Episcopal Church approves same-sex blessing service

By Michael Pearson, CNN

(CNN) - Episcopal priests will be allowed to conduct services blessing same-sex relationships under a policy approved Tuesday at the church's national convention in Indianapolis.

The convention's House of Bishops approved the provisional policy 111-41 with three abstentions Monday, clearing it for consideration by the House of Deputies, which approved it Tuesday evening.

The policy was approved in the House of Deputies, following more than an hour of debate, by 78% of the voting lay members and by 76% of clergy.

With the vote, the Episcopal Church will become the largest U.S. denomination to officially sanction same-sex relationships. The Episcopal Church has about 1.95 million members in the United States, down 16% over the last decade, according to the church.

The service is not considered a marriage ceremony, media affairs representative Nancy Davidge said.

  1. Proclamation from 100 Pastors

As Christian clergy we proclaim the Good News concerning Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) persons and publicly apologize where we have been silent. As disciples of Jesus, who assures us that the truth sets us free, we recognize that the debate is over. The verdict is in. Homosexuality is not a sickness, not a choice, and not a sin. We find no rational biblical or theological basis to condemn or deny the rights of any person based on sexual orientation. Silence by many has allowed political and religious rhetoric to monopolize public perception, creating the impression that there is only one Christian perspective on this issue. Yet we recognize and celebrate that we are far from alone, as Christians, in affirming that LGBT persons are distinctive, holy, and precious gifts to all who struggle to become the family of God.

In repentance and obedience to the Holy Spirit, we stand in solidarity as those who are committed to work and pray for full acceptance and inclusion of LGBT persons in our churches and in our world. We lament that LGBT persons are condemned and excluded by individuals and institutions, political and religious, who claim to be speaking the truth of Christian teaching. This leads directly and indirectly to intolerance, discrimination, suffering, and even death. The Holy Spirit compels us:

    -to affirm that the essence of Christian life is not focused on sexual orientation, but how one lives by grace in relationship with God, with compassion toward humanity;

    –to embrace the full inclusion of our LGBT brothers and sisters in all areas of church life, including leadership;

    –to declare that the violence must stop. Christ’s love moves us to work for the healing of wounded souls who are victims of abuse often propagated in the name of Christ;

    –to celebrate the prophetic witness of all people who have refused to let the voice of intolerance and violence speak for Christianity, especially LGBT persons, who have met hatred with love;

Therefore we call for an end to all religious and civil discrimination against any person based on sexual orientation and gender identity and expression. All laws must include and protect the freedoms, rights, and equal legal standing of all persons, in and outside the church.

It must be because you resent what you think God wants you to do and you want to make sure no one else gets away with anything you don't approve of. If you couldn't count on seeing people suffer in the afterlife it would mean all your sanctimony on earth was a waste.

I think most bibletards hate atheists because we generally have a better lot in life than they do. Statistically, we are better educated, have higher income, enjoy higher standard of living, have lower divorce rates, lower incarceration rates, our children have lower teen pregnancy rates, we have lower obesity rates, and are far less likely to be a victim of a crime.

I guess when your real life sucks, it makes a lot of sense to live for the promise of a good one after this one is over.

"Abomination 2000 years ago, abomination today!"

Some argue that since homosexual behavior is "unnatural" it is contrary to the order of creation. Behind this pronouncement are stereotypical definitions of masculinity and femininity that reflect rigid gender categories of patriarchal society. There is nothing unnatural about any shared love, even between two of the same gender, if that experience calls both partners to a fuller state of being. Contemporary research is uncovering new facts that are producing a rising conviction that homosexuality, far from being a sickness, sin, perversion or unnatural act, is a healthy, natural and affirming form of human sexuality for some people. Findings indicate that homosexuality is a given fact in the nature of a significant portion of people, and that it is unchangeable.

Our prejudice rejects people or things outside our understanding. But the God of creation speaks and declares, "I have looked out on everything I have made and `behold it (is) very good'." . The word (Genesis 1:31) of God in Christ says that we are loved, valued, redeemed, and counted as precious no matter how we might be valued by a prejudiced world.

There are few biblical references to homosexuality. The first, the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, is often quoted to prove that the Bible condemns homosexuality. But the real sin of Sodom was the unwillingness of the city's men to observe the laws of hospitality. The intention was to insult the stranger by forcing him to take the female role in the sex act. The biblical narrative approves Lot's offer of his virgin daughters to satisfy the sexual demands of the mob. How many would say, "This is the word of the Lord"? When the Bible is quoted literally, it might be well for the one quoting to read the text in its entirety.

Leviticus, in the Hebrew Scriptures, condemns homosexual behaviour, at least for males. Yet, "abomination", the word Leviticus uses to describe homosexuality, is the same word used to describe a menstruating woman. Paul is the most quoted source in the battle to condemn homosexuality ( 1 Corinthians 6: 9-11 and Romans 1: 26-27). But homosexual activity was regarded by Paul as a punishment visited upon idolaters by God because of their unfaithfulness. Homosexuality was not the sin but the punishment.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11, Paul gave a list of those who would not inherit the Kingdom of God. That list included the immoral, idolaters, adulterers, sexual perverts, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, and robbers. Sexual perverts is a translation of two words; it is possible that the juxtaposition of malakos, the soft, effeminate word, with arsenokoitus, or male prostitute, was meant to refer to the passive and active males in a homosexual liaison.

Thus, it appears that Paul would not approve of homosexual behavior. But was Paul's opinion about homosexuality accurate, or was it limited by the lack of scientific knowledge in his day and infected by prejudice born of ignorance? An examination of some of Paul's other assumptions and conclusions will help answer this question. Who today would share Paul's anti-Semitic attitude, his belief that the authority of the state was not to be challenged, or that all women ought to be veiled? In these attitudes Paul's thinking has been challenged and transcended even by the church! Is Paul's commentary on homosexuality more absolute than some of his other antiquated, culturally conditioned ideas?

Three other references in the New Testament (in Timothy, Jude and 2 Peter) appear to be limited to condemnation of male sex slaves in the first instance, and to showing examples (Sodom and Gomorrah) of God's destruction of unbelievers and heretics (in Jude and 2 Peter respectively).

That is all that Scripture has to say about homosexuality. Even if one is a biblical literalist, these references do not build an ironclad case for condemnation. If one is not a biblical literalist there is no case at all, nothing but prejudice born of ignorance, that attacks people whose only crime is to be born with an unchangeable sexual predisposition toward those of their own sex

      "the bible is the truth"

The stories found in the Book of Genesis, Chapter 1-12, such as the flood story, the record is quite different: the time period under consideration is much more ancient. The factual bases of the stories are hidden from our view archaeologically. The stories remain a part of folk traditions and were included in the Bible to illustrate and explain theological ideas such as: Where did humans come from? If humans were created by God (who is perfect and good), how did evil among them come to be? If we are all related as children of God, why do we speak different languages? It must be remembered that the Bible is primarily a book of religion, a guide to faith. it was not a book of history, poetry, economics, or science. It contains all sorts of literary genre, which are used to teach about the relationship between God and mankind. Even biblical history is edited history: events were chosen to illustrate the central theme of the Bible. The Biblical writers did not pretend they were giving a complete history; instead they constantly refer us to other sources for full historical details, sources such as "The Annals of the Kings of Judah" (or Israel).

It is therefore not possible to try to "prove" the Bible by means of checking its historical or scientific accuracy. The only "proof" to which it can be subjected is this: Does it correctly portray the God-human relationship? In the best analysis, the Bible is a religious book, not an historical document.

      July 10, 2012 at 2:21 pm |
    • Sue

"I've run rings around you logically"

But what if the rings aren't round? then they couldn't go around me. And what if logic was just a word that meant whatever I say the bible says is true makes it instantly true? I think words should just mean whatever I want them to mean...

      @Smithsonian

"The only "proof" to which it can be subjected is this: Does it correctly portray the God-human relationship?"
The only way you can actually tackle that question is by establishing that the god it portrays even exists. Without that, the entire argument is built on a flawed premise.

It is odd that, if an all-knowing, all-powerful god exists and is opposed to gay marriage, he can't even win an election in his own church.

    July 10, 2012 at 1:43 pm |
    • tis true

I am not againt gay marriage ....but I condemn Churches who would bless it...It is the states power to enforce marriages but the Church can only bless it in the name of the Lord...andy christian or church who does should be condemned and ex communicated.....this is the only biblical position whic hall Christians should have already adopted... but the serpents in control of so much of so called Christian thinking today have already inflamed the issue beyond reasonable understanding...

This post right here is the only proper way to deal with the isssue that should make all parties happy ... 🙂

too bad so many Christians do not observe the second great commandment ... ie do unto other as you would have them do unto you.....the reason probably is because they "DO NOT "not Love The Lord their God above all things with ALL THEIR HEARTS .... 🙁 🙁 🙁

Gayness is a certain indicator for disbelief concerning the Christian faith.

    Why?

Someone who trusts God will wait until the day, when God gives him a wife. There may be some struggle with the own body, which has inherited the greedy nature of the degenerated Adam, but if someone remembers the power of Christ's death and resurrection, he can overcome his sinful body.

Gayness is merely the madness of people, which have totally abandoned the trust in the loving God.

Dear gay, God delivered his precious Son for your sins. Ain't that a obvious sign of his love, and when he loves you, he will give you a wife in due course.

"Gayness is merely the madness of people,"

You are so full of crap. Heterosexual behavior and homosexual behavior are normal aspects of human sexuality. Despite the persistence of stereotypes that portray lesbian, gay, and bisexual people as disturbed, several decades of research and clinical experience have led all mainstream medical and mental health organizations in this country to conclude that these orientations represent normal forms of human experience. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the American School Counselor Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the National Association of SocialWorkers, together representing more than 480,000 mental health professionals, have all taken the position that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and thus is not something that needs to or can be “cured."

    Reality

    • The moderators of this blog have set up a secret forbidden word filter which unfortunately not only will delete or put your comment in the dreaded "waiting for moderation" category but also will do the same to words having fragments of these words. For example, "t-it" is in the set but the filter will also pick up words like Hitt-ite, t-itle, beati-tude, practi-tioner and const-tution. Then there are words like "an-al" thereby flagging words like an-alysis and "c-um" flagging acc-umulate or doc-ument. And there is also "r-a-pe", “a-pe” and “gra-pe”, "s-ex", and "hom-ose-xual". You would think that the moderators would have corrected this by now considering the number of times this has been commented on but they have not. To be safe, I typically add hyphens in any word that said filter might judge "of-fensive".

    • Make sure the web address does not have any forbidden word or fragment.

Sum Dude routinely updates the list of forbidden words/fragments.

Two of the most filtered words are those containing the fragments "t-it" and "c-um". To quickly check your comments for these fragments, click on "Edit" on the Tool Bar and then "Find" on the menu. Add a fragment (without hyphens) one at a time in the "Find" slot and the offending fragment will be highlighted in your comments before you hit the Post button. Hyphenate the fragment(s) and then hit Post. And remember more than one full web address will also gain a "Waiting for Moderation".

And said moderators still have not solved the chronological placement of comments once the number of comments gets above about 100. They recently have taken to dividing the comments in batches of 50 or so, for some strange reason. Maybe they did this to solve the chronology problem only to make comment reviews beyond the tedious.

We urgently need a free international council of the Christian Churches about the issue of blessing same-se-x relationships.

If that council would be staged in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, I could predict the decision of the council:

All evil heretics, which support and promote the blessing of same-se-x couples, have to be excluded from the Christian Church: Anathema.

The Episcopal Church immediately needs a new leadership. The current bishops of the Episcopal Church should be given the boots, and be replaced by pious bishops, which really live as Christians in daily life by the power of Jesus' call, which is the sacramental baptism.

    I am a Lutheran.

Membership is down by 16% for a reason. Those that are trying to stay true to the teachings have left and many have joined the Catholic Church where they remain obedient to the definition of marriage between a man and a woman. Although probably well intentioned, Espiscopalians have lost their way on this issue and it will lead to continued erosion of their faith as they continue to embrace the culture of the day.

      god won't bless it?
Well...the only time they might see god is after death, and marriage is until death...so they're good.

man lie with man as with a women....doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out!

"abomination was his exact words thank you."

no, those are the translated words of iron age sheep boinkers

    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

That's not what it said. If it took a rocket scientist, I wouldn't ask you.

      July 10, 2012 at 1:49 pm |
    • Sue

If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
      You're welcome!

    • Religion is the #1 problem in this world by far

Maybe "god" should stop making gay people then. Or maybe Christians can stop worrying about how other people live when it doesn't affect anyone else in the slightest way.

    • Sue

he makes gay people no more than he makes pedophiles and murders or people who ra pe animals. They want to do it. God didn't make them do it. They choose.

"abomination was his exact words thank you."

Anyone else find this funny? It's God's "exact" words that were said by some guy no one can prove existed let alone prove divine, that were then paraphrased thirty to forty years after his death by people who weren't even there when he may or may not have said them, which were then voted on 350 years later by a pagan Roman council that were deciding on how to best control the people and the religious narative of their time...which was then translated and deciphered by thousands of different persons who all came to widely differing conclusions about the meaning or the words or the content as a whole, and that is how you arrive at God's "exact words"...

Oh, and you know this how, Sue?

      Sue
what you are quoting is liviticus, is it not?
because you quote it so badly is why I am wondering
If it is, read all of it....pretty much anyone who has any kind of s e x, that is not one man and his wife, is to be put to death.
That entire book is clearly written by an insane person.

Or maybe I should ask a rocket scientist, since you're not too good with facts.

The passage you're citing is not about h0mos3xuality.

sue: did god make you a bigot, or do you choose to be one?

      July 10, 2012 at 2:03 pm |
    • Sue

Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son......millions of bible scholars disagree with you....so what makes you an authority on the Word of God????

    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

Same thing that makes you one. Susie.

There are millions of scholars who interpret that passage differently. Why should your opinion hold sway?

    • alright

Who died and made Sue god?

Apparently the sin of pride doesn't apply to Sue, who knows, unequivocally, the mind of god.

Sue, do you enjoy being such a righteous bigot?

      July 10, 2012 at 2:06 pm |
    • *facepalm*

Sue – why do you have so much hate in your heart? Why do you feel the need to judge and condemn others – is your god not capable of doing so?

And when did you choose to be straight?

Trust me Sue, only a spiteful God would create you with such limited comprehension and understanding and yet expect you to be compassionate for others. I'm sure he will overlook your sin of hubris and just being a dick in general...
