White House receives political cover on immigration from religious groups

By Jessica Yellin and Dan Merica

Washington (CNN) – President Barack Obama is receiving political cover for his decision to stop deporting some young illegal immigrants from two big groups with whom his relations have been rocky: evangelical Christians and Catholics.

“We do give credit where credit is due,” said Kevin Appleby, director of Migration and Public Affairs for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, on Friday, when Obama made his announcement.

“We welcome the announcement, it will provide important relief to a vulnerable group that we believe should remain in the country,” Appleby said. “They didn't come here on their own volition; they came here with their parents. They are virtually Americans.”

In recent months, the Catholic bishops have hammered the White House over its new rule requiring insurance companies to offer free contraception to all employees, with a major Catholic religious liberty campaign around the issue scheduled to launch later this month. The Catholic Church has filed dozens of lawsuits across the country against the so-called contraception mandate.

It would seem that the White House learned from that fallout, consulting with religious leaders in advance of Friday’s immigration announcement.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

Earlier this week, senior White House officials met with a diverse group of evangelical organizations on the issue of immigration reform. That group, which included conservative Southern Baptist leader Richard Land, progressive evangelical Jim Wallis and the National Association of Evangelicals’ Leith Anderson, endorsed an “Evangelical Statement of Principles for Immigration Reform” that includes calling for a path to citizenship for undocumented workers.

The statement also called for respect for “the God given dignity of every person” and respect for “the rule of law.”

The president’s Friday announcement was met with praise by some top leaders in the American evangelical community, a demographic the president has struggled with, largely over his recently announced support for gay marriage and his support of abortion rights.

“This new policy is good news for America and is good news for undocumented young adults who came to America through the choice of others,” said Leith Anderson, president of the National Association of Evangelicals, on Friday. “It is the right thing to do.”

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

Jim Wallis, who leads a social justice group called Sojourners, called the Friday announcement from Obama “very good news for 1 million young people who have a dream of staying in the country where they have lived most of their lives.”

“As evangelicals we love the ‘good news’ of the gospel, and today we affirm this good news that gives hope and a future for young immigrants who are an important part of both the church and this country,” Wallis said.

Under the new policy, people younger than 30 who came to the United States before the age of 16, pose no criminal or security threat, and were successful students or served in the military can get a two-year deferral from deportation, according to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

The announcement drew sharp criticism from many conservative political groups and leaders, who say the new policy is tantamount to amnesty or is a big step toward amnesty for hundreds of thousands of undocumented young people.

Not all evangelical groups were supportive of the president’s decision, either.

“We are not supporting this announcement,” said Tom Minnery, a senior vice president at Focus on the Family, an evangelical organization headquartered in Colorado. “The first two years he had Democratic control of Congress and promised to fix immigration in his first year and he hasn’t done so. It is hard to take the president seriously after that.”

Minnery’s comments come after Jim Daly, president of Focus on the Family, supported the broad evangelical statement of principles.

“We believe that the biblical notion of the family is so significant that anything we can do aims to keep families together,” we will support, said Minnery.

That notion means that many evangelicals consider keeping families together an issue of faith, says Robert Jones, CEO of Public Religion Research Institute.

“Evangelicals care about keeping families together and deportation splits families up,” Jones said. “Evangelicals certainly have a long history in thinking about the importance of family and keeping parents in the home. Some of the realities of the current policy evoke a passionate response among evangelicals.”

In a survey last year by PRRI, most evangelicals were supportive of comprehensive immigration reform. When asked how to deal with illegal immigration, 54% of evangelicals supported a plan that included a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants already in the United States. Forty three percent supported deportation.

The August poll also points to a generational divide among evangelicals. When asked about policies that include a path to citizenship, 55% of evangelicals 18-39 years old supported the idea. By comparison, only 34% of evangelicals 65 and older supported the same policy.

Younger evangelicals “have grown up in a more diverse world then their parents and grandparents and that has given them a different perspective on this issue,” Jones said.

One senior administration official sees talks over immigration as the start of a conversation with evangelicals. “While today's Dream Act actions were not discussed in that meeting, the broad support of conservative evangelicals for immigration reform was welcomed by the administration.”

Why doesen't the White House do something about the LAZY IRISH bishops in the USA, these perverts hate the ethnic Polish and Lithuanian churches. They steal the money from the ethnic churches and then closes the churches or they state it is no longer a Polish church! These PIGS are getting away with it, people are dumb and put up with it. My people came from Poland and worked like slaves in the coal mines of northeastern PA. The lazy irish had the good jobs in the mines, banks, schools, etc. You should look at the UGLY irish church in Shenandoah PA. These people had the money and had no respect for GOD. Now look at the Polish church with over 8,400 sq. balconys on either side a large 3 manuel, 2 chamber MP Moller Pipe organ, it would cost over 2 million US dolars to replace and now the over weight FAT-PIG bishop of Allentown is saying "it is not a Polish church" Well I will go down to my last breath and I don't care if I am the only one. Saint Casimr's is a POLISH ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH. Do you get chorelda bishop, I wish you and Mitt Romney rot a slow cancerous and painful death.

And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months; it opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming His Name and His dwelling, that is, those who dwell in heaven. Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them. And authority was given it over every tribe and people and tongue and nation, and all who dwell on earth will worship it, every one whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb that was slain." The reason the Catholic church is so adamant against using rubbers is because they fear there will be a shortage of young boys for the Priests to molest.

      At Realityville,

Prove it wasn't. Ooooh, it's the same exact thing. It can't be proven either way. However, when things keep working out over the long-term for those who pray, that indicates something.

You think you have a handle on reality because you can say why the clouds are blowing, because of the winds, and why the winds are blowing because of the rotation of the earth, changes in humidity, heat, cold, and the currents of the ocean. And why are all those things happening, because of the sun, tectonic movements, and polar temperatures, and why are all those things the way they are, we speculate that it's because of how the earth was formed, the center has yet to cool down, radioactive decay, and the sun. Why the sun, in the end you get to a point where all you can do is speculate because you can't prove anything anymore, and you assume that because the wind blows this way, and creates this rain that it wasn't God at all, but must have been something to do with all the other factors, but what you don't truly realize is you're right, only God is driving force behind all those other factors, those ones you can only speculate about because it is impossible to prove them. You see, the answer is in the Alpha and the Omega. This little phrase here means that even if you could prove that the fire from heaven the consumed Sodom and Gamorrah was but a mere meteor that impacted the earth on that spot, what you don't realize is the creator of it all sent that asteroid from the time that we can only speculate about because God knew the beginning from the end, is the very puppet master of existence itself, knew what the people would decide, and set the universe in motion, ie pulls the strings of the base factors that cause everything else to work.

You see, God is so far outside our spectrum of existence, our ability to understand, to even comprehend, our little piece of existence, our tiny world, that we cannot fathom Him. We find it easier to believe that it all just is than to accept that there is a master puppet master behind it all. Fortunately for us that puppet master has decided to give us the freedom to rule our own world and to choose how we shall live our lives. However, for the sake of those that pray and depend upon Him, being truly just, He won't ignore them. But you won't see that because you've decided that everything that happens has nothing to do with God whatsoever.

    1. You believe that the pope has personal conversations with God (that nobody else ever hears) and is infallible when speaking on matters of Church doctrine. You then wistfully ignore the fact that Church doctrine changes and that former popes therefore could not possibly have been “infallible”. Limbo, for example, was touted by pope after pope as a place where un-baptized babies who die go, until Pope Benedict XVI just eradicated it (or, more accurately, so watered it down as effectively eradicate it in a face saving way). Seems all those earlier “infallible” Popes were wrong – as they were on Adam and Eve v. evolution, heliocentricity v. egocentricity, and a host of other issues that required an amendment of official Church doctrine. You also ignore the innumerable murders, rampant corruption and other crimes committed over the centuries by your “infallible”, god-conversing popes.
    2. You reject the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of yours. You are blissfully (or intentionally) blind to the fact, that had you been born in another part of the World, you would be defending the local god(s) and disdaining the incorrectness of Catholic beliefs.
    3. You begrudgingly accept evolution (about a century after Darwin proved it and after accepting Genesis as literally true for about 2,000 years) and that Adam and Eve was totally made up, but then conveniently ignore that fact that your justification for Jesus dying on the cross (to save us from Original Sin) has therefore been eviscerated. Official Church literature still dictates a belief in this nonsense.
    4. You disdain native beliefs as “polytheist” and somehow “inferior” but cannot explain (i) why being polytheistic is any sillier than being monotheistic. Once you make the quantum leap into Wonderland by believing in sky-fairies, what difference does if make if you believe in one or many?; nor (ii) why Christians believe they are monotheistic, given that they believe in god, the devil, guardian angels, the holy spirit, Jesus, many demons in hell, the Virgin Mary, the angel Gabriel, thousands of saints, all of whom apparently make Earthly appearances periodically, and all of whom inhabit their life-after-death lands with magic-sacred powers of some kind.
    5. You bemoan the "atrocities" attributed to Allah, but you don`t even flinch when hearing about how God/Jehovah slaughtered all the babies of Egypt in "Exodus" and ordered the elimination of entire ethnic groups in "Joshua" including women, children, and trees or the 3,000 Israelites killed by Moses for worshipping the golden calf (or the dozen or so other slaughters condoned by the bible). You also like to look to god to for guidance in raising your children, ignoring the fact that he drowned his own – according to your Bible.
    6. You laugh at Hindu beliefs that deify humans, and Greek claims about gods sleeping with women, but you have no problem believing that God impregnated Mary with himself, to give birth to himself, so he could sacrifice himself to himself to “forgive” an ”Original Sin” that we now all know never happened.
    7. You disdain gays as sinners, but have no problem when Lot got drunk and committed father-daughter in.cest (twice) or offered his daughters to a mob to be gang ra.ped, or when Moses, time and again, offered his wife up for the “pleasures” of the Egyptians to save his own skin.
    8. You believe that your god will cause anyone who does not accept your Bronze Age stories to suffer a penalty an infinite times worse than the death penalty (burning forever in excruciating torture) simply because of their healthy skepticism, yet maintain that god “loves them”.
    9. You will totally reject any scientific breakthrough that is inconsistent with your established doctrine, unless and until it is so generally accepted as to back you into a corner. While modern science, history, geology, biology, and physics have failed to convince you of the deep inanity of your silly faith, some priest doing magic hand signals over bread and wine is enough to convince you it is thereby transformed into the flesh and blood of Jesus because of the priest’s magic powers (or “sacred powers” to the extent you see a difference).
    10. You define 0.01% as a "high success rate" when it comes to Lourdes, Fátima and other magic places and prayers in general. You consider that to be evidence that prayer works. The remaining 99.99% failure was simply “god moving in mysterious ways”. The fact that, if you ask for something repeatedly, over and over, year after year, sooner or later that thing is bound to happen anyway, has not even occurred to you. A stopped clock is right twice a day.
    11. You accept the stories in the Bible without question, despite not having the slightest idea of who actually wrote them, how credible these people were or how long the stories were written after the alleged events they record occurred. For example, it is impossible for Moses to have written the first five books of the Old Testament, as Catholics believe. For one, they record his death and events after his death. In fact, the chance of the Bible being historically accurate in any but the broadest terms is vanishingly small.
Heavens, I could not fit them into ten. Maybe, if they pray hard enough to their sky-fairy, the Catholics can turn them into 10

    MY personal testimony.
A thought to consider without an ego response

Accept Jesus christ as your lord and saviour. You never know how soon is too late. Transcend the worldly illusion of enslavement.
    The world denounces truth....

Accepting Jesus Christ (for me) resulted in something like seeng a new colour. You will see it .....but will not be able to clearly explain it to anyone else..... Its meant to be that way to transend any selfism within you.

Also... much the world arranges "surrounding dark matter into something to be debated" in such a way that protects/inflates the ego.

The key is be present and transcend our own desire to physically see evidence. We don't know anyways by defending our own perception of dark matter.

Currently.... most of us are constructing our own path that suits our sin lifestyle. Were all sinners. Knowing that we are is often an issue. But both christians and non are sinners.

We don't like to Let go and let god. We want control to some degree. This is what Jesus asks us to do. "Follow me".
It's the hardest thing to do... but is done by letting the truth of scripture lead you (redemptive revelation)... as I said .

Try reading corinthians and see if it makes sense to you. Try it without a pre conceived notion of it being a fairy tale.
    See the truth...
do we do what it says in todays society... is it relevant... so many have not recently read and only hinge their philosophy on what they have heard from som other person...which may have been full of arogance pride or vanity..

Look closely at the economy ponzi, look at how society idolizes Lust , greed , envy, sloth, pride of life, desire for knowledge, desire for power, desire for revencge, gluttony with food etc .

    Trancsend the temporal world.

Just think if you can find any truth you can take with you ....in any of these things. When you die your riches go to someone who will spend away your life..... You will be forgotten.... history will repeat iteslf.... the greatest minds knowledge fade or are eventually plagerzed..... your good deeds will be forgotten and only give you a fleeting temporary reward . your learned teachings are forgotten or mutated..... your gold is transfered back to the rullers that rule you through deception. Your grave will grow over . This is truth .

Trancsend your egoism and free yourself from this dominion of satan. Understand you are a sinner and part of the collective problem of this worldly matrix... Repent.... Repent means knowing (to change) The Holy spirit (within) will convict you beyond what you think you can do by yourself. Grace is given to those who renounce the world. That are" in" the world but not "of " the world.

Evidence follows faith. Faith does not follow evidence..... Faith above reason in Jesus Christ.

Faith comes by Reading or Hearing the word of god from the bible . Ask Jesus in faith for dicernment and start reading the new testament... You will be shocked when you lay down your preconceived notions and ....see and hear truth ... see how christ sets an example ... feel the truth....

    Read Ecclesiastes. Read corinthians.

You cant trancend your own egoism by adapting a world philosophy to suit your needs. Seek the truth in Christ.

Sell all your cleverness and purchase true bewilderment. You don't get what you want ....you get what you are in christ.

I promise this has been the truth for me. In Jesus christ .

Think of what you really have to lose. ...your ego?

Break the Matrix of illusion that holds your senses captive.

once you do . you too will have the wisdom of God that comes only through the Holy Spirit. Saved By grace through Faith. Just like seeing a new colour.... can't explain it to a transient caught in the matrix of worldly deception.
You will also see how the world suppresses this information and distorts it

You're all smart people . I tell the truth. Its hard to think out of the box when earthly thinking is the box.
I'ts a personal free experience you can do it free anytime . Don't wait till you are about to die.. START PUTTING YOUR TREASURES WHERE THEY REALLY MATTER >
Its awsome and It's just between you and Jesus

    my testimony

    Romans 10:9

"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved

I Follow Christ . I never wanted proof. I just had faith.

HE WHO follows Me, walks not in darkness,” says the Lord (John 8:12). By these words
of Christ we are advised to imitate His life and habits, if we wish to be truly enlightened and
free from all blindness of heart. Let our chief effort, therefore, be to study the life of Jesus
      Christ.
The teaching of Christ is more excellent than all the advice of the saints, and he who
has His spirit will find in it a hidden manna. Now, there are many who hear the Gospel often
but care little for it because they have not the spirit of Christ. Yet whoever wishes to understand
fully the words of Christ must try to pattern his whole life on that of Christ.

What good does it do to speak learnedly about the Trinity if, lacking humility, you
displease the Trinity? Indeed it is not learning that makes a man holy and just, but a virtuous
life makes him pleasing to God. I would rather feel contrition than know how to define it.
For what would it profit us to know the whole Bible by heart and the principles of all the
philosophers if we live without grace and the love of God? Vanity of vanities and all is vanity,
except to love God and serve Him alone.

This is the greatest wisdom—to seek the kingdom of heaven through contempt of the
world. It is vanity, therefore, to seek and trust in riches that perish. It is vanity also to court
honor and to be puffed up with pride. It is vanity to follow the lusts of the body and to desire
things for which severe punishment later must come. It is vanity to wish for long life and
to care little about a well-spent life. It is vanity to be concerned with the present only and
not to make provision for things to come. It is vanity to love what passes quickly and not
to look ahead where eternal joy abides.
Often recall the proverb: “The eye is not satisfied with seeing nor the ear filled with
hearing.”1 Try, moreover, to turn your heart from the love of things visible and bring
yourself to things invisible. For they who follow their own evil passions stain their consciences
and lose the grace of God.

See for yourself. You will be on a battlefield for christ..

Well since he had record number deportations in his first year, I guess nobody can say that he isn't tough on immigration. There is no easy fix but at least he is taking a moral high ground and the republicans sure can't say that about themselves.

What a headline: "receives political cover" is intended to make the announcement, and the President, sound cowardly, even though the news here is that evangelical and catholic groups support the decision. How different the headline sounds if you rewrite it to read simply: "Evangelical, Catholic groups support Obama on immigration announcement". That's the news, without spin.

Having eliminated several million "potential" taxpayers since 1973, our Premier and his pro-choice devotees will be wondering whose paying into Social Security. "Hey, not to worry, aging liberals. We'll let in lots of immigrants to fund your old age."

Look at the funny old men in their expensive fancy dresses and silly hats. I wonder if they know that their emperor has no clothes.
