We don't teach hate, says church where anti-homosexual song filmed

By Ismael Estrada, CNN

Greensburg, Indiana (CNN) - About 20 protesters gathered on Sunday outside the Apostolic Truth Tabernacle here to voice opposition to a viral online video that was taped in the church and shows a young child singing song with lyrics that offer a harsh message for homosexuals.

The video, which surfaced on YouTube last week, shows a child in front of the congregation, singing "I know that God is right, and somebody's wrong... ain't no homo going to make it to heaven."

The congregation erupts in applause at those lines, which the unidentified boy repeats as the pastor looks on.

At another point in the video a voice is heard shouting,"That’s my boy."

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

In the first Sunday service since the video surfaced, congregants arrived to the church as protesters jeered them over the video.

A church leader, who would not give his name, told CNN that journalists were not allowed inside the church and declined to offer anyone from church leadership to comment on the video.

The leader said that he needed to be cautious about letting outsiders into the church because it had received threats over the video and asked CNN to leave the premises.

Church videos with harsh words for gays go viral online

The local sheriff's office said the church had not reported any verifiable threats.

No one answered the door at the home of Jeff Sangl, the church's pastor.

The video of the singing boy was the latest in a string of viral anti-gay videos that have surfaced from independent churches.  Those videos have been resoundingly condemned by religious leaders, even by conservatives who believe homosexual sex is a sin.

The Apostolic Truth Tabernacle posted a statement on its website that says in part: "The Pastor and members of Apostolic Truth Tabernacle do not condone, teach, or practice hate of any person for any reason.”

The pastor's son, Josh Sangl, told CNN his father was away on vacation and that there was much more to the video than we were being told, though he wouldn’t elaborate.

The majority of the church members wouldn’t comment about the controversy or respond to questions about the parents of the young boy.

"I think it's blown out of proportion, you know," said Robert Kirby, who is not a church member but was attending Sunday's church service in support of his daughter, who teaches Sunday School there. "They love everybody.

"They don't love sin though," he said. "It's all in the Bible."

To hate someone for being gay is the same as hating someone for being left-handed or for having flaming red hair. They are minorities and easy targets for the hatemongers. Please quit quoting the Bible–or should I say misquoting the Bible. Better yet, abusing the Bible. It is a great work of fiction with a great deal of history and a greater deal of nonsense.

Bethany, imagine being labor and your Doctor is gay. Gonna quit, and say nope, he's evil, I'll just tuck this baby in. Or how about you almost drowned, and the lifeguard is gay? Because he's gay and trying to save your life not because it's his job but what he can do to make others happy or whatever, you're going to get up and tell him no thanks, your an abomination.

What if say you have a brother and he's gay, burn him?

Although I do get disgusted by a church advocating hatred of any kind, I do have to agree with some of the folks here on the comment section that these people have a right to their opinions. Sure, some of their opinions are absurd, but that doesn't mean we should start bashing them over it. If we do that, then we are no different than they are for we are acting childishly against opinions we don't agree with. Case in point: the protests against the church that had the child singing anti-gay lyrics.

There are better ways to handle people who don't agree with you. It's called ignoring them. It's not that hard. Really. A chimp with only two brain cells with a single synapse can figure this out. We're more evolved than chimps, yet we can't figure that out? Dominant species on planet, my ***.

Don't forget, they are building strength to deny civil rights to gay men and women. That is the point of all this. They ARE the new KKK. We ARE the minority insisting that we be heard. To perceive it as meaningless rudeness back and forth for 40 pages is missing the pop fly ball..

How terribly sad that a church would encourage a child to hate and sin! How sad they they are teaching these children to follow Satan and carry out HIS will, instead of the will of the Lord!

    June 5, 2012 at 10:50 pm |
    • Edwardo

Interesting point. I always wonder if Xtians ever stop to think that maybe Satan is using them to ensure gays never convert, and the Xtians hate would send them to eternal damnation as well. I'm an atheist... just sayin' ..

      June 5, 2012 at 10:53 pm |
    • LittleHero

Teach these children to follow their own moral compass and they will figure it out and end up being good people. Stop blaming the lord or the devil for your own behavior.

      June 5, 2012 at 10:59 pm |
    • jungleboo

Religious indoctrination of the young is Child Abuse, because the child is deprived of the opportunity to say NO without the additional burden of being eternally damned to hell. Schools of Philosophy are preferable, where children are introduced to ideas for discussion, without a "right answer" forced upon them as a catechism. The ancient Greeks were on the right path, but had their philosophical understandings burned and buried under the literal dogma of the early church. Bring it all back. The 22nd century will thank all of us.

Reposting a comment that makes sense!

So we've come to the point where being against something, anything, equates to hatred. What a wonderful age we all live in.

People should be allowed to believe what they believe...period! Being against something doesn't equate to hate. Do the people who protested against this Church also hate? They have their opinion and they are against this Church preaching the Bible...so, do they hate these Christians whose opinions differ from their own?

    June 5, 2012 at 10:43 pm |
    • jungleboo

The operative word here is "preach". It is an unfortunate fact that Christians are "called" to preach and convert. This is annoying to most human beings, because the concept infers that the Christian knows better, and the object of his dizzy spells is lacking in something real important. WRONG.

There are spiritual experiences that do not include converting or correcting someone else. If you bought into this habit, it's on you. Don't turn on us and accuse us of intolerance. We were minding our own business and working happily towards our own civil rights one step at a time. But then the dumbazz preachers in the dumbazz temples of doom get on their high horse and ignite their congregation to hoot and holler and save the world from what they consider evil.

So you have our attention. Don't like it? Make you feel like something is wrong? There is. Can you guess what it is !? You are trying to preach to the people who are logical, rational, intelligent, educated, experienced, and who are NOT the people in your pews.

That's a good word for those church seats. ...pew...

Bethany..I think you forgot to engage your brain when you started typing your response..this is not a group of people they are against a certain policy or unfair law..they are actively preaching hatred and bigotry under the guise of religion..just because it is being preached in a church does not make it right..hatred and bigotry disguised by anything is still hate and bigotry..if you are justifying teaching children this kind of ideology, then you Christians have a much bigger problem and you need to take a long hard look in the mirror for there you see a much bigger sinner..that of being a HYPOCRITE!

"Being against something doesn't equate to hate."

So if I am against blacks using the same restroom facilities, drinking fountains, and public transportation, I do not hate blacks and I am not a bigot? What if I am against blacks getting married or having any equal rights? Do I not hate blacks? Or am I just against blacks being equal? Thats what it ultimately comes down to...equality for ALL citizens of this country.

Don't like it? Maybe your church should start paying taxes.

Didn't this Jesus person say "Love thy neighbor as thyself?" I don't think he said "love only people who believe whatever distorted version of the Bible that you believe in." Most, if not all religions teach Love, tolerence, compassion and forgiveness It's the fringe elements that don't embrace these tenents that give religion a bad name!

Sorry Tom not buying it why else would you stand up for gays unless you are one?

      June 5, 2012 at 10:03 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

Gee, I wonder... why would anyone stand up for African Americans, unless one were black? Why would anyone stand up for Jews, unless one were Jewish?

Maybe because it's the right thing to do, you sh1twit.

    • Tommiboy123

Sorry Bethany. I'm married 22 years and my wife and I both support gay rights. Unfortunately she doesn't have a single gay bone in her body (a little would be nice!)

I believe that "Bethany", is, like many other 'plants', nothing more than a troll who posts from a devil's advocate point of view. Really, people, can't you do a little better than that? Pathetic.

      June 5, 2012 at 10:09 pm |
    • Tommiboy123

Enlighten us Bethany. You say that the bible says "Gays are Evil". Please give us that passage where it specifically says GAYS ARE EVIL.

Why do you support something so vile? My oldest son came out to me last year and I told him that even though I loved him he would find no support from me until he changed his wicked ways. I pray for him everyday that he will meet a nice girl and give up his lifestyle so I can welcome him back into my home.

No kidding, NTJC. Who'd want to spend a minute, much less eternity, with someone like Bethany or HS?

The lake of fire looks more inviting every time I read one of their posts...

      June 5, 2012 at 10:14 pm |
    • Tommiboy123

He's not welcome in your home??????? Wow.....what a terrible mother.

    • Tommiboy123

Is that what being a christian is? Throwing your child to the curb because he sinned? What if he takes the Lord's name in vain? Or works on Sunday? A sin is a sin right? Or does it just apply to the ones YOU judge as being worse??

      Bethany,

Your non-existent god is more important than your son. Hopefully he understands he is better off this way.

I don't believe a word "Bethany" has posted. It's nothing more than a troll. It doesn't even have a son or a daughter. It's a phony figment posting to get a kick, a reaction, a response.

      Get lost, herbie.

      June 5, 2012 at 10:24 pm |
    • Bethany

Yom you're the troll pretending to be a woman and attacking everything I say!

      "Yom" ?!

Wow, Bethany Troll, get a grip.

    • Tommiboy123

Relax Bethany, it's not like you would toss your own kid out into the street.....oh yeah, guess you would. So did you say to yourself "What would Jesus do" before you turned your back on him?

      June 5, 2012 at 10:40 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

Don't kid yourself. "Bethany" never had a kid, never had a marriage, never had a life. Bethany doesn't exist at all.

      June 5, 2012 at 10:42 pm |
    • Tommiboy123

Probably right. But she sounds just screwed up and self rightous enough to be believable

Tom Tom, to me....to me..., you were Adam from the Sistine Chapel, all relaxed and sure of himself, kind of pointing around at things, all happy to be cool an' in control. Now that you are out of the closet, I can only think of Mary Poppins and "Spit Spot!", no nonsense, always a steady retort to the misbehavers. It will never be the same between us. I'm thinking Edwardo from now on, kind of bold and brash.

"Gays will never find their way to jesus"

I hope not! There are enough crazy people on the planet. We don't need to add to the list.

    • just cant believe the hate eee

OMG...Bethany...you think only gay people stand up for gay rights?
Even in NC about 40% of the people voted FOR gay marraige. So...40% of people inNC are gay...wow?

Percentages of people in other states are even higher.

      I guess you're right..Gayness is contagious

Are you just some insane narcissist that craves attention? You just cant possibly be that stupid
