Einstein's Gravity Theory Passes Toughest Test Yet
Apr. 25, 2013 — A strange stellar pair nearly 7,000 light-years from Earth has provided physicists with a unique cosmic laboratory for studying the nature of gravity. The extremely strong gravity of a massive neutron star in orbit with a companion white dwarf star puts competing theories of gravity to a test more stringent than any available before

Ancient Earth Crust Stored in Deep Mantle
Apr. 24, 2013 — Scientists have long believed that lava erupted from certain oceanic volcanoes contains materials from the early Earth's crust. But decisive evidence for this phenomenon has proven elusive. New research from a team including Carnegie's Erik Hauri demonstrates that oceanic volcanic rocks contain samples of recycled crust dating back to the Archean era 2.5 billion years ago. Their work is published in Nature.

Einstein letter, set for auction, shows scientist challenging idea of God, being 'chosen'
By Jessica Ravitz, CNN
Decades before atheist scientist and author Richard Dawkins called God a "delusion," one world-renowned physicist – Albert Einstein – was weighing in on faith matters with his own strong words.
“The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still primitive legends,” Einstein wrote in German in a 1954 letter that will be auctioned on eBay later this month. "No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this.”

Earth From Space
Detailed satellite images reveal the web of connections that sustain life on Earth. Aired February 13, 2013 on PBS
Program Description
"Earth From Space" is a groundbreaking two-hour special that reveals a spectacular new space-based vision of our planet. Produced in extensive consultation with NASA scientists, NOVA takes data from earth-observing satellites and transforms it into dazzling visual sequences, each one exposing the intricate and surprising web of forces that sustains life on earth. Viewers witness how dust blown from the Sahara fertilizes the Amazon; how a vast submarine "waterfall" off Antarctica helps drive ocean currents around the world; and how the sun's heating up of the southern Atlantic gives birth to a colossally powerful hurricane. From the microscopic world of water molecules vaporizing over the ocean to the magnetic field that is bigger than Earth itself, the show reveals the astonishing beauty and complexity of our dynamic planet.

Climate change is a significant and lasting change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns over periods ranging from decades to millions of years. It may be a change in average weather conditions, or in the distribution of weather around the average conditions (i.e., more or fewer extreme weather events). Climate change is caused by factors that include oceanic processes (such as oceanic circulation), biotic processes, variations in solar radiation received by Earth, plate tectonics and volcanic eruptions, and human-induced alterations of the natural world.^

I agree with Bill Nye totally. I had a great science teacher who told me that science deals in observable facts. This is what we must weigh. I am religious but do not need to destroy, ignore, or to push to aside clearly knowable scientific facts.
Bill Nye is also correct that these days every child must know science better than ever before.
After the endless parade of Fundie morons through this column, It's refreshing to see some logic and reason.
Time to wake up an understand that churches have been misleading people for their own gain. Science has helped us to really understand our world and will continue to prove that many faith based ideas of our world are not the truth.
If you don't believe in evolution, don't get a flue shot every year.
This is one of the simpler and more elegant ways to present evolution while avoiding that old and tired trap of monkey>man rage. I am a Christian, and this is exactly what I bring up anytime someone makes a comment about the "Science" conspiracy.
me too. i'm a christian and i believe that a guy rose from the dead with all his decaying body and his wounds healed, except for the holes in his hands from crucifixion. that wasn't healed because he god wanted to show us he was the same person. nobody could tell because his face totally changed. but he had holes in his hands so that means he came back from the dead. nobody would put holes in their hands deliberately to pretend they were jesus. that's just insane. that's why i believe in the lord. but i believe in evolution too, because who wouldn't believe that?
Hmm, what if a supreme being designed evolution?
Why do they have to be mutually exclusive?
What if "the laws" of science and physics are quite different outside our tiny part of the world? This would include the concept of time.
Scientists in 1300 are the ones who thought the world was flat. Keep that in mind. There is always more to learn.
Brun-boy, the bible in one section says the earth is flat, and in the other, that it is round. So, the bible contradicts itself. You can toss out the bible as not even agreeing with itself, without even comparing it with science.
So, Brun-boy, how do you like them apples? Now go get your annual flu shot, thereby acknowledging that either you think that the bible babble about disease is wrong, or that you don't really believe the bible. Take yer pick, Brun-boy.
dont even bother with people like socrates, they are not creative in their thinking and life style. (creative meaning the ability to adapt/evolve/change etc...) It is important to have some type of faith, even if that is atheism!, but its also important to keep faith and religion out of science and our education.
Teaching atheism is like teaching that the Earth doesn't exist and teaching evolution is like teaching people that Transformers is a true story.
Delusional idiocy.
I'm always amazed at the pride believers take in their own ignorance.
you don't "teach" atheism. It is a choice people make when they decide religion is not for them, or they don't believe the evidence proves religion.
Your statement is silly. You basically said "since you don't believe what I do, which is based on FAITH and not empirical evidence, all other observations and science are false."
Wow- your genius is astounding.
The US education system has a lot to answer for. People like this are holding back the human race.
How such ignorance can exsist in the 21st century is amazing.
i bet this fell upon deaf ears. people when are you going to grow up!
to all who dispute creationism I guess you don't believe there are actual birds that speak English ??? funny how there are parrots at every zoo but you find it hard to believe that throughout history at lease one other animal / species could talk.. hmm
The birds at the zoo do not speak. They have no understanding of language. They mimic sounds. This is SCIENCE. This comment is one more reason why education is lacking in this country. Nye is correct: Tax dollars should NOT be used to teach people what is clearly a belief that is not based on any fact – it is based on faith. Big difference. Think about it – your granite counter top would not exist in a creationism world. Too old. Those mountains are not a couple of hundred or even a couple of thousand years old. How does all of this get explained to school kids? Made by Satan? Mountains and the Earth is a lie? C'mon. There gets to be a point where you cannot deny the obvious. However, if that is what you want to think – that is your choice. Bottom line: keep your beliefs to yourself and your church, Leave it out of the schools. Simple.
If tax dollars couldn't be used to teach anything that isn't based on any facts, you couldn't even teach that the Earth goes around the Sun. It's not as simple as you think it is. Science is based on faith, as anything else.
@Socrates:
"Science is based on faith, as anything else." Well sure there are always theories in the present. But people in science have the sense and methods to stay sensible about leaving behind things that are later proven false (or for which better theories come along). Religion can't say the same. It just stays unfounded and just becomes more so as time goes by.
Well... on your defense of science you made three assumptions on faith and you probably didn't even noticed. Funny.
Bill Nye is a kiddy science-show host. He's about the level of a grade school teacher. So it makes sense that the evolution crowd would consider him their champion because he' at about their level. But Bill Nye couldn't stand on the same stage and debate with someone like Norman Geisler, Henry Morris or John Whitcomb. Though those men are gracious, Nye's gross ignorance and stupidity would be exposed and he would be thoroughly humiliated.
You do realize this guy is an Ivy-league educated engineer right?
I can debate evolution, just look at viruses and the growing resistance to anti-biotics. Look what happens to a domesticated pig, where within two generations in the wilderness, it grows tusks. We see evolution in our life times.
Creationism is applying faith to science, there is no proof of it. You cannot prove creationism, it is blending science (facts and methods) with faith (believing in something for which you don't have tangible proof nor an ability to prove merit). These are completely different concepts and combining them seeks to simply science with religion.
Quoting scripture doesn't prove anymore than quoting a Greek myth, these are books and tales written thousands of years ago, where plenty of their corresponding stories have been dis proven, and no tangible proof, what we would consider modern-day scientific proof still exists. We are going off stories passed down over the years and none that were written by those who knew the individuals being praised, but rather disciples, in the proceeding centuries.
And you say you can debate evolution?
Poor kids...
Bill Nye is not a grade school teacher. Do some research before you speak about things in a public level. Science is not based on faith, science is based on repeated test and observations called the scientific method. Cry and rabble all you want but don't lie.
Bill Nye could better spend his time debating the existence of the tooth fairy with a group of children than waste his time debating with lunatics such as Norman Geisler, Henry Morris or John Whitcomb.
Actually it was the great scientific minds which taught the earth was flat and that the sun orbitted it. Scientists need to stick to robots and medicine and leave the rest to God.
As a matter of fact, there is no scientific proof to either geocentrism or heliocentrism, and the idea that the early church or even the middle ages taught the Earth was flat is a myth that arised in the 19th century.
you are such an idiot.
Earth was flat ... as a myth .. true.. even the ancient Greeks and Egyptians KNEW the nworld was round. They just has no idea how big around it was. As far as heliocentric, I think you'd better look at astronomy. It's been proven beyond all doubt that we are in a heliocentric system. Even the church, who opposed and jailed those who said so, accepted the FACT that the planets all orbit the sun, and now teach this in private religious schools. I know this because I was sentenced to attend one for 10 years as a youngster.
Two wrongs, Mirosal. Eratosthenes calculated the Earth's diameter with remarkable accuracy 23 centuries ago, and no, there's no scientific proof of heliocentrism. Seriously, to not know that and throw away advice to study astronomy is proof you haven't done any yourself.
Fact, many clerics and sunday school teachers teach heliocentrism, but despite what you think, they don't do that with official approval.
John, presenting that as a counter example is proof you need to get yourself up to date on that.
John, to present that as a counter example is proof you need to get yourself up to date on that issue and learn what the Galileo case really was about.
John, actually, to present that as a counter example is proof you need to get yourself up to date on that issue, with some real books on the subject.
Say it 4 times and your still wrong...
Nice one!
When at first you epic fail, keep failing, never admit your wrong!
If you aren't smart enough to realize by yourself what happened, it probably ain't worth to waste time explaining it.
Teach Christianity in church and home. Teach Science in the classroom. Keep religion out of the curriculum. The church has always been resistant to science and have often done everything possible to hide scientific evidence. Some of us actually believe fossils show man came from apes and do not believe in talking snakes and Noah's ark.
As a matter of fact, the catholic church was the major keeper and developer of scientific knowledge for centuries, and as far as I know, never did anything to hide scientific evidence. Without the church, science as is known today simply wouldn't exist, simple as that.
What the church is resistant to is the current appeal to pose scientific theories as definite answers to metaphysical questions.
@Socrates – you might want to brush up on your history by reviewing the experience Galileo had with the church.
@Socrates,
The Islamic religion keep the Ancient Greek's knowledge alive while Christianity fought among itself over Europe. Should we all convert to Islam because of it? Or should we recognize that science is independent of religion?
ME II, you can't recognize it for something it's not.
ME II, by the way, I don't know what you're talking about, man. I'm not saying anyone should convert to catholicism, I'm just saying the church is not an enemy of science as omeany tried to put.
Socrates... you mean that only the church gets to pose whacked out unproveable nonsense (can't even call them theories) as definite answers to metaphysical questions.,,, I see.
Oh and the church gets to decide what is metaphysical? The origin of life is physical, not metaphysical. We are made of carbon. Wether we have a soul is metaphyscial. The church can have that one. Creationism is the chuch butting in on SCIENCE, not the other way round.
CTEd, you don't even know what metaphysics is and you want to have a word on what the church can and cannot do? Please, go study, come back in a few years.
omeany- which fossils would that be? Sincere question, Could you enlighten me?
Socrates, you are wrong. You are confusing the Catholic Church with the Medici.
No, I'm not.
