Christian college student's idea leads to rally for burned mosque

By Josh Levs, CNN

(CNN) - When 20-year-old Ashley Carter heard about a mosque burned to the ground in her town this week, she was shocked.

"I was very saddened," she told CNN on Wednesday. "I thought it was very evil."

So Carter, a student at Ozark Christian College in Joplin, Missouri, texted a friend, suggesting they organize an event "promoting acts of love."

But quickly, the idea changed: They would organize a "rally of people coming together, from all walks of life, all religions, a really diverse group of people trying to promote this radical love."

She called Kimberly Kester, spokeswoman for the Islamic Society of Joplin, whose worship house serving about 50 families in the southwest Missouri city burned down Monday. Investigators have not determined the cause, but the mosque has been attacked in the past.

My Faith: After my mosque was torched

Kester supported the idea. So Carter and some of her friends created the plan for the rally and announced it on a Facebook page. The next day, Tuesday, word began to spread. By Wednesday morning, more than 400 people had posted that they would attend the event, scheduled for Saturday, August 25.

Carter said she was inspired by "my love for Jesus. And I know that Jesus calls us to love people."

"With everything that's been happening in the news this week" - which includes a shooting Sunday at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin that left six worshipers and the gunman dead - "I was pretty discouraged," Carter said. "Regardless of what you believe, I think everybody's entitled to loving whoever."

Kester told CNN she and other members of the mosque plan to attend the rally.

The response to the burning from people throughout the community has been "outstanding," she said. "There were representatives from different churches, different organizations at the site that afternoon speaking to the Imam. People have been calling anyone that they know that has been involved with the mosque, offering to help."

St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Joplin is hosting an iftar - a meal eaten by Muslims after dark during Ramadan - on Wednesday evening. The Council on American-Islamic Relations announced that speakers will include members of the interfaith community. Sponsoring groups include the South Joplin Christian Church, the United Hebrew Congregation, the First Community Church and Peace Lutheran Church, CAIR said.

Representatives of various Islamic groups will attend, Kester said. They will discuss the future and what provisions are needed to continue Sunday school and prayers.

The mosque is holding daily prayers at someone's house now, and expects to rent a new place as soon as this week, although numerous religious institutions have offered their facilities, Kester said.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

"We're hoping for security and that type of support from our community," she added.

Members say this is an opportunity to kind of start over and improve on things that we've always wanted to improve upon, like our security system or Sunday school facilities," she said. "It's a time for us to unite and focus on supporting each other. And yes, it's a tragedy ... but we want to focus on coming together and building a stronger community."

No final decision has been made on whether the mosque will move to a new location, but there is a consensus to move inside the city limits, Kester said. "We feel that the response time for fire employees would be less if were in the city limits and it would offer us a little bit more protection and security."

No definite plans will be made before an investigation is completed into the burning, said the mosque's treasurer, Navid Zaidi. "We need to get this crime solved, before we do anything."

He said he hopes the rally is safe and that authorities keep everyone protected. Assuming the fire was arson, the perpetrator "is out there - he is loose," Zaidi said.

Zaidi described the support coming from the community as "tremendous."

A fundraising effort to help rebuild the mosque is off to an auspicious start.

The website of the official campaign shows a goal of $250,000, with more than $40,000 pledged by Wednesday afternoon.

A video for the campaign refers to the mosque as "our refuge in a crazy and hectic world." It shows what the mosque looked like, followed by images of the charred wreckage.

Arsalan Iftikhar, an international human rights lawyer and founder of TheMuslimGuy.com, tweeted that he will donate a dollar for every retweet of his message. He quickly got hundreds of retweets.

Iftikhar is a frequent contributor to CNN.com.

Carter says she expects donations to be taken at the rally. And anyone who wants to donate money to cover the costs of staging the rally can through the Facebook page.

Different kinds of bands will play, including religious bands, she said. And speakers will talk about "promoting love."

"When there's an act of hate, you have a choice to make it something beautiful. So that's what this is all about: making things beautiful from things that aren't."

Churches are getting burned daily in Muslim majority countries, and in some countries it's illegal to worship in public or build a church. Islamic media never reports this. Christians are the only people in this world being persecuted all the time, yet being the most tolerant and peaceful people.

And you who are so proud of American exceptionalism, want to say that because other countries don't have freedom of religious expression as a founding principle, we should overlook hatred and bigotry?

You are either proud of our founding values or not. If you are proud of our founding values, stamp out this hate within our borders and be that shining city on a hill that you claim to be.

Then maybe others will see what we accomplish here and recognize it as 'right'.

You think it's OK that we lower ourselves to their level?

yes, there are lots of Muslim countries that don't have religious freedom. When Christian missionaries set up shop they get persecuted. So?? Did they not expect this reaction??

Christians are persecuted in Nigeria and India. Does make it 'right' to behave the same way here?

Really, how can anyone who professes Christianity, hate so much?

Jesus is pretty abundantly clear on the topic.

Can it be any clearer than Matthew 5?
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.'
39 But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
40 And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.
41 If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.
42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’
44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?
47 And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?
48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
I don't believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ, but these people think he is their pan-dimensional, pervasive, creator. This stuff is pretty unambigous!

This article is a great example of how Americans should treat each other. I hope there is a huge turnout for this rally and they quickly raise their goal to help these people build a new mosque. What did that guy Jesus say, love your neighbor as yourself?

I cannot believe that after the horror of the Joplin tornado last year, someone would try to burn down this mosque. How quickly some forget, and return to attack members of their own community.

      August 9, 2012 at 11:12 pm |
    • Jesus

Prayer does not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs! , .

I don't feel bad that a mosque got burned down to the ground.
I feel bad that you have no where to pray because it is what we do.

    However; the logic stands:

Christians try over and over again to build churches around the Muslim world but few stay up or even are allowed to be built. Until Muslims allow Christians freedom to pray around the world: don't be surprised why your mosques are NOT welcome in our neighborhoods. Hate brings hate. Enough said.

Just imagine what some loyal American is carefully planning for in New York where a mosque wants to be near the site of the TWIN TOWERS: the destruction of a mosque that disgraced his birth spot and national pride down to the ground.

When Muslims spot being hypocrites in their part of the world and allow Christians and other religions to build in their part of the world: Your mosques will be left in PEACE. Fair is fair in love and war.

    August 9, 2012 at 7:52 pm |
    • RedWhite&Blue

You are absolutely wrong. Muslims have allowed churches and monasteries in their country from the earliest times of Islam. By contrast, look at a country like Spain where during the Inquistion Mosques were destroyed or reshaped into churches, Muslims were slaughtered or tortured into relinquishing their faith. Similarly, now in Israel, many mosques have been burnt or vandalized.

Different countries make their own rules. This country was founded on religious freedom which means everyone can worship freely. Other countries have different rules. Almost all Muslim countries allow churches and synagogues. Those that choose not to made their choice but it isn't for us to force anyone to do anything. Don't go live in that country if you don't like it but don't deny people HERE in THIS country the rights afforded to them by what it was founded on.

Instead, be proud you live in a country that rises above discrimination based on religion. Let others live as they may.

“Let me see one of you adopt one of those ugly black babies,” she says.

“Excuse me? It’s all too obvious that he has a particular disgust for black babies and therefore has no problems killing them,” Gardner responds. “The black community should be outraged because Ashutosh Virmani is a brazen racist and his statement supports what we already know of the billion dollar abortion industry–black babies are targeted because they are seen as poor, worthless and maybe even ‘ugly.’”

KEEF! Can you cite any other source for your "fairy tale"? Because World Nut Daily doesn't count as a source unless you're also allowing the National Enquirer and Jerry Springer to count as reliable sources.

Are you drunk, KEEF? You surely do appear so.

Liarprevails, I have a stone heart? I'm not the one killing defenseless babies. You are a murderer. And a racist one at that. You will answer for your crimes someday-maybe in this life, but for sure the next. And you are wrong(as usual) about abortion remaining legal. When Christ comes back to rule this earth with a rod of iron, I guran-damn-tee you there will be no more planned parenthood. I so look forward to that day. You'll likely be in hell at that point.

You are a bigoted loser. The only thing you have to back you is that 2000 year old book of multiple choice...we have numerous books to back us. Liarprevails, Black bears and Indians don't count. This guy is killing "ugly black babies". I'm actually surprised he calls them babies. As for your murderous spirit that is in you, Liarprevails-it sure does shine through in your posts. You can't help yourself. Just like your father, Satan-who was a murderer from the beginning. The murdering spirit of the atheist. Disgusting.

And still, KEEF is too much of a pus sy to answer. I'll bet he'd be all in favor of an abortion if it were Muslim embryos we were discussing.

But of course, he's too much of a hypocrite to admit it.

      August 9, 2012 at 9:17 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

Looks like KEEF has had one or 12 too many! Can't manage to write a coherent sentence now. What a shock. Come on, Keith. Why don't you tell the truth? If the fetus were Muslim, how'd you feel about abortion then? What if you'd had the opportunity to authorize an abortion for my mother, had she wanted or been able to get one? Would you have approved then?

      August 9, 2012 at 9:20 pm |

FINALLY!!! And there you have it. KEEF is definitely in favor of abortion, as long as HE is the one who gets to choose.

Thanks for admitting it, you fvcking hypocrite.

    • Keith

Tom, Let's get one thing straight-you don't d.ictate a damn thing to me. I'll answer you(maybe) when I'm damn good and ready. Got that?
      As per your question:
Hey, KEEF? If you knew I was the fetus/embryo, would you approve of an abortion for the woman carrying me??
The answer would be absolutely not. You see, tom, I don't hate you-I feel sorry for you. I believe God has given you over to a reprobate mind. You are in deep cr.ap. I'm not sure you can possibly come back from the edge of the abyss you are about to fall into. That is sad. I've prayed for you in the past, tom. And I'll do it again. But I fear you're past the point of no return.

      August 9, 2012 at 9:27 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

The silence you notice, KEEF, is the lack of any shock on the part of anyone who's seen your hateful, xenophobic, misogynistic posts. Nobody is surprised that you approve of abortion when they object is someone you deem "undesirable". You don't want women to have any say but you think it's perfectly all right for you to decide who should or shouldn't be aborted.

Well, honey, you've certainly shown your true colors. Thanks. i was hoping you'd out yourself as the hateful sh!t you are.

      August 9, 2012 at 9:30 pm |

Too late to retract, KEEF. You already gave it up and outed yourself. No way to come back from that. Can't un-ring that bell, honey.

You want to get rid of those you hate and if you could, you'd have had them aborted.

So let's get this straight-just for the record: ttps(a white woman) is for killing ugly black babies, Liarprevails(a white woman) is for killing ugly black babies, Tina(?) is for killing ugly black babies, and Hawaiiguest(?) is for killing ugly black babies.
Congratulations you racists white supremacists. Are you covered with "white power, white pride" tatoos? It must please you immensely to know that abortion has been exported to Africa by the US as a contingent to receiving foreign aid-there's lots of black babies there to abort(and not many whites, hmmmm). Right up your alley. You can whitewash yourself all you want, but you're cold-hearted baby killers-and you know it. You're also evidently quite racist. Gee, I guess that also makes you Hypocrites to the n'th degree, too.

      August 10, 2012 at 10:00 am |
    • AtheistSteve

Where exactly do you get the idea that abortion is murder? Abortion is legal and nowhere in the legal system is it defined as murder. Since your opinion isn't on par with the law we can dismiss what you say as simply religious nonsense. And where do you get the idea that a 1st trimester fetus is a baby? If it was a baby then why does the medical community call it a fetus? Or a gamete or a zygote? As far as I can tell nobody calls it a baby until it's born. And finally if you think ending a pregnancy is murder then you also have to maintain that preventing one using birth control is also murder or you come across as a total hypocrite. Of course then you're just saying that condoms=murder and we know you're a complete nutcase.

      August 10, 2012 at 10:17 am |
    • TruthPrevails :-)

Keith: No, lets get straight bozo...I'm not for killing anyone regardless of skin color. Abortion is not murder, nowhere in your giant book of fairy tales does it state it is either. However, once again your belief does not define what is legal in this world and the laws of the land state that abortion up to the end of the first trimester is legal. The laws that state that are the ones that matter. I am all for a woman's right to do as she wishes with her body...something that is clearly not your business and given that your imaginary friend can't be proven to exist, it thus is nothing to do with it either. You do not live in a theocracy, you live in a secular country...your beliefs are not the only ones to exist and thus not the only ones to respect.

And if you look carefully your God is responsible for more deaths of non born and newborns than you can imagine. From fertilized eggs that fail to implant to implanted eggs that self abort to stillborns to infant deaths all the way up to children that don't make it past the age of 5 from disease, malnutrition, birth defects and natural disasters. In fact in a essay by Gregory Paul called the Holocaust of the Children your God has directly caused the death of over 50 billion pre adolescent children throughout human history. This is the legacy of your appalling monster God. A brutal child killer if you believe (as you clearly do) that every potential life is sacred.

Actually, you are wrong. Muslims have stood with people of other faiths when bad things have happened to them. When Katrina happened, Muslim volunteers went down to New Orleans and helped. When the earthquake in Haiti took place, they also provided help. When the Sikh Temple shootings took place, Muslims stood side by side with people of the Sikh faith. Just google the following words "American Muslims Stand with Sikhs After Wis. Shootings" and read the articles that come up.

What a contrast - students from a Christian college holding a rally to share the sorrow for the burnt down mosque and show Muslims the love Jesus inspires in them. In Egypt, Pakistan, Indonesia, Tanzania, Algeria, Nigeria, India etc. scores of Christian church buildings are burned down on a regular basis, but I have never heard of Al-Azhar University in Cairo (the mot prestigious Sunni islamic university), nor any other islamic place of higher learning for that matter, holding a rally to protest such behavior, encourage the victims and show the love of Islam.
Jesus said: "And all people will know you are my disciples by your love". I challenge Muslims to out love the followers of Jesus!

      1. Muslims are not allowed to broadcast and advertise their acts of charity because then it makes the act meaningless and appears showing off
      2. The media does not let their voice be heard – ever thought of THAT??? Duh! When people who DON'T want muslims to be heard control the media what can muslims do?

And I could "challenge" you to "outlove" a humanist. See how silly such a challenge is? No group has the market cornered on love, compassion, dignity, and respect. Love because it's the right thing to do, not because you have something to prove.

    • HRoach

Yes you do hear about churches being burned down in the Middle East and North Africa occasionally but what you don't usually hear is the backround story or about the other 99% of Muslims and Christians who get along and interact normally on a daily basis. You also don't get to see the show of support that they give each other. Having lived in Egypt for a long time before and after the revolution, I can tell you that I have seen incredible moments where the two religions have protected one another including times when Al-Azhar, that you talk about, has openly supported the Christians as well as educating Sunnis, Shi'as and Christians all within the confines of their university. Thats just some of what you don't see on the news but just because you don't see it doesn't mean that these types of things aren't happening.

      August 9, 2012 at 8:23 pm |
    • RedWhite&Blue

You are wrong. When the Copts church was attacked last year, Muslims stood in a circle around the church to protect it. Muslims have protected churches, synagogues and temples. There are monasteries and churches that have existed and are still standing since Islam came about. Go to the Holy land and see for yourself the churches that were protected under Muslim rule for over 1400 until Israel took over. On the hand, go to Spain, and see the mosques that were reshaped to be churches or destroyed by the Inquisition.

If this were a Shiite mosque and there is proof that it was arson, then there is a high probability that the arsonist was a Sunni Muslim. And vice-versa if it were a Sunni mosque.

But to date, arson has not been listed as a cause.
