying. The adults are at fault here and should be held accountable. That child will grow up with a tremendous amount of hatred if they keep brainwashing him with bigotry.

Sure you don't teach hate, just like that preacher who said all gay people should be rounded up and put in cages doesn't hate gay people.

  4. Atheist > Fairy Tales

Leave it to religious wack jobs to demonstrate hatred and intolerence based on a belief that there is an invisible father figure in the sky.

News flash, said invisible father figure in the sky, if any, is an absentee landlord. We are here on this planet alive and we must all learn to live with each other.

Put away your childish toys and grow up.

    God is imaginary.
It's only in your mind. It doesn't exist. It's make-believe.
    It's a delusion.

First of all, I sincerely wish atheists would stay off religious stories, news items, etc. Don't you have another venue to spew your rhetoric?

Secondly, I agree with 'hate the sin, love the sinner.' Therefore, I will hate what these hypocritical Christians are doing and love them, and ask God's forgiveness of them. As Christ Himself said, “they know not what they do.”

LizardMom, it's very open minded of you to tell atheists to leave this page. I personally am a unicornarian, so I feel welcome to stay.

That being established, I think before you start telling people they've sinned – anyone, that is – you should establish that sin is an actual thing, and establish what are and are not sins. If you're going to appeal to the bible, then please establish as fact that god inspired a catholic council to decide which scriptures would be included in the bible as the official canon of Jesus's legacy.

This is a brilliant post. Nothing that religious people are up to is ever of any concern to people who are not religious. Especially when they're acting like an intolerant batch of asshats. That makes perfect sense. Way to go, LizardMom!

When fundiots (fundamentalist îdiots) come out preaching hate and intolerance, and legislating hate and discrimination, who is it that speaks against it? It sure as hell isn't the "good christians".

Also, please post the book, chapter, and verse where your god says to love the sinner and hate the sin?

[hint -You can't. Because it isn't in your bible – anywhere. It's a quote from Gandhi – a Hindu. In actuallity, your god commands you go out and kill gay people.]

To say you hate the sin but love the sinner is just justification for your prejudice. It makes you feel charitable to say you "love" him anyway.

Why is it that just if someone doesn't agree with something(choices, lifestyle, whatnot) that they automatically are labeled as someone who hates?

    June 5, 2012 at 12:46 pm |
    • Charlie

Because it's true. Back in the 1950s when Blacks were being hanged from trees, do you think that was done out of love or hate?

      June 5, 2012 at 12:49 pm |
    • iwonder

But is anyone being hung today? No. The point I am trying to make is that you can love a person and treat a person with respect without loving or accepting what they do.

      June 5, 2012 at 12:52 pm |
    • ialsoagree

iwonder, it's fine if you don't like something that someone else does, that's definitely your right.

However, attempting to limit the rights of those people through laws, or raising children – under no empirical or demonstrable basis – to believe things that lead them to similar opinions as you IS wrong.

      June 5, 2012 at 12:57 pm |
    • sam

@iwonder- it's just that the method of hanging has changed.

      June 5, 2012 at 1:01 pm |
    • CatSh

@iwonder – better check the news. People have been targeted for violence for their s3xual preference. In America. One was hung from a fence. You don't get hate without violence.

      June 5, 2012 at 1:03 pm |
    • Charlie

What I used is an example of how intolerance works.

No, I don't believe anyone is being hung anymore, but people are being shot, beaten up, verbally assaulted and threatened, even by members of the clergy. Just a week ago Pastor Sean Harris of Berean Baptist Church in Fayetteville, NC (what is it with North Carolina?) suggested to his congregation that they beat their kids if they showed any signs of being gay.

Is that love? That's not even hating the sin and loving the sinner. If you want a person harmed that's hate in my book.

      June 5, 2012 at 1:03 pm |
    • YeahRight

"The point I am trying to make is that you can love a person and treat a person with respect without loving or accepting what they do."

You're blocking their civil rights that's why and yes the U S Supreme Court ruled marriage is a civil right. The experts have stated that heterosexual behavior and homosexual behavior are normal aspects of human sexuality. Despite the persistence of stereotypes that portray lesbian, gay, and bisexual people as disturbed, several decades of research and clinical experience have led all mainstream medical and mental health organizations in this country to conclude that these orientations represent normal forms of human experience. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the American School Counselor Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the National Association of SocialWorkers, together representing more than 480,000 mental health professionals, have all taken the position that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and thus is not something that needs to or can be “cured."

  8. Bibletruth

The bible not only advises you to judge, it commands you to judge. It commands you to judge ideas, situations, etc. never motive, as you cannot read the heart. This is why only God can be the judge. Therefore one can and should point out sin. One can never say such and such person will go to hell, or to heaven. In fact a christian should not think in those lines. It is perfectly proper to judge ideas and actions for what they are, good or evil (sinful) and to admonish anyone or all against sin.

we need religion to keep the ignorant masses in line and subdued, but when it gets too nutty we need to crush those that step out of line by exposing them to the reality of their fairy tale beliefs. There's no heaven or hell, life just ends, pretty much like before you were born... did you know you weren't alive??? its like going to sleep forever, you won't even know it.... sad but reality isn't defined in terms of happy and sad, as much as we'd like it to be or have been taught that it is, LIFE DOESN'T HAVE HAPPY ENDINGS.... JUST ENDINGS...

This is your choice to believe and have faith that there is no heaven or hell. I have faith in the opposite and believe that Jesus died for our sins so that by following him and his inspired word that I might be saved. --------
Blake, do all human beings alive have the same base human value, as created by God? If so, then how can there be only 1 way to salvation, if every human being on the planet is not privy to it? You believe what you want, I believe in God. But, recognize that religion is a creation of human beings, in an attempt to explain things that are just not explainable. There are millions of human beings(creations of God) in this world who will never even hear the name Jesus, never open a bible. This is not their choice, but a result of the culture they were born into. Are these people less deserving of "being saved", because they don't follow Jesus? They've never heard of Jesus, how could they follow him?!? You believe in God, without following all the man-made tenants and traditions of religion because they don't have all the answers.

See the only problem with this is that Blake really doesn't "believe" He is only practicing his faith incase there IS a god that he meets after death. THAT is not faith, that is an insurance policy, and he pays his premiums in church on sunday.
Blake - god is all knowing remember ? he knows what is in your heart. He knows that your faith is nothing more than window dressing. So you are damned to hell like all we atheists. ( well not really because atheists don't believe in hell either )

All CNN church stories are of the hate-monger type. Of course your view is going to be skewed if this is all you know. The reality is that the hate-monger churches make up a tiny fraction of the churches worldwide. I the same is true for islam because of their extremist problem.

Im a Christian and i fully believe in love and tolerance towards all people no matter what they do or dont do. These simple truths are what Jesus was about. He surrounded himself with people who were outcasts during his life and showed them love and compassion always. I believe that it is wrong but no one has the right to judge. He who is without sin cast the first stone. Each and everyone of us sin and they are all equally undesirable in the eyes of God. If you are a Christian u need to practice what you preach and be an example for those who dont know the truth of Jesus and his love and what he stood for. Pray for those who need it and those who say they dont and let your life and actions bear witness of the christian lifestyle.

Being born gay is no more wrong, immoral, or a sin than being born left-handed or black. And not that long ago religious dolts claimed that being left-handed was a sign of satan and being black was the mark of Cain.

The fact that you choose to ignore the science of sèxual orientation in favor of a book of religious myths is truly sad.

I agree completely. Only God can judge. We all sin. However it does not make God hate us or turn us undesirable in the Lord's eyes. God is about love and will give us every chance to realize that.

For me personally, I will state what is a sin and what is not but if you wish to live your life a certain way I am not going to hate you for it. I got enough going on in mine to worry about yours.

As for the we just die and nothing happens statements here, we'll see 🙂 Ultimately it is the only way to prove if God does exist.

Wow?! So much hate and venom from both sides. I happen to beieve in God and His Word. I do not condemn or judge any one. I do have my beliefs and stand by them. However, I will not shove them down your throat. We all have a choice and every choice has a consequence, whether we believe it or not. We do have the right to RESPECTFULLY disagree with each others views. That does not give me the right to throw stones nor does it give you the right to do likewise. Everyone, take a step back and breathe!!!! We are not going to all agree, but we have to allow each person to live the life they choose. Peace and have a great day!!!!

Like OOO, I also cannot understand how any reasonable person can call the bible "God's word", as if God crafted the words alone. Believe what you want, I believe in God, but try to stay somewhat grounded in reality as well. Human beings wrote the bible. Human beings edited the bible. Human beings selected the individual works that comprise the bible. Human beings left out equally relevant works of the time from the bible, because those works didn't send quite the correct message that the human beings wanted. And, human beings continue to edit the bible by publishing new versions. The hand of man is all over the bible, every word. To call it the "word of God" is intellectually insulting.

"We all have a choice and every choice has a consequence, whether we believe it or not."

Being gay isn't a choice, it's not a mental illness and it can't be voluntarily changed. A gay couples family deserves the same equal civil rights as straights. By choosing to block their civil rights you do bring harm.

      These rights include:

      Tax Benefits
-–Filing joint income tax returns with the IRS and state taxing authorities.
-–Creating a "family partnership" under federal tax laws, which allows you to divide business income among family members.

      Estate Planning Benefits
-–Inheriting a share of your spouse's estate.
-–Receiving an exemption from both estate taxes and gift taxes for all property you give or leave to your spouse.
-–Creating life estate trusts that are restricted to married couples, including QTIP trusts, QDOT trusts, and marital deduction trusts.
-–Obtaining priority if a conservator needs to be appointed for your spouse – that is, someone to make financial and/or medical decisions on your spouse's behalf.

      Government Benefits
-–Receiving Social Security, Medicare, and disability benefits for spouses.
-–Receiving veterans' and military benefits for spouses, such as those for education, medical care, or special loans.
      -–Receiving public as-sistance benefits.
      -–Employment Benefits
-–Obtaining insurance benefits through a spouse's employer.
-–Taking family leave to care for your spouse during an illness.
-–Receiving wages, workers' compensation, and retirement plan benefits for a deceased spouse.
-–Taking bereavement leave if your spouse or one of your spouse's close relatives dies.

      Medical Benefits
-–Visiting your spouse in a hospital intensive care unit or during restricted visiting hours in other parts of a medical facility.
-–Making medical decisions for your spouse if he or she becomes incapacitated and unable to express wishes for treatment.

      Death Benefits
-–Consenting to after-death examinations and procedures.
-–Making burial or other final arrangements.

      Family Benefits
-–Filing for stepparent or joint adoption.
-–Applying for joint foster care rights.
-–Receiving equitable division of property if you divorce.
-–Receiving spousal or child support, child custody, and visitation if you divorce.

      Housing Benefits
-–Living in neighborhoods zoned for "families only."
-–Automatically renewing leases signed by your spouse.

      Consumer Benefits

Peace to you as well brother! I agree with you. GOD loves all sinners but NOT their sins.

"I agree with you. GOD loves all sinners but NOT their sins."

Nowhere in your bible does your god condemn the saved loving respectful relationship of a gay couple as we know and understand it today. Duh!

When did it become a members-only church? Since there is really been no threats to anyones life in the church why would other be excluded? I smell a rat!!!

I totally agree. Ive grown up in church all my life and Ive never seen people turned away simply because they werent members. The church is not above giving an account for its actions. Also what is done in darkness will be brought to light. The idea that these pastors go into hiding, dont want to comment or open up their church so that people can see what they teach and explain their stance, is troubling.

One who believes that when they die, they are going to a man in the sky, has a weak mind.

I concur.. It's delusional to believe in sky daddies.. The church with all it's tax free billions and words of a man made book, has the audacity to "claim" this nonsense whilst children all over the world are suffering from hunger and disease.. No Gods, No Masters.. I'm glad that I'm free from mental oppression...

So do you believe there was a bang and all of a sudden the laws of physics went into action, matter sprang out of nothingness and willed itself to begin evolving? Not trying to start something, just curious. I can see how both sides could look crazy to the other.

      June 5, 2012 at 1:17 pm |
    • jungleboo

@Nate. To presume that the Big Bang or any other process just WHAMMED into place and we walked out onto the stage with nary a hair out of place is not getting the basic idea of agnosticism/atheism.

Ever hear of splitting the atom? As in The Atom Bomb? If human beings have cracked that code already, why is it beyond reason to accept that any primary singularity (not necessary to name it or make it a puppet with human features) would, over trillions x trillions of years (Earth years, no big deal on the cosmic stage), develop into the spectacular mathematical, geometric, organic, neutronic paradise we call our Universe.

Quantum physics even hazards a guess that the Universe is not even really there until it has an observer. The problem with fundies, is that they stare into their book to the exclusion of being open to ideas and possibility. In fact it is a fundamental aspect of their life not to question or to go looking for interesting answers, for fear of "losing their soul", whatever that is

The Agnostics and Atheists posting here have happily let go of the idea that a giant human being is out there pulling the strings. That's all. Why is that threatening to anyone? It's a delightful, relaxed ride across the Universe. Exactly what we were born to do, before we were taken into a church by our less than enlightened parents.

Why do some people think about s-e-x when talking about hom-ose-xuals? Do they think about s-e-x when talking about heter-os-exuals? If the answer is yes, then the problem is thinking about s-e-x, not hom-os-exuals.

They are quite obsessed with the subject of s-e-x. Back to the topic, IMO what they did to that child is child abuse. That poor thing has no choice, but has to do what he's told to do.

Religion by it's very nature must teach intolerance. One can't be right if the other is right and since each must be right they must be intolerance of opposing views. Won't it be nice when we finally mature as a species to the point where we don't need myths?

You have expressed something fundamental without realizing it. Religion is basically totally intolerant. If God is creator and universal king and gives me my life and sustains my life, is all powerful, all knowing, etc., how dare you insult this God...thats worthy of death. And it is. If any worldly ruler had near those attributes probably 99+% of the world's population would agree that to insult him would be high treason worthy of death.

Enter the true God and His Son Jesus Christ: "whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely"...let the wheat and tares grow together until the harvest (until all is manifest)...if you love me keep my commandments...come let us reason together...I will give you a new heart...etc. Christianity is absolutely radically different than any other philosophy, religion, etc. Unfortunately, few have "let" the Holy spirit have His way with them.

Isn’t atheism, by its very nature, also intolerant? I mean, does atheism allow for it to be wrong and theism to be correct? Does not your critique apply to your own worldview?

To the left, everything is hate if it counters their selfish opinions; yet for some unknown reason they think they are "tolerant" and God is intolerant. If you don't know God you shouldn't try to reinterpret what His Word says because your automatically biased and will twist it around for your own convenience.

    June 5, 2012 at 12:20 pm |

Hate is hate. No one on the left is asking you to do anything. You don't see rallys asking for the banning of religion.
You can deflect all you like but when you look in the mirror there's a monster looking back and we both know it.
There, now you can hate me too.

Demonstrate that your – or any – god exists. Then, and ONLY then, can you teach it to children as fact.

Anything else is no different than child abuse.

    • jim tom

Wow, your argument is so full of holes it's ridiculous. The Bible says it's a sin to worship any other Gods. Should we make a law banning all religions except Christianity? No?

Why is my opinion selfish when all I do is ask for tolerance among us all, when I believe that the least among us deserve the same respect and love as the mightiest? If you consider that selfish, I pity you, and hope that God, in his infinite mercy, forgives you.

You say if someone doesn't 'know' God that we are biased on interpreting 'his' word. Aren't you biased as a believer of God? Your argument is basically that unless you are already convinced by us churchgoers and set in our ways then you will use the Bible to spread your message. Which is complete hypocrisy.

@ialsoagree – “Demonstrate that your – or any – god exists. Then, and ONLY then, can you teach it to children as fact. Anything else is no different than child abuse.”
By your reasoning, an atheist should not teach his/her children about atheism, because an atheist cannot demonstrate that God does NOT exist.
