Police arrest Georgia megachurch pastor after disturbance at home

By John Murgatroyd and John Blake, CNN

Atlanta (CNN)– Megachurch pastor Creflo Dollar was arrested in suburban Atlanta for an alleged assault on his 15-year-old daughter, police said Friday.

Deputies in Georgia's Fayette County responded to a call about a domestic disturbance about 1 a.m. Friday. Dollar's daughter said she argued with her father over attending a party, said Investigator Brent Rowan of the Fayette County Sheriff's Office.

The daughter says the argument got physical.

She told the deputies that her father charged her, put his hands around her throat and began to choke her, according to a police report. She said he then slammed her to the ground, punched her and beat her with his shoe.

Dollar's daughter was able to get away and dial 911, Rowan said.

Deputies noticed a scratch on the daughter's neck and arrested Dollar on charges of simple battery, family violence and child cruelty.

Deputies also spoke with another daughter, 19, who corroborated her sister's account of what happened.

Dollar was booked into the Fayette County jail early Friday. A judge set his bail at $5,000 during a morning hearing, and he was released.

Dollar said in a statement released to the media from his attorney, "As a father I love my children and I always have their best interest at heart at all times, and I would never use my hand to ever cause bodily harm to my children. The facts in this case will be handled privately to further protect my children. My family thanks you for your prayers and continued support."

Dollar is a senior pastor of World Changers Church International in suburban Atlanta, which claims about 30,000 members and has an $18 million sanctuary that resembles a golden-domed spaceship atop a hill.

He built an international religious empire, with broadcasts of his sermons beamed worldwide and speaking engagements in Europe.

A barrel-chested man who favors impeccably tailored pinstripe suits in the pulpit, Dollar preaches the Prosperity Gospel, a message that says God will bless faithful Christians with wealth and debt-free living.

Since he started his ministry in an elementary school cafeteria in 1986, Dollar has earned both praise and criticism.

Supporters say he has preached a message that's financially empowered his parishioners and challenged the idea that Christians should be ashamed to be rich.

Critics call him "Cash-Flow Dollar," a pulpit prima donna who once refused to allow parishioners to touch him. They say his message perverts the Gospel.

Dollar has had brushes with the law before, according to a lengthy 2000 profile in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

He was once cited for contempt of court for refusing to give a deposition during the divorce proceedings of boxer Evander Holyfield, who attended his church, according to the AJC.

The AJC profile also said that 100 police officers were admonished for receiving $1,000 apiece from Dollar. Dollar sent the money to honor the officers' community service, but the act was criticized because it came a month after two traffic tickets Dollar received were downgraded to warnings, the profile said.

Pastors spend so much time with ministry that their "First Ministry" goes with-out them. The church pulls soooo much on their leadership that the children are often fending for themselves. Why do you thing the leaders of churches have the most problems with their own home? The leaders think that the children should get it. It's up to us as leaders to balance ministry and home. Your home is your first ministry! The government says not to discipline your children but yet the children are the ones that needs the discipline! Let the parents raise their children! Leaders: Build your homes and the ministry will be built!

The "heat of the moments" are riddles of life gathered and strewn and given to strife. Love hurts in times of worry brings about gestations to scurry. Creflo Dollar is only a man of human decent and not the all knowing does commit a hellbent. Love loses out upon a teen's will and judgemental prudence becomes the wicked wayfaring pill. Love hurts in both ways thru worrying days, the fathers disdain over child's plays. Forgive the father and daughter they both are found wrong and bitter their weights are not song!

What the hell is a 15 year old girl doing out of bed at that time of the morning and arguing about going to a party? There are times the law needs to butt out of parental issues. These are the same cops who have no problem shooting a child but arrest parents for disciplining their kids.SAD.Parents en masse should hand ALL unruly kids over to the cops and make them feed, school, clothe and discipline these ungrateful POS.These are the same ones who go abroad and try the same crap and when they are busted and punished they wonder, what did I do wrong!!These kids are totally out of control and need to be reined in.One cannot have the tail wagging the dog.

So you are saying the law should not be concerned when someone chokes another person, beats them with a shoe, and throws them on the ground?

Amen. Recall Obama's speech 4 years ago about the importance of fathers in the lives of their childen. At least Creflo Dollars is not an absentee father – he was at home and not happy with a 15 year old girl out partying til 1AM in the morning.

At least his daughters know that he is there and that he cares. He needs to reconsider how useful it is to lose his temper with disobedient disrespectful daughters. His violent conduct is counter-productive in the extreme. Hopefully he and his daughters can show more respect for each other in future. I am quite sure that he will. I am afraid however that judicial intervention here may just embolden the daughter to more disrespectful, wreckless and dangerous activities and exacerbate the problems in raising these young girls in Atlanta.

"At least Creflo Dollars is not an absentee father"

A violent father is actually worse than an absentee father for young women. Every study ever done has shown a direct connection between abusive fathers and their children being more accepting of abuse.

"At least his daughters know that he is there and that he cares"

No, his daughter is now scared of him. He did not show her he cared, he showed her that violent behavior toward her is acceptable by male authority figures.

"He needs to reconsider how useful it is to lose his temper with disobedient disrespectful daughters. His violent conduct is counter-productive in the extreme"

Yes he does. Violent behavior does not ever build trust or respect. All it builds is resentment and fear. It is also the worst thing you can do to a young woman as it sets them up for a lifetime of abuse. This pastor has just shown his daughter that violent male behavior is part of their family dynamic. How will she react when her husband chokes her, or beats her with a shoe?

To strike a child who is being disobedient is fine, it is a small sting as a reminder of their wrong choices...choking was Dollars mistake, I will pray for this man...He is a good man.

As a Christian, and a citizen of the State of Georgia I find people like this man, utterly disgusting. He is a disgrace to civilized society.

This shouldn't be about religion or lack there-of, especially considering atheists are more likely to help others out of kindness than christians who usually do it more out of a feeling of obligation IF they do, but about how horrible this man is as a Human Being.

You do realize that when you beat your female children, that they are 5 times more likely to stay in an abusive relationship. When you beat them (make no mistake this jerk beat his daughter) you set them up for a lifetime of accepting being abused.

Mt. 19:20ff. The young man said to Him, "All these commands I have kept; what am I still lacking?" Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."

A 15 year old girl should be allowed to be out partying or hanging out or hooking up til 1 AM and later, and a father should never try to hinder his daughter's right to party!

Responsible fathers should just shut up and stay at home by the phone, waiting for the call to pick up his 15 year old, at the party or all the mall or at the police station or at the hospital or at the morgue. Being a good father means don't try to supervise or care for your daughter – just shut up and give her mad money or party money or booze money or drug money!

I think you missed the part about the "beating her up" that people are upset about......

      June 8, 2012 at 2:15 pm |

Failure to communicate makes a good point, that I certainly did not miss, that what Dreflow Dollar did was wrongful, sinful, criminal. Nobody defends that and I certainly would not excuse such assault. I am sure that the Minister regrets his stupid violent and counter-productive treatment of his 15 year old daughter.

This confrontation raises other issues about black fathers who do not care for children or who do not take responsibility for their children. I recall Obama made a big address touching this issue. I would simply say that Creflo Dollars is not one of those absent fathers who neglect their kids. Creflo's actions were intemprate and destructive, but at least his daughters know that they are important to him, that they matter and that he will jeopardize his own well-being, safety and security to do what he thinks is best for them ... and that he is human, and that he makes mistakes ... but make no mistake, they are the most important thing in the world to him. I am confident that Creflo has learned from his mistakes ... and that he will let their mother discipline the daughters in future.

A parent CAN prevent a child from doing what she wants, BUT if he has not established authority enough to be able to do so by a firm "no" and a shut door, if he has to go as far as chokeholding and beating up with a shoe, he's failing.

    June 8, 2012 at 2:12 pm |
  17. Luz

How dare these kids do this to their father. He is the head of the household and she probably completely disrespected and challenged his authority in HIS home. They can live on their own if they do not like the rules. Now he has to deal with public scrutiny because of his daughter's behavior. HE IS NOT A CRIMINAL, he is FATHER. I will pray for him and his family. This too shall pass...

"How dare these kids do this to their father." Do what? Push boundaries like kids will do? That's perfectly natural. What isn't natural is for a "father" to strike out like a child.

This is too much. Why can't a man discipline his kids, that's why we have many youngsters in Jail or dropping out of school or being teenage Mums, the same law punishing this man will not hesitate to put a 15 year old black boy in adult prison. He is a true father

I am kind of confused here, Can't a man discipline his kids again? When is enough enough? We have too many teenage pregnancies in our communities, Our your kids are going to prison at an early age, Why can't a man discipline his child without Big Government intruding. The judges don't always have a problem with sending a 15 year old African American to an Adult prison

For the same reason that I can't beat the sh it out of you without big government intruding.

Because assaulting a minor is illegal.

sorry jubril but if he did this to his wife it would be abuse and assault. It doesnt change just because the victim is his daughter.

The sooner the cancer of "Religion"is eradicated the sooner mankind will be able to progress beyond the level of kindergarden. Black people have to read up more today as to how to raise a child. There are many children out there who are studios, industrious, and are going to get somewere in Life...Try to find out how to do this. You are the childs teacher. This goes for all parents out there..Bt blacks have to make an extra effort. Keep them in school. help them with their homework. Teach them Values.....Bill the Greek from Las Vegas...You will be there when your child graduates....

I can tell your not educated. Why ifs it that Black Americans are advancing in America at a faster pace than whites and you all had a head start and were never oppressed. Good luck with your ignorance though

      Huh?

There are more young black men in jail than in college. Blacks lead the nation in unwed pregnancies, crime, incarceration, and welfare as percent of population. They have the lowest standardized test score of all English speaking US races.

I'm not saying white people are categorically better, but the black community in American has gone significantly backwards from when I was a child. To assert that blacks by and large are moving faster forward than whites simply does not match the statistics.
