We don't teach hate, says church where anti-homosexual song filmed

By Ismael Estrada, CNN

Greensburg, Indiana (CNN) - About 20 protesters gathered on Sunday outside the Apostolic Truth Tabernacle here to voice opposition to a viral online video that was taped in the church and shows a young child singing song with lyrics that offer a harsh message for homosexuals.

The video, which surfaced on YouTube last week, shows a child in front of the congregation, singing "I know that God is right, and somebody's wrong... ain't no homo going to make it to heaven."

The congregation erupts in applause at those lines, which the unidentified boy repeats as the pastor looks on.

At another point in the video a voice is heard shouting,"That’s my boy."

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

In the first Sunday service since the video surfaced, congregants arrived to the church as protesters jeered them over the video.

A church leader, who would not give his name, told CNN that journalists were not allowed inside the church and declined to offer anyone from church leadership to comment on the video.

The leader said that he needed to be cautious about letting outsiders into the church because it had received threats over the video and asked CNN to leave the premises.

Church videos with harsh words for gays go viral online

The local sheriff's office said the church had not reported any verifiable threats.

No one answered the door at the home of Jeff Sangl, the church's pastor.

The video of the singing boy was the latest in a string of viral anti-gay videos that have surfaced from independent churches.  Those videos have been resoundingly condemned by religious leaders, even by conservatives who believe homosexual sex is a sin.

The Apostolic Truth Tabernacle posted a statement on its website that says in part: "The Pastor and members of Apostolic Truth Tabernacle do not condone, teach, or practice hate of any person for any reason.”

The pastor's son, Josh Sangl, told CNN his father was away on vacation and that there was much more to the video than we were being told, though he wouldn’t elaborate.

The majority of the church members wouldn’t comment about the controversy or respond to questions about the parents of the young boy.

"I think it's blown out of proportion, you know," said Robert Kirby, who is not a church member but was attending Sunday's church service in support of his daughter, who teaches Sunday School there. "They love everybody.

"They don't love sin though," he said. "It's all in the Bible."

People who preach hate just end up being hateful people. It's tough to see Jesus associating with such people except to heal them.

      @Nilkinggary

You must not be very familiar with the teachings of Jesus. Let me refresh your memory:

"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn 'a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law–a man's enemies will be the members of his own household.' Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me."

That doesn't sound all that loving to me. Did you even bother to read the Bible?

At 33, Jesus still wasn't married, preached love and hung out with the same 12 guys all the time.

Heck...odd that you seem focused on a 2000 year ago person's $exual orientation.

Heaven is the ultimate in totalitarian socialism. So why do so many "conservatives" want to end up there?

    June 4, 2012 at 9:07 pm |
    • Because

Because they want everything handed to them for free.
Because they do not want to be held accountable for anything they do.
Because they think they are better than other people for no good reason at all.
Because they are not actually "conservative" as this would mean having to think in order to actually conserve anything.
Because they love to hate and hate to love.
Because their fake bible can be interpreted whatever way each person wants.
Because they really are not all that intelligent and need to be told what to think.

Considering Jesus preached peace and to love your neighbor, of course. Those who preach violence against another being aren't Christians. They aren't doing the work of Jesus or God. You can't be truly Christian and preach violence and hatred.

"The profession of shaman has many advantages. It offers high status with a safe livelihood free of work in the dreary, sweaty sense. In most societies it offers legal privileges and immunities not granted to other men. But it is hard to see how a man who has been given a mandate from on High to spread tidings of joy to all mankind can be seriously interested in taking up a collection to pay his salary; it causes one to suspect that the shaman is on the moral level of any other con man. But it is a lovely work if you can stomach it."

Religious indoctrination of the young is Child Abuse disguised in story and song, for it refuses man's finest accomplishment, logic and rationality. Logic and rationality have brought us GPS, Google Earth, the Internet, and the freedom to denounce organized religion for the sham that it is. Humanity has discovered that it is basically good, and not the horror that we have been brainwashed to "believe" was true. Start Philosophy classes for the young, and watch the world blossom. The future will thank us.

Why is anyone surprised? The Christian search has preached hate for centuries. And not just preached. They are more than willing to kill you for self perpetuation.

    June 4, 2012 at 8:59 pm |
  14. Frank

"They love everybody. "They don't love sin though,"

That may be, but the song wasn't speaking out against any sin, it was speaking out against a particular type of person. This is hate speech.

Here's the difference. I could say that I think Christians should lay off the birth control subject, and dispute what they have to say on the subject.

Or, I could say that Christians are horrid humans that need to be tortured and imprisoned forever for speaking out against birth control as they are sick, disgusting people.

The first is commenting on what we disagree on, the second is hate speech. What they are teaching their children to sing is hate.
