Chick-fil-A wades into a fast-food fight over same-sex marriage rights

By Sarah Aarthun, CNN

Atlanta (CNN) - Ordering lunch just got a lot more complicated than deciding how to answer, "Do you want fries with that?"

Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy sparked reactions that were swift and strong after he weighed in on same-sex marriage by saying his company backs the traditional family unit.

Politicians from Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to former GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum spoke up. Supporters and opponents of same-sex marriage protested. And suddenly, the type of fast-food bag you carry could reveal your views on a hot-button social issue that has split the country.

Some proponents of same-sex marriage have decried Cathy's comments and called for a boycott of the chain, which had annual sales of more than $4.1 billion last year and has more than 1,615 locations in 39 states and Washington, D.C., with the strongest concentration in the Southeast.

Seeing the support for Chick-fil-A, I am amazed, no flabbergasted, no at a complete and utter loss to understand, how anyone, and I mean anyone, can hold these beliefs. How can any sane person, and I mean anyone, believe that there is a rational reason to discriminate against a disliked minority based on their religion? Isn't is excruciatingly obvious that those views are wrong, no, more than wrong, immoral?

We live in a society that provides freedom of religion. The US Constitution, as the absolute highest law of the land, guarantees that everyone can freely exercise their own religion, and worship as they see fit. Freely exercising your own chosen religion is only possible if everyone else keeps their religion out of your life. The US Constitution therefor guarantees that religion can never set secular policy.

If religion can never set secular policy, the religious argument against same sex marriage only affects those that adhere to that particular religion. It doesn't ever apply to anyone that doesn't subscribe to that religion. So, if you think that your religion prohibits same sex marriage, you are free to not enter into one, but you are not free to prevent anyone else from entering into one.

Claiming that there is a religious argument to prohibit secular same sex marriage, IS trying to force your religion on someone else. It is the textbook definition of bigotry.

      Why do atheists care?

Atheism has nothing to believe in.

      July 28, 2012 at 11:19 pm |
    • Koji

Ransom, by that logic why do atheists do anything?

To really answer your question, the answer is two fold. First, atheists are used to being abused and looked at as immoral or second class citizens... Scroll through the comments here for proof on that. So we stick up for ANY minorities that are being repressed.

Second, and more practically, once we let people walk over other peoples rights under the flag of religion, we know we'll eventually be next... Maybe not under marriage but on other issues.

      Hi LinCa.

I sorta understand your feelings on this. A few years ago there was a uproar about South Carolina and the flying of the Confederate flag on the top of the State Capitol building. In a compromise they moved it from the top of the capitol to a memorial on the grounds. For some in the African American community this was not enough and they vowed to bring the State of South Carolina to its knees with a boycott. So far that boycott has pretty much failed to move the flag but at the same time African Americans are still heading over to South Carolina for events and celebrations.

I think that serious boycotting might be a thing of the past. Companies have gotten much smarter and in South Carolina's case, state enti'ties. The point is that, just as we have Gay and Lesbians all over society, there is a good or a absolute fact that working behind the counters of Chick-fil-A are also members of the Gay and Lesbian community. Chances are also that in those extremely long lines, there are and will be Gay and Lesbians. Same as when some clothing manufacture has a all white catolog, or ones with a Gay and Lesbian couple, groups will call for “boycotts”. Its almost what they do.

When you type in “boycott”, into Google so far I see boycotts of:

      BP
      HarperCollins
      Isreal
      Amazon
      GoDaddy
      The Home Depot
      Nestle
      Target
      Best Buy
      Heinz Foods
      McDonalds
      Salvation Army
      Cheetos
      Nokia
      Spirit Airlines
      Nike
      Apple Computers
      Petco
      JcPennys
      Wal-Mart
      StarBucks
States of Arizona and South Carolina
      Skechers

And to close Rush Limbaugh and John Stewart.

Whew..... Now remember the BP oil spill, how many of us still go to BP if they have the cheapest gas?
Also, try this, what happens when these groups cross paths? Say a BP owner is Hispanic and Gay and supports the Gay and Lesbian community. Should we expect Gays and Hispanics to boycott and try to avoid doing business with him just because of what happened on the Deep Sea Horizon?
Chick-Fil- A, employees a very diverse demographic of society. With UN-employement hitting a lot of minorities, how is a boycott of such a company going to play out in those communities?

I think the heat would be on Chick-Fil-a if they made a declarative statement about excluding LGBTs from employment or service in their restaurants. Think about it, when there was the Civil Rights movements our community only asked for equal access, not a change of “heart” at the top of the Woolworth's and other companies that segregated.

Also, remember it was not even a year ago that Oba was saying the exact same thing. Now with Rom tied in some polls, ahead in others and closer than comfortable in others, now all of a sudden he has finally adopted “change”. Now, he has not done anything about helping the Gay and Lesbian community since saying that he is now for Gay Marriage but I will leave that to the Gay and Lesbian community on that.

Either way, I do not hold a view on Gay Marriage but at least in the head of Chick-Fil-A, we do see a person that sticks by his views, does not change them like politicians such as Oba and Rom. In some ways, I can admire that even though I have neither a yay or nay.

I am always surprised, when a Christian including myself state their beliefs and are suddenly called bigoted for stating what we believe. Add to that the insults from the atheists and liberals. What happened to common respect of each other and freedom of expression and religion. Mr cathy did not say he hated anyone just what he believes. Folks have a little respect for others. if you dont agree with what they say, fine state your belief and move on. You dont have to be disrespectful.

The problem is not with opinions or words. The problem lies in the fact that Chick-fil-a has donated millions of dollars to groups that seek to legalize discrimination against gays and lesbians. Customers should know where the money they spend at any business is going. Those of us who find discrimination to be abhorrent will chose not to spend our money at a place that would use that money to harm innocent people.

      July 28, 2012 at 7:27 pm |

midwest, you've got to understand that some christians NEED to vilify gays and lesbians, because their entire belief system is based on them feeling superior to everyone else. It doesn't matter to them that there is no factual basis for their bigotry. This is why when they discriminate against others, any complaint is "BS", but when someone reminds them that this is a secular nation, they whine as if they were victims.

      July 28, 2012 at 7:33 pm |
    • midwest rail

Thanks for your help, Captain Obvious. I'll let her tell us all WHY the story is " bs ".

      July 28, 2012 at 7:33 pm |
    • kway

It is bs because CNN chooses to scandalize and misquote individuals. They demonstrate a poor adherence to proper reporting of the news. “We are very much supportive of the family—the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that,” said Cathy. This statement is not full of hate as cnn surmises. The reality is that big business owners give money away to controversial organizations all the time. They choose to use their money as they see fit. Thankfully, you can choose to either support or not support them.

The list of laws and abominations goes on and on and most christians simply ignore those rules they find inconvenient. However, the United States is a secular nation. It doesn't matter what your bible says, because there is nothing in the Const.itution that says anything about depriving people their rights on the basis of your bible or any other mythology.

    For Keith:

Actually, Keith, your sicko religion is quite nasty enough before we even get into its ambiguous and self-inconsistent content re homosexuality. I mean, take a look at some of the common nastiness such as the following that's in the Christian book of nasty, AKA the bible:

    Numbers 31:17-18
17 Now kiII all the boys. And kiII every woman who has slept with a man,
18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

Deuteronomy 13:6 – “If your brother, your mother’s son or your son or daughter, or the wife you cherish, or your friend who is as your own soul entice you secretly, saying, let us go and serve other gods … you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death”

Revelations 2:23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

Note that the bible is also very clear that you should sacrifice and burn an animal today because the smell makes sicko Christian sky fairy happy. No, you don't get to use the parts for food. You burn them, a complete waste of the poor animal.

Yes, the bible really says that, everyone. Yes, it's in Leviticus, look it up. Yes, Jesus purportedly said that the OT commands still apply. No exceptions. But even if you think the OT was god's mistaken first go around, you have to ask why a perfect, loving enti-ty would ever put such horrid instructions in there. If you think rationally at all, that is.

And then, if you disagree with my interpretation, ask yourself how it is that your "god" couldn't come up with a better way to communicate than a book that is so readily subject to so many interpretations and to being taken "out of context", and has so many mistakes in it. Pretty pathetic god that you've made for yourself.

So get out your sacrificial knife or your nasty sky creature will torture you eternally. Or just take a closer look at your foolish supersti-tions, understand that they are just silly, and toss them into the dustbin with all the rest of the gods that man has created.

Ask the questions. Break the chains. Join the movement. Be free of Christianity and other superstitions.

As far as I'm concerned, you qu.eers can go right back into your closets. Go back to hiding in the darkness of a stinky highway rest area toilet-where your evil deserves to be. I don't want you portraying your perversion as mainstream. You are tools of your father, Satan-and he will gladly use you and then destroy you. Go back under that rock from which you came. I know this won't happen. In fact, because the church didn't have any balls to stand up to you, you will flourish. But I and others like me will openly oppose you at every turn. Someone needs to stand up to the evil of ho.m.os.e.x.uality. The only hope for you is repentance. But for those who will not, know that at least someone will oppose your brand of evil.

And you're pretty powerful too, aren't you Keith? Where do you work? McDonalds or Burger King? Im guessing it's either flipping the burgers or taking out the garbage (IQ is not high enough to be a cashier and you clearly have zero social skills). So good luck opposing gays with all that power you have...

Jen, My IQ is not the issue here. Never have worked at either place-but don't look down on those who do(unlike elitist pigs such as yourself who think you are soooo much better than everyone else). These places are a good stepping stone for high school students and anyone else who is starting off in life. Not everyone can start out on 3rd base(like you evidently have) thinking they've hit a triple. Unfortunately, full grown adults are forced to work at BK and McD's because the economy in this country sucks(which is a direct result of disobeying God).

Keith, there is more evidence to show that hom.os.exuality is innate than there is proof to support the existence of any god. Your religion is the perverse thing here. Perhaps it's time for you to crawl back under your rock.

So I am elitist for judging uneducated people but there's nothing wrong with you judging people for their s-xual orientation (and calling them nasty names)? Interesting. Hypocrite much? (don't worry, I know your level of education isn't high enough to know what that means). I have no problem with people that work at fast food places. I have a problem with those that are hateful and full of bigotry. And people that are hateful are always uneducated. Like yourself. Not all uneducated people are hateful but you are.

The economy is bad because people are disobeying god? Are you serious? Then can you please explain why Canada's economy has just become better and better since gay marriage has become legal? And why Canada has a higher standard of living and people live longer despite there being far more atheists and agnostics per capita? Please explain how this is possible.

Jen, Is your last name Himmler by chance? The nazis exterminated the "uneducated" who had "low" IQ's. To read your posts, you appear to be bigotted towards those who aren't as "educated" as you OBVIOUSLY are. Perhaps you could set up a camp and re-educate those of us whom you deem to be "uneducated"? You people are all alike-demonize in any way possible anyone who does not hold the view that you do. And as your pal Huebert demonstrates, you have a plan of "name-calling" that you use to do this. Ironic thing is, though, only the simple-minded fall for this tactic and actually believe lies you spout.

Kieth you are a complete moron, please keep posting so that everyone can see just how dumb you are. You will notice that only the dumbest people on the board agree with you. That tells me all I need to know.

I'm an openly gay man and my partner and I enjoy dining at our local chick fil A resto. My partner and I would sometime get too comfy and end up smooching while waiting for our order. Their staff wouldn't mind nor would they give us strange looks. What Dan Cathy said is just a matter of expressing his opinion and I respect him for that. And there wasn't anything malicious in his remarks. I have chosen this lifestyle and will continue to dine at chick fil A.

Yes, I do! We are all going to hell anyway. So why not admit that they are right and we are wrong. LGBTs we'll have the grandest party down there!

This is an intelligent and very correct statement. What the the president of Chick-Fil-A said was ABSOULETY RIGHT and it is very good of you to acknowledge that and not call him all sorts of bad names because of it.

Kieth I agree, they did an excellent job of proving your point. Your point being that you are a clueless moron.
