We don't teach hate, says church where anti-homosexual song filmed

By Ismael Estrada, CNN

Greensburg, Indiana (CNN) - About 20 protesters gathered on Sunday outside the Apostolic Truth Tabernacle here to voice opposition to a viral online video that was taped in the church and shows a young child singing song with lyrics that offer a harsh message for homosexuals.

The video, which surfaced on YouTube last week, shows a child in front of the congregation, singing "I know that God is right, and somebody's wrong... ain't no homo going to make it to heaven."

The congregation erupts in applause at those lines, which the unidentified boy repeats as the pastor looks on.

At another point in the video a voice is heard shouting,"That’s my boy."

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

In the first Sunday service since the video surfaced, congregants arrived to the church as protesters jeered them over the video.

A church leader, who would not give his name, told CNN that journalists were not allowed inside the church and declined to offer anyone from church leadership to comment on the video.

The leader said that he needed to be cautious about letting outsiders into the church because it had received threats over the video and asked CNN to leave the premises.

Church videos with harsh words for gays go viral online

The local sheriff's office said the church had not reported any verifiable threats.

No one answered the door at the home of Jeff Sangl, the church's pastor.

The video of the singing boy was the latest in a string of viral anti-gay videos that have surfaced from independent churches.  Those videos have been resoundingly condemned by religious leaders, even by conservatives who believe homosexual sex is a sin.

The Apostolic Truth Tabernacle posted a statement on its website that says in part: "The Pastor and members of Apostolic Truth Tabernacle do not condone, teach, or practice hate of any person for any reason.”

The pastor's son, Josh Sangl, told CNN his father was away on vacation and that there was much more to the video than we were being told, though he wouldn’t elaborate.

The majority of the church members wouldn’t comment about the controversy or respond to questions about the parents of the young boy.

"I think it's blown out of proportion, you know," said Robert Kirby, who is not a church member but was attending Sunday's church service in support of his daughter, who teaches Sunday School there. "They love everybody.

"They don't love sin though," he said. "It's all in the Bible."

They keep saying that EXACT same thing. WHY won't anyone listen to them? HELLO, It's NOT hate if we say it or act it out; it's the heathens who are the only ones even capable of such things! SURE. Not havin' it, not buying that crap. It's eternally disgusting.

Ok,read that bible of yours, Jesus taught love, care, share, care for those who are different than you, he loved those who were different than him, he hung out w/ sinners, cared for them and prayed with them. He went to all kinds of people and all kinds of places to show love and care. To hate is unChrist like. Read what Jesus did, and plz act more like him if you profess to be "Christians", he is a loving Lord God, no hate, - judgement is left up to his heavenly Father, not us, show love and compassion and be "Christlike". Message for all Christians," it's all so simple " , Jesus' teachings, love on another!!!

Solomon had 700 wives! Anybody ever figure out where Adam and Eve's grandchildren came from? Maybe they just pick out the parts of the Bible that suits their needs to hate. I don't understand which preachings of Jesus taught hate and judgement.

    June 4, 2012 at 10:50 pm |
    • Cletus

Jesus did some serious hatin' on thet olive tree, pharisees, and a whole lotta other folk. Made threats agin'em and never came back after gettin' hisself caught by the priests he was hatin' on. Not a real sharp stick but then he thought he was god, too.

i love it. this kind of hate is a commercial for atheism/humanism.

Humanism, an atheistic philosophy offers a much more ethical way to live than that offered by the bible/christianity. i challenge any christian to show differently.

They can say that that they don't condone "hate". That's because they will define "hate" in their own terms – not in the terms of society. All cults do that. They define their own words in order to emphasize the "in-group" and delineate the "out-group". Definitions are the first casualty of any Fundamentalist religion (Christian, Muslim, or Jewish) and cult.

    June 4, 2012 at 10:45 pm |
    • Bootyfunk

every single religion on earth is a cult. when a cult is accepted by society, it's called a religion. when there are no more cult members to worship said religion, it becomes a mythology.

christianity went from step 1 to step 2, only one step left...

I don't care what the church says now....when that kid was applauded and praised with the, "that's my boy" line, and no one stepped up and condemned it right there on the spot, the church was agreeable to what was being said. No doubt about it.

I think CNN doesn't like me. I think CNN thinks I'm foul. I think CNN thinks I'm profane. I think CNN thinks I put discourteous comments in the comment section like "Put that pénis in your hairy á´s´shóle" (from 'Tinas'). CNN? I don't write things like this. I don't express things like this. I'm too old and civil to write things like this. But when I write things like "Horse Puckey" it doesn't get posted. Geez. Go figure. Maybe I should say "Horse Doo-Doo" or "Horse Feces" or "Horse Dung" or "Horse Excrement". I certainly wouldn't say "Horse ****". That would be prohibited. But, when I post a comment that basically disagrees with a church that says that they don't teach hate, I get booted. I've read almost all of the comments on this article and I've come to the conclusion that quite a number of those who have posted should only be let out on the weekends to play with the dull Crayolas.

It may be something different which is getting your post filtered. Try to write the word "Consti tution" for example. Because is has the word "ti t" embedded in it, then your post will be banned.

  17. skarphace

Videos such as this one make me very happy that our founding fathers had the forsight not to make this a Theocracy and make our Consti tution based on a religious text.

It seems the only ideals being pushed by religious people lately is hatred and intollerance. Jesus would be proud.

the church is very selective in what biblical rules/laws they follow.

      bible says:
kill all g.ays (10% of the country)
kill all non-virgin brides (98% of women in this country)
kill everyone that works the weekend (50% of the country)
kill disobedient children (50% of kids?)

how many does that leave alive?
