First on CNN: Atheist group targets presidential candidates' faith with billboards

By Dan Merica, CNN

Washington (CNN) - A prominent atheist group is using next month's Democratic National Convention to take aim at the presidential candidates' religion, putting up billboards targeting Mormonism and Christianity in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“Our political system is rife with religion and it depends too much on religion and not enough on substance," said David Silverman, president of American Atheists, sponsor of the ads.

"Religion is silly and religion has components that are inherently divisive. … There is no place for any of that in the political system,” he said.

The billboards go up Monday in Charlotte and will stay up for a month at a cost of roughly $15,000. The Democratic convention runs September 3-6.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

The billboard targeting Christianity features an image of Jesus Christ on toast and this description of the faith: "Sadistic God; Useless Savior, 30,000+ Versions of ‘Truth,’ Promotes Hates, Calls it ‘Love.’ ”

The billboard targeting Mormonism lambastes - and, Mormons would say, distorts - specific Mormon doctrines: "God is a Space Alien, Baptizes Dead People, Big Money, Big Bigotry.”

The Mormon billboard features a man in white underwear, a reference to special Mormon garments.

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

Both billboards feature the line "Atheism: Simply Reasonable."

American Atheists had wanted to put the anti-Mormon billboard in Tampa, Florida, to coincide with the Republican National Convention there later this month. Presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney is a Mormon. When no billboard company in the city would lease the group space for such a sign, Silverman said the organization decided to focus solely on the Democrats in Charlotte.

“Presidential conventions are for ideas, not ideology - platforms, not platitudes," Silverman said. "If a person believes stupid things, we have every right to question his or her judgment, and that directly impacts how the nonreligious voter votes.”

CNN Belief Blog: Atheist leader hopes to mobilize closeted nonbelievers

Some religious leaders said the billboards showed a misunderstanding of how faith works.

"That billboard makes the most common high-school error when it comes to atheism," wrote the Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit priest and author, in an e-mail to CNN. "It's not arguing against the existence of God, but against religion. The American Atheists need to go back to school on this one."

Martin also questioned the language used on the billboard: "And as for 'promoting hate' they're doing a bang-up job themselves with that billboard."

Terryl Givens, a Mormon professor at the University of Richmond, called American Atheists "petty and vindictive."

“If this example of adolescent silliness is what atheists mean by being reasonable, then neither Mormons nor other Christians have much to worry about," he said of the billboards. "When atheists organize to serve the poor and needy of the world, they will be taken more seriously."

CNN Belief Blog: Unbelieving preachers 'come out' as atheists

It's not the first time the American Atheists group has released in-your-face billboards. Earlier this year, the group put up two billboards in heavily Muslim and Jewish enclaves in New Jersey and New York bearing messages in Arabic and Hebrew.

“You know it’s a myth … and you have a choice,” the billboards said. At the time, Silverman said the signs were intended to reach atheists in Muslim and Jewish areas who may feel isolated because they are surrounded by believers.

In addition to the billboards, Silverman said his group plans to stage protests at both conventions.

This issue is only getting more and more bloated as time goes on. Why does the personal beliefs of individuals have to be a political issue? You believe in a god? Great! You don't? Great! As Thomas Jefferson once said "it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg."
Are people so insecure about their beliefs, OR lack thereof, that they have to critisize those who disagree, and make a political issue out of it? Are you so terrified of those who think differently than you, that you have to try to indocrinate their children right out from under them? Just look at some of these comments. Half of you are using a cnn opinion article comment section as a bilboard for your religious bliefs? Really? No wonder we our society has become so divisive.

This post is for the person out there that is struggling with something or has questions about God.
Step 1 – Take the Roman road outlined below in order. If you don't own a Bible, google the verses.
It will be the most important road you have ever traveled.

    1. Romans 3:10
    2. Romans 3:23
    3. Romans 5:8
    4. Romans 5:12
    5. Romans 6:23
    6. Romans 10:9-11
    7. Romans 10:13

Step 2 – Say the following prayer, "Lord, I know I am an sinner and I'm sorry for all the bad things I have done.
Lord Jesus, come into my heart and be the Lord of my life."

Step 3 – Did you say the prayer in step 2 and believe with all your heart? If so, welcome to the family of God!
If not, that's ok, please cut and paste these steps into a file on your computer for a later time when you are ready.
Please let me know if you completed this step by sending an email to iacceptedjesustoo@yahoo.com. It is very important to tell someone even if you don't send the email.

Step 4 – Now it's time to start reading the Word of God. Purchase a Bible if you can, if not, search the web for
free online Bibles – there are many! Start reading the New Testament – I recommend starting with 1 John, 2 John, and 3 John
then Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John. Make reading the Bible something you do each and every day! This is a
    very important step!

Step 5 – Find a church and start attending as often as you can. Volunteer your to help out when you are able.
It's important to worship with other people. Begin to seek out Christian friends.

A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs.

there are no gods but it's perfectly ok for people to wallow in delusional thinking – they can believe in whatever imaginary friends they choose.

the problem is when they attempt to dictate their morals onto the rest of society and work overtime to secularize their ridiculous theology.

there should be new legislation bringing punitive measures against those religious organizations and idiot moralists who seek to deprive others of their liberties, freedom, and equality. those very people deserve no freedom, liberty, or equality.

tolerance of religious idiocy has to end.

There is a God. There is a heaven. And there is a hell. After all, without atheists, there'd be no need for hell…

And as soon as atheists breathe their last breath they're going to find that out…

    November 6, 2012 at 10:37 am |

my husband trully believes in heaven and hell, and I do not. I cannot pretend. But, we all should be tolerant of each others beliefs, regardless, whether there is a god or not. There is no way to prevent someones beliefs from effecting their choices, so when voting you must pick the person that you believe is more tolerant. Then all of the believers and non-believers are represented....

So let's think about religion for a minute. There's a man that's running for president that has a pretty good shot at getting in office. He wears "magical underwear", (ok they're temple garments but Mormons wear them all the time.). The founder of the Mormons, Joseph Smith. claims to have been visited by god, and given gold plates with history written on them.
Now do we REALLY want this guy running the country??? One step further...ALL religion is just as absurd as Mormonism. Stop the madness and WAKE UP!

      b) You don't either.

You just look stupid, and sadistic. And honestly almost every person ive read in this comment section that beleives in a deity, you all sound pretty stupid. And some sound pretty sadistic. Some I couldnt bother myself with the idiocy of the entire comment and found myself skipping them. Everything you people say about your beleifs is a waste of time, breath, effort, existence.

"without atheists, there'd be no need for hell"...what a ridiculous statement. Setting aside the whole atheism vs theism debate, that statement is patently absurd. If there is a hell, there are plenty of believers in it. According to Dante, you can even find Pope Boniface VIII there. I suspect he isn't the only Pope in Hell.

Atheism (A-Theism) is simply another religion : It expresses certainty about that which is NOT known and which can never BECOME known. . Put another way, the destructive element of Theism (Any and ALL religions) is their claim that THEY are right and everyone else is wrong. . NO completely SANE person can EVER make such a claim.

An Agnostic simply admits that he/she DOES NOT and CAN NOT know. . He/she does not need pretty, elaborate trappings and rituals in order to do the RIGHT things toward his/her fellow man. . He/she has a functioning, full -featured CONSCIENCE, that is, he/she has a SOUL ! ! !

Religious belief is a choice. Science is observation. If people choose to believe in something unseen, that's their business. The sad thing is that Atheists refuse to allow people a choice. Atheists want to be the God of This Earth. Atheists are unique thieves of the only hope that millions of people have and need just to get through the day. Atheists are working hard to take away something and give nothing in return. Atheism is Nothing. Pure and simple.

Are a-theists only against the Judeo-Christian concept of God or do they take issue with other philosophies as well?

You said, "Are a-theists only against the Judeo-Christian concept of God or do they take issue with other philosophies as well?"
Most atheists I know aren't "against" the concept of any god anymore than that they are against the concept of the Tooth Fairy. The thing that most atheists are against is the believers expecting others to buy into their nonsense as well.

You, and everyone else, have the right to believe whatever you want. It is when you expect me to live by whatever rules your religion imposes on you. If you keep that obvious bullshit out of my life, you won't hear from me.

In my experience reading the many comments written on web opinion forums, EVERY SINGLE person claiming to be an Atheist exclusively attacked Christian beliefs and Jewish beliefs. I have never read an Atheist complaining about any other religion.
Supposedly, an "atheist" is defined as "someone who does not believe in God or gods", but the real and actual working definition used by Atheists is, "Complete and Active opposition to anything related to the Christian faith."
They like to pretend that they are neutral, but they are anything BUT neutral. In fact, many government organizations, such as prisons, define and treat atheism like any other religion.

      @Ordinary Average American

You said, "In my experience reading the many comments written on web opinion forums, EVERY SINGLE person claiming to be an Atheist exclusively attacked Christian beliefs and Jewish beliefs."
I suspect that is because you limit yourself to articles that deal with christianity or jewish beliefs.

You said, "I have never read an Atheist complaining about any other religion."
Maybe you should look at some of the articles on the Belief Blog that deal with other religions. While the discussion tends to be shorter, atheists deride those beliefs as silly, too.

You said, "Supposedly, an "atheist" is defined as "someone who does not believe in God or gods", but the real and actual working definition used by Atheists is, "Complete and Active opposition to anything related to the Christian faith.""
It may seems so in the US. The reason is not that atheists only go after the silly beliefs of christians, but because christianity is the dominant delusion in this country. There are very few people trying to force hinduism or any other religion on the rest of us.

You said, "They like to pretend that they are neutral, but they are anything BUT neutral."
Atheism, by its very definition is neutral. Not believing in imaginary creatures places all of them on the same playing field. There is no difference between Allah, Yahweh, Mithra, the Tooth Fairy, the Abominable Snowman, or any other mythical creature.

You said, "In fact, many government organizations, such as prisons, define and treat atheism like any other religion."
It's the freedom to believe, or not believe that is treated equally. The fact that atheists are protected to not participate in the mass hysteria, doesn't mean atheism is a religion.

So you're agnostic? Not a-theist? It is the dogma that offends, not the possibility that we are ignorant and can neither prove nor disprove the existence of a creator?

      November 5, 2012 at 6:51 pm |
    • LinCA

You said, "So you're agnostic? Not a-theist?"
Being agnostic and atheist are not mutually exclusive.

Gnosticism and agnosticism are about knowledge, or the lack thereof. Theism and atheism are about belief, or the lack thereof. I don't know whether there are any gods, thus I'm agnostic. But because there is no evidence to suggest there are any, I have no reason to believe they do. I have no reason to believe, so I don't and thus I'm atheist.

You said, "It is the dogma that offends, not the possibility that we are ignorant and can neither prove nor disprove the existence of a creator?"
You are free to believe whatever you want. I couldn't care less. As long as you keep it to yourself, you won't hear from me.

Every single living human being is a miracle in itself. The Earth itself is a miracle, with all that is living upon it, for all it would take is an Earth tilted a few degrees too much or a slight change in distance from the Sun, and all life on Earth would end.
For some reason, all the planets rotate in the exact same pattern every year for thousands of years, without any change in the pattern. For some reason, all the planets keep the same orbit. For some reason, the moon circles the Earth in exactly the same pattern at the same rate, day after day, century after century....
The Atheist explains it all by "chance" and "coincidence".
I would say that it requires 100% blind faith for someone to close their eyes and close their mind, and believe that it all happened by "evolution" or by "chance".

      November 4, 2012 at 9:57 pm |
    • Logic

ordinary. the theory of gravity can explain planetary movements, if you cared to learn. and just fyi, the "rate" the moon orbits changes depending on where it is in its orbit. just because some things are beyond your understanding, does not mean you should quit trying to understand, and concluded that something more powerful did it.

Also, the earths tilt does change, slightly over time. sort of oscillating back and forth. the distance from the sun varies some 3 million miles, depending on where it is in its orbit. science does not claim to know all the answers. it only tries to answer them. it is not a hardened postion, but rather a constant search for truth. dont be afraid to open your mind.

I just wanted the ask the people that believe evolution to be a hoax to explain with specifics, why it is a faulty theory because I have honestly been searching for a legitmiate argument against it, but no one ever provides one. All I ever here is it is a faulty theory or there is no way to explain life that way or other people have argued against it, but I have never quite heard a legitimate argument. I find this strange because there are many issues such as abortion where both sides present interesting, coherent arguments in favor or opposition, but I will continue to wait for a similiar argument against evolution. If any one really can refute it, then please respond to this comment with you counter argument.

      Evolution is a lie:
1/ Evolution begins and ends with a hopelessly illogical premise; Nothing + Chance= Everything! What created the matter necessary to create the universe or "big-bang?"
2/ The theory of evolution says that some 3.5 billion years ago (subtract or add a billion) there was a large inorganic soup composed of nitrogen, ammonia, salts and C02 began to bubble away and arose the first single cell algae.
3/ The person who believes in evolution does not have any clue where did inorganic soup came from or how it formed from non-living matter.
4/ Biogenesis is the basic axiom of biology. Biogenesis means that life only arises from life. It does not come from non-living matter.
5/ DNA is absolutely essential for life to exist. But DNA can only be produced by life. How, when no life existed, did DNA come into existence? We also know that we have inherited our parents DNA, so how can a individual who believes in evolution logical think that our ancient ancestors were primates or tadpoles?
6/ I believe in God's account of creation that is stated in Genesis chapter 1 as the only true scientific, logical and reasonable basis of how the LORD made the heavens, earth and all living things on it.
7/ I strongly suspect that over the past 40 years or so that many of our teachers were instructed by godless, athesitic professors and thus started this indoctrination of the false idea that there is no God. And the belief of humanism began creeping into our colleges and universities.
8/ Replace God with the idea that man is god. This idea started all the way back with Nimrod and the "Tower of Babel".
Thanks for listening and may God bless you with reason, logic and scientific knowledge to know that the LORD God Almighty is the Intelligent Designer, not Charles Darwin or your college prof...

The Atheist is always looking for a way to believe the impossible: evolution, for example.
In 1912, Arthur Woodward announced to the world that he had found the missing link between ape and man. Piltdown Man, as he called it, consisted of a jaw bone and a piece of skull which he estimated to be over 500,000 years old! However, in 1953, when the new fluoride dating process was applied to the bones, scientists were shocked to learn that the jaw bone was less than 50 years old. Only then did they notice that the bones and teeth had been treated with salts and filed to make them appear old and primitive. In other words, Piltdown Man was a complete fraud. Take note Bible student! The world's foremost scientific experts had been fooled for over 40 years! (Read 1 Corinthians 3:18-20.) For almost a half century, evolutionists pushed Piltdown Man in the faces of Bible believers as scientific proof we evolved from apes! Some proof!
Everyone has "evidence". Otherwise, all court hearings would last less than 10 minutes.
There are two sides to this issue, and the non-evolutionists have a lot of significant arguments. I could write about them all day long, but let's be brief.
Even slight changes in DNA from one generation to the next causes severe health problems and often sterility and usually ends the line.
A good argument against evolution answers the question: Why do we have different kinds of dogs?

A similar question is: Why does there appear to be different races of people?
Answer: It's not evolution. DNA didn't 'change'. From one generation to another, a gene may be subtracted, but never added. Different dogs have some different genes, but it is not because genes evolved into other genes.
And the fossils? -inconclusive. There are examples of unethical "scientists" collecting different bones ( of people or apes) across a mile of distance, and assembling them like leggos, and then claiming that this new Frankenstein is an ancient human.. There are other example of unprofessional conduct by these frauds.
There are many books on this subject written by extremely smart PhD- types.
There are two sides to this debate.

@ordinary,significant mutations usually do cause death. Other times they cause survivable illness or shortened life. It is the rare mutation that is a benefit, but that mutation is the heart of evolution. The species survived despite so many mutations because a) usually a severly mutated embryo is aborted spontaneously, allowing the mother to produce more offspring and b) umtil recently women gave birth to enough children to replace both themselves and their partners despite high pregnancy and child losses.

There's no need for conflict. The Bible teaches that God made everything. Everything includes scientific processes. That's what's so marvelous about God. His miraculous creation is here to be studied by scientists so they can marvel at its complexity. Dinosaurs? I got no problem with your dinosaurs. Evolution? I got no problem with your evolution. Ain't God awesome? He created evolution! Dig it! The world's only 10,000 years old? Now that, I have a problem with!

Atheists are always pretending that they are using "science", instead of philosophy or religion, when they are bashing Christians. The truth is that atheists never cared that much about science. For example: Darwinism is full of hoaxes and imagination. Evolution has so many holes in it, that it cannot hold any water at all when openly debated. The Atheist Global Warming fake scientists and Earth Worshippers used made-up data to form their made-up conclusions, purely for money, for political power, and for the purpose of pushing their other social-engineering strategies, such as euthanasia.

Atheism is officially a “religion” in American prisons and other places. Yet, the atheists attack anything that someone for any belief or any opinion that sounds like it came from the Bible.

    October 23, 2012 at 7:49 pm |
    • Ordinary Average American

All of these things can be debated. In the end, the individual has to determine what he believes. Creationists believe that God created everything, and Evolutionists believe that dust floating around came together perfectly by coincidence, forming the first cell with its own internal organs, and a lightning bolt jump-started it. Atheists simply replaced the word "God" with the word, "Evolution", and just continued saying the exact same thing. In other words, "Evolution" itself is a god. "Science" has very little to do with it. Evolution has become the Atheists’ god. They believe in it, but you cannot prove it, when there is someone else debating with them.
There are probably thousands of semi-scientific books on Evolution, and there are equally-truthful and equally-scientific books proving Evolution is a big hoax.

The link http://www.svbc.ab.ca/evidence-god/ explains why it is important we honor God at ALL times. The world around was introduced to Christianity by the founding fathers of this great nation. Saudi Arabia prohibits freedom of religion except for Moslems – but some of the biggest mosques are built in the US and they are the number one reason for terrorism in the US and around the world. If this was about banning the Quran's verses from being displayed, there would have been such a huge uproar. But since this is the Bible – not a big deal. I applaud the high school students who publicly displayed their Christian faith at such a young age. Texas truly comprises the Bible belt of the US!! Look around the world – those regions that openly accept Christianity are doing well today for the most part, those that don't – not much to say there. Look at Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Philippines – does terrorism reign here? I'm afraid so!

  17. Kindness

This is my experience... Thank you.

    MY personal testimony.
A thought to consider without an ego response

I Accepted Jesus christ as my lord and saviour. You never know how soon is too late. Transcend the worldly illusion of enslavement.
    The world denounces truth....

Accepting Jesus Christ (for me) resulted in something like seeng a new colour. You will see it .....but will not be able to clearly explain it to anyone else..... Its meant to be that way to transend any selfism within you.

Also... much the world arranges "surrounding dark matter into something to be debated" in such a way that protects/inflates the ego.

The key is be present and transcend our own desire to physically see evidence. We don't know anyways by defending our own perception of dark matter.

Currently.... most of us are constructing our own path that suits our sin lifestyle. Were all sinners. Knowing that we are is often an issue. But both christians and non are sinners. Even once we are saved by christs merciful grace we will still experience adversity to mold us to adhering to the truth.
We will slip... But not fall of the ship ...carrying us onward to perfection in christs grace.

We don't like to Let go and let god. We want control to some degree. This is what Jesus asks us to do. "Follow me".
It's the hardest thing to do... but is done by letting the truth of scripture lead you (redemptive revelation)... as I said .

Try reading corinthians and see if it makes sense to you. Try it without a pre conceived notion of it being a fairy tale.
    See the truth...
do we do what it says in todays society... is it relevant... so many have not recently read and only hinge their philosophy on what they have heard from some other person...which may have been full of arogance pride or vanity..

Look closely at the economy ponzi, look at how society idolizes Lust , greed , envy, sloth, pride of life, desire for knowledge, desire for power, desire for revencge, gluttony with food etc .

    Trancsend the temporal world.

Just think if you can find any truth you can take with you ....in any of these things. When you die your riches go to someone who will spend away your life..... You will be forgotten.... history will repeat iteslf.... the greatest minds knowledge fade or are eventually plagerzed..... your good deeds will be forgotten and only give you a fleeting temporary reward . your learned teachings are forgotten or mutated..... your gold is transfered back to the rullers that rule you through deception. Your grave will grow over . This is truth .

Trancsend your egoism and free yourself from this dominion of satan. Understand you are a sinner and part of the collective problem of this worldly matrix... Repent.... Repent means knowing (to change) The Holy spirit (within) will convict you beyond what you think you can do by yourself. Grace is given to those who renounce the world. That are" in" the world but not "of " the world.

Evidence follows faith. Faith does not follow evidence..... Faith ....above reason in Jesus Christ.

Faith comes by Reading or Hearing the word of god from the bible . Ask Jesus in faith for dicernment and start reading the new testament... You will be shocked when you lay down your preconceived notions and ....see and hear truth ... see how christ sets an example ... feel the truth....

Read Ecclesiastes. Read romans or corinthians.

You cant trancend your own egoism by adapting a world philosophy to suit your needs. Seek the truth in Christ.

Sell all your cleverness and purchase true bewilderment. You don't get what you want ....you get what you are by faith above reason in christ.

I promise this has been the truth for me. In Jesus christ .

Think of what you really have to lose. ...your ego?

Break the Matrix of illusion that holds your senses captive.

once you do . you too will have the wisdom of God that comes only through the Holy Spirit. Saved By grace through Faith. Just like seeing a new colour.... can't explain it to a transient caught in the matrix of worldly deception.
You will also see how the world suppresses this information and distorts it

You're all smart people . I tell the truth. Its hard to think out of the box when earthly thinking is the box.
I'ts a personal free experience you can do it free anytime . Don't wait till you are about to die.. START PUTTING YOUR TREASURES WHERE THEY REALLY MATTER >
Its awsome and It's just between you and Jesus

    my testimony

    Romans 10:9

"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved

Last eve I passed beside a blacksmith’s door,
    And heard the anvil ring the vesper chime;
The, looking in, I saw upon the floor
Old hammers, worn with beating years of time.
“How many anvils have you had,” said I,
“To wear and batter all these hammers so?”
“Just one,” said he, and then with twinkling eye,
“The anvil wears the hammers out, you know.”
And so, thought I, the anvil of God’s Word,
    For ages skeptic blows have beat upon;
Yet, though the noise of falling blows was heard,
The anvil is unharmed – the hammers gone.

    Truth.. Is exclusive

If an anvil wears the hammers out ....reality will eventually do the same to religion...as" reality gives no note to silliness".
The Universe...perhaps 15 billion years... pays no note to the recent and irrelevant arrival of such a fleeting fleece.
"If one confesses the nonsense of a silly ghost ......she is only "saving"....."utter nonsense"...regardless of which silliness of the more than 3000 objects of silliness that exist.......They are all silly hammers which are doomed to be "worn out" by the anvil of reality which lasts against all nonsense.

  18. Anybody know how to read?

'1Cr 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.' That statement has zip to do with a gubmint church.

  19. TheTRUTH

Atheists will say all this nonsense, then once it comes time for them to be on their deathbed theyll all of a sudden become very interested in believing in a God. haha funny how that works, they are so scared of not having a meaning in the world and once they are dead being gone forever. that is why they make these hate groups putting down christians trying to convince themselves there is no God. No they are not scared of christians coming and killing them they are scared of the God that they "dont believe in", christians are not islams we do not kill we love and live a life serving God so there is no need for these groups against christianinty because what is the need to put christians down when we are not harming you in any way? Its because atheists are in denial and have to find a way to make christianity seem ridiculous or supernatural. All the proof they need to know that there is a God is in the world around them. What a sad life it would be to have no meaning or purpose in life except to just survive so that they wont have to face the end, and the fear of not knowing what will happen once they die, id be quite scared to be honest. God gives me comfort, strength, hope, love, and peace.

Atheists don't waste their time worrying about nonsense ....particularly on their deathbeds....the delusions of silly gods are hardly the final thoughts of a reasonable mind which chooses far more wisely .....its final thoughts.

To TheMostWise... Have you ever even BEEN your deathbed? I argue not. So if you haven't ever been on your deathbed as an atheist, then you have no clue what you are talking about. So why not try talking about what you know, rather than what you only think or believe…

But if you'd like to know what an atheist thinks and feels while on their deathbed, then take it from a fellow atheist of yours who's actually been there and back. He stated his experience was "untold terror" and "a fear of going to hell"…

  20. Christian

Obviously atheists know deep down in their heart that their is something above them and better then them that is why they feel the need to reply to EVERY comment that supports religion and putt it down. Trying to talk themselves out of it and make religion feel like nonsense makes them feel better about themself and feel better about not believing in God. An atheist will always say "there is no proof" and they are right there is no proof but that is why we must have faith. i have seen so many miracles happen in my life and seen so many people's lives change from God but some people cant get past the deniance that there is something bigger than themselves and when they look around the world they have to know that something so beautiful cannot just come out of nothing and the perfection we see cannot just come out of nowhere. The stars the sun the earth and even people themselves are perfect because God made them just take a second and look around and it will speak for itself. And there is proof that Jesus lived it has been recorded so many different times and so many different primary sources and the bible was written by over 40 people that had no connection with eachother and lived on different continents in different times but somehow the bible came together and all their stories innertwined with eachother and it was all part of God's plan. Before you atheists put down christianity you should try going to church and having a relationship with God, you will be amazed

    • Religion is Not Heathly for children or ANY living things

Please explain why you think a person "needs to have faith" in something for which there is NO EVIDENCE of whatsoever, has NO logical reason or meaning, has NO benefits for keeping this illogocal "faith" and results in people who are perpetually waiting for something that will NEVER HAPPEN? It all seems quite useless and pointless and merely serves as a excuse to not take responsibility for your own life !???... This way of thinking is self-limiting and self-defeating!...

It's important to ridicule religion at every opportunity, or it might gain the illusion of credibility.

Atheists are very sad and lost souls and that is precisely why they have no peace in their heart. Atheists love to come on forums like this and to congregate and to put believers down all because it makes them feel better and "misery loves company". It's kind of like if you know you are unsaved and are going to hell. That's a chilling thought and a difficult one to live with. Therefore, to be able to live with such a thought and to have peace in your heart, atheists love to come on forums like this where they can congregate with a bunch of other atheists who are all saying the same thing that – "hell doesn't exist". And if they can get with a thousand other atheist all who are saying "there is no God" and "hell doesn't exist", then it makes them feel better and they don't have to feel so alone and be so afraid anymore. And that is precisely why they do it. It's because "misery loves company". Atheists are very sad and lost souls who don't have any peace…

Fintastic… You don't even know what "reality" is. Man is composed of 3 parts – soul, body, and spirit. The real you is your "soul", not the flesh you have on. So why are you choosing your flesh (which is the deception and the myth) rather than your soul?…

    • DavidvsGoliath

To Religion is Not Healthy… And why do people like you feel the need to come on forums like this and continuously point that out?… If you don't believe or have faith, then be happy and go about your way. Instead, you cannot get away from forums like this all because you have no faith or peace, therefore you hate people who do…

To The Schmaltz… No, it's important to ridicule religion at every opportunity because the very thought that the religious people could be right is a thought you can't handle…

Heh, that's funny. I don't rail against a deity, I rail at the ignorance spouted off by more than a few believers. I don't even care what they believe as long as they can be relatively sane about it. Sadly many of them prove that they can not do both.

You are aware that the human body is made up of way more than 3 parts, right? I choose to live this life to the best of my ability. I can not sit around waiting to die, hoping that there is some sort of afterlife. If there is, a deity should have just skipped the middle part.

      October 27, 2012 at 9:38 am |
    • DavidvsGoliath

To Domacles… It matters not how many "parts" your human body has. You still only have one body. And some day that body is going to die. And when it does, the bible says that after death comes the Judgment. Are you prepared for it?…

Hebrews 9:27 – And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

Secondly, you can live this life "to the best of your ability" all you want. That still will not save you if you have not done what Jesus said. Jesus said, "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved. But he that believeth not, shall be damned." Have you done that? If not, you will still be damned and go to hell…

Lastly, if the believers have chosen to get saved in preparation for Judgment Day (by doing what Jesus said). And you have not. Then tell me who's the ignorant one…

So if your religion is correct, that means everyone else's religion is also correct. You will undoubtedly disagree with this. Which is why when you dismiss every other religion but yours, you are also an athiest. Some people just go one god further than you do. And before you Christians put down Islam, you should go to temple and having a relationship with Allah. Sounds ridiculous, right? Now you're getting it.
