Creflo Dollar's Prosperity Gospel finds followers and critics

By Melissa Gray, CNN

Atlanta (CNN) - The arrest of Georgia megachurch pastor Creflo Dollar brought renewed attention to his message of the Prosperity Gospel, controversial to some and faith-fulfilling to its followers.

Dollar, who was arrested last week after allegedly assaulting his teenage daughter, is the founder and pastor of World Changers Church International in suburban Atlanta.

It claims about 30,000 members and has a multimillion-dollar sanctuary that resembles a golden-domed spaceship atop a hill.

Dollar said in a statement he would never harm his children and that the facts in the case would be handled privately.

Prosperity ministers preach that God rewards the faithful with wealth and spiritual gifts. Pastors such as T.D. Jakes, Dollar, and Joel Osteen have become the Prosperity Gospel's most well known preachers, building megachurches and business empires with a message equating piety with prosperity.

CNN's Belief Blog: the faith angles behind the big stories

While popular in the black church, it is not a solely black phenomenon, as seen in the ministry of Osteen, a best-selling author and megapastor at Lakewood Church in Houston. The church website says it is considered to be the largest church in America, with more than 38,000 attendees.

The Prosperity Gospel is a form of evangelical Christianity that largely grew out of the booming economy of postwar America, says Jonathan Walton, a professor of Christian Morals at Harvard and author of "Watch This! Televangelism and African American Religious Culture."

The theology's emphasis is on God's promised generosity in this life and the ability of believers to claim it for themselves. If God loves us, it teaches, then God will reward us with a new home, a good job, or good health, Walton says. God wants us to be prosperous.

Megachurch pastor Creflo Dollar on his daughter: 'She was not punched'

One of the problems that conservatives tend to have with prosperity theology is its focus on material prosperity, says Ben Phillips, a theology professor at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Houston.

"The Prosperity Gospel tends to mask the greatest need that any individual has, and that's to be reconciled to God through faith in Christ," Phillips says.

"The point is that God is the ultimate good," he continues. "Knowing Him, being in a relationship with Him ... in which He is God and we are His creatures, that is where joy is found."

Believers may argue, however, that material wealth is evidence of being in covenant with God, says Michael Long, a teacher of religious studies at Elizabethtown College and editor of the book, "I Must Resist: Bayard Rustin's Life in Letters."

Those believers might say material goods are a side effect of believing in God and Christ, he says. "The focus is on getting right with God, but you know that when you get right with God, you're going to get something for it."

While the theology may attract more followers in a time of economic boom, the fact that it focuses so much on the individual and controlling one's own heart is a comfort in tough economic times as well, Long says.

Tom Brown, senior pastor of the Word of Life Church in El Paso, Texas, says wealth and prosperity are what God desires for us.

"Just as any parent enjoys watching their kids have fun, God delights in watching His children enjoy what money can buy," Brown writes on the website for his ministry. "I believe God is love and He desires the best life we can have."

Believers must then use their wealth to help others, Brown says - and that to have money for its own sake is pointless.

Phillips says it's true that the Bible teaches Christians to care for the poor, sick and needy, "but the Bible also teaches that God uses and permits suffering in the lives of people for His own ends and purposes."

He points to the Book of James, which says we must value the trials in our life because they shape our character.

"Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. But the rich should take pride in their humiliation - since they will pass away like a wild flower," it says in James 1:9-10.

Critics may say prosperity followers are wrong, but believers say they are sincere, Walton says. The pastors may be pop culture celebrities, but it doesn't mean their congregations don't find fulfillment in the message.

The pastors' wealth, derided by some as evidence of hypocrisy, could also simply be seen as evidence of their faith, Walton says.

"The wealth is part of their authority," he says.

    A preacher who lies on his own daughter to protect his income is not a preacher. I hope his guilt leads him to tell the truth. This would all be over if he just said things got out of hand and apologized. The world would have moved on. Now there is the 911 tape..

    Religion is not a ploy to lure simpletons away from reason, as one eluded to. Life is hard, and without God I don't know if I would have the strength to get out of bed in the morning. Struggling financially is humiliating, not born of power. Pleading God to show up and be God, provider, defender of the poor, widows, orphans.....that is my prayer. My biggest disappointment is that God chooses to do His work through each of us. I understand the whole "individual will" thing and yet it appears in my mind to limit God to use each of us to reach out to those in need, and yet without us being in the mix we would never know empathy. Money does two things: it enriches and it distorts. Most who elevate themselves from finanacial pits remove themselves from the pain and suffering of those with less because seeing it can cause fear that at any time our lives too may turn on a dime and find ourselves at the bottom rung of society.

    Hello, I am a conservative Christian and I want you to know that the earth is billions of years old and that modern man is 8 thousand years old and if you ever studied the bible for yourself rather than reguritating some nonsense some theologian spewed you would know that science and the bible dovetail beautifully, but then you would have to admit there is a God and you would be forced to look at the big picture and your eternal destiny. By 1 man sin came into the world, By the Righteousness of 1 man all men were made free. Jesus dieing on the cross allowed for all men to be given the Holy Spirit to help us not serve sin. Read my scripture I posted, it's faithful and true. When I gave my life to Christ, I started becoming more and more like him. I stopped drinking, cursing, and doing all things that I use to do to serve sin.

      As you are so quick to prove, religions are pathetic jokes that prey on the stupid and ignorant among us. Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree... yeah, makes perfect sense. Unfortunately, Islam is just as stupid. How many times do Christian and Muslim 'leaders' need to be found guilty of ripping people off, molesting children, and/or encouraging ignorance and aggression for the stupid sheep that follow them to smarten up? Religions have always been for censorship so let's ban them and do the world a big favour.

    MY personal testimony.
    A thought to consider without an ego response

    Accept Jesus christ as your lord and saviour. You never know how soon is too late. Transcend the worldly illusion of enslavement.
    The world denounces truth....

    Accepting Jesus Christ (for me) resulted in something like seeng a new colour. You will see it .....but will not be able to clearly explain it to anyone else..... Its meant to be that way to transend any selfism within you.

    Also... much the world arranges "surrounding dark matter into something to be debated" in such a way that protects/inflates the ego.

    The key is be present and transcend our own desire to physically see evidence. We don't know anyways by defending our own perception of dark matter.

    Currently.... most of us are constructing our own path that suits our sin lifestyle. Were all sinners. Knowing that we are is often an issue. But both christians and non are sinners.

    We don't like to Let go and let god. We want control to some degree. This is what Jesus asks us to do. "Follow me".
    It's the hardest thing to do... but is done by letting the truth of scripture lead you (redemptive revelation)... as I said .

    Try reading corinthians and see if it makes sense to you. Try it without a pre conceived notion of it being a fairy tale.
    See the truth...
    do we do what it says in todays society... is it relevant... so many have not recently read and only hinge their philosophy on what they have heard from som other person...which may have been full of arogance pride or vanity..

    Look closely at the economy ponzi, look at how society idolizes Lust , greed , envy, sloth, pride of life, desire for knowledge, desire for power, desire for revencge,gluttony with food etc .

    Trancsend the temporal world.

    Just think if you can find any truth you can take with you ....in any of these things. When you die your riches go to someone who will spend away your life..... You will be forgotten.... history will repeat iteslf.... the greatest minds knowledge fade or are eventually plagerzed..... your good deeds will be forgotten and only give you a fleeting temporary reward . your learned teachings are forgotten or mutated..... your gold is transfered back to the rullers that rule you through deception. Your grave will grow over . This is truth .

    Trancsend your egoism and free yourself from this dominion of satan. Understand you are a sinner and part of the collective problem of this worldly matrix... Repent.... Repent means knowing (to change) The Holy spirit (within) will convict you beyond what you think you can do by yourself. Grace is given to those who renounce the world. That are" in" the world but not "of " the world.

    Evidence follows faith. Faith does not follow evidence..... Faith above reason in Jesus Christ.

    Faith comes by Reading or Hearing the word of god from the bible . Ask Jesus in faith for dicernment and start reading the new testament... You will be shocked when you lay down your preconceived notions and ....see and hear truth ... see how christ sets an example ... feel the truth....

    Read Ecclesiastes. Read corinthians.

    You cant trancend your own egoism by adapting a world philosophy to suit your needs. Seek the truth in Christ.

    Sell all your cleverness and purchase true bewilderment. You don't get what you want ....you get what you are in christ.

    I promise this has been the truth for me. In Jesus christ .

    Think of what you really have to lose. ...your ego?

    Break the Matrix of illusion that holds your senses captive.

    once you do . you too will have the wisdom of God that comes only through the Holy Spirit. Saved By grace through Faith. Just like seeing a new colour.... can't explain it to a transient caught in the matrix of worldly deception.
    You will also see how the world suppresses this information and distorts it

    You're all smart people . I tell the truth. Its hard to think out of the box when earthly thinking is the box.
    I'ts a personal free experience you can do it free anytime . Don't wait till you are about to die.. START PUTTING YOUR TREASURES WHERE THEY REALLY MATTER >
    Its awsome and It's just between you and Jesus

    my testimony

    Romans 10:9

    "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."

    • god gave us REASON

      Here is a quick survey for you. Please, any Christian, honestly answer the following:
      The completely absurd theory that all 7,000,000,000 human beings are simultaneously being supervised 24 hours a day, every day of their lives by an immortal, invisible being for the purposes of reward or punishment in the “afterlife” comes from the field of:
      (a) Astronomy;
      (b) Medicine;
      (c) Economics; or
      (d) Christianity
      You are about 70% likely to believe the entire Universe began less than 10,000 years ago with only one man, one woman and a talking snake if you are a:
      (a) historian;
      (b) geologist;
      (c) NASA astronomer; or
      (d) Christian
      I have convinced myself that gay $ex is a choice and not genetic, but then have no explanation as to why only gay people have ho.mo$exual urges. I am
      (a) A gifted psychologist
      (b) A well respected geneticist
      (c) A highly educated sociologist
      (d) A Christian with the remarkable ability to ignore inconvenient facts.
      I honestly believe that, when I think silent thoughts like, “please god, help me pass my exam tomorrow,” some invisible being is reading my mind and will intervene and alter what would otherwise be the course of history in small ways to help me. I am
      (a) a delusional schizophrenic;
      (b) a naïve child, too young to know that that is silly
      (c) an ignorant farmer from Sudan who never had the benefit of even a fifth grade education; or
      (d) your average Christian
      Millions and millions of Catholics believe that bread and wine turns into the actual flesh and blood of a dead Jew from 2,000 years ago because:
      (a) there are obvious visible changes in the condiments after the Catholic priest does his hocus pocus;
      (b) tests have confirmed a divine presence in the bread and wine;
      (c) now and then their god shows up and confirms this story; or
      (d) their religious convictions tell them to blindly accept this completely fvcking absurd nonsense.
      I believe that an all powerful being, capable of creating the entire cosmos watches me have $ex to make sure I don't do anything "naughty". I am
      (a) A victim of child molestation
      (b) A r.ape victim trying to recover
      (c) A mental patient with paranoid delusions
      (d) A Christian
      The only discipline known to often cause people to kill others they have never met and/or to commit suicide in its furtherance is:
      (a) Architecture;
      (b) Philosophy;
      (c) Archeology; or
      (d) Religion
      What is it that most differentiates science and all other intellectual disciplines from religion:
      (a) Religion tells people not only what they should believe, but what they are morally obliged to believe on pain of divine retribution, whereas science, economics, medicine etc. has no “sacred cows” in terms of doctrine and go where the evidence leads them;
      (b) Religion can make a statement, such as “there is a composite god comprised of God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit”, and be totally immune from experimentation and challenge, whereas science can only make factual assertions when supported by considerable evidence;
      (c) Science and the scientific method is universal and consistent all over the World whereas religion is regional and a person’s religious conviction, no matter how deeply held, is clearly nothing more than an accident of birth; or
      (d) All of the above.
      If I am found wandering the streets flagellating myself, wading into a filth river, mutilating my child’s genitals or kneeling down in a church believing that a being is somehow reading my inner thoughts and prayers, I am likely driven by:
      (a) a deep psychiatric issue;
      (b) an irrational fear or phobia;
      (c) a severe mental degeneration caused by years of drug abuse; or
      (d) my religious belief.
      Who am I? I don’t pay any taxes. I never have. Any money my organization earns is tax free and my own salary is also tax free, at the federal, state and local level. Despite contributing nothing to society, but still enjoying all its benefits, I feel I have the right to tell others what to do. I am
      (a) A sleazy Wall Street banker
      (b) A mafia boss
      (c) A drug pusher; or
      (d) A Catholic Priest, Protestant Minister or Jewish Rabbi.
      What do the following authors all have in common – Jean Paul Sartre, Voltaire, Denis Diderot, Victor Hugo, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Immanuel Kant, David Hume, René Descartes, Francis Bacon, John Milton, John Locke, and Blaise Pascal:
      (a) They are among the most gifted writers the World has known;
      (b) They concentrated on opposing dogma and opening the human mind and spirit to the wonders of free thought and intellectual freedom;
      (c) They were intimidated by the Catholic Church and put on the Church’s list of prohibited authors; or
      (d) All of the above.
      The AIDS epidemic will kill tens of millions in poor African and South American countries before we defeat it. Condoms are an effective way to curtail its spread. As the Pope still has significant influence over the less educated masses in these parts of the World, he has exercised this power by:
      (a) Using some of the Vatican’s incomprehensible wealth to educate these vulnerable people on health family planning and condom use;
      (b) Supporting government programs that distribute condoms to high risk groups;
      (c) Using its myriad of churches in these regions to distribute condoms; or
      (d) Scaring people into NOT using condoms, based upon his disdainful and aloof view that it is better that a person die than go against the Vatican’s position on contraceptive use.

    Yeah Tom lets just destroy the families take their money take their kids tie them up in court put in court appointed child welfare personal who cant keep a straight life themselves and we know the government has a great track record at running programs. Fathers without proved charges have been put in jail for 6 months and then the charges dropped. How do you pick up the pieces from that?

    June 12, 2012 at 10:52 am |
  14. Bob

    The laws in this country on child abuse have gotten ridiculous, I am not saying he is innocent or guilty but the police procedure is exactly as he describes it. If the police are called on a child abuse case at a house first they calm the situation next arrest the person that supposedly did the abusing if there is any mark it could be a small dot.The family will have to pay court costs endure child services and maybe even split up. This is all comes with the loss of pay and court costs maybe even the loss of a job. Many cases they actually surround the house as if you were public enemy number one. There may be no real problem either even the police are also haveing a ethics problem with this. W

      You’re right. We should go back to the old system of ignoring abuse. Let’s leave those kids in a house with their abusers and hope he/she doesn’t go too far and kill the child. But if they do.. o well must be part of god’s plan…right?

      As much as I dislike Dollar, this 15 yr old girl tried to sneak out of the window at 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning to go to a party. When I got caught, my mother took off her shoe to swack my backside. She saw that it was her soft house shoe; this further Po'd her. She told me to stay put ( I thought about running; but I stayed put , you got to know my mother). She came back with big brown leather belt with the letter's JW on it (that was 40 yrs ago and i still remember the letters). The letters stood for my father's name or Jesus Wept.) The party I was sneaking out for got busted by the cops; for drugs, lewd behavior (for which I certainly would have participated), at least 12 kids got popped. Thank God that mean old ... I'd better not go any further; my mother blogs CNN.
