5 ways faith will matter at the Democratic National ConventionBy Dan Gilgoff and Eric Marrapodi, CNN Belief Blog Co-Editors Charlotte, North Carolina (CNN) - You can't have a political convention in the Bible Belt, in Billy Graham's home state, and not expect religion to play a role. Here are our predictions for how faith (and faithlessness) will intersect with this week's Democratic National Convention. What are we missing? Let us know in comments and on Twitter and we'll amend our list. 1. One big frame for the convention – the purported “war on women” – grows out of a fight between the White House and the Catholic Church. From first lady Michelle Obama to Sandra Fluke, the Georgetown Law student whom Rush Limbaugh branded a “slut” for advocating free contraception coverage, lots of convention speakers are women who will likely talk up Democratic support for women’s health and abortion rights. They want to strengthen President Barack Obama’s advantage among female voters. America’s Catholic bishops may have handed the Democrats a gift by blasting the White House mandate on contraception coverage, which provoked the “war on women” drumbeat. CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories 2. Atheists want Democrats to show them a little love. Ever since George W. Bush’s re-election in 2004, the Democrats have worked to remake the party’s secular image, elevating progressive religious voices and talking about issues as “values.” At the same time, America’s atheists – who skew mostly Democratic – have grown more outspoken about wanting the government to represent their values. An atheist group removed billboards in Charlotte that attacked the presidential candidates’ religion, but look for proudly secular Dems to push back against the party’s piety this week. 3. Will Democrats talk about religious liberty? The right has hit back on the Democrats “war on women” attacks by charging that the Dems are waging a war on religion. It’s a talking point for Mitt Romney, who recently released an ad on the subject. The major grievance: Obama’s so-called contraception mandate, requiring health insurance companies to provide free contraception coverage to nearly all employees, even if they work for a Catholic hospital or college. The Democrats’ platform language on same-sex marriage suggests they want to be sensitive to religious liberty concerns, pledging support for the “freedom of churches and religious entities to decide how to administer marriage as a religious sacrament without government interference.” Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter 4. Democrats are working overtime for Catholic votes. Exhibit A: The convention will close with a prayer from Archbishop Timothy Dolan, America’s highest profile Catholic cleric, who also closed out the Republican National Convention a few days ago. Exhibit B: Sister Simone Campbell, a high visibility progressive nun – who led a “nuns on the bus" tour this summer blasting vice-presidential nominee Paul Ryan’s budget - speaks Wednesday, telling us she’ll deliver a “sermon.” The Democrats are giving the conservative and progressive wings of the church a platform in Charlotte, hoping to send a message to Catholic voters in swing states like Ohio and Colorado. 5. Could this Democratic convention be a lot less faithy than the last one? Happening in the shadow of the “values voter” election of 2004, the 2008 Democratic convention was something of a faith fest, especially when it came to evangelicals. Convention roles went to the Rev. Joel Hunter, a megapastor from Florida, and best-selling Christian author Don Miller. This year, some religious activists are quietly wondering if the convention will come off as more secular. Hunter, who remains close to Obama, is skipping Charlotte. "There’s no reason for me to be there,” he told us. “My relationship with the president is pastoral and not political."

There are plenty of Americans who do know inisde and not buried deep, I think, and hold Bush in contempt for it, but they are getting drowned out in the tide of sentimentalism and the consecration of anything September 11-related as sacred and untouchable. The lovely thing about Krugman is that he did something so rare: he went against the terrible phoniness of TV and other popular media. Against the whole tide. A moment of non-phoniness escaped into the MSM. And Krugman will be correspondingly vilified, and treated like a hostile space alien. I think something similar happened to you because you violated the sacrosanct Israeli code that all terrorism is not only evil (it is evil) but that its cause is absolutely only that they hate us just because we are Jews and for no other reason on earth. As Strenger in Haaretz reminds us this week, it takes intelligence to confront the sickness of terrorism. Long before Bush Jr. became POTUS I was saying that, no matter what you think of his politics, he is simply not intelligent enough to be POTUS. Period. Anyone who disagrees with that now has woeful standards for who gets to be POTUS. But in a nation that could even think for two seconds about electing Sarah Palin to lead the free world without bursting into collective laughter, maybe the criterion for POTUS that he/she is the one I'd like to sit down and drink a beer with matters more (although I could never get why you'd want to drink a beer with either Bush Jr. (aka Shrub ) or Palin). There are no serious Christians. Yep...voted 3rd party the last 4 presidential elections. Neither the Dems nor the Reps are desirable leaders for our nation based on their behaviors. Both parties drive spending, both parties pander to special interests instead of executing their jobs to the Consti tution, and both parties repeatedly show a lack of needed critical thinking and decision-making skills. And including religion as part of their platform is a major no-no. While far from perfect, I see Ron Paul as a decent example of how to balance religion and politics. While certainly religious, he has repeatedly and clearly stated his support for separation of church and state, and his voting record is that of a fairly strict Consti'tutionalist. THAT is being a leader, in my mind....not being completely two-faced like the Dems this week, or completely wrapped in religion like the Repubs. Give everyone their freedom of faith, but keep it clearly out of politics and governance.
The way the Republican Party has consistently treated Ron Paul and his supporters is testament to their complete failure.

Having God in the platform doesn't mean the party is more Godly. There are people who portray Christian principles that don't attend church or shout about their faith, just as their are people who speak of God or faith, go to church yet their actions don't align with the talk.
The Democrats are no more Godless than the Republicans are the party of God. It's offensive that the Bible and God are used as political props. I believe in God but when a politician uses the phrase God told me to run or someone one says the candidate is ordained by God, I cringe. Faith crosses party lines. Those who profess their faith the loudest are not always those who walk in faith.

P.S.: This is why I have come to think that, no matter the praaticcl costs of having a volunteer, non-professional Army, for a democracy to do war right, the leaders of that democracy have to have their own sons and daughter equally at risk in the fight. There has to be a true people's army, in which deferments and exemptions are truly rare and justified, and there are no status/educational/class/etc. deferments. The democracy has to work really hard at approaching as closely as humanly possible this ideal, and work really hard at stigmatizing anyone's attempts to weasel out of it. There can be no just war in a democracy without this. The Iraq war teaches this lesson.
It's good to have you back, Larry. Although today's date will forever be lieknd with the twin towers tragedy, it's reassuring to know that people do possess the resilience and determination to deal with so many of the negative aspects that this world has in store. Let us all hope to make it a different and a better world from what it was.And from what it still could be. .

Krugman's clarification is eeilry similar to your story, Larry. He writes that he should have added that the American people behaved well after 9/11 in that they didn't panic, and didn't lynch Moslems and dissenters.
