Black pastors group launches anti-Obama campaign around gay marriage

By Dan Merica, CNN

Washington (CNN) – A group of conservative black pastors are responding to President Barack Obama’s support of same-sex marriage with what they say will be a national campaign aimed at rallying black Americans to rethink their overwhelming support of the President, though the group’s leader is offering few specifics about the effort.

The Rev. Williams Owens, who is president and founder of the Coalition of African-Americans Pastors and the leader of the campaign, has highlighted opposition to same-sex marriage among African-Americans. He calls this campaign “an effort to save the family.”

“The time has come for a broad-based assault against the powers that be that want to change our culture to one of men marrying men and women marrying women,” said Owens, in an interview Tuesday after the launch event at the National Press Club. “I am ashamed that the first black president chose this road, a disgraceful road.”

At the press conference, Owens was joined by five other black regional pastors and said there were 3,742 African-American pastors on board for the anti-Obama campaign.

When asked at the press conference for specifics about the campaign – funding, planned events and goals – Owens said only that the group’s first fundraiser will be on August 16 in Memphis, Tennessee. But Owens insisted that “we are going to go nationwide with our agenda just like the president has gone to Hollywood.”

In May, Obama announced on ABC News that he thought “same sex couples should be able to get married." The president had previously said that he opposed gay marriage, but said in May that his views were personal and did not represent a policy change.

In a fiery Tuesday press conference at the press club, Owens said Obama was taking the black vote for granted and decried the idea of similarities between the gay rights movement and the civil rights movement, an assertion made by the NAACP following Obama’s same-sex marriage support.

Owens has long been an opponent of gay marriage and consults with the National Organization for Marriage as a liaison to the black churches.

At the press conference, Owens said that Obama’s support of same-sex marriage tantamount to supporting child molestation.

“If you watch the men who have been caught having sex with little boys, you will note that all of them will say that they were molested as a child…” Owens said. “For the president to condone this type of thing is irresponsible.”

Owens later walked about those comments back, saying he didn’t think the president was condoning molestation.

Earlier this year, memos obtained by The Human Rights Campaign in a Maine civil actions suit revealed that NOM aims at making gay marriage a wedge issued “between gays and blacks,” according to the released confidential plans.

“The strategic goal of this project is to drive a wedge between gays and blacks - two key Democratic constituencies," one NOM memo states. In light of the release, Brian Brown, president of NOM, said that he is proud of the group’s “strong record” on minority partnerships.

A Pew Research Center poll conducted in April found that 49% of African-Americans oppose legalized same-sex marriage, compared with 39% who support it. But that shows a softening on the position in recent years; In 2008, only 26% of blacks were in favor of same sex marriage, according to the same Pew poll.

At the same time, black voters overwhelmingly supported Obama in 2008, while more recent polling shows a nearly equal level of support for the president’s 2012 reelection.

In a Public Religion Research Institute poll released last week, 18% of black Americans surveyed said they see same-sex marriage a “critical issue,” putting it behind the economy, education, deficit, a growing wealth gap and immigration.

According to Robert P. Jones, the CEO of the polling company, there is no evidence that same-sex marriage is something African-Americans will bring to the ballot box in November.

“Among African-Americans, I think same-sex marriage will be a nonissue in the election,” Jones told CNN. “We just have no evidence what so ever in slippage of support for Obama, even after his announcement in support of same sex marriage.”

The reaction of black pastors to the president’s support for gay marriage has been as varied as their congregations, ranging from condemnation to congratulations.

"We may disagree with our president on this one issue," Rev. Wallace Charles Smith said from the pulpit of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington on the Sunday after Obama announced his support for legalized gay unions. "But we will keep him lifted up in prayer. ... pray for President Barack Obama."

At the Tuesday press conference, Owens questioned Obama’s commitment to black Americans, stating that the president is just “half-black, half-white” and has long “ignored the black press.”

He is “ignoring the people that put him in the White House,” Owens said.

They've always let bullies get married.
Just ask the 4.8 million women battered every year in the US by their husbands.
Since bully behaviour has a negative impact on families, especially children, and undermines the purpose of the insti/tution of marriage, perhaps we should deny anyone convicted of a violent crime the right to marry.

It is baffling to me that Rev. William Owens, who was an activist in the civil rights movement (which was a fight for equal rights), chooses to now preach and take a stance against Equal Rights. I guess it only matters when his rights are affected or not seen as valid. And a man of "God" no less. I believe the only "god" he serves is himself.

    August 1, 2012 at 8:11 am |
    • harmonno98

Bro. Owens is standing up as a "man of God", by simply following the "word of God" over popular opinion. With in the Bible God's moral standards are found (see-10 commandments,
Ex. 20), and the words of Christ himself: "Matt 19:4-5. Civil rights with the issue of discrimination based on "color", is a world of difference based on "choice" of and individual to follow a "behavior". The law "discriminates" all the time based on "immoral" or unacceptable behavior to society as a whole every day.

Please debate Rev. Williams Owens on gay marriage, it is unbelievable the hypocrisy that is going on in our community these days. To deny equal rights to gay Americans and use the civil rights movement as a bases is shameful. Someone needs to tell him equal rights for "ALL! Americans" It is remarkable how he contradicts himself in one sentence, do people listen to the words that are coming out of there mouth. "People died and they suffered for people to have equal rights in the United States" then to go on to deny rights to people is the height of hypocrisy.

Some 21st century nitty gritty for the pastors to contemplate:

(Some words hyphenated to get past the moderators "secret" word filter.)

o "Abrahamics" believe that their god created all of us and of course that includes the gay members of the human race. Also, those who have studied ho-mo-se-xuality have determined that there is no choice involved therefore gays are gay because god made them that way.

    To wit:

    1. The Royal College of Psy-chiatrists stated in 2007:

“ Despite almost a century of psy-choanalytic and psy-chological speculation, there is no substantive evidence to support the suggestion that the nature of parenting or early childhood experiences play any role in the formation of a person’s fundamental heteros-exual or hom-ose-xual orientation. It would appear that s-exual orientation is biological in nature, determined by a complex interplay of ge-netic factors and the early ut-erine environment. Se-xual orientation is therefore not a choice.[60] "

    2. "Garcia-Falgueras and Swaab state in the abstract of their 2010 study, "The fe-tal brain develops during the intraut-erine period in the male direction through a direct action of tes-tosterone on the developing nerve cells, or in the female direction through the absence of this hor-mone surge. In this way, our gender identi-ty (the conviction of belonging to the male or female gender) and s-exual orientation are programmed or organized into our brain structures when we are still in the womb. There is no indication that social environment after birth has an effect on gender ident–ity or s-exual orientation."[8

    3. See also the Philadelphia Inquirer review “Gay Gene, Deconstructed”, 12/12/2011. Said review addresses the following “How do genes associated with ho-mose-xuality avoid being weeded out by Darwinian evolution?”

Of course, those gays who belong to Abrahamic religions supposedly abide by the rules of no adu-ltery or for-nication allowed.

And because of basic biology differences said monogamous ventures should always be called same-se-x unions not same-se-x marriages.
    To wit:

From below, on top, backwards, forwards, from this side of the Moon and from the other side too, ga-y s-exual activity is still mutual mas-turbation caused by one or more complex s-exual differences. Some differences are visually obvious in for example the complex maleness of DeGeneres, Billy Jean King and Rosie O'Donnell.
Yes, heteros-exuals practice many of the same "moves" but there is never a doubt who is the female and who is the male.

As noted, there are basic biological differences in gay unions vs. heterose-xual marriage. Government benefits are the same in both but making the distinction is important for census data and for social responses with respect to potential issues with disease, divorce and family interactions.

GO SIT DOWN and read your own bible. Thou shalt not judge unless ye to be judged. And when Jesus died for ALL of our sins, I guess that meant yours for being judgemental. God was straightforward in what he wanted and didnt want. If you and i can read the same sentence and get two diffirent opinions, IT NOT FACT ITS AN OPINION. Why not protest the drug dealers, robbing and killing in the streets, stop your pastors from "dating" church members when the wife isnt looking(one of the TEN COMMANDMENTS AND STRAIGHT FORWARD) and stealing from the congregation. I think there is enough on the plate of life here in America that we as BLACK AMERICANS can get behind rather than getting in the middle of LOVE between any two people no matter who they are. Maybe if they learned to practice some love and forgiveness, then the Black community as a whole could too. Choosing who can be loved or accepted by GOD is not something they should be concerned with because I'd like to hear what they'd tell the GOD when he ask why should he love them anymore than someone else and why did they alienate one of his own. But thank you Father for not being a vengeful and unforgiving GOD. because if we listen those who suppose to be our "leaders" none of us including them would EVER make it to heaven. Just my thoughts.

Marriage is designed to protect any neighborhood, any city, any nation from an abundance of illegitimate births. The primary individuals protected in marriage are women and children. Our nation is NOT founded on a principle of "majority" rules – as in many cases the majority of people have wrong thinking. Regardless of the polls showing higher favor for changing the definition of marriage – by dillutiing the definition of marriage you make IT WEAKER AND make mothers and children more vulnerable to being abandoned – QUIT the attack on heathy two parent households.

@ rob: the origin of marriage was set up to accomplish a few goals.
      1) it was so the village could see whom is getting "wed" and verify they weren't kin; so as to prevent inbreeding.
      2) it was a formal showing of two families becoming one and their new status.
      3) it was a finacial agreement set up by the two fathers of the families seeing quite a few "marriages" throughout early history were arranged marriages.
      4) certain marriages were set up to prevent opposing countries from going to war, or as a peace agreement because you "weren't suppose to" fight your kin.

      @Wayfaring Stranger
Perhaps you all should get some belt buckles made that say "God is With Us", or "Gott mit uns" to be historically accurate.

How would giving gay couples the same legal protections as straights cause women and children to be abandoned?
Do you think that removing the limitation against gay couples would cause more men to suddenly become gay and leave their wives?
Here in Canada, gay marriage has been legal for some time. There have been absolutely no statistical variances in separation/divorce/birth/marriage rates since its inception.
Also, when last I checked, women were perfectly capable of caring for themselves. Why do all women need a protector in your opinion?
I agree that one of marriage's primary purposes is to provide stability for offspring, but how would a loving marriage between two women be any less stable than between man and woman? Given the overwhelming prevalence of divorce, wouldn't a two parent family be more capable of supporting a child than a single parent?

The whole matter of too much freedom for gays has something to do with the history of the "Free World".

Are we actually aware that there was not always a Free World? Up to 1742 a. D. Europe was under the rule of the pope (-rat). The pope was the highest ecclesiastical leader, and at the same time temporal leader on earth. The pope had more power than the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation, today simply called Germany. First by the powerful impact of Frederic the Great, the Protestant King of Pruzzia, the pope lost his temporal power, and the mordern Europe began to emerge.

The philosophical counterpart of that political freeing was the Enlightenment, which was also highly promoted by Frederic the Great. Englightenment is or was not anti-Christian, but anti-Catholic, and anti-bigoted. Enlightenment is faith without bigotry, a faith which is extremly connected with virtue against all people independent from belief, colour, nationality, status, etc..

At the time of Enlightenment the word "Freedom" meant chiefly freedom from the rule of the Roman Catholic Church, both political and spiritual or ecclesiastical. For the enlightened Portestants Catholicism meant backwardness (Islam was not yet an issue, because no Muslims lifed in Europe, but, of course, Islam also means backwardness).

Our current problem is that we still appreciate freedom, but have lost the strong Protestant background. Freedom makes sense only in connection with a pious backround.

Of course, Frederic the Great or Voltaire or Newton or Joseph II never had promoted or even allowed gay marriage – impossible. Their notion of freedom did not mean gay marriage.

Freedom is good, and it is good when in a state nobody is persecuted or hindered because of his belief. It is only that freedom can only be kept by rulers which are adherents of a very kind and moderate Protestantism without any bigotry. Such rulers don't appreciate any creed, but only the true visible virtue and merit. Yet, the true faith is the faith which brings about virtue and merit. Hence, if a state rewards virtue and merit, it promotes automatically the true Church.

Let is be honest, gayness and gay marriage belong to people which usually have left all the ways of virtue, not only concerning se-xuality, but concerning all matters of morality. This should not be rewarded by the state, but be outlawed.

Obama indeed needs some lessons about the history of the Free World and Enlightenment.

      August 1, 2012 at 7:04 am |

Ask any sociologist and he will confirm that gayness of a person is often connected with low moral standards of the certain person in general.

Hence, acceptance of gayness or gay marriage indirectly means accptance of malice, wickedness, evil and destruction.

        Do you want that?

      @rain: allow me to enlighten you. a few history lessons;
1)"The Battle of Tours followed 21 years of Umayyad conquests in Europe which had begun with the invasion of the Visigothic Christian Kingdoms of the Iberian peninsula in 711. These were followed by military expeditions into the Frankish territories of Gaul, former provinces of the Roman Empire." notice the date? it's in the year 711 CE
2)"Their notion of freedom did not mean gay marriage." these gentlemens notions of anything are strictly a result of their enviroment and the thoughts and problems of their time period. seeing as minorities/women/ almost anyone not of wealthy background had alomost no "freedom" to begin with this comment means absolutely nothing.
      3) "Let is be honest, gayness and gay marriage belong to people which usually have left all the ways of virtue, not only concerning se-xuality, but concerning all matters of morality. This should not be rewarded by the state, but be outlawed." thankfully you have no control of our lovely secular government otherwise you would hand us lot stock and barrel over to whatever religious leader promised you eternal happiness if you followed him. marriage is control by the government not by any religious organization and being "gay" is a natural order of life. males don't see a problem with their wife/ girlfriend having a-n-a-l s-e-x to pleasure them; but view it as sinful and unnatural when two people of the same gender.......and yes even lesbians enjoy it; commit the same actions, that makes you a hypocrite.

Not just "filthy sodomite" behaviour – any kind of fornication spreads those diseases.

"Let is be honest, gayness and gay marriage belong to people which usually have left all the ways of virtue, not only concerning se-xuality, but concerning all matters of morality. This should not be rewarded by the state, but be outlawed."

The experts around the world disagree with you. Heterosexual behavior and homosexual behavior are normal aspects of human sexuality. Despite the persistence of stereotypes that portray lesbian, gay, and bisexual people as disturbed, several decades of research and clinical experience have led all mainstream medical and mental health organizations in this country to conclude that these orientations represent normal forms of human experience. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the American School Counselor Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the National Association of SocialWorkers, together representing more than 480,000 mental health professionals, have all taken the position that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and thus is not something that needs to or can be “cured."

It is one thing to sin and ask God's forgiveness of the sin. It is quite another to speak for God (as owbaama does) and openly condone, approve, and endorse the sin. Those that promote behavior against God's word will be void of the Holy Spirit and the hope, joy and fruits of the Spirit that that accompany the true Faith. I applaud these ministers for standing strong in their faith and the Word of God. For those commenting here that haven't read the New Testament do yourself a favor.... read it.. It can and will be life altering. God's Word does not return void.

ok another one of those bible thumpers, huh? ok please show me any passage in the bible; and mind you i grew up southern baptist so i know that book as well; that saids " marriage is between male and female only." i know from reading every page of that book that it doesn't exsist. people only interrpt it how it makes them feel happy.
second thing, the church...........and i mean any church has absolutely zero, zilch, no power of marriage; that honor thankfully is in the hands of our secular government which is free from religions direct influence. that is how this country was designed by the founders and how it shall stay.

Tdog: When one uses their belief that is solely based on a book written 200o years ago to deny equal rights to people, their belief fails. Science has provided numerous studies that state that what those sheep herding men wrote is wrong. There is no verifiable evidence to support your imaginary friend god or its imaginary arch enemy satan. There is evidence to say that the buybull was written by man, inspired by man...nothing more. It is you who is too blind to see reality and you who is living a lie. Give one reason without using your buybull as to why these dolts are correct...what has a person who is gay ever done to cause you personal distress? Btw: you fail to see how dumb you look...you obviously wear clothing made of two different materials-should we stone you to death for that? Have you looked at another female/male and thought they were beautiful or handsome? We then need to stone you to death for that!! Think before you speak and learn to do a little research instead of just accepting what is preached to you from the pulpit. Try basing your views on updated information. You are clearly a hypocritical bigot and not safe to be in society.

For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
Rom 1:22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools,
Rom 1:23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
Rom 1:24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves,
Rom 1:25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
      Rom 1:26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature;
Rom 1:27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
Rom 1:28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.

If you want to continue "Bending Forward", that's OK. However, you may want to be somewhat careful as you continue "Bending Forward". It could be detrimental to your health and well being. And if you end up (continue) enjoying it, you may end up in REAL trouble.

@chick: ummmm seriously? i'm not even going to get into your grammer, but a bit of truth. illegal or undocu-mented immigrants do jobs like picking fruit by hand, bailing hay and other manuel labour that most snotty americans think they are too good to do. if amercans al became doctors, lawyers all the high dollar careers, but no one became a plumber america would have a lot of smart folks with stopped up toilets. so if you want to conplain about folks that come to america and accept any kind of labour, then please be the first to get off your rear and go spend all day picking fruit and working on farms where these folks do a great job.

Your psych issues are pretty deep. But your not my project.

      August 1, 2012 at 6:47 am |
    • WASP

@chick: how so? how did i place fresh fruit above anything? i bluntly stated that no illegal or undoc-umented worker is going to just come to america and take up a job making $50,000 or more a year. most illegal workers work on farms and in orchards, they work doing construction at low wage predominately in the south; however they are migratory workers that move around the country following the growing season of various food stuffs. if you want to work, there is work. it isn't glorious work or going to make you rich, but they need lots of help planting and growing mushrooms, where fewer young americans are wanting to work, they need help pulling in all kinds of berries and larger citrus fruits. so if you want to claim that obama is allowing illegal workers to still jobs from african-americans, please get your facts straight. they aren't stealing work from anyone, americans are too lazy and above themselves to be willing to do what it takes to earn a living even if it doesn't get them a $100,000 contract and the "high life".

@chick: no i'm not an employer, i'm a employee. i'm a natural born america atheist that has read and studied somethings other than the bible. plus growing up in the south i have worked beside these folks on farms. BTW they are no different than me or you; they just want to be able to see their family have a better life. i have nothing against that; being disabled now due to my military service, i can no longer work on farms as i did when i was a child/young man......but i do miss the sweat on my brow and the knowledge that i had earned my pay with my own two hands.

      August 1, 2012 at 7:46 am |
    • WASP

@chick: being atheist isn't a religion. it is a belief because i believe in no gods, or santa clause or the toothfairy or any other made up creatures. if you don't believe me look up the websters defintion of religion, faith and belief.
you wanna see something funny? also research the defintion of an extra-terristrial aka an alien, and the defintion of magic because religious people believe in both of those things due to their belief in any god.

As I said, the legal standing of atheism in US is recognized as a religion

Atheists are not very bright so you will struggle eith that for a long while

I actually think atheists are less than 10 percent as intelligent as they think of their own intelligence

Sodomy is for the detached creep who is less than 15 pc as intelligent as their own self estimatation
