Girl held on Pakistan blasphemy charge

By Katie Hunt and Nasir Habib, CNN

(CNN) - An 11-year-old Christian girl has been arrested and detained on charges of blasphemy for allegedly desecrating pages from the Quran in the Pakistan capital Islamabad.

According to a statement released by the President's office on Sunday, the girl, identified as Ramsha, was accused by a local resident of burning pages of the Muslim holy text after she gathered paper as fuel for cooking.

Local media reports said the girl has Down syndrome. CNN was unable to confirm these reports, however Qasim Niazi, the police officer in charge of the police station near where the incident took place, said the girl did not have a mental disorder but was illiterate and had not attended school.

The accused girl had told him she had no idea there were pages of the Quran inside the documents she burnt, he added.

Niazi said that 150 people had gathered on Friday where the neighborhood's Christian population lived and threatened to burn down their houses.

"The mob wanted to burn the girl to give her a lesson," he told CNN.

Other Christian families living in the area have fled fearing a backlash, he added.

difference is, if an atheist does something terrible like that, it's not because there's an atheist handbook telling him to - he did it for reasons other than atheism. on the other hand, sometimes religious wackos do something terrible because their koran or bible or whatever religious handbook told them to. no one does evil in the name of atheism, but religious nuts do evil in the name of god.see the difference?

Adam: Yeah, we get that…but you did know! My dik’s just swingin’ on out here. Thanks for the head’s up!

    God: L…let’s move on…

Bacha bazi or playing with children in Iranian and playing with boys in Afghani, is se xual slavery and child prost itution in which prepubescent and adolescent boys are sold to wealthy or powerful men for entertainment and se xual activities. This business thrives in Afghanistan, where many men keep them as status symbols. Some of the individuals involved report being forced into se x. The authorities are barely attempting to crack down on the practice but many doubt it would be effective since many of the men are powerful and well-armed former commanders. The disenchantment of minorities including Christians is evident by the recent uprising in India. From Bangalore to Mumbai, to Goa to Kerala and Chennai and Pune not to forget Assam and onto New Delhi ..... this is a premonition of epic proportions. We are witnessing the implosion of India..some will grasp it now while others will need to see it in the rear view mirror.

      August 20, 2012 at 9:19 pm |
    • I'm not a GOPer, nor do I play one on TV

According to wikipedia it is Abner KNEELAND in 1834 under a Colonial era, Commonwealth of Massachusetts statute – from when the colony had an established church – ie a theocracy.

The disestablishment of the congregational church in Massachusetts took place in 1833. Kneeland's "crime" took place before this date.

Thankfully we live in a country where we have the right to freedom of religious expression.

The wikipedia page on disestablishment says the following:

The const'tutions of eight states (Arkansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas) also contain clauses that prohibit atheists from holding public office. However, these clauses were held by the U.S. Supreme Court to be unenforceable in the 1961 case of Torcaso v. Watkins, where the court ruled unanimously that such clauses const'tuted a religious test incompatible with the religious test prohibition in Article 6 Section 3 of the United States Const'tution.

My question got bumped when page three was added. Does anyone have a serious answer?

Why is it that the Pakistani Muslims are not punishing the owner of the burned Quran? Assuming that the text is important enough to them for this sort of draconian punishment, why isn't the owner also punished for treating it so carelessly that it was unattended in a place when an unattended child could mistake it for fire material? One would think that an item held in such reverence would be tended carefully. Anyone know the answer?

Thank you for asking the question. I will answer it. It is no secret that Hitler and his Nazi cronies sought inspiration from Indian extremist groups including the branding of his Nazi Party by adopting the Swastika, a traditionally Hindu symbol and representation of Hindu god Ganesha, as its marketing tool. The thesis being that like the Norwegian massacre, the Jewish holocaust orchestrated by Hitler was inspired by the inherently violent cult of Indian Hindus and the manifesto of its then extremist/terrorist groups still in existence today. These groups are now the successors to and carrying out the vision of Al Qaeda all over the world.

  19. Atheism is not healthy for children and other living things

    Prayer changes things

As it turns out, Atheism is wonderful for everyone! It allows you to use your mind to its fullest potential. Atheism also discourages people from hiding their misdeeds within their religion which is a disservice to society. and you know, prayer is not all it's cracked up to be. one can meditate to rest the mind. And if you need to collect your thoughts or think about someone else (a real person), then get a good cup of tea and then sit down and collect your damn thoughts – you don't need prayer to people that lawyers and politicians made up long ago. keep a strong mind and be a do bee atheist like mama kindless.

Sir, let me recommend a place for you. Bon Voyage. Do send us a post card.

At a meeting held in New Delhi on Saturday (Oct. 24), the secretary general of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, Archbishop Stanislaus Fernandes, said the rise of fundamentalism was “seriously worrying” the church in India. The meeting was held to discuss prospects for immediate enactment of federal legislation to counter religious extremism with the proposed Communal Violence (Prevention, Control and Rehabilitation of Victims) Bill.
