Chick-fil-A's marriage stance causing a social storm

By Brad Lendon, CNN

(CNN)–The fact that Chick-fil-A is a company that espouses Christian values is no secret. The fact that its 1,600 fast-food chicken restaurants across the country are closed on Sundays has long been testament to that.

But the comments of company President Dan Cathy about gay marriage to Baptist Press on Monday have ignited a social media wildfire.

10 religious companies (besides Chick-fil-A)

"Guilty as charged,", Cathy said when asked about his company's support of the traditional family unit as opposed to gay marriage.

Chick-fil-A controversy shines light on restaurant's Christian DNA

"We are very much supportive of the family – the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that," Cathy is quoted as saying.

they are free to come out on a social issue. they are free to be on the side of hate and ignorance. and consumers are free to take their dollar elsewhere. don't agree with chick-fil-a? don't eat there. tell them with your money, they only language they'll understand, that you don't support their religious ignorance.

you're an idiot. go find your frontal lobe. 10% of the population is g.ay - that's a lot. and it's not just g.ay money. i'm straight against hate. i won't eat there either. so they lose more than just g.ay money.

yep, they can let a bronze/iron age book guide their ethics while the modern world advances. agreed.
if you see g.ays kiss, you feel the need to say something? just makes you look ignorant and hatefilled.

@ booty ,if the purpose of making it a gay hangout is to make people feel uncomfortable, then the tables could be turned. Why do gay people feel like they have to parade it around town?.smoke kush,ps. Bible makes a good rolling table

Gay marriage supporters are taking the entirely wrong stance.... don't boycott Chick-fil-A, apply for jobs and go there with your partner, make it the new married gay couples hang-out. Kiss your boyfriend in line, hold hands. Let the bigots feel uncomfortable and legally there isn't a darn thing they can do about it.

  3. WhatToSay

Unfortunately, chick fil A is free to hold their beliefs, and by making it public will get high fives from a hoard of Americans. The popularity of an idea doesn't make it right. Some will say, well God said so. No, Moses said so and those 600 or so laws wre intended for the Jews to keep them a whole people. And the ten commandments inludes a prohibition on adultery - which MANY Americans r guilty. This includes adultery of all types, agreed. But we till have our free wills. Even if he bible frowns on certain behaviors,, the fact is we live in a free country, where you can hold your beliefs without fear of government persecution. However we aren't free to discriminate in hiring practice or commit hate comes, want violate someone's civil rights. And being Christian or Muslim isn't a requirement in life. You can choose to do whtvevr u wn within the law. Some religious people expcet that all have to conform. But he bible doesnt say that. It only says to announce the Gospel, and leave it up to the person to decide. It also says that not all will have eternal life, so if here is eternal life, just accept that not all will get it. And that includes many so called Christians. And unfortunately, love the sinner hate the sin isn't follwed in practice. What happens is that many hate the person as well. So they become no better than the supposed sin they hate. so just leave people to be themselves, whether born that way or not. Stand for your beliefs because it your freedom to do so but don't expect all to agree. And certainly don't attempt to persecute them because they don't.. And we have separation of church and state, which means you can't make laws supporting one particular religion or set of religions. What's moral is diffemt and determined by belief. Some moral things should be made laws, but not based on religion. And they can't violate basic freedoms.

Dum.bas.s they never said they wouldnt hire pillowbitters they just said they didnt think it was a healthy life style. They have the freedom of their opinion and you have your opinion. No one is wrong both are right! There is no right there is no wrong. Who are you to make some moral judgement against either side, God? You wish!! He doesnt exist therefore there is no good or evil just your opinion!

If Jesus walked into Chick-fil-A corporate headquarters, don't you think he might have this to say?

“I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

You go, Chick-fil-A! Straight to hell, according to Jesus' instructions.

Now we just need businesses to stand up to the true ideal and hire only whites. God did not intend for his created races to mix. He intended for the various kingdoms to remain separate. The more we mix, the further we are from Him.

    Jude 1 >>
    New International Version 1984
7In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to se.xu.al im.mor.ality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.
8In the very same way, these dreamers pollute their own bodies, reject authority and slander celestial beings. 9But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” 10Yet these men speak abusively against whatever they do not understand; and what things they do understand by instinct, like unreasoning animals—these are the very things that destroy them.
11Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam’s error; they have been destroyed in Korah’s rebellion.
12These men are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm—shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted—twice dead. 13They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever.

Behold, the Osiris Ani, the scribe of the holy offerings of all the gods, saith: Homage to thee, O thou who hast come as Khepera, Khepera the creator of the gods, Thou art seated on thy throne, thou risest up in the sky, illumining thy mother [Nut], thou art seated on thy throne as the king of the gods. [Thy] mother Nut stretcheth out her hands, and performeth an act of homage to thee. The domain of Manu receiveth thee with satisfaction.

Companies like this who spread hate should not be allowed to exist. If they continue their intolerant and offensive rhetoric, they should be fined and eventually put out of business. There is no place for this bigotry in a free society.

This company is not spreading hate. The owner is stating an opinion and he has the courage to do it at the expense of the success of his business.

Opposition to gay marriage is NOT hate. Every time gay marriage has gone to the voters, it has lost. The owner is in line with the majority of Americans.
It sounds like you are for censorship. The US is not for you. There are countries, such as Islamic countries, that do enforce censorship. Perhaos you should move there.

Opposition to gay marriage is based on a scriptural belief that deems gays evil for following their nature. Opposition to mixed marriage is based on the belief that other races were too inferior to mix with whites. Why is one "hateful" and the other not?

I have had the opportunity to work with private companies, who's owners were evangelical christians. In my observation, everyone was expected whether it was through slightly overt, or even inferred verbal direction or actions that everyone needed to do what they said about the bible, jesus, etc...

I literally interviewed the employees. Fact is... they didn't like it, at all. Management tended towards abusiveness, more so, (in general) than non-christian companies.

Bottom-line they were awful to deal with in general, and had to turn attorney's on them 'always' to get them to pay. Never had a problem with secular companies in paying.

    Peace...

  9. tomorrow is not promised

I have watched and read this blog all day with discust... My mouth is now overflowing from my heart...those of you that are believers will know what that means others it really won't matter..We all are sinners...everyone of us living and breathing are sinners..and none of our sins are any greater than the others...The only difference is I am a child of God and when I sin all I have to do is ask him for forgiveness and i am forgiven..I have watched in discuss all the post put on this blog today and it hurts me to know there are people out there that don't believe there is a God...this is all because of something a fast food restaurant decided to say. Why was this such a surprise everyone knows chick fil a is closed on Sundays because of their strong religious beliefs...so why be surprised when they stand up against sin..At least they are standing for something..maybe they need to run for president at least we will have a strong stance on something..Miracles happen everyday..those are evidence that my God does exist...for you to be breathing and living is proof he exist..The sky will open one day and we all will see his face.. I just pray that you have made your choice. Christians are not perfect and should not claim to be...we are sinners just like everyone else...the only difference is we are children of God and he has told us if we ask for forgiveness we are forgiven..Jesus hung on the cross and died for you and me..all he ask is that we except him into our hearts...My God tells me to LOVE the sinner and HATE the sin.. and that is what I strive to do and what all Christians should strive to do..It does none of us any good to get in here and be blasphimist..in fact you should be very careful you are not promised tomorrow or your next breath...I am going to say a prayer for everyone that posted to this blog today that they will have peace and a change of heart and learn that we are all on the same path we all are going to die one day and will have to answer for our sins... I hope some of you will have a change of heart because I truly believe in the power of prayer I would hate for any of you to be the one asking for just one drop of water because it is so HOT in hell....Please ask for forgiveness and ask Jesus into your heart and the struggles in this life will be much easier to carry...because you will never be alone.. The Lord my God will always be with you...Peace and forgiveness to all... Remember we are not promised tommorow make a choice today..

Some of the many problems with this post:
-"My mouth is now overflowing from my heart" – Physiologically difficult.
-"We all are sinners...everyone of us living and breathing are sinners..and none of our sins are any greater than the others" – No, we aren't. Not all of us believe in your "sin".
-"when I sin all I have to do is ask him for forgiveness and i am forgiven" – No, you aren't. There is no evidence that anyone hears what you're asking, much less absolves you of responsibility for what you've done.
-"Miracles happen everyday..those are evidence that my God does exist" – No, they don't. "Miracles" don't happen at all. Life happens every day.
-"for you to be breathing and living is proof he exist" – No; however, it is proof that I exist. God doesn't like offering any evidence of his existence. Weird, huh?
-"The sky will open one day and we all will see his face" – Ummm...highly unlikely, and sort of a scary delusion.
-"we are children of God and he has told us if we ask for forgiveness we are forgiven" – There is no evidence of God's existence, nor is there evidence that the Bible is anything other than a book of fairy tales that was written over hundred of years by a vast assortment of different people with a lot of different motivations.
-"My God tells me to LOVE the sinner and HATE the sin" – No, your preacher tells you that. God doesn't tell you anything because he doesn't exist. If you hear voices in your head that you're attributing to god then I suggest you seek professional help.
-"in fact you should be very careful you are not promised tomorrow or your next breath" – That's funny..it seems that your god is sending you to threaten me? Doesn't seem very loving of him.
-"I would hate for any of you to be the one asking for just one drop of water because it is so HOT in hell" – Again with the threats. Man, for being such a loving chap this guy god sure does come up with some elaborate tortures.
-"The Lord my God will always be with you" – Again, I think we have to go over the concept of existence. You just don't seem to get it.

Do you obey all of the laws in the Bible, or do you do as most Christians do, cherry-pick only the ones you like? The ban against gay relations is only one of hundreds, yet Christians get divorced, keep their possessions, and a host of other things that Jesus himself argued against while never mentioning a thing about gays. Funny how this doesn't seem to bother most of you?

      rob
I'll never understand why Rethuglican, conservative, right-wing, religious fanatics think they can force other normal people to accept their deviant views and lifestyle. They love to tell other people how to live their lives, while their own lives are in shambles. The Christian (esp. Catholic, Mormon, Evangelical, and Southern Baptist) Taliban in this country are going to face a violent wake up call soon if they keep trying to spread their hatred, intolerant views, and intolerant actions on normal Americans. And it is patently unfair that gays and their loved ones should be devastated by discriminatory actions, while the bigots and their families go about enjoying their lives as if nothing is wrong. It's time to start making bigots pay for the discriminatory actions they take. When they have to pay a price, they might start to rethink their actions. I would urge anyone reading this to take WHATEVER ACTIONS POSSIBLE to harm Chick-Fil-A personnel or property, Dan Cathy, other members of the Cathy family, or their loved ones, to make them pay for the harm they are doing to the people they discriminate against.

"The joy of the Godly family unit will never be replaced with the sin and abomination of perversion."

Some argue that since homosexual behavior is "unnatural" it is contrary to the order of creation. Behind this pronouncement are stereotypical definitions of masculinity and femininity that reflect rigid gender categories of patriarchal society. There is nothing unnatural about any shared love, even between two of the same gender, if that experience calls both partners to a fuller state of being. Contemporary research is uncovering new facts that are producing a rising conviction that homosexuality, far from being a sickness, sin, perversion or unnatural act, is a healthy, natural and affirming form of human sexuality for some people. Findings indicate that homosexuality is a given fact in the nature of a significant portion of people, and that it is unchangeable.

Our prejudice rejects people or things outside our understanding. But the God of creation speaks and declares, "I have looked out on everything I have made and `behold it (is) very good'." . The word (Genesis 1:31) of God in Christ says that we are loved, valued, redeemed, and counted as precious no matter how we might be valued by a prejudiced world.

There are few biblical references to homosexuality. The first, the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, is often quoted to prove that the Bible condemns homosexuality. But the real sin of Sodom was the unwillingness of the city's men to observe the laws of hospitality. The intention was to insult the stranger by forcing him to take the female role in the sex act. The biblical narrative approves Lot's offer of his virgin daughters to satisfy the sexual demands of the mob. How many would say, "This is the word of the Lord"? When the Bible is quoted literally, it might be well for the one quoting to read the text in its entirety.

Leviticus, in the Hebrew Scriptures, condemns homosexual behaviour, at least for males. Yet, "abomination", the word Leviticus uses to describe homosexuality, is the same word used to describe a menstruating woman. Paul is the most quoted source in the battle to condemn homosexuality ( 1 Corinthians 6: 9-11 and Romans 1: 26-27). But homosexual activity was regarded by Paul as a punishment visited upon idolaters by God because of their unfaithfulness. Homosexuality was not the sin but the punishment.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11, Paul gave a list of those who would not inherit the Kingdom of God. That list included the immoral, idolaters, adulterers, sexual perverts, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, and robbers. Sexual perverts is a translation of two words; it is possible that the juxtaposition of malakos, the soft, effeminate word, with arsenokoitus, or male prostitute, was meant to refer to the passive and active males in a homosexual liaison.

Thus, it appears that Paul would not approve of homosexual behavior. But was Paul's opinion about homosexuality accurate, or was it limited by the lack of scientific knowledge in his day and infected by prejudice born of ignorance? An examination of some of Paul's other assumptions and conclusions will help answer this question. Who today would share Paul's anti-Semitic attitude, his belief that the authority of the state was not to be challenged, or that all women ought to be veiled? In these attitudes Paul's thinking has been challenged and transcended even by the church! Is Paul's commentary on homosexuality more absolute than some of his other antiquated, culturally conditioned ideas?

Three other references in the New Testament (in Timothy, Jude and 2 Peter) appear to be limited to condemnation of male sex slaves in the first instance, and to showing examples (Sodom and Gomorrah) of God's destruction of unbelievers and heretics (in Jude and 2 Peter respectively).

That is all that Scripture has to say about homosexuality. Even if one is a biblical literalist, these references do not build an ironclad case for condemnation. If one is not a biblical literalist there is no case at all, nothing but prejudice born of ignorance, that attacks people whose only crime is to be born with an unchangeable sexual predisposition toward those of their own sex.

John, you post the same posts so many places. It must really matter to you that what you want to say gets across to the readers.
But , will your explanations of the Word of God stand the trying by fire, when the intents of your heart are revealed?
God tell s us that His thoughts are not our thoughts, and His ways not our ways. If this is so, then we best don't interpret Him according to our own ways, and likings, trying to fit His ways in our agendas.
How will you fare when you stand before God? Then man's opinions wont's matter. It is only you before holy God. Nothing else will matter!

There is no verified evidence that any god "spoke" to any Jews in the Israeli desert - ever. There is no verified evidence that Jesus was any son of that fantasy god.

As far as supernatural beings existing (let alone their wants and needs and demands), "Scripture" is nothing.

A common occurrence for people regularly frequenting Chick-fil-A...

      July 19, 2012 at 8:41 pm |
  15. Reality

I will continue to patronize Chick-fil-A but the president of company needs to read the following as apparently he suffers from the Three B syndrome, Bred, Born and Brainwashed in his religion and this case Christianity:

o "Abrahamics" believe that their god created all of us and of course that includes the g-ay members of the human race. Also, those who have studied ho-mo-se-xuality have determined that there is no choice involved therefore ga-ys are ga-y because god made them that way.

    To wit:

    1. The Royal College of Psy-chiatrists stated in 2007:

“ Despite almost a century of psy-choanalytic and psy-chological speculation, there is no substantive evidence to support the suggestion that the nature of parenting or early childhood experiences play any role in the formation of a person’s fundamental heteros-exual or hom-ose-xual orientation. It would appear that s-exual orientation is biological in nature, determined by a complex interplay of ge-netic factors and the early ut-erine environment. Se-xual orientation is therefore not a choice.[60] "

    2. "Garcia-Falgueras and Swaab state in the abstract of their 2010 study, "The fe-tal brain develops during the intraut-erine period in the male direction through a direct action of tes-tosterone on the developing nerve cells, or in the female direction through the absence of this hor-mone surge. In this way, our gender identi-ty (the conviction of belonging to the male or female gender) and s-exual orientation are programmed or organized into our brain structures when we are still in the womb. There is no indication that social environment after birth has an effect on gender ident–ity or s-exual orientation."[8

    3. See also the Philadelphia Inquirer review “Gay Gene, Deconstructed”, 12/12/2011. Said review addresses the following “How do genes associated with ho-mose-xuality avoid being weeded out by Darwinian evolution?”

Of course, those gays who belong to Abrahamic religions supposedly abide by the rules of no adu-ltery or for-nication allowed.

And because of basic biology differences said monogamous ventures should always be called same-se-x unions not same-se-x marriages.

    To wit:

From below, on top, backwards, forwards, from this side of the Moon and from the other side too, ga-y s-exual activity is still mutual mas-turbation caused by one or more complex s-exual differences. Some differences are visually obvious in for example the complex maleness of DeGeneres, Billy Jean King and Rosie O'Donnell.

Yes, heteros-exuals practice many of the same "moves" but there is never a doubt who is the female and who is the male.

As noted, there are basic biological differences in gay unions vs. heterose-xual marriage. Government benefits are the same in both but making the distinction is important for census data and for social responses with respect to potential issues with disease, divorce and family interactions.

Note: Some words hyphenated to defeat an obvious word filter. ...

The Brutal Effects of Stupidity on the part of both heterose-xuals and h-omose-uals as fits the case:

: The failures of the widely used birth "control" methods i.e. the Pill (8.7% actual failure rate) and male con-dom (17.4% actual failure rate) have led to the large rate of abortions and S-TDs in the USA. Men and women must either recognize their responsibilities by using the Pill or co-ndoms properly and/or use safer methods in order to reduce the epidemics of abortion and S-TDs.- Failure rate statistics provided by the Gut-tmacher Inst-itute. Unfortunately they do not give the statistics for doubling up i.e. using a combination of the Pill and a condom.

Added information before making your next move:

      from the CDC-2006

"Se-xually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain a major public health challenge in the United States. While substantial progress has been made in preventing, diagnosing, and treating certain S-TDs in recent years, CDC estimates that approximately 19 million new infections occur each year, almost half of them among young people ages 15 to 24.1 In addition to the physical and psy-ch-ological consequences of S-TDs, these diseases also exact a tremendous economic toll. Direct medical costs as-sociated with STDs in the United States are estimated at up to $14.7 billion annually in 2006 dollars."

      And from:

      Consumer Reports, January, 2012

"Yes, or-al se-x is se-x, and it can boost cancer risk-

Here's a crucial message for teens (and all se-xually active "post-teeners": Or-al se-x carries many of the same risks as va-ginal se-x, including human papilloma virus, or HPV. And HPV may now be overtaking tobacco as the leading cause of or-al cancers in America in people under age 50.

"Adolescents don’t think or-al se-x is something to worry about," said Bonnie Halpern-Felsher professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco. "They view it as a way to have intimacy without having 's-ex.'" (It should be called the Bill Clinton Syndrome !!)

Obviously, political leaders in both parties, Planned Parenthood, parents, the "stupid part of the USA" and the educational system have failed miserably on many fronts.

Prayer does not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!

Having grown up in a “Godly family unit” I can assure you that it sucked big time. It was the most miserable time of my life and leaving was the best decision I ever made in my life.
I don’t have much experience with sin and abomination; but, my current life and my personal goal of leaving the world a little better for my having been in it, is much happier and more rewarding then anything back when I “had religion”
