Pew survey: Doubt of God growing quickly among millennials

By Dan Merica, CNN

Washington (CNN) – The percentage of Americans 30 and younger who harbor some doubts about God’s existence appears to be growing quickly, according to a recent Pew Research Center survey. While most young Americans, 68%, told Pew they never doubt God’s existence, that’s a 15-point drop in just five years.

In 2007, 83% of American millennials said they never doubted God’s existence.

More young people are expressing doubts about God now than at any time since Pew started asking the question a decade ago. Thirty-one percent disagreed with the statement “I never doubt the existence of God,” double the number who disagreed with it in 2007.

Atheist organizer takes ‘movement’ to nation’s capital

When asked about doubts of God, no other generation showed a change of more than 2% in the past five years.

The survey found that the percentage of millennials who identify with a religion is remaining constant, while most other generations have seen religious identification increase in the past 10 years.

The findings about millennials and religion were part of a 168-page report that Pew released June 4 but were largely overlooked.

“Notably, people younger than 30 are substantially less likely than older people to say prayer is an important part of their lives,” the report said.

“Research on generational patterns shows that this is not merely a lifecycle effect,” it continued. “The Millennial generation is far less religious than were other preceding generations when they were the same age years ago.”

Atheist group targets Muslims, Jews with ‘myth’ billboards in Arabic and Hebrew

The findings are part of Pew’s 2012 American Values Survey, which touches on issues including political partisanship, gay marriage and abortion.

Despite the findings on millennials, the survey shows that the United States continues to be a highly religious nation, with most Americans identifying with a particular faith.

Seventy-six percent of all respondents said prayer is an important part of their lives and agreed that “we all will be called before god at the Judgment Day to answer for our sins.” About 80% said they have never doubted the existence of God.

The report points to a growing divide between the youngest and oldest Americans on belief, religion and social issues.

According to Jesse Galef, communications director for the Secular Student Alliance, the growth in “doubting” youths has led to a surge in secular student groups.

“For a lot of millennial atheists, they are expecting to find a group, they are coming to campus, and if they don’t find one, they are starting one,” Galef said. “This is completely different than what other generations grew up with.”

Atheist rally continues in spite of rain; students highlighted throughout

The Secular Student Alliance has affiliates on 357 American campuses, Galef said, up from 81 such affiliates in 2007.

Galef says the Internet has created a place for young people to discuss religious doubts.

“It enables anybody to have open discussions without fearing if their parents would find out or what their communities would say,” he said. "The more safe places we create for young people to discuss their doubts, the more they can inspire questions in others."

For me at least, the mental leap between the existence of a God vs no God is smaller than the leap that a God exists AND is Christian or Muslim or something else that has a holy book with ridiculous rules, who is trying to converse with us.

    This is great news, i hope by the time i have children this "trend" is in full force. We shouldn't be relying on mythology to guide us as a people. Is backwards thinking. Not to mention the sheer number of people who "preach the word" and still condemn everyone around them by picking and choosing lol. Marx had it rite from the very beginning;

You don't believe in the bible, But the bible foretold the birth of Christ 1500 years before he was born, no one then believed that, It foretold the rebirth of Israel, It foretold the decline of Christianity and the rise of the natural man thats you Bootyfunk, so for those who believe the Bible, Not to be confused with the Church, You Bootyfunk are proof of prophecy in motion. Of course you dont see that, you see it all as foolishness, And the bible fortold that as well! All of these atheists on this forum who are expressing there glee at the fall of Christianity is just fuel to the fire of those who have read and studied prophecy. Ill give you one little piece of prophecy to stick under your hat just for grins, The Bible foretold the complete destruction of Damascus, Of course its still there right now, Its the oldest continuous city in the world, But the old Bible says one of these days in the span of one night it will be reduced to rubble, no one will survive, no one will ever live there again. It says Israel will do this deed, so if you ever see Damascus go up in a poof of nuclear smoke, that old book of lies predicted that 3500 years ago.

Righty ho! Einstein's belief that "God doesn't play dice with the Universe" was the main reason for his inability to successfully pursue his quest for a Unified Force Theory. If he just left God out of the equation he would have adopted Quantum Mechanics and with that he could have had a great chance to conquer his quest.
It's time to think outside the box and realize that God didn't create Man but the opposite. Voltaire said "After God created the Universe He left it to it's own devices". That was a good start. Recent scientific findings point to a never-ending cycle of Big Bangs – not just the latest one we refer to as "The Big Bang". God has no role in this...
Among the greatest sinners over the course of human history were Men of the Robe, preaching the word of God to ignoramuses while barely holding their laughter!
Be good, kind and help others in time of need. We don't need any God to guide us to do that.

weJa: To begin, the need for a GUT grew out of the inconsistencies between quantum mechanics and general relativity. So even had Einstein adopted quantum mechanics it wouldn't have lead to the bridging of the gap. In fact, by denying quantum mechanics, Einstein attempted to say, "there is no gap" (since, in his mind, QM was wrong). All I'm saying here is that Einstein's ambitions for a GUT were not impaired by his belief in God. And, regarding your contempt for "men in robes". Of course, there have been horrible things done by the clergy in the past. All of us are only human (not an excuse ... just an observation). But lets weigh that against the good that's been done by the Church over the centuries. The missionary work, working with the poor, hospitals, promotion of education and sciences (yes ... the Catholic Church is an active promoter of the sciences), work in social justice. I think the spread sheet is clearly in the black.

Every person has a destiny, a fate. You cannot just believe that all of things that have happened to you in your life are all due to a great random occurance. God is real, and he has a plan for every single human being, weather you like it or not. Now I agree with some of the comments on here, like the churches that preach nothing but hell and damnation, and try to set an exact date for the second coming. I hate that. The problem with religion is that is has branched out to far. In every religion though, it comes back to one single purpose, and that is that there is something up in the sky that is guiding our lives. If churches could just get back to spreading love and peace throughout their teachings instead of hate and fear, then maybe our world would be a better place. That is, after all what God wanted. Human beings to live in peace and harmoney with one another, forever.

Religion was always the refuge of the oppressed from the oppressors. The Catholic Church evolved as the refuge from the Roman and other Imperial oppressors. The Catholic Church eventually grew into the oppressor, and along comes the Lutherans to create a refuge unattached to the Catholic Church. Islam is projected to become the dominent religion sometime in the 2020s. The reason is because, if you're in an Islamic sphere of influence, the imperialistic western powers are directly associated with Christianity. Everytime some Republicans stands up and yells "the US is a Christian country", that simply reinforces the mental ties between Christianity and western imperialistic manipulation of the Muslim world. While many Christians work to build understanding ties with Muslims, it is also true that the ignorant people yelling hate at Muslims call themselves Christians. Basically Christianity has had a long run now associating itself with political and military power, which means it has associated itself with oppression rather than being the refuge from oppression.

For those who wish to point a finger and say that Islam is oppressive, that is partially true but also very dependent upon a person's point of view. That would actually be a reference to right wing extremist Muslim fundamentalists, and it is a charge that is just as easily levelled against right wing extremist Christian fundamentalists. Much of what is viewed by the western world as "oppression" is viewed by right wing extremist Muslim fundamentalists as protecting themselves from the corrupting influence of western society. In other words, right wing extremist Muslim fundamentalists are protecting their refuge from western society. Again, it is all based on the person's point of view.

    MY personal testimony.
A thought to consider without an ego response

Accept Jesus christ as your lord and saviour. You never know how soon is too late. Transcend the worldly illusion of enslavement.
    The world denounces truth....

Accepting Jesus Christ (for me) resulted in something like seeng a new colour. You will see it .....but will not be able to clearly explain it to anyone else..... Its meant to be that way to transend any selfism within you.

Also... much the world arranges "surrounding dark matter into something to be debated" in such a way that protects/inflates the ego.

The key is be present and transcend our own desire to physically see evidence. We don't know anyways by defending our own perception of dark matter.

Currently.... most of us are constructing our own path that suits our sin lifestyle. Were all sinners. Knowing that we are is often an issue. But both christians and non are sinners.

We don't like to Let go and let god. We want control to some degree. This is what Jesus asks us to do. "Follow me".
It's the hardest thing to do... but is done by letting the truth of scripture lead you (redemptive revelation)... as I said .

Try reading corinthians and see if it makes sense to you. Try it without a pre conceived notion of it being a fairy tale.
    See the truth...
do we do what it says in todays society... is it relevant... so many have not recently read and only hinge their philosophy on what they have heard from som other person...which may have been full of arogance pride or vanity..

Look closely at the economy ponzi, look at how society idolizes Lust , greed , envy, sloth, pride of life, desire for knowledge, desire for power, desire for revencge, gluttony with food etc .

    Trancsend the temporal world.

Just think if you can find any truth you can take with you ....in any of these things. When you die your riches go to someone who will spend away your life..... You will be forgotten.... history will repeat iteslf.... the greatest minds knowledge fade or are eventually plagerzed..... your good deeds will be forgotten and only give you a fleeting temporary reward . your learned teachings are forgotten or mutated..... your gold is transfered back to the rullers that rule you through deception. Your grave will grow over . This is truth .

Trancsend your egoism and free yourself from this dominion of satan. Understand you are a sinner and part of the collective problem of this worldly matrix... Repent.... Repent means knowing (to change) The Holy spirit (within) will convict you beyond what you think you can do by yourself. Grace is given to those who renounce the world. That are" in" the world but not "of " the world.

Evidence follows faith. Faith does not follow evidence..... Faith above reason in Jesus Christ.

Faith comes by Reading or Hearing the word of god from the bible . Ask Jesus in faith for dicernment and start reading the new testament... You will be shocked when you lay down your preconceived notions and ....see and hear truth ... see how christ sets an example ... feel the truth....

    Read Ecclesiastes. Read corinthians.

You cant trancend your own egoism by adapting a world philosophy to suit your needs. Seek the truth in Christ.

Sell all your cleverness and purchase true bewilderment. You don't get what you want ....you get what you are in christ.

I promise this has been the truth for me. In Jesus christ .

Think of what you really have to lose. ...your ego?

Break the Matrix of illusion that holds your senses captive.

once you do . you too will have the wisdom of God that comes only through the Holy Spirit. Saved By grace through Faith. Just like seeing a new colour.... can't explain it to a transient caught in the matrix of worldly deception.
You will also see how the world suppresses this information and distorts it

You're all smart people . I tell the truth. Its hard to think out of the box when earthly thinking is the box.
I'ts a personal free experience you can do it free anytime . Don't wait till you are about to die.. START PUTTING YOUR TREASURES WHERE THEY REALLY MATTER >
Its awsome and It's just between you and Jesus

    my testimony

    Romans 10:9

"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."

Some brief instruction as to how god failed in his business because of where and when he opened his business:
God started his business in the middle of the world’s largest desert – among a group of illiterate and wandering tribes. God did this in spite of the fact that there were much larger civilizations already thriving in India and China. In both India and China, there were already very large cities and the civilization was already mostly literate in that the populations could read and write.

If god had launched his business in either of these two cultures, he would have gained a much larger global market share and obtained an insurmountable market share vs. Islam as an example. As it is, Islam started +/- 700 years AFTER christianity and has now overtaken christianity in global market share. Islam remains the fasted growing organized religious strain in the world. (Atheism, however is the fasted growing segment of the overall religious business landscape). So, not only did god blow a 700 year head-start, he also arranged for the mur_der of his one and only forever son in the middle of the same desert and among the same group of illiterate wandering goat herders for crying out loud. That was a huge mistake on top of the earlier huge mistakes and meant that god squandered his huge head start and sacrificed his Return On Investment (ROI) and eventual market share dominance by this very short-sighted set of decisions. Look where his business is today. It is losing customers faster than it can replace them by acquiring new ones; the business is in disrepute among many of its long-time customers; it is losing actual raw numbers of customers in some parts of the world where it used to be the only option; its customers are being mur_dered in many other parts of the world for simply being his customers – it’s a real mess. So, I’d suggest anyone starting a similar new business avoid these mistakes so that the mur_der you planned for your only son and then performed so that you could later use as a recruiting tool/story might actually produce a higher ROI for you than it did for god.

"Think for yourself" This is such misleading Atheistic catch phrase. Turn on prime time secular tv, go to the movies, listen to popular music, the content is anything but Christian...these are the biggest influences on most kids...it takes a lot for a someone to counter their peer group and not "think like their friends". @kindness, I've already addressed your post before... apparently my pointing out that religion is the ultimate expression of ego and that faith is only pretending to know something you don't, didn't make a dent. Since you seem to not understand the approach I took pointing out how religion is about exclusivity, therefore born of ego by definition, i.e., us and them, allow me to just speak directly to you.

You are so much more than this silly religious story you are telling yourself. All stories we tell ourselves about who we are or why we matter or silly, so I'm not singling out religion when I say this. You think you need religion to feel special, but you don't. You can let go of it and be free and I promise you will find peace eventually. If you feel defensive to this, then know that it is your ego's defense mechanism trying to protect itself. You can be so much more than this.

"the world arranges surrounding dark matter into something to be debated. Wrong again, in Physics dark matter is a "hypothesis" to account for a large part of the universe. Science has the humility to say "we don't know anything about dark matter and until we do this is only a hypothesis". Religion arranges and modifies and corrupts truth as convenient and shoves it down your throat.
:Lust , greed , envy, sloth, pride of life, desire for knowledge, desire for power, desire for revencge, gluttony with food etc " -the Old testament "God" embodies all these so? what's your point?

Okay now its time for your meds. Go get a life.

I will be in paradise...where will you spend your eternity? Anyone who is a non-believer WILL be damned to hell. If you think your life sucks on this earth now, just wait until your soul is screaming in the fire pit. I can honestly say I am saved and my life on this earth has been blessed over and over because of my faith in Christ. Give your life to Christ and you will be more happy and at peace within yourself than any lie this world will sell you.

@Mine, I can guarantee that the smartest atheists are smarter than the smartest christians on average. That's why most scientists and mathematicians are in fact atheist. In fact, studies have shown that critical thinking lessens your belief in god. So while you may think that people are trying to hurt your feeling about being smarter than you, the fact of the matter is, they likely are. If you look at one of the statistics that says 46% of Americans doubt evolution and believe that the earth is less than 10k years old, you have evidence that people who know this to be total nonsense are smarter than people who buy into it. Now, I know that things like facts and evidence don't matter much to christians, but you have to at least recognize what we base our assumptions of intelligence on. This doesn't mean that you can't get smarter either. You have just as much access to the information as anyone else. While you may plateau at a particular intellectual level, you can always grow and improve your mind. Intelligence comes from study and discipline. Ignorance is without fault. Willful ignorance (faith in spite of evidence to the contrary) is stupidity.

If you want to be respected and taken seriously by us, study our teachings as diligently as we study yours.

If your god reqards blind belief and gullibility, and punishes reason and evidence, then that is not a being that should be worshipped.

Ever notice that the better we got at reliably recording actual historical events, the less god appeared until he finally just disappeared? The better we get at understanding how the universe actually works, the harder it will be to believe in something that can't be proven.

the only definition of God that works is God is the unknown. Nothing wrong with that I suppose, as long as it doesn't stop people from finding better answers, and making that which was once unknown, known.

yeah, heard that prediction a million times. know what the "last days" predictors have had in common? they've all been wrong. mostly because there's no such thing as god or "last days'.

So far those predicting 'end of days' or 'the rapture' are batting 0.00. They have been 100% wrong. So why should I believe they have any more insight into anything else?

There have been last days for 2000 years now. What makes you any different than all the others that made the same prediction over the last few millennium?

II'll bet that 90% of those who say they do not believe in God are the ones who squeal "Oh, God!" when they get really scared or are in pain. Just sayin'

that's the old 'no atheists in a foxhole' propaganda. there are numerous doc.umented cases of atheists in foxholes and other life-threatening situations that don't suddenly become theists, myself included.

and all it would prove anyway is that when people become frightened, they stop thinking rationally.

I'm pretty sure "Oh my God" is an English language colloquialism and therefore can be used by anyone.
