Bill Nye slams creationism

(CNN)–Famed TV scientist Bill Nye is slamming creationism in a new online video for Big Think titled "Creationism Is Not Appropriate For Children."

"Denial of evolution is unique to the United States," Nye begins in a YouTube video posted on Thursday.  The video quickly picked up steam over the weekend and as of Monday morning had been viewed more than 1,100,000 times.

Nye - a mechanical engineer and television personality best known for his program, "Bill Nye the Science Guy" - said the United States has great capital in scientific knowledge and "when you have a portion of the population that doesn't believe in it, it holds everyone back."

"Your world becomes fantastically complicated if you don't believe in evolution," Nye said in the Web video.

Creationists are a vast and varied group in the United States.  Most creationists believe in the account of the origins of the world as told in the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

In the creation account, God creates Adam and Eve, the world, and everything in it in six days.

For Christians who read the Genesis account literally, or authoritatively as they would say, the six days in the account are literal 24-hour periods and leave no room for evolution.  Young Earth creationists use this construct and biblical genealogies to determine the age of the Earth, and typically come up with 6,000 to 10,000 years.

Your Take: 5 reactions to Bill Nye's creationism critique

The Gallup Poll has been tracking Americans' views on creation and evolution for the past 30 years.  In June it released its latest findings, which showed 46% of Americans believed in creationism, 32% believed in evolution guided by God, and 15% believed in atheistic evolution.

During the 30 years Gallup has conducted the survey, creationism has remained far and away the most popular answer, with 40% to 47% of Americans surveyed saying they believed that God created humans in their present form at one point within the past 10,000 years.

Survey: Nearly half of Americans subscribe to creationist view of human origins

"The idea of deep time of billions of years explains so much of the world around us. If you try to ignore that, your worldview becomes crazy, untenable, itself inconsistent," Nye said in the video.

"I say to the grownups, if you want to deny evolution and live in your world, that's completely inconsistent with the world we observe, that's fine.  But don't make your kids do it.  Because we need them.  We need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future.  We need engineers that can build stuff and solve problems," he said.

Creationists' beliefs about the origins of the Earth are often a narrow focus, based in large part on religious beliefs, and while they reject evolution as "just one theory," they often embrace other fields of science and technology.

In "The Genesis Flood," the 1961 book that in many ways help launch the Young Earth creationism movement in the United States, the authors write: “Our conclusions must unavoidably be colored by our Biblical presuppositions, and this we plainly acknowledge."  Their goal for the book was to harmonize the scientific evidence with the accounts in Genesis of creation and the flood.

The idea of creationism has been scorned by the mainstream scientific community since shortly after Darwin introduced "The Origin of Species" in 1859.  By 1880, The American Naturalists, a science journal, reported nearly every major university in America was teaching evolution.

"In another couple centuries I'm sure that worldview won't even exist.  There's no evidence for it. So..." Nye ends his video.

Religious people should stop seeing their doctors or taking their medication, since both are related to science, and their is no place for science in there world. They should all relied on faith-based healing instead.

So Bill thinks Creationism is false. Big deal. He isn't alone and it hasn't hurt Christianity a bit. God's word is still living and true.

Bill isn't hurting Christianity, but fundamental Christianity sure is hurting progress in this country. All he's saying is science is about facts, not faith or belief. Keep your faith in church and outside of science, where it doesn't belong.

The problem is that the Bible is not meant to be taken literally, but rather symbolically. But what is really astounding is it seems the human race is "devolving" slowly in a sea of willful ignorance, even with so much technical advancements all around us.

Funny that your opinion of how the bible is "meant to be taken" differs from that of so many others, and that "god" couldn't make it clear which parts are to be taken literally, and which parts, not.

how many "creationists" here have actually read the bible? particularly the old testament? do you still sacrifice animals like you're supposed to? do you believe god told ezekiel to lie on his side for a year and only eat bread cooked over a fire made from human feces? you shouldn't, because according to the bible ezekiel protested and god said he can make the fire out of cow feces instead, so that's what he did.
that doesn't mean NOTHING in the bible is true, my point is just that some things in there are nuts so you need to think for yourself

Hate to break it to those of you who believe in God, but all the really smart people know it and I'm going to say it:

    GOD DOESN"T EXIST

STOP HOLDING MANKIND BACK WITH YOUR STUPID IRRATIONAL BELIEFS

The Bible, a stupid book of unknown origin and certainly little reliability, is not a reputable source of evidence.

Evolution is backed by science which actually deals with the world we live in.

Why do only very few people see how pathetic it is believe in a religion? Religion is just people trying to explain their problems in some ignorant way while at the same time trying to become "part of something bigger:" a connection with some illogically omnipotent being.

    WAKE UP!

Mankind knows way more about our universe now then ever before and it was still a stupid idea to believe in God thousands of years ago when we didn't know as much. I suggest that everyone who believes in God should stop blindly following the beliefs of the uneducated people of the past and really really think about what makes the most sense:

That if it ain't backed by science, it's not true. Evolution is backed by science. Creationism is backed by idiots.

How do all you idiots survive?

Feel better now?.. Not sure how you can make a claim like "there is no God"... you must have information that no other living being has ever had..... pretty ignorant claim..

By the way, Bill Nye has a B.A. in "Mechanical Engineering" and takes an interest in astronomy, aviation, etc.... yep, that's gotta make him an Xpert...LOL.

      Excuse me, Alicia.

I do have access to information. You do too. On the internet or at the freaking library. You may not be smart enough to get the underlying message in every non-fiction book or science article but basically it is screaming a t your face saying GOD DOES NOT EXIST!

      August 27, 2012 at 11:58 pm |
    • Alicia

LOL... screaming at my face...what?, a few books, written by men (yeah, remember, men wrote the bible as well, lol.)...NOTHING, screams at me more than the overwhelming evidence of God's existence and if you cannot perceive it, it's only because you A. Choose not to. ...B. are expecting something complicated, like your textbook mentality teaches you or ..C. You're blind.

Why does God have to be complicated?..... why do you think there has to be a complicated postulate behind him when, he's actually too incredibly simplistic to understand?. You can take the road of what science (mere mankind) has to offer you, I'll take what's very blaring and obvious to me which is Creation.
I will NEVER, EVER be persuaded otherwise.

Creationism negates the laws of physics and chemistry. Therefore God has to perform each and every chemical reaction Himself. God game man free will so he does not know what Man is going to do. So if I start a process that requires a chemical reaction God must come and do it. I force God to do my bidding. I have dominion over God.

Creationism and evolution are not incompatible and I really wish people on both sides of the argument would quit being so dogmatic that thinking is occluded. This would include the remarkably intolerant and boorish statement by the guy in the strange bow-tie (apparently fashion sense was not one of his inherited conditions). Could it be there was a divine creation and that included the ability to adapt/evolve...perhaps making it that much more of an amazing creation...why not? See, not exclusionary.

No evidence of any god changing anything in the Universe since the Big Bang event. So why suppose some thing that hasn't been around for the last 13 Biillion years, ever existed for or before that fleeting moment in the first place?

Even worse, why feel important enough to conject it from our tiny insignificant spec of rock, 13 Billion years later .

  11. Dave

Creationism is true. The creation of the earth as told in the Bible is greatly misunderstood. God did not create the earth in six days; He created the earth in six creative periods. Those six creative periods lasted longer than 24 hours each. The earth wasn't created out of nothing either, God doesn't create stuff out of nothing. He used materials that already existed. Rocks and other stuff may indeed be millions of years old. As for the earth in its current created state, probably not as old.

Nothing changes the reality that this is just your opinion. It exists only in your mind as reality. People who are serious about reality look to verifiable evidence in the physical world. We seek to make the story fit the facts—not make the facts fit the story. .

    • ....'he would think to change times and laws......

Look deep.....very deept.......look at the 10 commandments and you will see why this fight is so intense......The 4th commandment says what?....It's the only commandment that God uses the 'Remember'..........why??????? Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy.......6 days labor but the SEVENTH is the Sabbath.........in honor of God's creative power and as an example, God himself rested after Creation.

Satan's number one attack on humanity is for the Seal of God, the Sabbath relationship of communion and rest between God and man would be marred an snuffed out..........Saturday, the seventh day that our Jewish brothers have kept for thousands of years, is the memorial to creation that we trample on today because of the traditions of man. We are not lead by the word of God, but by the smooth soothing arguments of man.

    • LookAndSEE

In the 10 Commandments, the forth, the one which begins with REMEMBER . It clearly states "For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
We can not play with God's word!

For each unit of time , there is a mathematical or solar reason we keep that unit. IE second, minute, hour, day, month, year.
The reason we keep a 7 day week can only be explained from the Bible.
The Sabbath, given at creation is still the Lord's day today, not Sunday!

i dont see how you cant believe in evolution. all u have to do is look at the medical field to see its proof. u have strains of bacteria that develop resistants to antibiotics. do u believe that every time this happens god comes down form heaven as says let me increase this bacterias resistance so more people will get sick? no these bacteria are evolving before our very eyes. just look at the flu virus. do u know why some people get a flu shot every year, its because the flu virus is constantly changing/evolving.

believing in god is fine, but how many other times has the church been wrong in history. creation is no different from the when the church said the earth is flat and everything revolves around it.

"evolution" only refers to "change in the inherited characteristics of biological populations over successive generations"

Merely making that statement does not distinguish between atheistic vs theistic evolution.

mancy you really are a short sighted individual. Try actually reading the bible with an open mind. Better yet, ask God to open His word to you. By that I mean have your finite little pin head brain (mine is the same in comparison the His, I am not picking on you), ask for help in understanding the infinite mind that spans eternity, created the universe, then earth, placed all physical, chemical, spatial laws into place, to help you understand the reality of creation. More importantly seek the reality of salvation through Him. Otherwise you and Mr. Nye will one day end up on the same hot rock for the balance of eternity. You can spout and splutter all you want, but reality remains reality, truth remains truth. And, what happens if you are wrong?

Well, over the past 50 years or so the anti-Christian group has had their way with America. We have removed prayer from school and God from almost every aspect of life, to the point a man was arrested in Arizona for holding a Bible study group at his home.

As I see it, America is now being much more driven by the Taliban evolutionists and Jihadist Atheists and we are reaping everything that comes from that form of extremism.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
