Episcopal Church approves same-sex blessing service

By Michael Pearson, CNN

(CNN) - Episcopal priests will be allowed to conduct services blessing same-sex relationships under a policy approved Tuesday at the church's national convention in Indianapolis.

The convention's House of Bishops approved the provisional policy 111-41 with three abstentions Monday, clearing it for consideration by the House of Deputies, which approved it Tuesday evening.

The policy was approved in the House of Deputies, following more than an hour of debate, by 78% of the voting lay members and by 76% of clergy.

With the vote, the Episcopal Church will become the largest U.S. denomination to officially sanction same-sex relationships. The Episcopal Church has about 1.95 million members in the United States, down 16% over the last decade, according to the church.

The service is not considered a marriage ceremony, media affairs representative Nancy Davidge said.

  1. What's atheist logic?

    God made me gay.
    God made me a drunk.
    God made me a pervert.
    God made me a serial killer.
    God made me a man in heels.
    God made me a deadbeat on welfare.
    God made me a drug head.
    God made me attracted to children.
    God made me a wifebeater.

    Illogical.

  2. Reality

    Luther, Calvin, Joe Smith, Henry VIII, Wesley, Roger Williams, the Great “Babs” et al, founders of Christian-based religions or combination religions also suffered from the belief in/hallucinations of "pretty wingie thingie" visits and "prophecies" for profits analogous to the myths of Catholicism (resurrections, apparitions, ascensions and immacu-late co-nceptions).

    Current problems:
    Adulterous preachers, pedophiliac clerics, "propheteering/ profiteering" evangelicals and atonement theology,

    @sam stone

    Bigotry would be, if I would discriminate gays, which I encounter outside the church. I can assure you that I treat gays very kindly, because that is an expression of the gospel without words.

    The only thing, which is not acceptable, is that they go to Church. The Church is the place, where people gather, which are reconciled with God. A reconciled man will not be gay, but live in abstinence or in regular marriage.

    • Rainer Braendlein

      @Who invited me?

      You misinterprete the Bible. Judging would mean, if I would discriminate gays outside the church like gay workmates, neighbours, etc.. I don't handicap gay people, but treat them kindly without bias.

      It is only that they cannot be allowed to come to church, as long as they don't accept the redemption in Christ.

      July 10, 2012 at 4:05 pm |
    • Who invited me?

      Rainer
      You misinterpret the bible, and so does everyone who reads it. That is why there are over 38,000 religions based on "the true word of God"
      Put your rediculous bible down and join the 21st century. It is nothing but a book of stories and myths. If it were the "word of God", it would be far more clear to those who read and believe, but since it is the work of ignorant, superst i tious, control hungry people it will confuse you.

  6. Rainer Braendlein

    @Janet said:

    "We have learned from modern science that people do not choose to be gay or straight; hence it is neither logical nor moral to condemn those whose nature it is to be gay or lesbian."

    To some extent you are right, Janet. Indeed, there is an evil germ within us, which makes us sinning. Some people may become gay through this evil germ. Science confirms the biblical doctrine: We are sinners by nature, we have no choice, we are forced to sin by our sinful body. We have biologically inherited the sinful nature of Adam.

    Yet, this is only valid as long as we don't know of Jesus Christ, who can give us the Holy Spirit, who is stronger than our sinful body, and by whom we can overcome our sin.

    The one who believes in the gospel and gets baptized has died for the sin and entered Christ. In Christ we overcome our sinfulness. Christ is our new nature, which displaces our sinful nature step by step.

      become gay through this evil germ
      ---–
      Nowhere close to the truth. If people "become gay", it's because that's how God designed them to be. Kind of like God designed you to function with a lower than average intellect.

      July 10, 2012 at 3:48 pm |
    • Rainer Braendlein

      @Madtown

      You err. God did not create us with a evil germ, but perfect. It is only that Adam forsake God, who is the Source of Life, and had to degenerate consequently. We are descendants of the degenerated Adam.

    @HeavenSent,

    "myweightinwords, cough, Tommie Tom. "

    Okay, that's a first. If you notice, my "username" is a hyperlink. It goes to my blog, which is in turn linked to my facebook, my flickr and my twitter. You will see I am my own person. I have no need to pretend to be anyone else. Nor can anyone else easily pretend to be me.

    Also, as a side note, I believe Tom is an atheist. I am not. And our writing styles are very, very different.

    "Everyone born of woman is God's children. Even the tares if they repent, ask Jesus for forgiveness, then sin no more will be loved by Him."

    You did not say God's children, you said Jesus' sheep, which would imply those that follow him. Thus my response remains true. I have no need to lead his sheep astray. I have my hands full with my own spiritual journey and helping those who want my help.

    As to the rest, I have heard it all before, you know? I've even believed it before. Been there, done that...it didn't work for me.

    • myweightinwords

      @HeavenSent,

      "How do you think you are helping marrying same s4xed partners?

      Two Pagan men are in love and desire to be married in a ceremony that honors their faith. I am licensed to perform legal marriages in the state of California and I am Pagan as well. It seems a pretty simple thing, doesn't it? Now, granted it was only legal for a short time, but it will be again, of that I am certain.

      They had a need that I could fill, thus I helped make them a legally bound couple. They now have two beautiful children through surrogates and are a wonderful family.

      As for you spiritual journey? What might that be? Obviously, it's not Jesus' truth.

      Each of us is on our own journey, HS. We don't all travel the same roads, and we definitely don't all have the same destination. My journey has been a long one, and it started out on a Christian path, but has diverged significantly. I am an eclectic shamanic Pagan, with leanings toward Celtic Reconstructionism and Native American Shamanism (specifically that of my ancestors, the Iroquois), if you need a label to hang on it.

    I have a simple question for anyone who thinks that the bible is moral:
    When you beat your slaves, do you beat them so that they are almost dead? Because that is in accordance with the teachings of the bible, or do you beat your slaves to death (not allowed)?

      Why not pose that question to the s3x traders that enslave folks today. Then come back and tell us who you'd rather have oversee your well being. A gay man is simply a man who has totally lost the control of his body.

    Why did he lose control?

    He did not trust in the Lord God, who could give him a nice wife in due curse.

    Is there no more hope for gays?

    There is still hope, if they realize God's love by the gospel: God delivered his precious Son for the my sins, the sins of every gay, and the sins of the whole world. This should convince us of God's love and that he is trustworthy and good.

    If we have returned to the loving God again, we will trust him that he takes care of us in all areas of life, even se-xuality, and we don't need to take a same-se-x partner. God will give us a wife timely.

    This is the real faith.

      A gay man is a man who is attracted to other men. Period. Stop.

      Now, some gay men may not be in control. Just like a number (if not many) straight men.

      Being gay is natural, normal and is not a statement on an individual's control of their body.

      July 10, 2012 at 3:40 pm |

      Madtown, God is not doing anything to man. Man conducts sin on his own for not trusting and abiding in Jesus' truth. In layman's terms, you own your own bad behavior.

      July 10, 2012 at 3:52 pm |

      myweightinwords, lusting after the flesh is not normal, it's a sin. Anyone that lusts after the flesh is blinded by that sin ... no matter what their s3xual preference is. It's sin. Sin is violating Jesus' Holy truth. Sinners need to read the Bible for the rest of their lives to understand God and what He wants from us. Not this coping out by listening to man.

      @HeavenSent,

      myweightinwords, lusting after the flesh is not normal, it's a sin.

      Everyone lusts. It is absolutely and completely normal. It may also be a sin, if your personal belief dictates that it is. Mine does not. Acting out on that lust in an immoral manner, is not good, but I imagine our definitions of immoral vary greatly also.

      "Anyone that lusts after the flesh is blinded by that sin ... no matter what their s3xual preference is. It's sin. Sin is violating Jesus' Holy truth."

      That is one definition. I have heard several others. None of which apply to those who do not believe in Jesus.

      "Sinners need to read the Bible for the rest of their lives to understand God and what He wants from us. Not this coping out by listening to man."

      Having spent many years studying the bible and believing I was a worthless sinner, I can honestly say that I do not in anyway believe any of it. There is no honor or love in a being that would demand blood sacrifice for simple disbelief.

      July 10, 2012 at 4:29 pm |
  12. Matthew

    Homosexuality is not a sin according to the Bible. Any educated Christian would know that. Scholars who have studied the Bible in context of the times and in relation to other passages have shown those passages (Leviticus, Corinthians, Romans, etc) have nothing to do with homosexuality. These passages often cherry-picked while ignoring the rest of the Bible. The sins theses passages are referring to are idolatry, prostitution, and rape, not homosexuality. That’s why Jesus never mentions it as well. There is nothing immoral, wrong, or sinful about being gay. Jesus, however, clearly states he HATES hypocrites. If you preach goodness, then promote hate and twist the words of the Bible, you are a hypocrite, and will be judged and sent to hell. Homosexuals will not go to hell, hypocrites will. This is very similar to the religious bigots of the past, where they took Bible passages to condone slavery, keep women down, and used Bible passages to claim blacks as curses who should be enslaved by the white man. People used God to claim that blacks marrying whites was unnatural, and not of God's will.

  13. James

    "All evil heretics, which support and promote the blessing of same-se-x couples, have to be excluded from the Christian Church"

    The scriptures actually say nothing about homosexuality as a psychosexual orientation. Our understandings of sexual orientation are distinctly modern ones that were not present in the minds of Scripture writers. A few passages of Scripture (seven at the most) object to certain types of same-sex expressions or acts. The particular acts in question, however, are sexual expressions which are exploitative, oppressive, commercialized, or offensive to ancient purity rituals. There is no Scriptural guidance for same-sex relationships which are loving and mutually respecting. Guidelines for these relationships should come from the same general Scriptural norms that apply to heterosexual relationships.

    "The evil leaders of the Episcopal Church, which support gayness, must get fired."

    The Biblical condemnation of homosexuality is based on human ignorance, suspicion of those who are different, and an overwhelming concern for ensuring the survival of the people. Since the Bible regards homosexuality as a capital crime, it clearly assumes that homosexuality is a matter of free choice, a deliberate rebellion against God. We have learned from modern science that people do not choose to be gay or straight; hence it is neither logical nor moral to condemn those whose nature it is to be gay or lesbian.

    The evil leaders of the Episcopal Church, which support gayness, must get fired.

    We urgently need a free international council of the Christian Churches about the issue of blessing same-se-x relationships.

    If that council would be staged in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, I could predict the decision of the council:

    All evil heretics, which support and promote the blessing of same-se-x couples, have to be excluded from the Christian Church: Anathema.

    The Episcopal Church immediately needs a new leadership. The current bishops of the Episcopal Church should be given the boots, and be replaced by pious bishops, which really live as Christians in daily life by the power of Jesus' call, which is the sacramental baptism.

    • YeahRight

      "We urgently need a free international council of the Christian Churches about the issue of blessing same-se-x relationships."

      You're the one that needs to be fired since your prejudice and bigotry isn't based on any real facts of today. Heterosexual behavior and homosexual behavior are normal aspects of human sexuality. Despite the persistence of stereotypes that portray lesbian, gay, and bisexual people as disturbed, several decades of research and clinical experience have led all mainstream medical and mental health organizations in this country to conclude that these orientations represent normal forms of human experience. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the American School Counselor Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the National Association of SocialWorkers, together representing more than 480,000 mental health professionals, have all taken the position that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and thus is not something that needs to or can be “cured."

      Social science has shown that the concerns often raised about children of lesbian and gay parents—concerns that are generally grounded in prejudice against and stereotypes about gay people—are unfounded. Overall, the research indicates that the children of lesbian and gay parents do not differ from the children of heterosexual parents in their development, adjustment, or overall well-being.

    marriage is a legal device, not a religious one.

    get married in a church with church approval but without a gov't issued marriage license = not legally married
    get married in a courthouse without church approval but with a gov't issued marriage license = legally married

    you can add ritual and ceremony to a marriage, but it's not necessary. marriage is a legally binding contract between two people.
