We don't teach hate, says church where anti-homosexual song filmed

By Ismael Estrada, CNN

Greensburg, Indiana (CNN) - About 20 protesters gathered on Sunday outside the Apostolic Truth Tabernacle here to voice opposition to a viral online video that was taped in the church and shows a young child singing song with lyrics that offer a harsh message for homosexuals.

The video, which surfaced on YouTube last week, shows a child in front of the congregation, singing "I know that God is right, and somebody's wrong... ain't no homo going to make it to heaven."

The congregation erupts in applause at those lines, which the unidentified boy repeats as the pastor looks on.

At another point in the video a voice is heard shouting,"That’s my boy."

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

In the first Sunday service since the video surfaced, congregants arrived to the church as protesters jeered them over the video.

A church leader, who would not give his name, told CNN that journalists were not allowed inside the church and declined to offer anyone from church leadership to comment on the video.

The leader said that he needed to be cautious about letting outsiders into the church because it had received threats over the video and asked CNN to leave the premises.

Church videos with harsh words for gays go viral online

The local sheriff's office said the church had not reported any verifiable threats.

No one answered the door at the home of Jeff Sangl, the church's pastor.

The video of the singing boy was the latest in a string of viral anti-gay videos that have surfaced from independent churches.  Those videos have been resoundingly condemned by religious leaders, even by conservatives who believe homosexual sex is a sin.

The Apostolic Truth Tabernacle posted a statement on its website that says in part: "The Pastor and members of Apostolic Truth Tabernacle do not condone, teach, or practice hate of any person for any reason.”

The pastor's son, Josh Sangl, told CNN his father was away on vacation and that there was much more to the video than we were being told, though he wouldn’t elaborate.

The majority of the church members wouldn’t comment about the controversy or respond to questions about the parents of the young boy.

"I think it's blown out of proportion, you know," said Robert Kirby, who is not a church member but was attending Sunday's church service in support of his daughter, who teaches Sunday School there. "They love everybody.

"They don't love sin though," he said. "It's all in the Bible."

Sad to see that atheists only attack and target Christians when there are millions of Jews, Muslims, Hindus, etc. being worse than most Christians. Go to the large diverse cities and see in your own eyes!

in this country it's the christians that are trying to force their religion down everyone's throats.

While they are pretty bad, it is Christianity that is trying to turn America in a theocracy. In fact, the only religion I sort of have respect for at all is Buddhism because they at least don't try and make you feel awful.

As someone who actually lives in a large city I really only see Christians hating the gays at pride parades – I think they ship the protesters in from trailerparks. If you want to see hate go out into rural bible belts. I doubt Sally has been in a large city recently. Unless Chatanooga counts.

Please don't randomly include other religions when you don't know anything about them. What do you know about Hinduism? For starters its not 'Dogmatic' like Christianity where any person showing any sign of intelligence is considered an anti-christian.
Hinduism never preaches, forces or abuses other people. Mediation and Yoga an essential part of Hinduism is practiced by everybody around the world and Hindus don't force people to convert to Hinduism to do yoga or every non-Hindu would have to go to Hindu temples to learn yoga. The bottom line is don't talk about Hinduism, it will take you a million years to get a grasp of a religion thousands of years old and which is still surviving with more books on it than your school of 1-12.
In my opinion if a religion has to survive it has to offer goodness and preach peace and love, it should never ridicule, abuse, convert and lie. It should accept and have a scope of flexibility and accept intelligent thinking.

Please don't try to forbid marriage amongst those our Lord God created gay...

      1 Timothy 4:1-5

Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart
from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings
of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are
seared, who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God
created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know
the truth. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be
rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the
      word of God and prayer.

      PastorJim – You quoted Leviticus as condemning h o m o s e x u a l i t y because the Scripture says, "Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind; it is an abomination." As a gay man, I do not have s e x with women, I have s e x with men. Thus, I do not lie with mankind as with womankind. This Scripture was not intended to condemn h o m o s e x u a l i t y.

By the way, Leviticus also forbids wearing clothes made of two fabrics and says we should stone children who disrespect their parents. You had better check your closet and supply of stones.

Christians even have an answer for this piece of filth.
Lott thinking that God had destroyed humanity, except for themselves,
figured that it was up to them to re-populate the earth.

If God destroyed the earth, why was Lott and his family left to live ?
If God was powerful enough to destroy earth, why would not God re-populate it,
after all he started it with Adam & Eve ?

Humankind after all comes from "incest".
Adam & Eve had 2 sons.
No daughters. Where did the children come from ?

What is important about comparative studies is that they place biblical words in their historical context. The word Sheol should thus be understood in terms of what it meant in the Hebrew language and by its parallel in the other languages of that time. Why?

When God wanted Israel to believe something which was unique and contrary to what the surrounding cultures believed, He always clearly condemned and forbade the pagan beliefs and then stressed the uniqueness of the new concept. For example, in order to establish monotheism, God repeatedly and clearly condemned the pagan concept of polytheism and stressed monotheism.

While God clearly condemned polytheism in the Old Testament, at no time did He ever condemn belief in a conscious afterlife. At no time did God ever put forth the concept of annihilation or nonexistence as the fate of man’s soul at death.

This is not new. Small churches like the ones we are hearing such hate from have always taught that it is ok to hate and condemn those who are not similar to themselves.

However, with the advent of video technology, we are now seeing into the lives of these intollerant people like we never were able to before. That is ok; the first step to curing your problem is to admit you have a problem, and America is making it very obvious that we have a major problem with intollerance in this country.

Unfortunately, the people who spread this hatred do not see it as wrong. Therefore, we still have quite a long ways to go before "We the people" is a motto we live by rather than just give token credence to.

"This is not new. Small churches like the ones we are hearing such hate from have always taught that it is ok to hate and condemn those who are not similar to themselves."

Not similar to ourselves? This isn't like skin color or a different hairstyle. We're talking about a sin. Even if it is not a sin to you, it is a sin to the people of that church, and it goes to the core of their faith.

      June 4, 2012 at 10:28 pm |
    • skarphace

Evangelical: it is only a sin if everyone believes as you do. This is not the case. There are many, many interpretations of the Bible, as the various books were written in ancient languages and then translated into English, and sometimes translated several times before into English. The members of these Churches preach hate towards all those who are different than themselves, either by race, creed, s e x uality, ethnicity, etc.

You may not want to admit this is true, but videos such as the one we are discussing make it very obvious that it is.
