Dems: God never left our party

By Steve Kastenbaum, CNN

Charlotte, North Carolina (CNN)–Heads are bowed in prayer inside room 211 at the Charlotte Convention Center.

Last night, Democrats put the word 'god' back into their party platform following some strong criticism. For the folks at this daily prayer session though, god and the party never parted ways.

Delegates here are fine tuning the message that you can have deep religious convictions and still vote for a Democrat. It's a puzzle the party has been trying to crack for years.

“The notion that one party holds a cornerstone on Christianity, that’s breaking and that’s what one of our goals is – to break that stereotype because the reason that we’re Democrats is because we are Christians,” says Christina Forrester, founder and president of the group Christian Democrats of America.

It’s up to Reverend Derrick Harkins to make sure that people of faith see their values reflected in the party’s platform. He’s the National Director of Faith Outreach for the DNC.

“I really believe that people are excited because we’re talking about the ideas that really resonate with people across the spectrum in terms of faith," Harkins said.

I find it funny: " because the reason that we’re Democrats is because we are Christians".

The reason I am an independent is because I am an atheist. Free thinkers should not be bound to one party or another, especially because they do pander to religious interests in the name of votes.

And please let me know where in the Bible it says that God is "in" a political party. Just because it makes you happy to say it, doesn't make it so.

Without JESUS CHRIST the battles already lost, the real JESUS CHRIST! Its not ur religion that matters but ur relationship between God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit which are one!

Does it bother you that someone can be an atheist AND be more moral than you?

And does it bother you that someone can be a Christian and pro-choice?

Every four years, GOd comes to the DNC and RNC conventions to listen to hogwashes and watch the men having a good time later in strip clubs 🙂

    • rh

If you've ever been to Grand Rapids, Michigan, you'll notice that there are strip joints and churches alternating each corner.

The most moral people I know are atheists, because they don't believe in a god that will "forgive them" if they kill someone, or "forgive them" if they molest a child. They know those acts are wrong and don't do them because THEY ARE WRONG, not because there is retribution waiting for them.

It's not about puting the word God back. It's about doing what God asks us to do. Abortion and gay marriage are things God has not told us to do.

      Can prayer change a diaper?

Can prayer change an oil filter?

Because if not, please let me know what things it can change.

I do agree that prayer helps people who believe in a god that accepts prayers, but you cannot argue that you praying is any different than me wishing people well, and keeping them in my thoughts.

I'm sorry "Atheism is not healthy for children and other living things", but you assertions regarding atheism and prayer are unfounded. I see that you repeat these unfounded statements with high frequency. Perhaps the following book might help you overcome this problem:

Interesting the article states "god" instead of God with capital G. The democrat party does have their "god." It is called the god of self because the democrat party platform cannot be reconciled with the Bible.

    September 6, 2012 at 10:48 pm |
    • Good

Most of the Bible and God's behavior cannot be reconciled to human decency, so it is best if political platforms do not conform themselves to nightmares like Deutronomy.

      September 6, 2012 at 11:22 pm |
    • KRHODES

What is "human decency?" If God does not exist there is no such thing as decency, good, bad, or evil.

  18. Prayer is not healthy for children and other living things

Prayer takes people away from actually working on real solutions to their problems.
Prayer has been shown to have no discernible effect towards what was prayed for.
Prayer makes you frothy like Rick Santorum. Just go to http://santorum.com to find out more.
Prayer prevents you from getting badly needed exercise.
Prayer makes you fat, pale, weak, and sedentary.
Prayer wears out your clothes prematurely.
Prayer contributes to global warming through excess CO2 emissions.
Prayer fucks up your knees and your neck and your back.
Prayer can cause heart attacks, especially among the elderly.
Prayer reveals how stupid you are to the world.
Prayer exposes your backside to pervert priests.
Prayer makes you think doilies are exciting.
Prayer makes you secretively flatulent and embarrassed about it.
Prayer makes your kids avoid spending time with you.
    Prayer gives you knobbly knees.
Prayer makes you frothy like Rick Santorum. Just google him to find out.
    Prayer dulls your senses.
Prayer makes you post really stupid shit.
    Prayer makes you hoard cats.
Prayer makes you smell like shitty kitty litter and leads you on to harder drugs.
    Prayer wastes time.

My Soul thirsts for my God for I have seen his wondrous deeds. The Stars and their family sings of Gods Praise without seizing, but God does not take delight in them. But when man proclaims Gods glory, he takes delight in them for man does through free will. Some say God is irrelevant in this modern age, some say that God is an alien from other star, but God look upon him who in all his humbleness says " Lord to whom shall I go for you alone have the words of eternal life". A beautiful prayer for the one who said "Prayer is not healthy for Children,,,,
" Lord, make me an instrument of thy Peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow Love.
Where there is injury, thy Pardon, Lord.
Where there is doubt, let there be Faith.

Oh Lord, make me an instrument of thy Peace.
Where there is despair, let me bring Hope.
Where there is darkness, let there be Light.
Where there is sadness, let there be Joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek:
To be consoled, as to console,
To be understood, as to understand,
To be loved, as to love.

Lord, make me an instrument of thy Peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow Love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned.

And it's in dying that we are born
      To eternal life.

  20. There IS WIDESPREAD VOTER FRAUD!!

Don't let the Democrats fool you when they say there is no voter fraud. There is and it's widespread.

It's called the new voter ID laws and the changes in early voting and voter roll purges put forth by the Republicans.

Don't be made a fool by the Republicans, do everything you can to get out to vote.
