Your Take: 5 reactions to Bill Nye's creationism critique

By Eric Marrapodi, CNN Belief Blog Co-Editor

(CNN) - Bill Nye does not think that children should be taught to deny evolution, and a YouTube video of him explaining why has gone viral. The CNN Belief Blog's report on the video has generated around 10,000 comments and thousands of Facebook shares since Monday.

There were some broad themes in the comments, reflecting a debate that is largely unique to the United States.

While Christianity is booming in Africa, Asia and Latin America, creationism is not, Penn State University religious studies professor Philip Jenkins writes in his book "The New Faces of Christianity: Believing the Bible in the Global South."

Here are five schools of reaction that have emerged in comments:

1. Those using this controversy to bash religion

Atheists love the Internet, as we've chronicled on the Belief Blog. While they may be a small portion of the population, they seem to make up about half our commenters.  It was their chance to join with Nye and cheer him on:

midwest rail:
"If you're watching 'The Flintstones' as if it were a documentary, you're doing it wrong."

2. Those who say wait a minute, being a creationist isn’t necessarily being anti-evolution

Lots of folks from the theistic evolution camp came out to say that believing God was involved doesn't automatically make you anti-evolution.

SteveHeft:
"As someone who is a born again Christian, (senior) mechanical engineer in the technology industry, and a firsthand witness of the risen Christ, I just want to say that Bill Nye is on the right track. It is understandable that both sides seem to be entrenched in their own position, but did anyone ever think that both are correct, and that the truth lies somewhere in the middle?"

candyapple:
"I believe in God, I believe in creationism and evolution. I think that we all came from one man and one woman (God created), and I think that the human race has evolved from this paring. I am a Christian and I love science, learning about our world, and I appreciate the contribution that science has made. But my soul/spirit also need God's love."

Veronica13:
"FYI, 'Science Guy': One can believe in evolution and creation at the same time. They are not incongruent.

3. Those who say that science is stupid and that young Earth creationism rules

Young Earth creationists, who believe the Earth is about 6,000 years old, appeared to be out in force in the comments.

splovengates:
"As a creationist, why would I want to debate an evolutionist? It (is) all a matter of FAITH. You either believe, and have faith in, what Christians call 'THE WORD OF GOD' or not. No debate. TRUTH IS TRUTH WHETHER YOU BELIEVE IT OR NOT.

The people who perished in the Great Flood, in the Bible, didn't believe it was going to rain until it was too late. Better start knocking on the door of the ark before it closes."

L:
"Creationism isn't even taught in public schools. Evolution is. So if you want your children to have Christian beliefs, then you really need to home-school them or find a good Christian school. Unfortunately not the other way around!

Interesting:
"It seems to me that evolution requires just as much faith as creationism. You're just putting your faith in our human powers of observation and believe that what we have thought up based on those observations is correct. We've got a few hundred years at best, of scientific observation, that has now told us that one giant, explosive, random event started a chain reaction that, over billions of years resulted in humans, and flowers, and viruses, and dinosaurs. The belief that the unfathomable intricacies of every living thing on our Earth formed themselves completely at random seems just as fantastical to me as believing in a creator."

4. Those who say Nye should stick to his area of expertise

This tweet was the most polite remark we could find on this subject. Other comments and tweets, not so much.

Greg:
"Thanks Bill ... but leave the teaching of my children to me. ..."

[tweet https://twitter.com/watsup1101/status/240168918109523968%5D

5. Those who say CNN is cooking up controversy where none exists

Lots of people suggested we were generating a story instead of covering one.

Tony Montana:

"Another example of CNN's mostly one-sided reporting. No wonder Fox is (No.) 1. Hopefully CNN will put on both sides in the future if for no other reason than their ratings. Parts of the Bible are dated and contains metaphors. ***SCIENCE IS SIMPLY AN OBSERVATION OF GOD'S CREATION.*** Humans did not make the solar system, billions of stars in billions of galaxies. 'ET' didn't make the universe either. Even if 'ET' did what made 'ET.' "

For the record, plenty of other news outlets covered this story, pointing out that Nye's video was posted on YouTube just before the Republican National Convention opened.  Turns out that Nye taped the segment awhile back and had no say in when it would be released.

Thanks for chiming in. The comments are open here, and you can always hit us up on Twitter @CNNBelief.

Not all creationist are young earth. Evolution is still a theory with no realiable evidence. Creationism and intellegent design offer althernative ideas. Bill Nye and other evolutionist are stifling debate, censorship and reject critical thinking. Children should be taught to think for themselfs, taught all 3 ideas, and apply critical thinking, without any bias on the teachers part. How can you make an informed decision if you are only given 1 side of the issue?

Uh... "evolution is a theory with no reliable evidence?" OK... ignore the years of study and analysis, the geology of the earth, the museums full of fossils, the zoos full of their living descendants... ignore all that, and then ask: "is there reliable evidence of Creationism?" Only if you "rely" totally on an ancient book, and ignore all the rest.

  2. I'm not a GOPer, nor do I play one on TV

    Story linked on CNN today:

Creationists Boycott Dr. Pepper over "Evolution of Flavor" Facebook Ad

    Story is here:
    http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/09/14/creationists-boycott-dr-pepper-over-evolution-of-flavor-facebook-ad/?hpt=hp_t3

The story quotes an internet poster (we know just how 'serious' they are):
“I ain’t no freaking chimp. No more Dr Pepper for my household. God Bless y’all,”

    Funny stuff!

What is your take? Do you believe in Creationism? Do you beleive in Evolution? Can you mend the two together?

Personally I believe in the 6 day creation, that God created everything in completion.

Probably all the organic beings which have ever lived on this earth have descended from some one primordial form, into which life was first breathed.

So who breathed life into it?

    September 5, 2012 at 12:27 am |
    • Cq

Why do you assume a "who" did the breathing?

I feel like group two entirely missed the point of the video. When scientists talk about "Creationism," they are referring to the Young Earth theory. There are a lot of evolutionists whom are also atheists, but there are also agnostic and even Christians, who believe in "guided evolution"–and it's within the scope of how evolution could work (a deity could, conceivably, help a creature which would not otherwise have survived to pass its traits on).

So, the folks who are yelling at Bill Nye for preaching against creationism should probably stop being insensitive–Nye never once says 'God doesn't exist,' just that (Young Earth) creationism is a hypothesis which contradicts much of modern science.

    September 4, 2012 at 5:27 pm |
    • Cq

There are way too many cases of poor design to seriously consider that the evolutionary process was "guided" by any intelligence but, if it were, that intelligence would have had to have been especially fond of pain and suffering. There is pain and suffering all throughout the natural world. Predator kills prey, often eating them while they are still alive. Predators also fail to kill quite often, resulting in starvation. There is disease, and injury due to poor, or flimsy design. Clearly, if nature was in fact designed by an intelligence it would have had to have been a rather incompetent and sadistic one.

Evolution through unintelligent means like natural selection makes a whole lot more sense, and matches the evidence whereas intelligent design does not, on either count.

    • Primewonk

We have literal mountains of facts and evidence to support evolution. A grand total of 0% (n=0) of these facts support the inclusion of any god or gods.

Adding a god or gods to the mix only adds an additional layer of complexity that is not needed, warranted, or supported.

It's like stating that gravity causes the center of mass of an object to be attracted to the center of mass of another object with a force that is proportional to the masses of the objects and the distance between them – and oh yeah, we all know it's really god pushing down!

Ethel, it is sad that you and those like you would bash others for a belief they hold dear to there hearts. Maybe because your insecurities your are afraid of something. If your God is a "badass jar of salsa," then so be it. Society today is trying so hard to create robots who will follow whatever you say without ever questioning anything. The argument can be made either way. How can all of which is, come to exist. Out of nothing comes nothing. Or how did God come to exist and create all that exist from what. We should be a little more open to both possibilities. The smoking gun has not been found to discredit either believe. So stop with insulting other peoples beliefs, it is as immature as children fighting over candy.

Gotta love you atheists...NO transitional species exist, DNA is mind-boggingly intricate, vestigial organs eliminate evolutionary theory, and still you bring up the Galapagos and other excuses to deny a Creator. Just one thought for you.....The fool says in his heart there is no God....Psalms....Have a nice day

Oh, Vincent – you actually believe that crap? How old are you? How far did you go in grade school? How extensive was your brainwashing as a child? This is like watching a four year old, sticking his fingers in his ears, and screaming that Santa DOES exist.

That is the power of brainwashing a child.

      September 1, 2012 at 7:59 pm |
    • Cq

You're right, NO "transitional" species actually exist, at least in the way that creationists describe. Instead of goats giving birth to half-gaots/half-aardvarks, or something similarly ridiculous, in actual evolution theory every individual would have looked like their parents and offspring, perhaps spanning thousands of generations either way. Change can only be appreciated when you compare an individual with their ancestor removed by an especially long period of time, say millions of years. Those would likely not look like they belong to the same species.

It's analogous to having a photo of yourself from age 100 all the way to birth. All the photos of any given year look pretty much the same, but your photos from 50 years apart don't, and someone who doesn't know you probably wouldn't be able to recognize you from your baby photos. You didn't wake up one morning and "change" from a child into an adult. Evolution is gradual. Stop looking for fossils that are "half" one thing and "half" something else. Satyrs, Centaurs, and Mermaids are the things of imagination.

Yo darwin......see above citation from me......Why do you insult believers? Why the ad hominem attacks? darwin – since we have been able to devine and connect what we first looked like- soup to apes – and what we are now, can you enlighten me what we will look like in another 50,000 years – what exactly are we evolving into now?

Nye doesn't need to be a genius. Evolution is simple, and elegant. Anyone who cannot see that it's the truth has either not seen the mountain of evidence supporting it, or has chosen to somehow ignore it.

      @scott

There's a fair chance we will not have pinky fingers in the future. Evolution is not limited to just humans, anyone who thinks that humans are the end result is a little goofy to me. Its possible that any organ that we don't use could be done away with in the future. The possibilities are endless.

Nye understands evolution to be true. This hardly requires him to be a genius. Evolution is simple to understand, and the evidence for it can be easily grasped by schoolchildren, which is why it is being taught in schools.

this is one argument that drives me crazy!!! you tell me its crazy that im here(and the flowers, and the dinosaurs etc.) when you can see a pattern of how things evolve and reproduce over time. its right in front of you. YOU SAY ITS IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO BE HERE BUT THAT "ONE" CREATOR(who just came into existence on his own with no evolution) WITH MAGICAL POWERS AND IS SUPPOSED TO BE A MILLION TIMES GREATER THAN ME JUST SNAPPED HIS FINGERS AND HERE I AM. how can it be so impossible for me to exist with no creator? who created God? doesnt it make more sense that i could JUST HAPPEN TO BE HERE vs a being that is so much greater than me. well then who created God? he cant just randomly be there?

YOU CONTRADICT YOURSELF AND DESTROY YOUR OWN ARGUMENT!!!!

let me help you with your unbelief my friend.....God has Always existed, not created. Please take your own rational thought and digest this: Darwin himself said 150 years ago that if no transitional species were found, his argument was invalid. NO transitional species have been found to date. And since you are such an open-minded soul, Google the term "vestigial organs:, and see what you find. I could go on and on, but for now that should keep you occupied. For additional amusement, I suggest you read " Darwins's Black Box", by Philip Johnson. I know you will because you are open-minded and would like to know the truth, and not have to bash believers all day,and be angry all the time. Go ahead to Amazon and order the book, and let me know what you think....Have a nice day!

Vincent – cut the crap, please! What is your proof that this God of yours exists. And please – no crap about faith or the bible. I can say MY GOD (who iS a badass jar of salsa) exists. Why should anyone (especially YOU) believe that a god exists?

      September 1, 2012 at 8:06 pm |

Concerning the book Darwin's Black Box, four of the book's five "peer" reviewers (Michael Atchison, Robert Shapiro, K. John Morrow, and Russell Doolittle) have made statements that contradict or otherwise do not support Behe's claim of the book passing a rigorous peer review. In short, this work does not pass as credible science.

Just curious, but how do you know that God has always existed, or even that he exists at all? Because it's written in the Bible? Another book?
