Chick-fil-A's marriage stance causing a social storm

(CNN)–The fact that Chick-fil-A is a company that espouses Christian values is no secret. The fact that its 1,600 fast-food chicken restaurants across the country are closed on Sundays has long been testament to that.

But the comments of company President Dan Cathy about gay marriage to Baptist Press on Monday have ignited a social media wildfire.

10 religious companies (besides Chick-fil-A)

"Guilty as charged,", Cathy said when asked about his company's support of the traditional family unit as opposed to gay marriage.

Chick-fil-A controversy shines light on restaurant's Christian DNA

"We are very much supportive of the family – the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that," Cathy is quoted as saying.

    Is there not really one single Christian out there who opposes gay marriage that can point to why it is a bad thing without using a book that also calls shrimp, menstruating women, and rape victims similarly bad things?

      Ummm, no? How much more rhetorical could you be?

      What continues to amaze me is just how much "Christians" (particularly evangelical Protestants) cleave to Leviticus, when one would think that as followers of Christ, the Gospels are all they need.

      Jesus of course has nothing to say on the matter of gays, except for all that inclusive love and forgiveness for everyone stuff. Jesus reserves his harshest words for adultery, and that's just fine in the evangelical Protestant community. Second, third marriage – not problem – so long as it's between a man and woman.

      Sure, read the OT for a bit of background on Judaism, but I thought it was the new covenant they were so keen on.

      Instead of using those scriptures to say to themselves "I will follow this law and not lie with men" (all while ignoring some of the other onerous laws) many Christians wrongfully use it as a tool to say "You should follow this law and not lie with men!" That is why they cannot say how being gay harms anyone else because the only harm they know is that of eternal damnation which requires a belief in an eternal soul and the God of the Hebrews to consider it harmful.

      So really what they are saying when they attempt to legislate gay marriage is "I want to make not believing in my God illegal, you should all now be Christian because I know better than you."

    Excuse me for butting in to this heated discussion, but I have just read the bible page to page, again (!) & there is not 1 verse that states conclusively that God has Sanctioned marriage to be between Only 1 man & 1 woman! Infact, all the verses state quite the opposite! Sure, many verses say man should marry 1 woman, leave his parents, cling to her & so forth! That would be 1 woman at a Time, that is! Everything I have read says that a man can marry as many wives as he can afford & can have cocubines, too! That sweeps the OT & NT! In the NT the only people admonished by the diciples to have Only 1 wife, are pastors & elders in the church! The sooner Christians recognize this fact, the sooner we can have an honest convo about marriage equality! Hey, this wont be popular, but it is biblical fact! Written in ink all over the book & if you believe it to be God's word, time to familiarize yourself again!!

    I DO NOT CARE who "supports" traditional marriage, you are welcome to support it all you like. The issue has never been about who supports traditional marriage. The issues are the attacks on the non-traditional marriages that have NOTHING to fvcking do with anyone else but the persons involved. Go have all the traditional marriages you want, just don't try to legislate someone elses morality, happiness or relationships. Period.

The effort to deprives one demographic the right to marry (or even practice their lifestyle) is given the happy-happy name of "protecting the family". There's many more, but you get the idea.

The effort to deprives one demographic the right to be alive(a pretty basic right) and is given the happy-happy name of "protecting the choice of the mother".       I think you are misinterpreting the notion of morality.

      Morality is a consensus of conscience. It exists outside of religion and is not dictated by religious groups. There are issues like abortion where a very clear consensus of our society's moral opinion is much less obvious as stealing or murder* for example.

      * For the sake of this conversation let's define murder as the killing of post-live birth people.

      Legislating a religious tenet which is not necessarily consistent with the morals of the overall community, is a problem. Actually it is morally wrong.

      A government has no business trying to decide whats "right & wrong" in a society, they do have the business deciding whats legal and illegal. Is going 90 miles per hour right or wrong? Is walking around naked in public right or wrong? Is buying or selling alcohol right or wrong? The answer to all of those questions is "neither!" they are not right or wrong, good or bad. Now some are legal and some illegal, but that has nothing to do with right & wrong. Law's making something illegal are most often based on whether the activity would be depriving another citizen of their freedom, speed limits imposed so you don't take someones freedom to live in relative safety from high speed out of control vehicles, public nudity is banned because it deprives others the freedom to walk in public without being distracted or disgusted.

      So Chad, it comes down to this, support traditional marriage all you want. Say how wonderful it is and great for you and your family, that's fine. But when you cross the line and start attacking others denying them the same rights you enjoy all because they have a different s.e.xual preference than you, then you are the bigot who is not supporting traditional marriage but shamefully attacking another persons rights which makes you the undesirable that should get up and fvcking move to some less tolerant nation like Iran.

I know Harry Hippo brought it up but you are now combining the two as some equal affront to humanity and you have yet to point out one way in which being gay is harmful, you just keep going back to "How is killing a baby not harmful" argument. This means you are either stupid or a liar or both. My guess is both.
      Second, my original point was not to say support for traditional marriage is wrong, I was saying that attacks on non-traditional marriage is prejudiced and bigoted and offensive to other Americans who have as much right to practice their own marriages as you do. So just admit that you like being a bigot and you don't care about people who don't believe in the same God as you do and you would prefer to attack non-traditional marriage.       Personally, I think that the Declaration of Independence is one of the most amazing docs in history. You are free to think otherwise of course.

      I do agree with you on one thing, "separation between Church & State" does indeed refer to preventing the state from establishing a state religion (it was never intended to keep an acknowledgement of the God of Abraham out of our government).

    This saddens me. Not because of what this business is doing. It saddens me because Christians are known more for what they are against, instead of what they are for. I believe this is Christian problem, as opposed to a perception problem of those not of the faith.

    Christians should be known for the loving things that Jesus taught. Peace, love, kindness, gentleness, meekness of spirit, service, and humility. Instead Christians are known for their dismissal of others and hatred of those who do not believe the same way they do.

    So to this community, for those who view Christians in this light, I apologize for actions and statements that made you feel this way.

      Though you may be right to a certain extent, you have to admit that a few of the reasons why Christians are looked at the wrong way (besides the ones that give a bad example of Christianity) is because of the media itself. Take Kirk Cameron for instance. He went on the Piers Morgan show to promote his new doc u mentary and what did Piers so kindly do? He backed him into a corner asking him about his gay marriage position. You mean to tell me Piers did not know what Kirk's Christian stance would be??? And the same goes on with many others. Remember the beauty pageant contestant Ms. Carrie Prejean and the "honest" question she was asked about gay marriage. She gave an honest reply and look what happened. Anyway, there's no end to this issue so no sense in empty arguing.

      Damian, while I agree with you Christians are just humans and what you, me, or Rev Terry Jones believes Christians should be like or do, is not agreed on by all Christians. All of us will read the Holy text and will get varying views of what God's path for us is. For every so many ant-LGBT articles there are stories of openly Gay and Lesbian clergy and church leaders. So even on this small issue there are Gay and Lesbians within the Christian Community.

      No one is telling Chick-Fil-A to make their opinions known. They offered it to the public. They made the statement. They take the stand that they will be closed on Sundays. And, that is their choice.

      To be fair and honest, any business I encounter who espouses hate or pushes it's religious views (no matter what those views are, even if they agree with mine) is not a business I will support with my dollars (with the exception of a store that is specifically in business to support a particular faith, such as a religious supply store or bookstore).
