We don't teach hate, says church where anti-homosexual song filmed

By Ismael Estrada, CNN

Greensburg, Indiana (CNN) - About 20 protesters gathered on Sunday outside the Apostolic Truth Tabernacle here to voice opposition to a viral online video that was taped in the church and shows a young child singing song with lyrics that offer a harsh message for homosexuals.

The video, which surfaced on YouTube last week, shows a child in front of the congregation, singing "I know that God is right, and somebody's wrong... ain't no homo going to make it to heaven."

The congregation erupts in applause at those lines, which the unidentified boy repeats as the pastor looks on.

At another point in the video a voice is heard shouting,"That’s my boy."

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

In the first Sunday service since the video surfaced, congregants arrived to the church as protesters jeered them over the video.

A church leader, who would not give his name, told CNN that journalists were not allowed inside the church and declined to offer anyone from church leadership to comment on the video.

The leader said that he needed to be cautious about letting outsiders into the church because it had received threats over the video and asked CNN to leave the premises.

Church videos with harsh words for gays go viral online

The local sheriff's office said the church had not reported any verifiable threats.

No one answered the door at the home of Jeff Sangl, the church's pastor.

The video of the singing boy was the latest in a string of viral anti-gay videos that have surfaced from independent churches.  Those videos have been resoundingly condemned by religious leaders, even by conservatives who believe homosexual sex is a sin.

The Apostolic Truth Tabernacle posted a statement on its website that says in part: "The Pastor and members of Apostolic Truth Tabernacle do not condone, teach, or practice hate of any person for any reason.”

The pastor's son, Josh Sangl, told CNN his father was away on vacation and that there was much more to the video than we were being told, though he wouldn’t elaborate.

The majority of the church members wouldn’t comment about the controversy or respond to questions about the parents of the young boy.

"I think it's blown out of proportion, you know," said Robert Kirby, who is not a church member but was attending Sunday's church service in support of his daughter, who teaches Sunday School there. "They love everybody.

"They don't love sin though," he said. "It's all in the Bible."

That's why the experts have proven you WRONG and you're nothing but a prejudice bigot.

Heterosexual behavior and homosexual behavior are normal aspects of human sexuality. Despite the persistence of stereotypes that portray lesbian, gay, and bisexual people as disturbed, several decades of research and clinical experience have led all mainstream medical and mental health organizations in this country to conclude that these orientations represent normal forms of human experience. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the American School Counselor Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the National Association of SocialWorkers, together representing more than 480,000 mental health professionals, have all taken the position that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and thus is not something that needs to or can be “cured."

Everything written about gays in the past were done by bias and prejudice people. That's the point! A gay relationship is about two consenting adults having a long term loving relationship with a family. A pedophile is about trying to have sex with children, a child can't consent and the relationship is harmful to the child, it's illegal. Wow are you really this stupid. Duh!

Here's a wrench for ya. My straight, southern baptist father spent 13 years in a state pen for molesting two children ages 5 and 7. One girl and one boy. He told me how being gay was such a sin the last time we talked. Seems like he probably attends your church. We don't talk anymore. He is pathethic. As well he quotes the Bible and and references as you have. You have no facts to back you up. If you want his child watch link, I can send it you boob. FYI, I am gay have one daughter fully grown and well balanced. She is happily straight married. She would laugh at you .

Back to the argument, I gave a few examples of research on more than one person, on populations. You raised a (probably) healthy kid etc etc. what that does have to do with these kinds of research?

Biblical cites an "expert" who is anything but an expert, and writes for the fundiot rag World Nut Daily.

He/she was asked to provide citations to actual peer-reviewed scientific research that supports his/her contention.

Instead, Biblical does a prototypical fundiot dodge and refuses to provide the evidence.

Why do these fundiot cretinss do this?

Apparently, Biblical is too fûcking stupid to understand that google is a verb as well as a noun.

WND is a fundiot (fundamentalist idiot) paper/werbsite that your source works for. They purposefully choose to be ignorant about science.

NARTH is a fundiot group who thinks gays are icky. They purposefully choose to be ignorant about science.

AIG is a fundiot group who thinks the universe poofed into existence 6000 years ago. The purposefully choose to be ignorant about science.

Now, for the 3rd time, post the citations to valid peer-reviewed scientific research that supportss your contentions.

      @Primewonk

I will not take abuse lightly. You cannot spout acronyms to me and expect me to magically understand.

Regarding you rejecting the researcher I gave you, thats your problem. She quotes other authors, is qualified and her work has references for every conclusion she draws. That is good enough for me. Now, if you want to disagree with the conclusions of work by attaching the messenger (author), then that's your prerogative. I can look for other authors but am in no hurry to.

Jeez, you dufus, she is one of the writers for articles in World Nut Daily. And you can't get any more nutters than folks who either contribute, or read this shîtrag.

But you again, dodged the issue and moved the goalposts – so once again, post the citations to valid peer-reviewed scientific research that supports your contentions.

      June 11, 2012 at 3:24 pm |
    • Biblical

I would posit that MAYBE the pressure to be 'politically correct' will reduce the chances that an anti-gay article get published in 'peer reviewed' journals.

For example, when a poverty researcher married to a criminologist found that they were doing work in the same areas and matched section 8 recipient rich areas with high crime areas and they strongly matched, they were demonized, and their results suppressed by the government and the media because showing minority poor peope as criminals is not allowed, whether it be true or not. May such a thing be happening in this area too?

Prayer doesn’t not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!

      @ Laura

Mr. Kodie from TLC show "Sister Wives" has made noises about suing for recognition of polygamist marriage just coz 'the gays have it'. There is one proof my concern isnt theoretical!

As far as certain group not being able to consent legally, maybe that can change. who knows?

If all concerned parties are consenting adults, there's really no reason not to allow polygamy or gay marriage.

See what 'Bet' says above. Prime example of the gay agenda.

Tommorrow if the definition of consent changes (things have changed, women didnt have the right to vote and got it) then p-e-d-o-p-h-i-l-e-s will be next.

Save society and make marriage = 1 man and 1 woman.

      June 10, 2012 at 8:18 pm |
    • Bet

You are a moron well as a liar. Informed consent and the right to vote are two completely different things. Besides, christians were among those who opposed women's rights, as well as black people's right to vote.

Many countries around the world have approved gay marriage and none of their societies have fallen apart. Another lie being preached by bigots.

As far as AIDS goes, that's a lie too. It started in Africa in primates, mutated as viruses are known to do, and was transferred to humans via people eating bush meat. The first deaths from AIDS was a straight couple in 1969. It was known well before Gaëtan Dugas, you idiot.

"Gay agenda" is another lie. If anyone has an agenda, it's christians who try to deny civil rights to people. People like blacks, women, and now gays. Who's next on your agenda, Hispanics? Jews? Muslims?

BTW, I'm straight and support gay rights, just like I supported civil rights for blacks in the 60s and gender rights in the 70s.

Since when is it hate to say that sinners are going to burn in hell? That's one of the hallmarks of a good Bible-believing chruch. We are called to spread the word of God and preach the good news, i.e. that one can be saved by the blood of Jesus. But first, you must repent. It is a failure of our duty as Christians to allow people to throw themselves in hell without warning them. This boy was just singing the truth. It is not hate but love. It only appears as hate to those lost in sin.

      June 8, 2012 at 5:10 pm |
    • PPLRWRD

Exactly EvangilacaL. I might not even believe in Christ but I can see that all they are trying to do is warn people not to fall off a cliff. If the cliff is real, isn't that a good thing. And if the cliff is bull crap, aren't they simple harmless idiots. Either way, it is not a bad thing. Of course the pro gay side are allowed to voice their opinion too. I wouldn't be fair otherwise. But either side voicing their opinion is not hate. Now, if we go to a Nazi Germany world were one side or the other gets thrown into concentration camps for their beliefs, that is hate. But most of these people whinning on both sides don't understand real persecution or hate and they love to throw the word out there.

The military uses the same technique in their schools – eg, sulfisoxazole is the Rx for certain venereal diseases, and i remember this from 1976 because the instructor joked "sulfa sux us all".

I can't allow that statement to be made without an immediate response. You are dead wrong Evangelical. Not one Christian that I know would advocate for your thoughts. Not one.

Sin is sin no matter how big or small. Not one sin keeps us separated from Christ if we accept Him. I suggest you take a much closer look at your life before casting a stone down on hom.ose.xuality. As far as I know, my Bible doesn't have a point system assigned to sins. What it does tell me is to love my neighbor as myself and to spread the good news of Christ.

People like you do nothing but build walls with your intolerance. It's a shame that you feel so strongly about condemning a group of people instead of getting to know them and earning a right to share your story. Even then, who are you to condemn? A person's sin is between them and God. Where do you get the idea you belong in that equation?

Gay relationships have been around for hundreds of years and your god has not punished this nation. If anything with African Americans and women finally getting their civil rights we are becoming more moral. I can never hear this kind of brainwashed rhetoric without thinking of them and I love them dearly, so in fact I love you too.

      June 7, 2012 at 8:14 pm |

      @ Evangelina,

I spent many years in an extremely conservative christian church. I had issues with a lot of things, the bible, the pastor's luxurious home and autos, a few others, but I knew many good people who were true believers in Jesus. They would never represent their faith in the manner that you do. They may not agree that being gay is normal, but they would never act the way you do. They certainly wouldn't support denying civil rights to a minority who aren't hurting anyone, even if they disagreed with them.

I've decided that you aren't even really a christian, just a troll who enjoys being mean online, where you can hide in your anonymity and spew hatred. I also think that you are a gay man who hates himself and doesn't accept himself the way he is. I'm sad for you but won't continue to engage in rational discussion with you. You'll just get my pity.

So you lied when you said that it was a conservative church.

I wonder if you've ever been to an evangelical service. I think not because you don't know the difference between hating the sin and hating the sinner. At least, turn on a good evangelical radio station. Learn about true conservative Christianity and how it can transform your life.

  19. Kindness

    For you.
A thought to consider without a typical ego response

Accept Jesus christ as your lord and saviour. You never know how soon is too late. Transcend the worldly illusion of enslavement.
    The world denounces truth....

Accepting Jesus Christ (for me) resulted in something like seeng a new colour. You will see it .....but will not be able to clearly explain it to anyone else..... Its meant to be that way to transend any selfism within you.

Also... much the world arranges "surrounding dark matter into something to be debated" in such a way that protects/inflates the ego.

The key is be present and transcend our own desire to physically see evidence. We don't know anyways by defending our own perception of dark matter.

Currently.... most of us are constructing our own path that suits our sin lifestyle. Were all sinners. Knowing that we are is often an issue. But both christians and non are sinners.

We don't like to Let go and let god. We want control to some degree. This is what Jesus asks us to do. "Follow me".
It's the hardest thing to do... but is done by letting the truth of scripture lead you (redemptive revelation)... as I said .

Try reading corinthians and see if it makes sense to you. Try it without a pre conceived notion of it being a fairy tale.
    See the truth...
do we do what it says in todays society... is it relevant... so many have not recently read and only hinge their philosophy on what they have heard from som other person...which may have been full of arogance pride or vanity..

Look closely at the economy ponzi, look at how society idolizes Lust , greed , envy, sloth, pride of life, desire for knowledge, desire for power, desire for revencge, gluttony with food etc .

    Trancsend the temporal world.

Just think if you can find any truth you can take with you ....in any of these things. When you die your riches go to someone who will spend away your life..... You will be forgotten.... history will repeat iteslf.... the greatest minds knowledge fade or are eventually plagerzed..... your good deeds will be forgotten and only give you a fleeting temporary reward . your learned teachings are forgotten or mutated..... your gold is transfered back to the rullers that rule you through deception. Your grave will grow over . This is truth .

Trancsend your egoism and free yourself from this dominion of satan. Understand you are a sinner and part of the collective problem of this worldly matrix... Repent.... Repent means knowing (to change) The Holy spirit (within) will convict you beyond what you think you can do by yourself. Grace is given to those who renounce the world. That are" in" the world but not "of " the world.

Evidence follows faith. Faith does not follow evidence..... Faith above reason in Jesus Christ.

Faith comes by Reading or Hearing the word of god from the bible . Ask Jesus in faith for dicernment and start reading the new testament... You will be shocked when you lay down your preconceived notions and ....see and hear truth ... see how christ sets an example ... feel the truth....

    Read Ecclesiastes. Read corinthians.

You cant trancend your own egoism by adapting a world philosophy to suit your needs. Seek the truth in Christ.

Sell all your cleverness and purchase true bewilderment. You don't get what you want ....you get what you are in christ.

I promise this has been the truth for me. In Jesus christ .

Think of what you really have to lose. ...your ego?

Break the Matrix of illusion that holds your senses captive.

once you do . you too will have the wisdom of God that comes only through the Holy Spirit. Saved By grace through Faith. Just like seeing a new colour.... can't explain it to a transient caught in the matrix of worldly deception.
You will also see how the world suppresses this information and distorts it

You're all smart people . I tell the truth. Its hard to think out of the box when earthly thinking is the box.
I'ts a personal free experience you can do it free anytime . Don't wait till you are about to die.. START PUTTING YOUR TREASURES WHERE THEY REALLY MATTER >
Its awsome and It's just between you and Jesus

I like to give every spammer one chance to respond to something, just to see if they're willing to interact like a real human, before I write them off

      @Kindness,

i know you will probably not respond for whatever personal reasons, but you cannot just solicit to people and expect them to convert. they must do the research and decision-making of their own free will otherwise they'd be converting into something that they don't fully believe in. personally my in laws and wife are LDS (mormon) and my father in law is a convert and none of them cares if i ever convert or not, but if i do they all want it to be because i want it, not because they wanted me to.

Another FAKE! God knows the difference between you fakes and people that LIVE the words in the Bible. DOING good deeds and trying to act like you're superior are two different things. Most so-called Christians have to call themselves Christians because no one else would recognize them as such from their hatred of everyone but themselves. It's a personality disorder!

Unfrotunately not clever enough to sing something that isn't foolish and bigotted... and doesn't even rhyme.

If by 'clever' you mean 'brainwashed' yes I agree...

You must be his ignorant, bigoted baby daddy.

That little kid had no idea as to the meaning of what he was saying and the adults who allowed him to speak those words should all be charged with child abuse. This child will grow up to be a hateful, bigoted bully causing great harm to others unless of course childrens services steps in and gets him away from those abusers.

Yeah! Kid just needs to shave his head, get a few tats and come up with a few lyrics about the Jews and blacks then he'll grow up to be a proper little skinhead.
