First on CNN: Atheist group targets presidential candidates' faith with billboards

By Dan Merica, CNN

Washington (CNN) - A prominent atheist group is using next month's Democratic National Convention to take aim at the presidential candidates' religion, putting up billboards targeting Mormonism and Christianity in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“Our political system is rife with religion and it depends too much on religion and not enough on substance," said David Silverman, president of American Atheists, sponsor of the ads.

"Religion is silly and religion has components that are inherently divisive. … There is no place for any of that in the political system,” he said.

The billboards go up Monday in Charlotte and will stay up for a month at a cost of roughly $15,000. The Democratic convention runs September 3-6.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

The billboard targeting Christianity features an image of Jesus Christ on toast and this description of the faith: "Sadistic God; Useless Savior, 30,000+ Versions of ‘Truth,’ Promotes Hates, Calls it ‘Love.’ ”

The billboard targeting Mormonism lambastes - and, Mormons would say, distorts - specific Mormon doctrines: "God is a Space Alien, Baptizes Dead People, Big Money, Big Bigotry.”

The Mormon billboard features a man in white underwear, a reference to special Mormon garments.

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

Both billboards feature the line "Atheism: Simply Reasonable."

American Atheists had wanted to put the anti-Mormon billboard in Tampa, Florida, to coincide with the Republican National Convention there later this month. Presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney is a Mormon. When no billboard company in the city would lease the group space for such a sign, Silverman said the organization decided to focus solely on the Democrats in Charlotte.

“Presidential conventions are for ideas, not ideology - platforms, not platitudes," Silverman said. "If a person believes stupid things, we have every right to question his or her judgment, and that directly impacts how the nonreligious voter votes.”

CNN Belief Blog: Atheist leader hopes to mobilize closeted nonbelievers

Some religious leaders said the billboards showed a misunderstanding of how faith works.

"That billboard makes the most common high-school error when it comes to atheism," wrote the Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit priest and author, in an e-mail to CNN. "It's not arguing against the existence of God, but against religion. The American Atheists need to go back to school on this one."

Martin also questioned the language used on the billboard: "And as for 'promoting hate' they're doing a bang-up job themselves with that billboard."

Terryl Givens, a Mormon professor at the University of Richmond, called American Atheists "petty and vindictive."

“If this example of adolescent silliness is what atheists mean by being reasonable, then neither Mormons nor other Christians have much to worry about," he said of the billboards. "When atheists organize to serve the poor and needy of the world, they will be taken more seriously."

CNN Belief Blog: Unbelieving preachers 'come out' as atheists

It's not the first time the American Atheists group has released in-your-face billboards. Earlier this year, the group put up two billboards in heavily Muslim and Jewish enclaves in New Jersey and New York bearing messages in Arabic and Hebrew.

“You know it’s a myth … and you have a choice,” the billboards said. At the time, Silverman said the signs were intended to reach atheists in Muslim and Jewish areas who may feel isolated because they are surrounded by believers.

In addition to the billboards, Silverman said his group plans to stage protests at both conventions.

An incredibly soulful performance of a great rock song that seeks to bridge the gap between Hinduism and Christianity is not proof that god exists. Or maybe it is....

Hinduism and Christianity have nothing in common. This song has a beat to make one dance and clap, but it has no spiritual value nor meaning to a Christian who knows Lord Jesus Christ.

When you succeed in stamping out god, you will have destroyed mankind's humanity. Man will be nothing more than a meaningless animal, living out a meaningless existence on a meaningless rock in a meaningless solar system in a meaningless galaxy, lost in the meaningless confines of a meaningless eternity. Luckily, you cannot stamp out god. He is a cosmic c.ockroach. The ultimate survivor. When there is nothing, he still will be. Smiling and creating reality anew. He is the mysteries the scientific method cannot explain. The source of being. The source of pleasure. The source of pain. Is it not wonderful to feel these things?

You are free to define god in your psuedo-pantheistic way. Believe what you wish. But don't try to force others to believe it.

So without god your entire universe is meaningless? Your wife, your child, compassion, love have no meaning or value without your god’s stamp of approval? I feel very sorry for you. You must have a fantastically small and empty life if the only thing that fills it is your imaginary friend.

My life as an atheist has much more meaning and is much richer than it ever was when I was a christian.

TR6, without God you would not know, nor would you value the things you say you cherish.
Your sin is in ascribing them to yourself, and not God, whose alone are those attributes, which you claim for yourself.
It is like stealing someone copyright.... You know the penalty for doing so!
How much more it will be for those who think these attributes are theirs and don't give credit to the One to whom they belong, but have claimed for themselves, as being theirs....
When you stand before God your Maker naked and wretched in your own righteousness, then you will see what you in yourself really are, and how much you needed Christ's righteousness, whom you have refused and spurned in your own pride. You'll remember every word of those who warned you, whom you ridiculed and mocked for telling you the truth. I pray that God will shake you up, so that you have time and space to recover yourself, before is too late .

Yeshua demonstrated compassion and social justice. He healed thousands and rebuked the rich religious.
He taught the depairing helpless to hope in the good Father who cares.
He promised more life, new life, in a world without lies, without pride or decay.
He promised to recode and reboot the universe so that all hardware would run on forever, including our bodies.
He blessed those who were killing him.
He invites every person to the sublime upgrade to come, pays for and guarantees it with his blood.
His students all vouched for his witness with their blood.
Now why in the world would you curse such a man?

      2357 –
"Yeshua demonstrated compassion and social justice. He healed thousands and rebuked the rich religious."
      -Unsubstantiated.

"He taught the depairing helpless to hope in the good Father who cares."
-Explain how god "cares". He kills thousands of innocents (including children) each day. He allows the perpetration of numerous horrors, some in his name. He has never demonstonably stepped in to prove his presence and right a wrong. Furthermore, he explicitly orders atrocities (including the before-mentioned murder of innocent children) in the bible. You maintain that he has the power to destroy all evil if he wants, yet he chooses to do nothing. This would make him an @sshole at best. Either way, doesn't seem loving and caring to me.

"He promised more life, new life, in a world without lies, without pride or decay."
-There is no evidence that anything comes after death.

"He promised to recode and reboot the universe so that all hardware would run on forever, including our bodies."
      -What?

"He blessed those who were killing him."
      -Unsubstantiated.

"Now why in the world would you curse such a man?"
-No one curses him. We just maintain that there is no reason to believe he is a deity. That's all.

      Yeshua the Messiah says:
"I and the Father are one" and
"No one comes to the Father except through me."

No one can actually know the person of God except through Yeshua His Son, the holy One of Israel, author of life, maker and owner of all creation.

That he died to validate his statements, and that the Father allowed the killing, is a truly fearsome sign of things to come. Please set aside the biases beneath your rejection, and read the things Yeshua actually said. Get to know his humble character. He wants to give you ALL the blessings of God, and you don't even have to go to a church! (best part, I admit)

God is in the process of killing everyone, true. And it's well deserved since we are born despising him. But here we are, there's still a bit of time. Our life is spirit, pneuma, the indestructable breath of God. He breathed us out in the beginning, and He inhales us all back in. But not all of us desire to return to him. He paid for our way of return with the blood of his child. It's the greatest possible suffering known to man, when your child is killed. If we reject that offer it's true insult warranting vengeance. Suffering is mandated by God for every one of us. It's sole existence is to point to the suffering of God himself at the crucifixion. He's listening for your response, every single day. Why would you dismiss him?

Conversely, you can opt to answer my questions if you don't have much of an argument of your own. The only thing I ask for is total intellectual honesty. Even four years ago I would have engaged with you in laying out "arguments for belief". But since my conversion I've realized that true faith and true conversion are NOT the result of rational thinking. The uttermost rational thinking can only result in materialist objectivism. Faith is Jesus is a supernatural phenomenon that must be performed by God himself. "the words that I say to you are spirit, and they are life" All we can and should do, is hear his actual words with a humbled heart. Do Not go to a church – churches are FULL of distraction and many stop following Jesus BECAUSE of church. Follow along with him, alone, to the cross. If your heart rebels, you must tame it. Sin crouches at the door. May the Lord have compassion on you, as you walk and talk to him in the loneliest place.

If atheists are so sure that the God of Abraham doesnt exist, why to they hate Him so much?

You surely wont find me spewing invective on Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu sites.. why? I just don't care, their beliefs aren't threatening to me in any way shape or form.
If a particular group comes out with a public policy that I object to, I'll fight it in the legislative arena. They can believe whatever they want.. I couldn't care less.

Now, before you start with "We dont hate God, we hate you Christians shoving your morality down our throats", consider:
    1. Your attacks are specifically against the existence of God and His Son.
    2. As moral relativists you feel that EVERY rule, of any kind, imposes someones opinion on someone else.. There are no absolutes in your world, everything is opinion, so it's absurd to make a claim that ONLY a specific group is imposing their viewpiont.. in your world, EVERY law is an imposition of a viewpoint.

Atheists hate the God of Abraham because He's the only one that is real..

HS, your book of nasty AKA the bible is also full of other fine instructions like these purportedly from your vicious, hateful sky fairy, so good thing more people don't follow the instructions in that book of horrors:

      Numbers 31:17-18
17 Now kiII all the boys. And kiII every woman who has slept with a man,
18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

Deuteronomy 13:6 – “If your brother, your mother’s son or your son or daughter, or the wife you cherish, or your friend who is as your own soul entice you secretly, saying, let us go and serve other gods … you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first against him to put him to death”

Revelations 2:23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

Note that the bible is also very clear that you should sacrifice and burn an animal today because the smell makes sicko Christian sky fairy happy. No, you don't get to use the parts for food. You burn them, a complete waste of the poor animal.

Yes, the bible really says that, everyone. Yes, it's in Leviticus, look it up. Yes, Jesus purportedly said that the OT commands still apply. No exceptions. But even if you think the OT was god's mistaken first go around, you have to ask why a perfect, loving enti-ty would ever put such horrid instructions in there. If you think rationally at all, that is.

And then, if you disagree with my interpretation, ask yourself how it is that your "god" couldn't come up with a better way to communicate than a book that is so readily subject to so many interpretations and to being taken "out of context", and has so many mistakes in it. Pretty pathetic god that you've made for yourself.

So get out your sacrificial knife or your nasty sky creature will torture you eternally. Or just take a closer look at your foolish supersti-tions, understand that they are just silly, and toss them into the dustbin with all the rest of the gods that man has created.

Ask the questions. Break the chains. Join the movement. Be free of Christianity and other superstitions.

      @Chad,

Your understanding is limited to say the least. Atheists are NOT moral relativists. Atheists absolutely believe laws are necessary. The main difference is that we believe there is a big difference between laws that address people causing harm to one another, or harm to themselves, versus laws that are simply morality plays out of someone's belief in what is "right", often driven by their religious beliefs. Can't you see how big a leap you're taking when it comes to people's individual rights?

@chad "utter nonsense on two levels:
      A. atheists are by DEFINITION moral relativists as they do not believe in absolute standards of morality.. read the definition 😉
      B. atheists engage in this non-stop attempt to portray any law they dont like, as an imposition of ones morality on another.

that is nonsense, because as I said in the root post

As moral relativists you feel that EVERY rule, of any kind, imposes someones opinion on someone else.. There are no absolutes in your world, everything is opinion, so it's absurd to make a claim that ONLY a specific group is imposing their viewpiont.. in your world, EVERY law is an imposition of a viewpoint.

Atheists hate the God of Abraham because He's the only one that is real..

Only your version of the God of Abraham though right? The Jews are wrong because they don't believe in Jesus, and the Muslims are wrong because they don't believe he was the son of "the God of Abraham".

for all you atheists that want to somehow dodge the intrinsic association of atheism with moral relativism, see below from asktheatheist .co m

as well, note that atheists seek to impose a relative moral code on others, so please stop saying "Christians need to stop attempting to impose their morals on us atheists", because you do the same thing, it is just an imposition of a relative code..

Now to answer your questions directly:
      1. relative (non-absolute) morals are still morals and still have worth and can still be supported. Same with laws, so anarchy is not necessary.
      2. Relativists can and do agree on laws by examining their relative merit and picking what appear to be the best ones.

Moral relativism, in the sense your theist means, is the opposite of moral absolutism. Your theist thinks that God has set certain moral absolutes for us, which are supported by His divine authority, and without these no moral judgement can be supported – even the judgement that child r ape is bad and should be punished.

Without being assured of the existence of a particular god as described in some religion, there’s no way to know what the universe’s absolute morals are, if any. This is the relativist position: the moral absolutes are either unknown or non-existent and therefore irrelevant. In their place, we use very similar moral codes – most codes condemn murder and dishonesty, value generosity and compas sion and so forth – but we support them with things besides gods: history, the law, basic human empathy, the reasoning of philosophers (including some religious ones), abstract principles like reciprocity and the minimisation of harm and so on.

Chad, even if you had a statistical analysis that could measure the occurances of athiest on Christian/Jew opposition as compared to athiest on anyone else opposition, your proposed correlation would not make your particular belieif system any more valid. I used the term 'racist' because of your calling out of specific religions that are almost exclusively practiced by brown people in other countrys and saying you just don't care about Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu beliefs as if they don't even get a seat at your white Christian table of religions to debate.

As an atheist, I do reject your God as well as their God's since there is zero proof of any of them existing, but I do not discount their beliefs and coulture as you do. All religions are equal to me, none having proven itself greater or more valid than any other. I try to love the believers but hate the belief.

"If atheists are so sure that the God of Abraham does not exist, why to they hate Him so much?'
Because their hatred is of spiritual origin. They themselves don't even know why, but they do. They do the works of their father whom they serve, while he makes them believe that they are free!
It is really not hard to understand, but those which God turned over to reprobate minds are not able to see, because the father of lies has blinded the eyes of their hearts and confused their minds! Their pride is their doom, just like lucifer's was!

HS, don't forget the nasty bits in your book of horrors AKA the bible too. Just to cite a few of the many nasty bits that you are so conveniently not presenting:

Dana, Tom Tom is 1000% correct. It doesn't have anything to do with being good. Being good is something we all do, we don't need a God to do good. The religious use it to get control, that's it, nothing more.

Bob, I will answer you, just so you won't say I ignored you. But I sense the spirit i which you wrote your post, and hav no desire to spend my last hours of my evening writing a post to someone who's gonna trash it. I knwo what the Bible says, I know how God dealt with His peopel Israel and the nations that surrounded them. I know what Bible teaches in OT and NT. But my spending time in writing in depth posts is reserved for those which God points out to me, and I see something in their posts that draws me to them, to write to them of deep things of God which the world and it's people who are walking in darkness can never understand. So, I will just say to you, if you seek God with all your heart you will find Him, and He will reveal to you things you'd never understand on your own. He ways are not our ways, and His thought s ar not our thoughts. HE IS THE LORD. We are His creation. Unless you humble yourself before Him, and see your need for Him, and His righteousness in Christ Jesus His son, you will live your life in darkness and pass on to the next one INTO darkness, apart from Him who created you, into the hands of the enemy of your soul, the one who deceived you and whose servant you were in this life, even though you thought you were free... That's all, my time is up...have a good night!

Unless you can provide a convincing rational argument that supports your position I will continue to believe that even if George Washington was a rabid bible thumper (and evidence proves otherwise) he was still wrong about god's existence.

Prism, I'll ignore your personal attacks and drag you back to the facts. Again, here is what your book of nasty AKA the bible says, so deal with it or go away a coward such as you have already shown yourself to be:

Exlonghorn, you asked "What exactly do you think an Atheist would hope to accomplish by cursing at something that they believe doesn't exist"

There will come a time in not – so – far future when God will deal OPENLY with mankind, and no one will be able to deny that the things which will happen are not "just happening".
According to the signs of the times we're living in, this generation of young people will see it.
There is a war on horizon, but not the kind nations ever fought against one another.
You can laugh like the others do, but when it happens , remember that you were told ahead of time!
The wicked and unrighteous will grow more vile, but the righteous whose righteousness is in Lord Christ, will understand, but the wicked will NOT understand, and will go like dumb herds of beasts to the slaughter ...
Let God's people rest in their trust in Him, but let the wicked be exposed for who they are. That's what the Spirit of the Lord is saying to this generation people, so those who have ears to hear may awake out of their slumber, but the rest... let them lullabye themselves even deeper in their sedated slumber!

      @Truth is good
Jesus said to follow the law of the old testament ALL OF IT. He also said the most difficult path is the one that leads to heaven. Pretending that you are no longer bound by the law of the Old Testament is the easy path to hell

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven."Matthew 5:17-19

"Heaven and earth will disappear before the smallest letter of the Law does." Luke 16:17 (CEV)

What part of “UNTIL HEAVEN AND EARTH DISAPPEAR” don’t you understand?

      August 16, 2012 at 2:18 pm |
    • PRISM 1234

Since Jesus fulfilled the law, He has freed us from the Letter of the law... In Old Testament God's people had to go by the letter of the law, but in the New Testament the laws of God are written on our hearts by the Spirit of God, who has sealed us unto the day of redemption, and who gives us the power to live godly lives, in this fulfilling the laws of God. Because on our own selves we can not do any good thing, but it is Him who does it in and through us, so that no flesh should glory before God , but all glory belongs to Him alone – Amen!
