Where was God in Aurora massacre?

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Where was God in Aurora?

It’s a fresh take on an age-old question: Why does God allow suffering, natural disasters or - if you believe in it - evil?

We put the question to Twitter on Tuesday and got some starkly different responses.

“In short, God was in complete control, exercising His will,” wrote @PastorRileyF, who leads a church in Bethune, Colorado.

That riled @TheTrivia Jockey, who tweeted, “If that was God's will, God is definitely not deserving of my worship.”

Watch: Survivor of massacre says he forgives gunman

@trentpayne also took issue with the Colorado pastor: "I'm going to respectfully disagree with you Pastor. God gives free will to man, but it wasn't his will that they die."

The back-and-forth provoked other believers to chime in on the theological issue of God’s sovereignty vs. human free will, with many Christians seeking to explain how a sovereign God could preside over seemingly senseless bloodshed.

“It is not God's will or want that people died in Aurora,” wrote @GospelBluesman 20m. "God allowed man's inhumanity to man, rather than intervene.”

The conversation and debate continued in the comments section of this post, with some insinuating that the massacre might be a kind of divine punishment, or at lease divine neglect:

Lenny
We as a country have been telling God to go away. We told him to get off our currency, get out of our schools, get out of our Pledge of Allegiance, take your Ten Commandments out of our courthouses, get those Bibles out of hotels and no graduation ceremonies in our churches. How can we expect God to give us his blessing and his protection if we demand that he leave us alone?

Liberals have made it impossible for God to be anywhere during the upbringing of a child. Can't have any religious connotations in schools, libraries, government offices, etc., etc. Young men (and women) are growing up with no real sense of right and wrong. ... We no longer have the right of religion, but rather the right from religion. Parents no longer have the ability to discipline their children. We are always looking for the excuses ... violent video games and movies, bad teachers and schools ... when we should be looking in the mirror. We as a society are the reasons these massacres happen. We have allowed our children to become social misfits that lead to the kind of carnage we have seen on several occasions since religion and God disappeared from what the Founding Fathers once said was a necessity of a successful democracy ... faith.

Lots of readers used religious takes on the shooting to challenge the whole idea of God:

Who invited me?
How do you know the people that were killed didn't go to hell?, and how exactly does any of this show there is a reason? Reason is obviously something that you have replaced with belief, and you threw out logic with it.

Kyle
"God doesn't exist, so he wasn't anywhere. Get over it. A man was evil, and he was evil because he was crazy.

Plenty of others said the shooting was the devil's work:

Harleyxx
Evil things like this happen because Satan is the god of this world ... for the time being. God will undo all the damage caused by Satan's rebellion and man's disobedience when the time is right. In the meantime we all experience trials and tribulation due to living in an ungodly world. That is why Jesus taught his followers the Lord's Prayer ... 'to pray for God's kingdom to come.'

What’s your take? Where was God in the Aurora massacre? Or do you feel that such tragedies are evidence for a godless universe?

Let us know in comments, and we’ll highlight the best ones.

You cannot create God by fancies of your mind, nor can you do an iota to destroy His existence by fancies of your mind. God's existence is absolute beyond the speculative range of your mind and completely independent of it. Is is laughable when mere mortals whose lifetime on this earthly plane is merely a blip on scale of cosmic time, speculate with their limited mind on that which is Absolute and beyond the reach of their minds. God is attained by surrender of your spirit. You can cover physical distance at speed of light or you can cover speculative distance at speed of mind and still you cannot reach Him. At the same time, by simple surrender of your heart, He is attainable.

God was in the exact same place He was when he also did not step in and stop every single one of us from committing acts short of His purity on the same day as the shooter did. If God were to intervene and eliminate all evil-doers at 11:59, where would any of us be at 12:00?? Where do we want to draw the line? Between us when we lie, commit adultery, steal, gossip, ignore the homeless person in their desperate need, blacken someone else's reputation, say unkind things, act out in hurtful ways just because we are angry and the horrendously evil act of murder which happened in Aurora? We are ALL guilty of sin, and even when we try to be "good" people, we still fail to attain sinlessness. That is exactly why God made the provision for us so that we CAN know Him, through His son, Jesus Christ. Remember, if you want God to step in and stop evil when it happens, we all better look out because He would be coming after every last one of us!! Instead, in His loving kindness, He waits for us to seek Him out and He has already paid the enormous debt for all of our own evil; and don't kid yourself that you or any of us are good people. We are created in His image, with a capacity to commune with the God who made us, BUT we also sin all the time. We don't get to tell God when to step in and when not just because we want Him to do what we would want at our bidding. And lest anyone misinterpret what I am saying, God's heart is breaking with ours at the unspeakable pain caused by this act of evil and all others.

GOD just sits up there and watches, he never intervenes. Your prayers never work, when you think they do you say, "God answered my prayers", and when they don't you say, "It was Gods will". So you always have an excuse for God. I still believe in living by Jesus' teachings because there is absolutely nothing wrong with them, even if he's not real.

Tons of responses, many of them claiming to know the TRUTH. Fact is, no one really knows. My belief is that God give us free will, His greatest gift. We try to make sense of horrible events, natural disasters and huge loss of lives, but in truth we are no more capable of understanding God that a dog can understand a refrigerator. The dog does know that the fridge is a source of goodness, we can understand almost as much about God. But we try.

However, for someone proclaiming to know the truth, you become as sounding brass, as the tinkling of a cymbal. In other words, without charity, you are nothing.

I love the christian superst.ition of hell, because it is so childish.. Think it through. You don’t have to kill, you don’t have to rob, hell, you don’t even have to litter.

All you have to do is have an honest, rational and reasonable disbelief in the Christian god and he will inflict a grotesque punishment upon you an infinite times worse than the death penalty….and he loves you.

yeah, well I guess He plays by His own rules – NOT YOURS

The "God" that you believe in may not be the God that exists (or doesn't), but to keep slamming your head against the wall insisting the "this is His will", or "God wants you to ____(fill in the blank)" DOES NOT make it so.
Maybe you who preach His will should take a good look at yourself; just because you are delivering the Word doesn't make you the author...

What a silly question. Where was God in Aurora massacre? Just because 12 innocent people were killed at one time, you're asking where was God. The same place He is when children die for no good reason, and adults die every day for no good reason. The same place He is when many people die in Syria, and other parts of the world. The same place He was during World War 2 with its countless tragedies, and he many tragedies before that.

A better question is, where are you in relation to God? You and I will die one day also. Might be longer, might be shorter before that happens, but in the grand scheme of things, we live very short lives, even the oldest of us.

First of all, God is not a he or she – God is ENERGY. This energy does not direct us to do good or bad. We don't know why but my theory is this. Zimmerman misused his weapon and took a life and some people out there thought is was a just thing for him to do. So- The Joker 2012 came along and basically did the same thing but on a much larger scale to where it will get people to start taking a real look at guns and who should own them. In America, we often need catastrophic events (911 and this Joker 2012 shooting) to open the eyes of those responsible for making our laws. In less than one year, we have seen 2 irresponsible gun owners take lives of good people minding their own business having a drink of some sort and eating skittles. For the record, God was a ruthless God and this is why today most religious leaders speak from the New Testament.

Few 100% true Reasons why Atheism is TERRIBLE and unhealthy for our children and living things:

† Atheism is a religion that makes you angry, stupid, brainwashed, ignorant & blind.
† Atheism is a disease that needs to be treated.
† Atheism makes you post stupid things (90% of silly comments here on CNN blogs are posted by closet atheists)
† Atheist are satanic and have gothic lifestyle.
† Atheists are misguided and causes problem in our religious & public society.
† Atheists are mentally ill, that's why they have no faith.
† Atheism won't take you to kingdom of heaven and paradise.
† Atheism making you agree with Mussolini, Stalin, Hitler (denied his faith later), Mao, Pol Pot & other terrible mass murder leaders.
† No traditional family lifestyle, no holidays, no culture, boring and feeling 'outsider'
† Atheists are angry, drug additcted and committ the most crime.
† Atheist try to convert people over internet because they feel "safer" behind closet.
† Atheists do not really exist, they just pretend that they don't believe in God and argue with religious people.
† Atheists have had terrible life experience, bad childhood and not being loved.
† Most Atheists are uneducated... No atheists could run for presidency.
† Atheism brought upon the French Revolution, one of the most evil events of all of history.
† Atheism cannot explain the origins of the universe, therefore God exists.
† All atheists believe in evolution, which means they don't believe in morality and think we should all act like animals.
† The Bible says atheism is wrong, and the Bible is always right (see: Genesis 1:1, Psalms 14:1, Psalms 19:1, Romans 1:19-20)
† Countries where Atheism is prevalent has the highest Suicide rate & Communist countries = Atheism!
**Only 2-3% of the U.S. are atheists/agnostics VS. over 90% who believe in God (80% Christians) in the U.S.**

† † Our Prayers goes to atheists to be mentally healthy and seek their creator † †

PS! the USA is a † nation and will always be. You know it's true and stop being ignorant and arrogant!

Typical slobbering religious nut. BTW as far as education and religion: the exact opposite of what you say is true. Uneducated and undereducated people tend to be more religious. A look at any third world country or places like Mississippi or Alabama shows you that the more uneducated the people the more religion dominates the culture.

Not only is this a gross misrepresentation of atheism, it falls victim to multiple false claims and lofallacious reasoning. Here we go!

† Atheism is a religion that makes you angry, stupid, brainwashed, ignorant & blind.
Im happy, graduated with honors, have a good grasp on reality, and have corrected vision.

† Atheism is a disease that needs to be treated.
Ignorance is a disease that can be cured with education. Try it!

† Atheism makes you post stupid things (90% of silly comments here on CNN blogs are posted by closet atheists)
      Apparently, so does Christianity!

† Atheist are satanic and have gothic lifestyle.
You might have a point: http://unrealitymag.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/tumblr_kpomcqr4Ae1qz8ovio1_500.jpg

† Atheists are misguided and causes problem in our religious & public society.
Got a mirror? Look in it!

† Atheism won't take you to kingdom of heaven and paradise.
Actually, I've been to the Bahamas.

† Atheism making you agree with Mussolini, Stalin, Hitler (denied his faith later), Mao, Pol Pot & other terrible mass murder leaders.
Wait, Christianity makes you agree with God that killing people different from you is right. Yikes!
Besides, atheism doesn't imply that. You're pretty ignorant to make such a claim. Are the good and the just loved by God because they are good and just, or does God love what is good and just?

† No traditional family lifestyle, no holidays, no culture, boring and feeling 'outsider'
Im totally happy with my friends and "traditional" family. We totally celebrate Halloween too.

† Atheists are angry, drug additcted and committ the most crime.
Dude, if atheists are addicted to mushrooms, do you think they are angry? And what about those Catholic priest?s Hmm.

† Atheist try to convert people over internet because they feel "safer" behind closet.
I am sooo confused!! Richard Dawkins is always in public places! Do you realize how many false claims you are making??

† Atheists do not really exist, they just pretend that they don't believe in God and argue with religious people.
It's true I am arguing, that is, objecting to your claims. But I am pretty sure I exist, otherwise I wouldn't be here to object. And I am not pretending. That's like saying Im pretending that I dont believe in Santa Claus!

† Atheists have had terrible life experience, bad childhood and not being loved.
Man, you are seriously wearing me out. I had a wonderful, loving, upbringing.

† Most Atheists are uneducated... No atheists could run for presidency.
I BET OBAMA IS AN ATHEIST. I BET YOU.

† Atheism brought upon the French Revolution, one of the most evil events of all of history.
Actually, there were multiple causes, and that's not one of them. It looks like you're the uneducated one.

† Atheism cannot explain the origins of the universe, therefore God exists.
I cannot explain why you are so dumb, therefore, clowns exist.

† All atheists believe in evolution, which means they don't believe in morality and think we should all act like animals.
See above response to your claim that all atheists agree with Stalin, etc.

† The Bible says atheism is wrong, and the Bible is always right (see: Genesis 1:1, Psalms 14:1, Psalms 19:1, Romans 1:19-20)
That's circular reasoning. Wait, do you know what that means?

† Countries where Atheism is prevalent has the highest Suicide rate & Communist countries = Atheism!
Throughout history war has been declared in the name of God and rights have been stripped away from people = Christianity!

**Only 2-3% of the U.S. are atheists/agnostics VS. over 90% who believe in God (80% Christians) in the U.S.**
Popularity Fallacy: All kids believe in Santa Claus, therefore, I should believe in Santa Clause.

Okay, really, did a clown post this? Because I don't think a Christian would be this dumb and silly.

    • wartech0

Really... this is the most ignorant and simple minded thing I have ever seen in my life.
      1. "Atheism is a religion that makes you angry, stupid, brainwashed, ignorant & blind." How many atheist do you know? How often do you talk to them? I think you would find that yes there is SOME atheist that are angry, stupid, brainwashed, ignorant, and blind, but the same can be said for Christian's as well as any other person on the planet. Just because someone acts a certain way doesn't mean that all people act that way. That is called profiling, and its a common technique racist's use.
      2. "Atheism is a disease that needs to be treated." So just because someone disagrees with you they are wrong. Then you stoup even lower by calling them a disease saying they need to be 'treated'. That sounds a lot like hate.
      3. "Atheism makes you post stupid things (90% of silly comments here on CNN blogs are posted by closet atheists)" I don't even know what to say about this one, should I point out the lack of statistical evidence?
      4. "Atheist are satanic and have gothic lifestyle." Being satanic would imply a belief in Christian stories and beliefs I can assure you Atheists don't believe in Satan either.
      5. "Atheists are misguided and causes problem in our religious & public society." Again lack of statistics.
      6. "Atheists are mentally ill, that's why they have no faith." I would say having no faith is more sane then having a lot of it.
      7. "Atheism won't take you to kingdom of heaven and paradise." Other then citing your book (does not count as evidence) how do you know the Christian religion leads you do a kingdom of heaven or paradise? Have you been there?
      8. "Atheism making you agree with Mussolini, Stalin, Hitler (denied his faith later), Mao, Pol Pot & other terrible mass murder leaders." See 1
      9. "No traditional family lifestyle, no holidays, no culture, boring and feeling 'outsider'" I think its funny how you think family lifestyle and holidays have anything to do with a religion. Not all holidays are religious and what does religion have to do with family lifestyle please iterate.
      10. "Atheists are angry, drug additcted and committ the most crime." See 1. I am atheist I have a clean record and I don't do drugs.
      11. "Atheist try to convert people over internet because they feel "safer" behind closet." No I openly have conversations with Christians about their beliefs I also don't care what they believe as long as they don't spread slander and propaganda.
      12. "Atheists do not really exist, they just pretend that they don't believe in God and argue with religious people." I don't even know what to say to this. The statement is just so ignorant I don't need to argue it.
      13. "Atheists have had terrible life experience, bad childhood and not being loved." Pretty sure both of my parents love me very much and I love them too as well as my sister who is also atheist. I feel we had a pretty good childhood.
      14. "Most Atheists are uneducated... No atheists could run for presidency." You assume you must be educated to run for the presidency. Also I am attending college what college did you attend and what course of study? Computer Science major here.
      15. "Atheism brought upon the French Revolution, one of the most evil events of all of history." See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Inquisition. And no the French Revolution was brought upon by a regime that didn't care that its people were starving. This coupled with the bankruptcy of the state from previous wars (one being the American Revolution which helped found this great nation).
      16. "Atheism cannot explain the origins of the universe, therefore God exists." Just because scientist can't explain something does not mean that god exists. This just means we haven't found the answer yet, and if we had it your way we would never find the answer.
      17. "All atheists believe in evolution, which means they don't believe in morality and think we should all act like animals." The theory of evolution is a FACT it cannot be argued. "A scientific theory is "a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment." – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_theory
      18. "The Bible says atheism is wrong, and the Bible is always right (see: Genesis 1:1, Psalms 14:1, Psalms 19:1, Romans 1:19-20)" The Bible doesn't count as EVIDENCE. Even if it did it contradicts itself in many places." Lithuania actually has the highest suicide rate among nations. It's also worth pointing out that "As per the 2001 census, 79% of Lithuanians belonged to the Roman Catholic Church.[70] The Church has been the majority denomination since the Christianisation of Lithuania at the end of the 14th century.". I believe there is no statistical evidence to suggest that godless nations commit more suicide. -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_suicide_rate, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithuania#Religion

To wrap this all up I believe that this is either a good troll or a completely ignorant individual. I would suggest you go to your nearest atheist and have a fine chat with them asking about what they believe and why. Who knows you may find that atheist are not bad people at all

Among all the dumb things i've read on here, this has to be one of the dumbest... I'm glad to see that others have taken you to task for me. It's just sad that so many people defend their Christian beliefs with such vitriol for the other side. The bottom line is neither side can be certain that their opinion is right, so why not just let people believe what they want to believe and treat each other with dignity and respect. I think that that is what God would want.

One of the biggest fallicies in Christianity (and many other religions) is this idea that God can do anything. Assuming the views of Jesus of Nazareth were correct, God is a spirit and, therefore, incapable of intervening directly into our physical world. Since the God of Jesus loves all people unconditionally, he would, of course, be very saddened by the shootings in Aurora and, most certainly, would have stopped it before it happened, if he could have. Alas, the only way God can do anything in this world is through people who, yes, because of that free will thing, don't always respond to his inspiration. But when it happens, as it did with those who helped others to get out of that theater, is when you see God at work.

Rick, God can do anything. He just watched and allowed the shooter to be blinded by his sin of pride and rejection of His truth. He'll take care of that shooter, as He will all of us, in His time, not man's.

Perhaps God is the reason the gun jammed? Perhaps God is the reason there were survivors? The truth is no one human on Earth is capable of knowing the absolute truth about the existence of a higher being. Maybe he is real, maybe he isn’t. BUT if we stop believing in God, much of our hope is lost. I know during my hard times, it’s what keeps me going. I do not believe that makes me a weak person, it makes me a person that believes in the power of hope.

God Bless you SS. That's what we are suppose to do. Look towards God for everything.

      @SS

Hope is not predicated on the belief in a higher power.

Funny...people who believe everything is in god's hands still look both ways before crossing the street.

Cody, that's called wisdom that Jesus gave us.

Here is a comment specifcally for the poster of this question. 1. Read you Bible (even if you are not Christian). 2. Determine what the Bibles "theme" happens to be. 3. You'll have the answer to your question.

Locked out. Theater didn't allow guns. Only law abiding citizens complied. Now that you have your answer, PH UK off.
