Megachurch pastor Creflo Dollar on his daughter: 'She was not punched'

By Steve Almasy, CNN

Atlanta (CNN) - Telling thousands of parishioners that he should never have been arrested, Pastor Creflo Dollar said at his Sunday morning service he neither choked nor punched his 15-year-old daughter, as she claimed in a report to police.

Dollar, senior pastor of World Changers Church International in suburban Atlanta, told congregants in the sprawling megachurch and listening at one of more than a dozen satellite churches that when the facts of the case come out, they will be "appalled."

"The truth is, she was not choked. She was not punched," Dollar said.

On Friday, deputies responding to a 911 call photographed a scratch on the daughter's neck and arrested Dollar on charges of simple battery, family violence and child cruelty. Dollar said the mark on his daughter's neck is more than 10 years old, the result of eczema, a skin condition.

"I want the church family to know that all is well in the Dollar household," he said, in his first public comments since spending more than 12 hours in jail. He immediately addressed the issue upon taking the pulpit Sunday, speaking for nearly eight minutes about the challenge of raising children and denying he had hurt to his daughter.

After Dollar told the crowd about the skin abrasion, one man yelled, "Case dismissed!"

Dollar's daughter said she argued with her father over attending a party, investigator Brent Rowan of the Fayette County Sheriff's Office told CNN on Friday.

Rowan said the daughter told the deputies that her father charged her, put his hands around her throat and began to choke her, according to a police report. She said he then slammed her to the ground, punched her and beat her with his shoe.

Deputies also spoke with another daughter, 19, who corroborated her sister's account of what happened.

Dollar blamed the devil for causing the controversy, saying that to discredit his message of "prosperity gospel," the enemy must discredit the messenger.

Prosperity ministers preach that God rewards the faithful with wealth and spiritual gifts. Pastors such as T.D. Jakes, Dollar and Joel Osteen have become the Prosperity Gospel's most well known preachers, building megachurches and business empires with a message equating piety with prosperity.

Dollar's church claims about 30,000 members and has an $18 million, 8,500-seat sanctuary about 15 miles from downtown Atlanta.

Friday's incident was emotionally charged and escalated from an argument, Dollar said Sunday. But he never intended bodily harm to anyone, he assured the audience.

"I love her with all my heart," he said, shaking his head with conviction.

Creflo Dollar's Prosperity Gospel finds followers and critics

He cited a Bible verse from Psalms that talks about malicious witness against the good man, and evil men delighting when he stumbled.

He later, during his sermon, also joked about the arrest, saying that being a religious man sent to jail "upped my resume."

"Paul ... Jesus ... and Creflo," he said to a huge cheer.

The pastor, known for his pinstriped suits, laughed at being clothed in a yellow jumpsuit and sandals while being handcuffed and being held in a cell.

For most of the service, Dollar spoke of the people being "the righteousness of God by faith," the third in a series of sermons he prepared weeks ago, he said.

"No weapon that forms against you shall prosper," he reminded the audience, citing scripture.

At the end of the more than hourlong appearance, he said that he was persevering thanks to God's love.

"And we couldn't do it without the love of you brothers and sisters."

After the service, congregants declined to comment on Dollar's appearance.

Since he started his ministry in an elementary school cafeteria in 1986, Dollar has earned praise and criticism.

Supporters say he has preached a message that's financially empowered his parishioners and challenged the idea that Christians should be ashamed to be rich.

Critics call him "Cash-Flow Dollar," and say his message perverts the Gospel.

CNN's John Murgatroyd and John Blake contributed to this report.

Unquestionably believe that that you stated. Your favourite justification seemed to be at the net the simplest thing to consider of. I say to you, I certainly get irked even as other folks consider worries that they just don't know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the highest and defined out the entire thing with no need side-effects , other people could take a signal. Will probably be again to get more. Thanks

Isn't it interesting how beating your children is supposed to be the way to make them grow up right, and yet its those VERY same children that arethe worst criminal offenders, i.e. African American children. We got all the answers on how to raise children, and yet our kids are the ones all over the daily news doing God only knows. You would think since "masa" beat the hell out of the slaves, us beating each other would be the LAST thing we would ever want to do.

This mentality of "do what i say and agree with me or else i get violent" is precisely why we'll never come up. Too damn IGNORANT! He is a full grown man BEATING A GIRL; HIS CHILD for God's sake! It is NOT ok! What if she would have picked up a knife to defend herself? What if he would have accidentally hit her temple against a hard surface by pushing her down? THINK! He was dead wrong for this and he stood in front of that church and LIED. My pastor comes from under him, so I've always been partial to him, but I have no respect for punk parents who are too unintelligent to find a way to discipline their children without beating on them, and bold face liars. So DONE.

I would have had more respect for him if he would have admitted it, apologized, and made it known that this is NOT the way you even treat a dog if it disobeys. I feel so sorry for that girl; she's the victim yet she has to walk around that church and have people stare at her and say she had it coming. He sacrificed his daughters credibility to save his own. Yeah, that's love.

I sincerely hope she presses charges and the D.A. signs off on it. A message needs to be sent; this type of behavior WILL NOT be tolerated, no matter who you are.

Oh, and this whole " its hard raising teenagers" and this so called " age of disrespect"....... in the words of Dr. Evil, BOO-FRICKITY-WHOO!!! Its called LIFE! Surely you knew children were a handful when you got knocked up, or knocked somebody up. Im tired of this lame excuse. These kids today are feeding off of what YOUR generation, yeah Im talking about you, started in the sixties and seventies so look in the mirror. Perhaps more children would show more respect if they actually got some, i.e. not being beat to death for disagreeing with a parent or showing emotion. It works both ways.

    • Just Me

I agree chantey and I am happy to see someone else out there sees it this way. I do not hit my kids and they are very well behaved. And like you said, I treat them like humans, respectfully, forgiving and patient as much as I can. I'm not perfect but my kids will not grow up thinking it's ok to hit someone because they did something you didn't like.

You people who beat your kids are uneducated trash. Oh and the next time you disagree or argue with someone, I hope they jump on you and beat the cr*p out of you...I mean..that IS how you think disagreements should be handled, right?

He totally did it. Because we all know now that no one is exempt. None of these people are superhumans. Sports "heroes," vatican priests, school teachers, everybody, it's in the news- they're being caught doing stuff.

I would frankly be more surprised if he DIDN't do it, the way he's acting like there's no way something like this could happen to him. She probably wanted to go to a very innapropriate party and he was probably pretty serious about protecting his image and her not going to it and I bet she sassed him until he showed her who was still the boss.

With this being the age of technology and there no longer being anywhere to hide 2 things are going to have to happen:
    1. There needs to be a national educational campaign for adults/parents on how to raise and treat children
    2. There needs to be better system in place to protect children.

Maybe she told her dad she was going to do bath salts or something and he was all – no you're not.
I think it would be easier for him, (Creflo), if he admitted he was human. I think we all already understand.
This coming from a 35 year old woman who grew up in a family where her mom watched Channel 58 all day instead of doing housework and idolized the people on Channel 58......... For the sake of how annoying that was, I think Creflo should admit he did it and acknowledge he is human and vulnerable.

  9. Somebody Cares

Jesus is our friend. Why can a parent not be a friend that guides and helps us have self control? We can beat kids with a rod of iron and probably have behaved kids on the outside, but what about the inside. God cares about our hearts and motives, as in LOVE. Do we want to raise children that seek safety in a friend in Jesus or do we want to raise kids that think they can obey their way into heaven? The cross bought our salvation since no one could obey the law enough. Beating kids into submission is legalism. Truth is important and Grace is important. Parents that get no respect when a child is 15 yrs. old, did not show that child respect. Respect in relationships is earned. FEAR is a tool of the enemy. Jesus says to fear not. Do we really want to use the enemy's tool of fear? It might make good behavior while we are looking, but it does not nor cannot achieve a heart connection of trust in Jesus, in child or adult. To deciple means to teach about Jesus and self control and forgiveness, grace. Can children not have grace too? Jesus said to let the children come to him. The kingdom of God is children.

Good dad, good dad, we are praying for you. You probably saved her life and one day she will be thankful. Glad it was not me that had to stop her from going out. I was very strict. And I believe in training them up the way they should go. I had this problem with my daughter who is now 44 has a double master degree in journalism and she made it through my strictness. The Bible said you can save their soul from hell. Praise God pastor Dollar

  13. Reality

The "rev" Dollar's actions would simply be a police report if were not for his flawed preaching about Christianity as noted in the prayer below:

The Apostles' Creed 2012: (updated by yours truly and based on the studies of historians and theologians of the past 200 years)

Should I believe in a god whose existence cannot be proven
and said god if he/she/it exists resides in an unproven,
human-created, spirit state of bliss called heaven??

I believe there was a 1st century CE, Jewish, simple,
preacher-man who was conceived by a Jewish carpenter
named Joseph living in Nazareth and born of a young Jewish
girl named Mary. (Some say he was a mamzer.)

Jesus was summarily crucified for being a temple rabble-rouser by
the Roman troops in Jerusalem serving under Pontius Pilate,

He was buried in an unmarked grave and still lies
a-mouldering in the ground somewhere outside of
    Jerusalem.

Said Jesus' story was embellished and "mythicized" by
many semi-fiction writers. A descent into Hell, a bodily resurrection
and ascension stories were promulgated to compete with the
Caesar myths. Said stories were so popular that they
grew into a religion known today as Catholicism/Christianity
and featuring dark-age, daily wine to blood and bread to body rituals
called the eucharistic sacrifice of the non-atoning Jesus.

    Amen

The bible does indeed reference Spare the Rod and Hate your Child. But if that is the case why then is Pastor Dollar denying any physical contact whatsoever to the police? He also has stood directly in front of his congregation and stated that incident was merely an argument.
